Q Whatever happened to Chunk from The Goonies? —Emmy Atwell, Prescott Valley, Ariz.

Chunk was played by Jeff Cohen, now a Beverly Hills entertainment lawyer. Over the years, he’s been asked by fans to re-create the “truffle shuffle,” a scene from the movie where Chunk lifts his shirt and jiggles his belly. “I look

different now, fortunately,” says Cohen, 36. “But when I was a kid, I was asked to do that many times.” The Goonies 25th Anniversary Collector’s Edition will be released Nov. 2 on Blu-ray and DVD.

Q I vaguely recall that musician Glenn Miller was an Army Air Force captain, and that he and his band’s vocalist, Johnny Desmond, a sergeant, never returned or were never found after their last mission. Is that true?—Georgene Suchomel, Necedah, Wis.

Bandleader Miller died Dec. 15, 1944, at age 40 when his small plane reportedly crashed in the English Channel. No wreckage or

remains were found. At his daughter’s request, his tombstone was placed in Arlington National Cemetery in 1992. Desmond, who sang in Miller’s Army Air Force Orchestra, survived the

war and continued his musical career. He died in 1985 at 65. Among the Glenn Miller Orchestra’s most famous hits were “In

the Mood,” “Moonlight Serenade” and “Chattanooga Choo Choo.”

Q I remember the 1970s group America and their songs “I Need You” and “A Horse With No Name.” Are the band members still performing?—Bob Christy Jr., Piqua, Ohio

Gerry Beckley, 58, and Dewey Bunnell, 58, two of the three founding members of America, are touring this year in celebration of the group’s 40th anniversary. These high school buddies, who met in England in the mid-1960s, now play before second- and third-generation fans around the world. “I think that the ingredients of the America sound are the basic fundamentals that translate internationally,” Beckley says. “A lot of times in these countries, we see people singing along and they don’t really know what the words mean. Music is truly the international language.”

Q Did Natalie Martinez from ABC’s Detroit 1-8-7 ever model for Jennifer Lopez’s clothing line?—Julie Ponce, Tallahassee, Fla.

Yes, the Cuban-American actress, 26, was a spokesmodel for JLO by Jennifer Lopez (and also starred in MyNetwork TV’s Fashion House) before joining

the cast of Detroit 1-8-7 as Detective Ariana Sanchez.

“My mother made me go out on the audition to be a spokesmodel for JLO, and I ended up winning the competition,” she

says. “After that, I moved on

and started an acting career.”

WALKING HEAD-DOWN along Osage Creek in Green Forest, Ark. (pop. 2,717), Lin Wellford, 59, scans the stream bank before picking up a smooth round rock the size of a curled-up calico kitten.

“It’s like Mother Nature says this is the perfect piece for a cat,” says Wellford, holding up the sandstone canvas for her next art design. “Finding the right rock is like a treasure hunt.”

Later at her kitchen table, she transforms the river-tumbled rock into an animal so life-like that a casual observer might be tempted to scratch the faux feline behind its ears. Using a lead pencil, Wellford sketches the animal’s head, haunch and tail, then outlines the features with a black marker and fills in the spaces with acrylic paints. With fine-tipped brushes, she adds eyes and fluffy fur and layers in highlights and shadows.

Wellford calls her creations three-dimensional art and—as an artist, author and teacher—almost single-handedly has elevated rock painting from a quirky hobby to a respected art form during the last three decades.

At first, however, people thought she had rocks in her head when she began to collect them and consider the creative possibilities. With an advertising degree from the University of Florida, Wellford had moved with her family from Miami to northwest Arkansas in 1978 and bought 100 acres of forested woodlands to build their home.

“Just like tourists are fascinated by seashells in Florida, I was captivated by rocks in the Ozarks,” says Wellford, who explored the creek just a stone’s throw from her house.

One day, she came upon a rock shaped like a bunny and told herself, “By adding eyes and ears, I can make this rock a rabbit.” Painting that first piece led to the launch of Stone Menagerie, a home-based business to sell her creations by the pound to shops in Arkansas, Missouri and Florida.

Today, she works on commission and, besides painting bunnies and cats, Wellford has created her “pet rocks with personality” to look like fawns, foxes, cheetahs, leopards, mice, owls, pandas, raccoons, squirrels, snakes, turtles and walruses. Others look like miniature barns,

flowers, fruit and houses. They can be used as doorstops and bookends or as decorations for flower beds, gardens, mantels and more.

