October 2013 Lesson- Mondrian Designs 8 th Grade Teacher: Bill Moakler Sacred Heart School Objectives: Each student will create one abstract design in the style of Mondrian, using a diamond format. Students will draw their designs using horizontal & vertical lines. Students will use five colors in total, including black & white. Previous Knowledge The eighth grade students are familiar with how to create a design using different styles and materials. They are also familiar with the primary, secondary, and neutral colors. Materials: 12” x 12” drawing paper, pencils, rulers, erasers, Sharpie markers, color pencils, crayons, and color markers. Motivation: Show students the abstract paintings of Piet Mondrian. Procedure: 1. Create class discussion about Mondrian’s artwork “Victory Boogie Woogie.” Emphasize to students his use of vertical and diagonal lines and his use of primary colors. 2. Students tape 12"x 12"paper as a diamond on their desks. 3. Students draw their designs using pencil, rulers, and erasers. 4. Students color their designs using five colors. 5. Students answer five questions about their designs, including titling their pictures.
