The Research Question Model

Creative Production

O Creative Production

& ExegesisO 2 parts of the

same research question

Page 4: Creative Production as Research O Dr Ann Schilo. Program O 10.00 Ann outlines key aspects of creative production research in relation to the candidacy

Sample research question 1

O This project explores a research question that will have two linked outcomes: a novel and an exegesis. The research question asks:

O How can one represent an understanding of girl’s sexual subjectivity that resists and renegotiates the discursive construction of the girl in contemporary culture as hyper-sexy and thus sexualised?

Page 5: Creative Production as Research O Dr Ann Schilo. Program O 10.00 Ann outlines key aspects of creative production research in relation to the candidacy

Sample research question 2

O My central research question asks: how has Japonism informed and contributed to contemporary Australian printed textile design?

O Through a textual and aesthetic analysis I will research how a Japanese influence has been utilised, defined and interpreted and what this has signified for both individual designers and for Australian material culture collectively.

O This research will guide my creative studio practice of designing illustrative digitally printed serial structures (repeating patterns) of Australian flora and fauna on cloth. Utilising a traditional Japanese use of pictorial space, asymmetrical and organic forms I aim to contribute significant new work to the contemporary design profile of Australian printed and patterned textiles.

Sample research question 3

O How do specific built environments in Malaysia contribute to the practices and maintenance of state power?

O The thesis will consist of: a creative production project that will be made of several series of artwork produced consistently throughout the research process. These series will be compiled into one exhibition at the end of the research duration; an exegesis that will combine ongoing literature review, analysis and writing, which will be compiled into one written format at the end of the research duration.

Reciprocity

There needs to be a reciprocal relationship between the on-going literature review, analysis, and writing of the exegesis and the development of the creative project.

The Permanent RecordO It is necessary to create a permanent

record of the exhibition, performance, recital etc.

O Form must be appropriate to the discipline field – e.g. in visual arts a superior catalogue is professional standard.

O Use appropriate technologies – real time footage, digital images, bound folio of technical drawings

Page 9: Creative Production as Research O Dr Ann Schilo. Program O 10.00 Ann outlines key aspects of creative production research in relation to the candidacy

Reflective Exercise O Imagine 2-3 years in the future. You

are about to submit your thesis for examination.

O Write 4-5 sentences describing the thesis that you are presenting.

Page 10: Creative Production as Research O Dr Ann Schilo. Program O 10.00 Ann outlines key aspects of creative production research in relation to the candidacy

Discussion Exercise O Listen as each member of your group

in turn describes their thesis submission.

O Provide each person with appropriate feedback.

O In your response consider whether they have clearly explained their thesis.

O If it is a creative production project have they revealed the answer to their research question through 2 parts: creative production and exegesis?

ReflectionsO What should be stated in the various

sections: the objectives, background and methodology to clearly explain your creative production thesis to candidacy reviewers?

O Have you fully considered the exhibition or production component if you are working in visual arts or performance fields?

O If you are undertaking a creative production project are you able to clarify the two parts that answer the same research question?

O What format will your permanent record take?

The ExegesisO The following slides are just a few

examples of traditional exegeses that can be found through google image search.

O They are an indication that, just because a document is a written academic text, it doesn’t mean that attention to illustration layout or imagery is not as important as the theoretical content.
