Surprise guestswith these lushplace mats.

1. Make a 14- x 18-inch

template from cardboard.

2. Using a marker, trace the

template onto the back of

a piece of indoor/outdoor

carpet (#151360). Repeat

for the number of place mats

you need.

3. Use sharp utility scissors

to cut the pieces of carpet.

(One square yard or 3 linear

feet of carpet should yield

four place mats.)

whatagre1. Wrap a string of outdoor

lights (at least 6 feet in length)

around a 6-foot-long bamboo

stake (#56475). Leave about

10 inches at one end of the

stake free of lights. Secure

the lights to the stake using

clear packing tape.

2. Push the end of the stake

(that is free of lights) into the

ground. Connect an outdoor

extension cord to the lights,

hiding and securing the

cord as needed.

3. Thread five paper lanterns

(#237095) onto the stake as

shown. Gently bend each

lantern’s internal wire frame

to clear the stake. You will

not need the electrical

cording included with

the lanterns.

For the horizontal

hanging version of

this project: Use only

four lanterns so that

10 inches at each end

of the stake is free of

lights and lanterns. Cut

and then attach a length

of nylon twine (#91114) to

each end of the stake. Tie the

other ends of twine to porch

posts or hooks, making sure

the stake hangs evenly.

❉ OUTDOOR LIVING Children’s Garden

Plant for SuccessEnsure that your child’s first foray into gardeningwill be successful.

■ Choose small plants from thegarden center rather thangrowing vegetables from seed.■ Opt for hybrid varieties, which better resist disease.■ Set out plants after the lastpredicted frost.

How doesyour gardengrow? Withhelp fromyour kids.

Cultivating vegetablesand fruits can be rewarding for children as well as adults. As a fun project that you can do together, a kid-friendly garden teaches children howplants grow and where veggiescome from—before they findtheir way to the supermarket. And for more helpful plantingtips on vegetable gardens, visitLowes.com/Vegetables.

LowesCreativeIdeas.com 15

Alsoon theMenuThere are plenty of tasty options beyond tomatoes.

■ Enjoy the sweet fragrance of herbs such as lavender and rosemary. ■ Grow peas on a trellis or tepee for fun architecture in the garden.■ Plant peppers, but avoidspicy varieties such asjalapeños—hot!

Teaching GardenGet children involved in the process betweenplanting and harvesting.

■ Mulch around plants to hold the water in and keep the weeds out.■ Entrust the kids with the jobof watering plants a few timesa week.■ Loosely tie off plants to stakesusing twine as the plants startgrowing tall.

You Say TomatoTomatoes, especially smaller varieties, make great plants for a children’s garden.

■ Call them fruits (their truescientific classification), not veggies. ■ Plant tomatoes in full sun for best results.■ Try cherry tomatoes; they’llreach maturity earlier.

❉ OUTDOOR LIVING Children’s Garden

Safety FirstIt’s a lot of fun being outside, but there are some dangers inherent to the outdoors, such as bugs and poisonous plants. Follow these tips to keep your kids out of harm’s way.

■ BANISH BUZZ By eliminating standing water, you can reduce the number of mosquitoes living in your yard. You also could buy a bug-inhibiting system.

■ KEEP IT CLEAN Remove large rocks and bareroots that could cause children to trip and fall. Also, make sure your yard is free of harmful plants, suchas poison ivy.

■ STAY AWARE Be sure to watch your childrenwhen they’re playing or planting outdoors. Kids are curious and could wander, getting into unforeseen hazards.

PlantaPumpkinKids love pumpkins! Now your childcan grow the mother of all jack-o-lanternswith Dill’s Atlantic Giant pumpkin seeds(#209143), available only at Lowe’s. Thesepumpkins consistently reach massivesizes; the largest on record weighed an eye-popping 1,500-plus pounds! Purchase the seeds at the Lowe’s Garden Center, and then go to

❉ DECORATING Bath

Big

A spring-fresh paletteand clever storage solutions work wondersfor this formerlycramped bath.

Little Space,

White OnChosen for its light, open feel, whitepaint covers the upper half of the wallsthroughout the room. The white alsomeshes well with existing features, such as the window shutters, that thehomeowner wanted to keep. And now, when paired with white, the green tile feels restful and serenerather than dated.

Payoff

The outdated, busy wallpaper contributed to the closed-in feelingof the room. Thepedestal sink beggedfor organization underneath.

THE SPACE: The home’s

historic charm suited this

owner in many ways, but the

dark, cramped quarters of her

only bath wasn’t one of them.

The Creative Ideas design

team focused on cosmetic

changes, a crisp new palette,

and more efficient storage.

THE PERSON: Single woman

living in 1930s condo seeks

brighter bath with an up-to-

date design and more storage.

Bound by her budget, a total

gut was simply out of the

question, so she determined

that the sink, tile, and toilet

could stay.