As a rock artist, Wellford breaks down the process into steps, which she outlines in her books and teaches in her classes at libraries and community and nature centers. Since 1994 with the release of The Art of Painting Animals on Rocks, she has written nine instructional books that have sold nearly a million copies. Her ideas literally have rocked the world of hobby, craft and decorative painting circles.

“It opened up a whole new world for them,” says Wellford, citing readers who say the hobby has given them added income, self-esteem and a way to relieve stress.

Rock painting, she says, is particularly appealing to people timid about picking up a paintbrush for the first time or concerned about the cost of art supplies. “Rather than teach people to just turn a rock into art, I could transform people into artists,” Wellford muses.

Among her former students is Wandra Dees, 60, of Golden, Mo.,

who hosts annual rock painting parties in her home and gives many of her painted creations as gifts. “I never considered myself an artist before I started painting rocks 15 years ago,” Dees says.

“Lin is so willing to show the technique,” says Linda Chorice, manager of the Springfield (Mo.) Conservation Nature Center, where Wellford has taught classes for six years. “By the time everybody has created something, they feel like they want to try it again.”

Wellford is a rock star in her field, says Bill Ewart Jr., 50, of Edgartown, Mass. With Wellford’s guidance, he has learned to paint lighthouses, ships and seashells on white quartz, and he now teaches others the art form.

“I loved each new book Lin came out with and realized that I could use stones or rocks as a blank canvas and paint virtually anything I could imagine,” Ewart says. “I only hope I have been able to inspire someone the way she has inspired me.” ★

“HEAR THAT?” exclaims a wide-eyed Lucas Miller, 8, waiting expectantly at dusk for signs of bats taking flight near the Congress Avenue Bridge in Austin, Texas.

His big brother gives an upside-down nod. “Yep, they’re talking to us,” says Benjamin, 11.

With the largest urban bat colony in North America chattering behind them, the boys hang batlike from an oak tree on a nearby grassy spot. Thousands of lively squeaks drift from beneath the bridge, while hundreds of people await the emergence of more than a million Mexican free-tailed bats.

“The bats make me feel kinda creeped out,” says Benjamin, who lives in Austin. “But I like feeling that way, so this is great.”

Going batty in TexasLike Benjamin and Lucas, about 100,000 spectators visit the

downtown bridge each year to witness a swarm of bats skim across Lady Bird Lake in search of insects for their supper. And though each bat can fit into the palm of your hand and weighs only as much as two 25-cent coins, they consume an average of 20,000 pounds of bugs every night, according to Susan Kwasniak, 45, spokeswoman for Austin-based Bat Conservation International.

The natural spectacle begins each spring when mostly female bats arrive from Mexico to roost and give birth in early June, and ends in early November when most of the bats return to Mexico for the winter. The flights peak in August when baby bats, called pups, join

their parents in nighttime forages for food.Bats have lived beneath the Congress Avenue

Bridge for years, but the colony’s population skyrocketed during the 1980s after a bridge reconstruction project left behind crevices in the concrete joints that created ideal roosting spots. While the burgeoning bat population initially concerned Austin residents, the city came to embrace the misunderstood mammals, which actually are quite gentle-natured—as long as people do not handle them.

Today, the bat flight inspires a festive atmosphere at the bridge each evening from spring through fall, drawing tourists, downtown workers, and families who bring lawn chairs and blankets to picnic on a nearby lawn. Some bat watchers gather along the rail atop the bridge, silhouetted against the setting sun. Others bob in boats and kayaks on the lake below, under the concrete arches. They wait . . . and wait.

“When are they coming?” ask Finn and Beck Medford, ages 11 and 6, respectively, during an evening outing at the bridge with their parents. “That’s the thing about nature,” answers mom Jenny Medford, 41, of Austin. “You can’t plan it. Sometimes that’s what makes it more special.”

Within minutes, a stream of tiny dark shapes emerges from below the bridge, swooping dramatically over the lake—a departure that can take two hours on some evenings.

The phenomenon makes Austin’s bat flight one of the most unusual and accessible wildlife-related attractions in the nation.

But numerous other habitats feature other so-called creepy wildlife—from wolves and spiders to toads and snakes. The National Wildlife Federation, America’s largest conservation organization, promotes such nature-tourism destinations as a platform to dispel myths that haunt many creatures.

