FROM THE PRINCIPAL

FROM THE PRINCIPAL WEEK 6

Week 5 was an exciting week, Year 9 participated in their yearly camp and Year 11 completed their Mid Course examinations. There were some great cultural and sporting excursions for students to enjoy.

CAPTAINS ATTEND ROTARY

On Wednesday 24 May I had the privilege of attending the Port Macquarie Rotary Club meeting with three of our school captains; Shawn, Tayla and Arkitlah, Isabelle had to send her apologies as she was sick. The focus of the night was leadership. I spoke about leadership in the school in terms of students, teachers and the college itself. Shawn spoke about the SRC and Tayla and Arkitlah spoke about what it meant to them to be receiving scholarships from Rotary to go to Luminosity. The leaders of Luminosity explained how it started and what was in this year’s program. It was a wonderful night with the school being offered two more Luminosity scholarships and a business mentoring opportunity. I publically acknowledge our strong partnership with Rotary and the benefit it brings to our students.

INTERVIEW WITH SAMANTHA BRENNAN AND MICHAEL WALSH

I very much enjoyed watching Meander Down Broadway at The Glasshouse. Samantha Brennan

and Michael Walsh were part of the cast. Samantha has been presenting on the Glasshouse Stage since primary school. She cut short her Creative Industries excursion to Sydney to appear in Meander Down Broadway. She did a solo performance of, ‘Everything Else’ from the musical Next to Normal and was a lead in the finale, ‘You Can’t Stop the Beat’ from Hairspray. Samantha enjoys the professionalism of working at the Glasshouse. She has appeared in several Players Theatre productions including Little Shop of Horrors, Camp Rock, Anything Goes and the Wizard of Oz. She was in our school production, ‘Popstars’ last year. Samantha is in the Stage 5 Creative Industries class. On the excursion she particularly enjoyed visiting the Australian Institute of Music and their professional studios. Her favourite musical is Hamilton and she can’t wait for it to be produced in Australia.

Michael is a trumpet player playing in the school band and an actor. He found his passion for acting in his Creative Industries Academy. He decided to forgo his excursion so he could concentrate on Meander Down Broadway. He likes straight theatre as well as musicals. He has been in Puss In Boots and his favourite musical is the Book of Mormon. He was in several of the ensemble sections of the production including Hello from the Book of Mormon. Michael enjoys the way theatre gives him amazing opportunities and the opportunity to meet

amazing people. I expect to hear more about the work of these outstanding students.

MY DAY WITH THE ‘COMMUNITY AWARENESS OF POLICING’

I have always been aware of the amazing job that the police do to try to keep our community safe. My admiration was deepened, however, by attending the ‘Community Awareness of Policing’ Program at the Port Macquarie Police Station. A wide range of business and community members attended. The day started with an Acknowledgement of Country by Uncle Bill and an introduction to a variety of police staff. It was explained to us that policing was becoming more proactive, with an emphasis on targeting repeat offenders. One of the detectives took us through a murder scenario from the crime, to investigation, to prosecution. We moved outside to get an insight into how police respond to emergency situations and we were able to see responses to situations involving knives and those involving guns. It was clear how highly trained the response officers were and how they put their lives on the line to protect us. In the afternoon we were witnesses to a mock crime and went through the process of investigation, arrest and prisoner processing. The day ended with a look at the latest highway patrol cars and their command centre. The whole day was an amazing insight into police

and the variety of the work that they do. I thank Mid North Coast Command for this wonderful opportunity.

THE RURAL AND REMOTE SECONDARY PRINCIPAL’S GROUP

Last Monday I flew to Sydney to attend a meeting of a NSW Principal’s Council (SPC) interest group. We were writing a position paper on rural and remote education from the viewpoint of high and central schools. It is important that we make clear what we feel is needed to promote quality, equitable education for those outside metropolitan areas (40% of all students in secondary education in NSW). We tried to focus on our key areas of staffing, student welfare and curriculum access. Our work will now go through a consultation process with the executive and members of the SPC.

We have a busy fortnight coming up with our Zenith evening and our Year 10 into 11 subject selection night.

MATHLETICS

Our school has been entered into the Mathletics Open Month. This challenge is open until 16 June 2017 and focuses on students mastering the curriculum and practising their mental Mathematics skills. Prizes are awarded to top performing schools. Last year the school and some selected students attended the finals night. Both the students and the school won prizes. So don’t hesitate to join in on the fun and maybe you to could win a prize. If you can’t remember your username and password check with your teacher or come to the Maths Staffroom.

Come on Port Campus let’s unleash our Mathematical abilities and put our school on the map.