LowesCreativeIdeas.com 19

The radiator(that’s no longerin use) and the recessed shelfabove the sinkwere coated withprimer and paintedto match the tile, making them less obtrusive.

20

❉ DECORATING BathAimHigh1 Mounting a shelf above the door is a clever way to utilize unused space; it also raises the eye upward. Thewhite beaded-board ceiling lends textural interest.2 A rectangular mirror was placed horizontally to reflect the scope of the room. Reflective accents, such asmirrors, are an easy and inexpensiveway to make a space seem bigger. 3 Beneath the sink, a simple skirt was created by sewing a white fabric shower curtain. It’s attached to the sink with self-fastening strips. An opening in the skirt’s center allows easy access to the concealed plumbing and toiletries.

Good To KnowWhite isn’t the only option for making

a small room seem larger—almost

any light tone will work. If you want

to introduce bold color into a small

space, go progressively paler from

floor to ceiling, creating a sense

of height and avoiding a

boxed-in feeling.

❉ FOUND SPACE Weekend Project

Leveling theground andadding paversturned the cornerof this backyardinto usable outdoor space.

BEFORE When looking for extra living space, this

suburbanite decided to focus outdoors on his neglected

backyard. With a cramped patio, a chain-link fence,

and an uninviting landscape, the yard lacked style,

but it was the perfect canvas for crafting a functional

outdoor room.

To transform the area, the homeowner extended

the patio, added all-season plants, and invested in

a new gas grill. Keeping costs low and impact high,

he tamed his backyard jungle and created a cozy

terrace ideal for sitting down with a good book or

hosting an impromptu barbecue with friends.

This homeownerunearthed thehidden potentialin his forgottenbackyard. Youcan too!

he screened-in porch at

the rear of this family’s house

had one major thing going for it:

its size. But it was only usable

during the best weather.

By adding sliding windows

and new doors, the space is transformed

into an all-season sunroom. During

good weather, the open windows

allow air to circulate, blurring the lines

between indoors and out. When it’s

cold or rainy, the homeowners can

close the windows and still enjoy the

space. New paint, flooring, lighting,

and furnishings brighten the room and

tie the look together. And now that

this area is appealing to the family

as well as to guests, a new hospitality

center and adjacent outdoor patio with

a grill make it a hot spot when the

homeowners entertain.

“With this sunroom, we spendmore time together than ever .”

What They DidTHE CHALLENGE:

This active family could only enjoy their screened-in porch a few months out of the year.

Although the room had ample space for gathering, it was in need of new flooring, a bright wall color,

and updated furnishings.

THE SOLUTION:The homeowners replaced the screens with sliding

windows and new doors to create an all-season sunroom that can be enjoyed alfresco or enclosed. New surfaces and dashes of

color give the space a lighthearted, cottage-comfortable spin.

1Freestanding storage units—whichwere constructed from poplar boards,

plywood, and beaded-board paneling—create shelving around the TV. » SPLURGE APPROACH: Design a wallunit with customized kitchen cabinetry.

2The brick walls were painted a softcream color for a restful background.

» BUDGET-FRIENDLY OPTION: Leave theexposed brick unpainted for an edgier look.

3Three new ceiling fans overheadkeep the room comfortable during

the warmer months; their light color allows them to blend more with the ceiling. » BUDGET-FRIENDLY OPTION: Install justone fan, or try out the space without them. You can add them next year if needed.

4New V-groove pine paneling onthe ceiling, coated with a clear finish,

emphasizes the casual cottage feel of thespace. » BUDGET-FRIENDLY OPTION:

Paint the original ceiling a light color.

5Sconces with an oil-rubbed bronzefinish are mounted to each post for

additional lighting. » BUDGET-FRIENDLY

OPTION: Use a fan/light combination forgeneral lighting, and then add a couple ofstanding lamps or sconces.

6Sliding windows transform theporch into an all-weather retreat. They

minimize the visual boundaries between thesunroom and the yard. » BUDGET-FRIENDLY

OPTION: Take a staged approach. Installnew windows this year, and then updatethe ceiling and floors next year.

3Eighteen-inch-square beige tiles, used throughout the sunroom,

supplanted the old concrete flooring. The tiles make for easy wiping of muddyfootprints (and paw prints) tracked in fromoutside. » BUDGET-FRIENDLY OPTION:

4Maple base cabinets, painted a soft beige, offer a place to store

Frugal FloorIf you have a concrete floor

that’s smooth and in good shape, staining it (rather than covering it)can be a budget-friendly option.

Concrete stain, which comes in an array of colors, costs

approximately $25 per gallon. A gallon will cover around

400 square feet.

