Congratulations to this year’s winner, Dr. Marti Morales-Ensign

Winning idea title:

“Replica of the Shephard’s Hook”

8th Annual Creativity Award Winner Announced

This year’s Creativity Award winner is Dr. Marti Morales-Ensign, professor of

Biology. She received a check for $1,000 for her winning idea “Replica of the

Shephard’s Hook.” The college will also provide up to $10,000 toward the

implementation of this project.

“My idea is that we should have on campus replica (metal material?) of the

Ribbon's Shepard's Hook placed on display. Let the AC community tie a ribbon

on such throughout the year when they have accomplished something pertaining

to the ROE values (it should be a reflection when someone feels they have

fulfilled such on their own). Each academic year, it starts over and new (not

permanent like the graduation one). By the end of the year, maybe it will be a

colorful display of all the wonderful accomplishments at AC has done.”

Phillip Schaedler – “Conversations with…”

“Throughout my travels lately I have encountered a variety of park benches on which are seated life size statues of various notable personalities from throughout American/world history (Franklin, Twain, Lin-coln, Gandhi, Kennedy, Will Rogers, etc.). I always try to have my picture taken with these figures, usu-ally posing as if I am having a conversation with them. What if we had such a park bench where students and visitors could have their picture taken while having a conversation with Laura Havilland, John Wes-ley, Elizabeth Chandler or George Romney (I admit this is somewhat self-serving but appropriate in as much as we will soon celebrate the anniversary of the founding of the Romney Institute and hope to in-vite Mitt Romney to commemorate the occasion). Such bench could be placed in a prominent location along with an inconspicuous plaque explaining the significance of that person to the history and mission of Adrian College.” – Phillip Schaeler

Morgan Tokles-Jones – “Sensory Room”

My idea is a sensory room in the library. It could be in one of the existing study rooms, the basement, or building a couple walls on the main floor. All students, faculty, and staff could have access to it. We have a plethora of students with anxiety, depression, on the autism spectrum, and simply stress. This room could be a space to go to 24/7 to calm down and unwind. A sensory room is a calming space with different toys, lights, sounds to relax your mind and body. The sensory room would be sound proof and have subtle non-led lights. Things I would put in the room are fiber optic sensory lights, those are strands of lights that you can touch and move. I would have a corner of crash mats, so that students can get the sensory input of pressure that some need in order to relax. I would have some type of adult swing, there are many out there but all serve the same purpose to give the calming rocking motion. I would have a couple weighted blankets and pillows. I would also have many small tactile fidgets. This room could serve so many students and be such a great space to relax and make the day easier. –Morgan Tokles-Jones

Lesley Dempsey – “Fitness Trail / Bulldog Mile”

“Fitness Trail - This could be the current Bulldog Mile or it could also head out to the back 40 via Creehan Lane OR it could be a combination of both depending on the length of the course. The general idea is a 1 to 2 mile trail that would have stations every quarter to half mile incorporating overall strength/core/flexibility exercises using your own body weight or potentially a small piece of multi-functional equipment.

For example, the first half mile could look like this...

Walk/Run/Sprint 1/4 mile, 25 Pushups, 25 Tricep Dips (using a bench or step potentially), 25 Squats,

1 Minute Plank Hold, 25 Jumping Jacks, 20 Lunges (10 each side)

My thought is there would be some sort of information board at each station with the exercises listed. Modifications could also be included for people who need them. We could even add a stretching station along the way.

I have been in the fitness industry for almost 30 years teaching classes, personal training, and directing programs. This type of workout is a great way to engage people of all ages and fitness levels while giv-ing them a full body workout. They could determine how difficult they make it by the effort they put into it. I think many could benefit from it including not only our students, staff, and faculty but also our local community.” – Lesley Dempsey

Rebecca Bordner – “The Happiness Wall”

Adrian College's mission statement emphasizes the importance of a supportive community throughout the college experience. The best way to ensure this, in my opinion, would be by having happy and productive college stu-dents who are excited to learn and truly appreciate how lucky they are to have the privilege of attending. So how do we make students happy with the stress of everyday life (exams, teachers, homework, social life, athletics, etc.)?

The Happiness Wall would be placed in Caine Student Center as a reminder for students to look on the bright side of situations and to recognize the little things in life that bring them the most joy. A Happiness Wall could either be electronic, or a physical wall where students could celebrate and inspire each other by simply sharing the things that make them happy. The Study of Happiness, a class that I have had the opportunity to enroll in this semester, has inspired me to become more positive, engaged, and fulfilled in my everyday life, and we have dis-cussed how beneficial this wall has been at other schools. This wall would act as a reminder for students, staff, and even visitors, of all of the happy things that make up a supportive community for all to thrive in. –Rebecca Bordner

Michael Douglas – “Gumball Machine”

“My idea is to put a large-sized Adrian College-themed gumball machine in the Caine Student Center. Many of these types of machines are between 6 to 7 feet tall. I think that it would fit the atmosphere of both the Caine

Student Center as well as the character of our unique student body. I believe that this machine would be great for student morale, and would become something that would become engrained in a potential student's mind when visiting campus, much like the pink flowers.” –Michael Douglas

Sadie Woodruff – “Bulldog Unity”

“A big statue in the shape of a bulldog made out of equipment from each sport and materials to also represent each club activity currently at Adrian College. This statue could be in the Merillat lobby, outside, or anywhere else on campus! The purpose would be to show that we are all family at Adrian College.” –Sadie Woodruff

Blake Hairston – “The Iconic A” & “A”

“A 3.5-4 ft cement "A" for all people who are Bulldog Proud to lean on just like our Adrian College logo. This would be placed at the end of the long walkway behind commencement plaza so as high school students finish tours they can have a photo opportunity with our beautiful campus as a background. I also imagine AC seniors using this spot to take photos in their cap and gown; I also imagine this to be a very popular spot for kids and alumni during homecoming or random visits to campus. The Iconic A could become a staple to the campus and could "put the cherry on top" of our already amazing entrance way.”

Also, “As an alumnus of Adrian College, I’ve had many ideas come across my mind on how to add features to the campus. While some would most likely go further than the $10,000 allowance, I believe this idea would be a great fit. My idea is called the “A”.

As we all know, our primary college logo is our mascot, Bruiser, leaning on a block A. This logo symbolizes the “Bulldog Proud” statement many show every day. However, why not give the opportunity for us to be Bruiser too?

The “A” would be a 4 to 4 ½ foot cement A (in similar style to the Expect to Win statue) coming straight up from the ground so students, faculty, alumni, and visitors can lean on the “A” just like Bruiser. Attached I sup-plied photos of two locations where the “A” could fit best. Location 1: on the walkway between Commencement Plaza and Madison St. This location is where most Admissions student tours end and could be a great area for a photo opportunity. Location 2: Down the stairs of the terrace in front of Caine Student Center. This is another popular area for photos to be taken. Since Caine is a main location on campus for Greek life events, Scholarship Days, and more, this could be an ideal spot as well.

The “A” would just be another addition to our campus to provide a sense of school spirit and everyone will want their pictures taken with the A. From high school students excited about their commitment, to AC seniors taking senior pictures. I see traditions beginning once the “A” gets build such as freshmen-to-senior transformation pho-tos, “Paint the A” for a good cause, and more. I appreciate your consideration for my idea.” –Blake Hairston