“Despite their strangeness, these animals are very beneficial and really not so scary at all if we just take the time to get to know them better,” says Carey Stanton, the federation’s senior director of education.

Howling in North CarolinaHowling is a hoot at Alligator River National

Wildlife Refuge near Manteo, N.C. (pop. 1,052), especially when one of the dozens of red wolves that live in the wetland preserve howls back.

The 152,000-acre sanctuary has been home to a small but growing population of red wolves since 1987, when the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service released four pairs of the endangered species there after breeding them in captivity. The effort marked the first successful reintroduction of red wolves since the species, which once roamed across the southeastern United States, became endangered in 1973 due to predator control programs and loss of habitat.

Today, more than 130 red wolves in 29 packs inhabit parts of northeastern North Carolina as the world’s only wild population of red wolves, according to the Red Wolf

Coalition, a conservation and educational organization based in Columbia, N.C.

Red wolves, which live for about seven years in the wild, are named for the cinnamon-color fur behind their ears and along their neck and legs. Averaging 4 feet long, including their bushy tail, and weighing about 60 pounds, the wild canines are smaller than gray wolves but larger than coyotes. And, as fierce as the sharp-toothed carnivores may seem, they prey on rodents and other small mammals—not people.

Adventurers can hear the wolves’ harmonious howls during guided “howling safari” tours. Setting out on foot with flashlights in hand, explorers get a brief education on red wolves and the fine art of howling from Kim Wheeler, 49, the coalition’s executive director, who offers her own wolflike bay to get the animals started.

“Howling is a form of communication, and the truth is that I’m not really communicating anything in particular to them,” Wheeler says. “But when they howl back, they are communicating to me to let me know I’m in their territory, whatever I am.”

Creeping in CaliforniaGold fever lured fortune hunters to Coarsegold,

Calif., during the 19th century, but thanks to a town that honors its crawling residents, tarantulas are an even bigger attraction today.

Each year on the Saturday before Halloween,

the Sierra Foothills community hosts the Coarsegold Tarantula Awareness Festival to celebrate the spider’s October to November mating season, which peaks on Halloween. During this time, hundreds of normally nocturnal males become daytime nomads, facing the dangers of automobile traffic, dogs, brooms and other hazards, while the females wait in their burrows for their hairy princes to arrive.

While it’s not against the law to kill the black and brown, doughnut-size spiders, local residents frown on the practice that led Diane Boland, 61, to start the festival in 1997 to atone for crushing one with her car. Rather than focusing on the spiders’ stinging bite, townsfolk prefer to pay tribute to their eight-legged friends for gobbling up cockroaches and other disease-carrying insects.

Tarantulas don’t spin webs, relying instead on ground vibrations to find food. What

happens next is the stuff of horror movies. “Tarantulas don’t have chewing mouthparts, so what they do is inject the venom with their fangs and then take up the prey’s juices once the venom has turned its internal organs to liquid,” explains Walt Bentley, 63, an entomologist at the University of California’s Kearney Agricultural Center.

Nothing gets that gruesome, however, at the festival, which features a hairy-legs contest, tarantula races and an arachnid petting zoo. “It’s a chance to have a lot of wild, wacky fun while at the same time celebrating how important the tarantulas are for the environment,” Boland says.g , y

WHEN IT COMES to your home, your entryway is your chance to make a good first impression. Here are a few tips from interior design experts on how to best welcome your guests.

“First of all, clear the cobwebs from around the front door, and if your door mat is worn, replace it,” says professional home stager Jamie DeBartolomeis, of Centennial, Colo. “Homeowners often enter their home through the garage, and don’t see what guests see.”

The front door makes a statement about your home, and doors without sidelights or windows aren’t inviting, DeBartolomeis says. “They can feel like a barrier between you and your guests,“ she adds. “If you can’t change the door, add welcoming accessories such as flowers or a bench. And seasonal touches, such as pumpkins and mums for the fall, add interest to the front of your home.”

Once guests step inside, they should be greeted, underfoot, by an area rug, says Kate Byer, a designer in Portland, Ore. “This defines the space and helps keep dirt from traveling into the home,” she says.

Byer also recommends adding a mirror and a bench or chair in the foyer or near the door. “The mirror is decorative and functional, giving you and your guest an opportunity for a quick check. And I like to offer a clear indication of where to set a purse, bag or coat. A bench or single chair accommodates this need.”