Smart ChoicesIf you like the look of this sunroom but you have a smaller space or budget, consider forgoing some elements or installing them at a later date. For example, the hospitality center is a welcome amenity, but you’ll still have an attractive, functional space without it—and you’ll shave more than $3,000 off the price tag. Similarly, the outdoor patio area can easily be omitted oradded in the future.

This room is designed for minimalmaintenance. I t’s all about fun .

THE COOLFACTOR

Whether you’re indoors or out, beat the heat and save energy with a ceiling fan.

OUTDOORINDOOR Chosen effectively, a ceiling fan can lower

your air-conditioning bills and add to your home’s style.

To pick the right fan for your space, first read our Q&A

on fan factors, and then check out the latest indoor and

outdoor options from Lowe’s.

Q How high do I hang it?A fan works best when it’s installed 7 to 9 feet above the

floor, and 10 to 12 inches below the ceiling. For ceilings

above 10 feet, you’ll want to add an extension rod to lower

your fan. Note: For safety, a ceiling fan should not be used

in a room with ceilings lower than 8 feet.

Q How much will it cool? The larger the fan, the better it cools. A fan with a diameter

of 36 to 44 inches will cool up to 225 square feet (on average,

15 x 15 feet). A fan with a diameter of 52 inches will cool a

larger space, but you’ll want to use multiple fans in a room

longer than 18 feet.

Q Does blade size matter? The blade width and shape will vary among fan designs.

Larger blades will turn at a slower velocity and are less

likely to create a breeze that will disturb loose papers or

other objects. Otherwise, blades are relatively equal in

cooling capacity; their size and shape mostly affect style.

Q Will it really help me conserve energy?Turning the thermostat up just 2 degrees and using a

ceiling fan on hotter days can lower your air-conditioning

costs by up to 14% over the span of a cooling season.

Look for a fan with a reversible setting—used in cool

months, it keeps heat from rising to your ceiling. Also,

consider models that are ENERGY STAR® qualified.

TREND UPDATE

Cottage style is hotter than ever, andbeaded-board paneling is one of its essential elements. In this kitchen,

beaded board was used for the backsplash and on the ceiling, but it also can be added in a living room,

bedroom, bath, or an enclosed porch to lend a casual feel. A Small

“I can’ t believe this is the same space . I actually have room

to cook now .”

What She DidTHE CHALLENGE: The kitchen inthis home was outdated and far lessthan functional. The homeownerhad only 2 feet of countertop spaceand inadequate cabinetry.

THE SOLUTION: Moving the waterheater from the kitchen to the atticfreed up room for a pantry. Thehomeowner added floor-to-ceilingcabinetry and an extra workstation, gaining much more drawer andcountertop space. She purchasednew appliances, including a built-indishwasher to replace the oldportable model. Beaded-boardpaneling, wide trim and moulding, a farmhouse sink, seeded-glasscabinetry door fronts, and woodencountertops all contribute to thekitchen’s updated cottage style.

1

2She loved her 1920s bungalow, butthe poorly configured appliances andlimited work areas caused her to cookmost of her dinners in the microwave.By applying small-space solutions andchoosing products that matched herbudget, she gained all the ingredientsof a successful kitchen makeover—andthe seamless cottage style is like thesweet icing on the cake.

1 The farmhouse sink was a must-havesplurge item for the homeowner, whowanted to retain the vintage charm of her cottage. The complementarystainless faucet is simple and practical.

2 This freestanding range and a microwave/hood combination, both in a stainless-look finish, were placed together vertically for a more efficientfood-preparation area.

They require special maintenance, such as reapplying oil, but the longevity and beauty are well worth it.3 An island wasn’t possible in this small kitchen, but a cabinetry workstation providing countertopspace plus storage for cookware fulfills the same purpose. The cabinets’smoky-blue glaze adds a splash of color in the otherwise white kitchen.4 Seeded-glass cabinetry door fronts impart the feel of a country cottage.Open shelving helps the room seemcasual and inviting.

Small-SpaceStrategies■ Go vertical. Extend the cabinets up to the ceiling or crown mouldingto use all available space.

■ Organize. Choose cabinets anddrawers that offer organizational inserts, or add inserts to your existing cabinetry.

■ Consider the use. Think aboutwhat you use daily versus infrequently.Open shelving and clear-glass cabinetry door fronts make it easy to see everyday dishware. Upper cabinets are perfect for special china or rarely used appliances.

■ Color counts. While kitchens are all about function, choosing white or a light paint color makes a smallspace feel airier and larger.

■ Appliance options. This homeownerchose full-size appliances, but thereare options for smaller, hardworkingrefrigerators or ranges.

■ Expect the unexpected. Figure out the maximum amountyou can afford for your kitchen remodel, and then decrease thatamount by 20% to determineyour budget. You’ll have paddingfor the unplanned expenses thatalmost always occur.

