Abstract:

FromMarch14throughMarch16,athermalenvelopeassessmentwasperformedoncampusbuildingsastheresultofapreviousSCGFproposal.Capitalizingonthepotentialenergyefficiencyupgradestotheresidentialbuildings

onGMCscampusisthenextnotablestepthecommunitycanmaketowardgreatlyreducingourcarbonfootprint.Thefocusofthispotentialworkisonatticspacesbuttheconditionandperformanceofwindows,doorsandfoundations/basementswasalsonoted.

Intotal,18buildingsweresurveyedoverthreedays.Inaddition,imagesoffacadesofothercampusbuildingswererecordedwithafocusonwindows,doorsandotherbuildingandarchitecturalelementsthatwereviewedtobecontributingtoconductiveandconvectiveheatloss.ThegoalofthisprojectwastocreateadatabaseofdoorsthatwouldbeusedbytheFacilities/MaintenanceDepartmenttoperformminor(lowornocost)maintenanceandrepairsinaprioritizedmanner

intendedtoyieldenergysavingsandcomfortimprovements.

Bymakingtheinitialinvestmentofweatherizingoneofthecampusdormitoriesitwillsavebothmoneyandenergyoveraperiodofthirtyyears.IftheupgradesproposedintheThermalAuditarecompleted,GMCcouldexpecttostartseeingreturnsbeyondtheinitialinvestmentinaslittleassevenyears.

Theneedtoimprovetheenergyefficiencyofthecampusbuildingsislongoverdue.Thestructurallyoldbuildingsthathouseourstudentsarehardlymodelsof

sustainability,andimprovementstoabuildingsthermalenvelopeisoneofthemostcost-effectivemethodsofincreasingoverallenergyefficiency.Additionally,GMCsnewpublicenergydashboardwhichallowsstudentstotrackenergyusefromallthebuildingsinreal-time,makesthisprojectallthemoreexciting.Thegrowinginterestinweatherization,energyefficiency,andsustainabledesignamongthestudentbodymakesthisprojecttimelierthanever.

Thesolutiontothisissueistoweatherizeoneofthecampusbuildingsinordertomakegooduseofourinvestmentontheaudit.3.Whowillbeimplementingthisproject?Willyoubehiringoutsidehelporexpertise?

Acombinationofoutsidecontractorsandstudenthelp(whereappropriate)wouldbethedrivingforcetocompletethisproject.Duetothetechnicalnatureoftheworkanoutsideexpertwouldbenecessary,however,withamyriadofconnectionsintheweatherizationindustryinVermont,findingacontractoratafairandaffordablerateshouldbefairlyeasy.4.Whatmaterialresourceswillyoubeusing/purchasing?Wherearetheyfrom?

Whatevermaterialsdeemedappropriatebythecontractorincludinginsulation,thermalbarriers,andairdamswillallbeutilizedasoutlinedintheoriginalaudit(attached).ThesematerialswillbesourcedfromlocalhardwarestoresandwillbeaslowinVOCsaspossibleforeffectivecompletionofsuchaproject.

RafterInsulation:CurrentlevelofR-19shouldbeincreasedtoasmuchasR-38usinghigh-densityFiberglasbattsthatare10high.Thiswillleavea2airspace

betweentheroofsheathingandtheinsulation.PressureBarrier:InstallTyvekorsimilartoeliminateairbypassinginsulationalongfrontstapledfaceandattopandbottomofrafters.EstimatedCost:

Insulation:$1.05-$1.30sq.ft.x6,000sq.ft.=$6,105-$7,800.