Design aside, Byer says displaying good old-fashioned manners is the best way to make guests feel at home. “Be sure to take a moment to welcome them,” she says. “Hospitality is never out of style.” ★

I know why millions of Amer-icans are saving on their heatingbills with the EdenPURE® InfraredPortable Heater.

And now you can save up to$102 on the new 2011 Eden-PURE® GEN4, the finest portableheater in the world.

The new GEN4 was designedand engineered in the USA andhas several patented technologicalbreakthroughs to save you moneyon your heating bill.

U.S. engineers combined spe-cially designed Sylvania InfraredBulbs with the existing Eden-PURE® copper heating chambersfor more efficient heating. Theyeven redesigned the air flow, re-sulting in amplified heating per-formance. The designers at Eden-PURE® call this their “Eden-FLOW™ Direct Air” technology.

For over 30 years as yourhome improvement televisionhost, I have reviewed and experi-enced thousands of products. Ihave an EdenPURE® in my Mass-achusetts home and found it to bea very safe and reliable source ofportable heat. This is one of thosefew comfort investments I can rec-ommend for your home that willtruly pay dividends.

We all know heating costs areexpected to remain at record lev-els. The cost of heating our homeswill continue to be a significantburden on the family budget. TheEdenPURE® GEN4 can cut yourheating bills, pay for itself in amatter of weeks, and then startputting a great deal of extra mon-ey in your pocket after that.

With over one million satis-fied customers around the world, the new EdenPURE® heats better, faster, saves more on heating bills, and runs almost silent.

A major cause of residentialfires in the United States is porta-ble heaters. The choice of fireand safety professionals every-where, the EdenPURE® has noexposed heating elements thatcan cause a fire.

The outside of the EdenPURE®

only gets warm to the touch so thatit will not burn children or pets. And your pet may be just like mydog who has reserved a favoritespot near the EdenPURE®.

The EdenPURE® can alsohelp you feel better. Unlike Eden-PURE® imitators, it will not re-duce humidity or oxygen in theroom. These imitators use ceramic

plates instead of our patented cop-per. The EdenPURE® GEN4 hasover 1 pound of copper! Cheapceramic plates reduce humidity, dry out your sinuses and makeyour skin dry. With other heatingsources, you'll notice that you getsleepy when the heat comes on be-cause they are burning up oxygen.

The advanced space-ageEdenPURE® GEN4 also heats theroom evenly, wall to wall andfloor to ceiling. Other heatingsources heat rooms unevenly withmost of the heat concentrated highand to the center of the room. Andas you know, portable heaters onlyheat an area a few feet around theheater. With the EdenPURE®, thetemperature will not vary in anypart of the room.

Photos using infrared lightingdemonstrated that the heat was al-most perfectly even from floor toceiling and wall to wall. TheEdenPURE® advanced infrared ef-ficiency is based on the distribu-tion of energized air, not on justfan movement. This heat is called"soft heat" due to how comfort-able it is.

How can a person cut theirheating bill with the EdenPURE®?First, the EdenPURE® uses lessenergy to create heat than manyother sources, but that is just partof why it will cut a person’s heat-

ing bill. The EdenPURE® willheat a room in minutes. You willimmediately notice the difference! Therefore, you can turn the heatdown in your house to as low as50 degrees, but the room you areoccupying, which has the Eden-PURE®, will be warm and com-fortable.

Your EdenPURE® GEN4 Port-able easily rolls from room to

room. Using zone heating keepsyou comfortable and reduces yourheating bills. This can drasticallycut heating bills; in some instances, the savings may be substantial.

The EdenPURE® will pay foritself in weeks. It will keep a greatdeal of extra money in a user’spocket. Because of today’s spiral-ing gas, oil, propane, and other en-ergy costs, the EdenPURE® willprovide even greater savings astime goes by.

With no increase in price, thenew EdenPURE® GEN4 has beenupdated with the latest technolo-gy, safety, and comfort features toprovide you with even greatercomfort, more savings, and yearsof reliability.

The EdenPURE® GEN4 Port-

able Heater comes with a compre-hensive five year warranty and a60-day, no questions asked, satis-faction guarantee – EdenPURE®

will even pay for the return ship-ping. There is absolutely no risk. And EdenPURE® is the only port-able heater with a National Ser-vice Network.

choose from: the new U.S. engi-neered GEN4 or our PersonalHeater. The GEN4 comfortablyheats an area up to 1,000 squarefeet while the Personal Heatercovers up to 300 square feet.