■ Pick and choose. Decide what’smost important to you. Do youwant new countertops but likeyour range? Then opt for thecountertops of your choice, such as granite or butcher block, and pass on the new range. Alternately, cabinetry and countertops can siphon the bulkof your budget. If you’re okaywith the look of your kitchen but want the latest culinary technology, then replace all your appliances and simply paint your cabinets.

■ Stick to the plan. You canmake small decisions that addup to a big expense. Take a stepback before adding new itemsthat weren’t in your original plan.

Although the historic schoolhouse-

turned-weekend-getaway had great

architectural bones and a solid structure,

it lacked clear walkways, vitality, and

cheerful color. Taking design cues from

Upstate New York cottages as well as

traditional Greek Revival schoolhouses,

the homeowner began the update by

creating better access to the front and

side entrances via a walkway made

with interlocking pavers.

With both entrances clearly marked,

the homeowner could focus on the

landscape. A white picket fence, also

reminiscent of traditional Colonial style,

creates a border around the home’s

lawn and complements the front railing.

Small boxwoods were added in front

of the railing and along the fence. In the

planting beds on the side of the house,

the homeowner planted ornamental

grasses and shrubs, and finished the

look with planters and a trellis.

Green-and-white striped awnings

over the front windows enhance the color

scheme, while yellow paint on the door

provides a focal point for passersby.

A heavy pitched entry was removed

for a fresher look.

Landscape TipThe homeowner chose boxwoods that are young and small in size to keep the initial cost of the makeover at a minimum—the plants will fill the space as they grow. Selecting more mature plantsresults in a bigger, faster impact.

This home receives lessons on adding personality.

After relocating to the Southeast, this

New England native wanted to bring a

Cape Cod feel to her new home. She

began the transformation with the front

windows. Thick casing and cross-shaped

panes make a bold statement across

the exterior and help to establish the

home’s presence.

Next, the homeowner replaced her

existing siding on the front of the house

with cedar shingles to capture the New

England look. She plans to cover the

remainder of the exterior at a later date.

To expand the existing entry’s tiny

stoop, she had a landing built at the

top of the steps so that she would have

more space when entering the home.

The cloth awning was replaced with a

wooden pitched roof and post. Also

during the renovation, the homeowner’s

contractor installed a new wooden railing

to replace the small metal support that

was not compliant with the modern

local building code.

Finally, a new wooden door, painted

a calm deep green prior to installation,

adds a touch of color to the entry.

Finishing touches include lighting

and new shrubs with mulch.

When it comes to actively serving

their community, Lowe’s employees are

a dedicated group. Giving their time

and sharing their talents, the employees

of the Van Buren, Ark., store helped to

provide a local resident with safe and

affordable housing that accommodates

his lifestyle. As part of a five-year

partnership between Lowe’s and

Habitat for Humanity, store employees

participated in a construction project that

was coordinated by the Arkansas Valley

Habitat for Humanity (AVHFH). Part of

the Women Build program, the home

was built in Van Buren over a period of

four months in late 2006.

In a wheelchair since the age of

13, the 39-year-old Habitat homeowner

moved in and out of inadequate

subsidized housing over the past several

years. He desired an affordable home

where he could live independently.

Recognizing his need, AVHFH approved

his new home application and called

on Lowe’s for help—having worked on

a previous project with AVHFH, the Van

Buren store welcomed the chance to

pitch in again. “We felt there was a real

need here,” said Ivan Devitt, store

manager. A $15,000 grant from Lowe’s

helped fund the construction, but

contributions also poured in from

around the community. “When other

businesses in the area found out what

Lowe’s employees join with Habitat for Humanity to construct a home in Van Buren,Ark.,using principles of universal design.

THIS MONTH:

Van BurenArkansas

the store was doing, they contributed to

help finish out the costs,” Devitt says.

In addition to landscaping and

smaller projects, the Van Buren store

employees instructed the all-women

volunteer team in home-building. Held

in one-hour sessions, the how-to classes

were offered at the store on Saturdays

throughout August and September. Eight

employees led the sessions starting with

power tool use and safety, and moving to

framing, roofing, installing siding and

drywall, trim work, and painting.

Work on the house took place on

Saturdays, and despite a few weather

delays, construction and landscaping

were completed in early December as

scheduled. Because of the homeowner’s

special needs, Devitt explains that the

house needed to fit the footprint of a

Habitat house and also be accessible

for everyone, which includes specific

design elements such as an open floor

plan, wider hallways, and more space

to accommodate the homeowner’s

wheelchair turns.

Volunteer coordinator for the Women

Build group, Becky Neighbors, credits

the invaluable assistance of the store

team. “Lowe’s recognized the need to

help equip the women of this area,” she

said. “We have enlisted a small army in

this project, and I would like to thank

the Lowe’s and Habitat partnership for

giving us this opportunity.”

for Humanity’s Women Build program,

which empowers women to help

eliminate substandard housing.
