PRIVATE COLLEGE LOANS: THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW
1. Turn to Credit Unions—Credit Unions, which are new players in
the private student loan world, almost always provide better interest
rates. Ironically, most people stick with the well-known lenders
even though their rates are typically higher.
2. Apply for multiple loans– At www.alltuition.com, a private college
loan comparison site, parents typically research many loans, but
rarely apply for more than one. Unfortunately, borrowers won’t
know what rate they qualify for unless they apply. It’s well worth
the effort.
3. Don’t assume you’ll get the lowest rate—The teaser rate on private
loans can look much more attractive than federal college loans.
www.finaid.org estimates that fewer than 5% of borrowers capture
the best rate. The difference between the lowest rate and the high-
est rate for an individual lender can be huge.
4. Ask the right questions—Before committing to a private loan, ask
these questions:
- What is the interest rate?
- Is the rate fixed or variable?
- Is there an interest-rate cap?
- What is the total cost of the loan?
- What are the student loan deferment options?
- Are there any additional fees?
- How difficult is it to consolidate loans after
graduation?
- Does the loan offer penalty-free pre-payments?

Employee Spotlight
Nancy Hi, I’m Nancy. I've been employed
with PFCU for 4 1/2 years. I live in
Rapid River, but was born in
Gladstone. I come from a large
family, who mostly all remain in
Gladstone. I am one of 11 children.
I have 2 children: Sam, who is a
senior at Gladstone High School this
year, and a daughter Audrey, who
just turned 29. She works the V.A.
Hospital in Iron Mountain,
Michigan.
I love working at the credit union.
I have great co-workers and they
have embraced me into the financial
“family” atmosphere. I have learned
so much about our community, and
also about myself since being
employed here. It’s a constant
learning experience, which is great
because it helps me grow as a
person.
I appreciate my job and our
Members who make up our credit
union. I plan on being here a long
time!

The United Way of Delta County kicked off their annual campaign on September 11th with
their tastiest fundraiser, “The Soup’r Chili Challenge.” Peninsula Federal Credit Union staff,
along with other organizations, cooked up and served gallons of Cheesy Potato Soup for the
community to come and enjoy. The theme was “Tailgate Party”. A fun and tummy filling
time was had by all participants and attendees!