YEAR 8 MATHEMATICS DAY

On Friday 12 May we had seven lucky children attend the Year 8 Maths Day at the University of New England in Armidale. We started the day with a long bus trip departing at 5am with our fellow Hastings Secondary College Westport Campus. Unfortunately, we arrived a little late and the students had to take on the first two tasks, “free for all” and “jigsaw”, with an empty stomach. They still performed well and after a couple of servings of morning tea they took on some teams in the head-to-head challenge. They then did the ‘Smorgasbord.’ This activity contained questions they could choose ranging from 2 points, 3 points and 4 points. After this activity, they took on the team challenge, building the highest tower with 15 sheets of paper and some sticky tape. They made impressive towers but, unfortunately, they missed out on the prize. On the way home we called into the spectacular Apsley Falls. The students had a fun day working together. Thanks for a great day team.

Declan Pitt, Hector Skene, Bridget Flint, Mekhi Bennetts, Alyssa Katis, Ritchie Whitehouse and Isaac Long.

YEAR 7 TO 9 MATHEMATICS HALF YEARLY EXAMS

Your exams are on Monday 5 to 7 of June. Please ensure you bring a scientific calculator to the exam. We only have a limited supply for students who forgotten them.

ATHLETICS CARNIVAL

A beautiful Port Macquarie day greeted students for our Campus Athletics Carnival on 18 May. Participation was excellent, and there were many outstanding individual performances. The House games ran by Mrs Moylan and Mr Rogers were also a highlight.

The Age Championships are still alive, with a number of events like the 400, 1500 and triple jump due to be run during Sport time on Wednesday 31 May. These champions will be announced next week.

The highest house point score was easily won by Lighthouse who had the most participants and also scored more points in results. Well done to all students for your efforts, especially those dressed in yellow.

The Zone Athletics team for the carnival to be held at Nambucca Heads on 16 June is looking strong, and will also be finalised after Wednesday’s events. The team will be listed outside the PE Staffroom. The next newsletter will have final information.

UNDER 15’S BOYS FOOTBALL

The under 15’s boys football team bowed out in the second round on Monday after a loss to Westport Campus on penalties. After totally dominating them and even holding a two nil lead, the team squandered too many good chances. They let Westport back into the game after a great individual run from one of their players in which he went past 3 to 4 defenders and finished well. Then a long ball through to a quick striker was our undoing. It was to be one of those frustrating games! When the game went into extra time there was only one team that really looked like scoring (us) but, we didn’t take our chances and even hit the post at the end. When it came to the penalty shootout we missed our first 3 shots and they scored theirs. Thus the end for this year and the final chapter of the Bill Turner Cup for our 15 year olds in Year 9. Thanks for your service. We wish Westport Campus the best of luck in the next round.

ZONE CROSS COUNTRY

Over 30 cross country runners represented Port Macquarie Campus for the Zone Cross Country held at the Kempsey Racecourse. Each of these runners put in a fantastic effort, not only in running but also in being very supportive of their team mates.

Port Macquarie Campus came first in the overall point score, gaining 426 points. The second placed school was Nambucca Heads on 295.

The following students gained a place in their age group and will compete at the Regional Cross Country held at Murwillumbah on 9 June. Congratulations to the entire team!

STATE FOOTBALL CARNIVAL

Congratulations to Kane Pollard and Oscar Brotherston who represented the North Coast at the recent C.H.S. Carnival held in Griffith. Oscar is a courageous shot stopper in goals and Kane is an attacking forward with silky skills and speed. Both boys were noted by their coach as being outstanding representatives of their school who made significant contributions on the field to the performance of their team. Well done boys!

SORRY DAY MORNING TEA

Students from Hasting Secondary College Port Macquarie Campus were proud and respectful representatives at the Sorry Day Morning Tea hosted by the Birpai Local Aboriginal Land Council on Friday 26 May. After a Welcome to Country by Uncle Bill, Kellie O'Brien from Port Macquarie Hastings Council described the significance of Sorry Day. Uncle Bill and Acting Mayor, Lisa Intemann, then lit a candle for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children who were taken away. A bush tucker morning tea followed with a variety of tasty treats like lemon myrtle cheesecake, damper with local jams and specially prepared bush tucker jam drops.

Our students were praised for their participation in this event. They were wonderful ambassadors for our school.

ARTEXPRESS STUDENT RECIEVES HIGH PRAISE

Former student, Christian Familar, has received the highest possible praise for his work currently on display in the touring Artexpress exhibition. Christian’s 2016 HSC major works ‘After Archibald’ appropriates portraits of Archibald prize entrants. Christian recently received a personal message from artist Abdul Abdullah (pictured with original work) congratulating him on his excellent

work and commenting how much he liked it. Christian’s work is a part of the regional touring Artexpress exhibition and can be seen at Moree Regional Gallery, followed by Grafton Regional Gallery from 16 June.
