    Who is theHoly Spirit?

    The Holy Spirit is theThird Person of theBlessed Trinity; he is

    God, like the Father andthe Son.

    This truth was revealedby Jesus, who said: Goand make disciples of all

    nations, baptizing themin the name of theFather, and of the Son,and of the Holy Spirit(Matthew 28:19).

    5. THE THIRD PERSON OF THE TRINITY:How do we prove that the Holy Spirit is God?

    2) The Baptism ofJesus. If the HolySpirit were not God, tosay that he came downlike a dove would besenseless.

    1) The incarnation ofChrist. If the Holy Spiritwere not God, Marywould have conceivedJesus on her own, butthis is impossible.

    The Holy Spirit is the breathof God, which is called ruahin Hebrew,pneuma inGreek, andspiritus in Latin.

    The breath of God gives

    life: God gave life to Adamby breathing into his nostrils;and Jesus gave the HolySpirit to the Apostles bybreathing

    The attribute Holy was addedto avoid any equivocationwith souls of the departed(spirits of the dead) or theangels (pure spirits).

    7. THE THIRD PERSON OF THE TRINITY:Why is the Holy Spirit called the Paraclete?

    The Holy Spirit is called the Paraclete, a Greek word which meansconsoler or advocate, for two reasons:1. Because in time of trial and suffering, the Holy Spirit is on our side

    to console and bring us peace.2. Because when we are brought to trial before men or God, the Holy

    Spirit will be on our side as a defense lawyer.

    8. THE THIRD PERSON OF THE TRINITY:Why is the Holy Spirit proceeding from

    the Father and the Son?

    To say that the HolySpirit proceeds from theFather and the Son

    means to profess thathe is of their samedivine substance.

    Macedonianism: This heresy denies the divinity of the HolySpirit, who is considered as a creation of the Son, and aservant of the Father and of the Son.

    Unitarianism: This heresy claims that only the Father isGod; that Jesus Christ was prophet created by God; and thatthe Holy Spirit is simply an abstract idea of the love of God.

    10. THE MANIFESTATIONS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT:What are the major manifestations of the Holy Spirit?

    1) The inspirationof the Bible. TheHoly Spirit inspiredthe sacred writersof the Scriptures (2Peter 1:20-21).

    2) The virginalconception. TheVirgin Maryconceived by theHoly Spirit (Luke1:35).

    3) The baptismof Jesus. TheHoly Spirit cameupon Jesus at theJordan River(Matthew 3:16).

    4) The Pentecost.The Holy Spiritdescended uponthe Apostles onPentecost day (Acts2:1-4).

    1) Water: The HolySpirit is representedby water because itrepresents the newlife we receive inBaptism.

    2) Oil: The HolySpirit isrepresented byoil because itsignifiesconsecration

    3) Fire: The HolySpirit isrepresented byfire because thelove of God is likea fire.

    4) Dove: The HolySpirit isrepresented by adove because itsignifies purity andholiness.

    The gifts, or charisms, ofthe Holy Spirit are thespiritual graces bestowedupon humans for the good ofthe Church and of the world.

    Each person is entrustedwith a particular charism;for instance, St. Francis wasgiven the charism of poverty;while St. Dominic that of

    preaching. The Seven Gifts of the Holy

    Spirit are the most importantcharisms bestowed by God.(Isaiah 11:2-3).

    It is the predisposition tojudge and order allthings according toGods will; and itscontrary is foolishness.

    The model of wisdom isKing Solomon (970-931BC). The Lord told him toask for any gift whatsoever such as riches, power,

    and glory; but insteadSolomon requested forwisdom to be able to guidehis people. (cf. 2 Chronicles1:7-12).

    The Second Gift:UNDERSTANDING

    It is the predisposition tocomprehend the truthsof our faith in an easy

    and profound way; itscontrary is unawareness.

    The model of understandingis St. Thomas Aquinas(1225-1274), who wasgiven the finest intellect tobe able to understand andexplain the truths of theChristian faith.

    It is the predispositionto discern correctly andimmediately the will ofGod in the differentcircumstances of our life.

    It is also calleddiscernment or rightjudgment, and its contraryis stubbornness.

    The model of counsel is

    St. Padre Pio ofPietrelcina (1887-1968),who was bestowed withthe gift of reading thepeoples mind and of

    foreseeing the future.

    The Fourth Gift:STRENGTH

    It is thepredisposition topersevere in fulfilling

    Gods will in momentsof trials. It is also calledfortitude, and itscontrary is weakness.

    The model of strength isthe Blessed VirginMary, because shepersevered in her faithagainst all odds.

    It is the predispositionto discover the truthsof the spiritual and

    material world, and torelate them to theCreator; its contrary isignorance.

    The model of knowledge is

    St. Francis of Assisi(111-1226), because hewas able to see in everycreature the manifestationof the love of God.

    It is the predispositionto worship God with allour heart, and to loveour neighbor asourselves. It is also called

    reverence, and its contraryis wickedness.

    The model of piety is St.Maximillian Kolbe (1894-1941), because he spent

    all of his life praying toGod; and he died offeringhis life for the salvation ofa fellow prisoner inAuschwitz.

    Sons of Holy Mary Immaculate

    It is the predispositionto respect the majestyof God and to bescared of sin. Fear is

    not terror, but the filialrespect for God, and itscontrary is disrespect.

    The model of the fear ofthe Lord is Abel, because

    he offered his best lambsto the Lord as a token ofrespect and love (cf.Genesis 4:3-5).

    How can we receive thegifts of the Holy Spirit?

    Sons of Holy Mary Immaculate

    The gifts of the Holy Spirit aregiven through Baptism,Confirmation, and prayer, asJesus said: Your Father inHeaven gives the Holy Spirit tothose who ask him (Luke11:13).

    St. Philip Neri used to ask

    daily for the Holy Spirit. On thevigil of Pentecost of 1544, hebecame so inflamed with divinelove that he shouted: Enough,O Lord! I am unable to bearsuch excessive happiness!
