Teaching Your Children to Be Thankful

It’s no secret that thankful children are happier and more polite but raising

children to be thankful for all they have is more important than making more

pleasant kids – it’s about teaching them to be caring and sensitive to the feelings

of others.

While some may feel that toddlers are a bit young to learn gratitude, children as

young as 18 months can start to grasp that concept. They know that they are

dependent on mommy and daddy to take care of their needs and those needs

being taken care of make them happy and they begin to, even at that very young

age, appreciate it.

Teaching children to be thankful can be done easily enough. They imitate the

adults around them – especially parents – so be sure to use words like “please”

and “thank you” often. Good manners lead to sincere gratitude. Here are few

ways to teach your children to be thankful:

Have your children help with chores and tasks around the house. Give

your child a chore that he or she can handle and avoid the temptation to

jump and finish it for them. By allowing them to do simple things around

the house they learn to appreciate what we as parents do.

Have your child help with a charitable project. This doesn’t mean take

them to the soup kitchen on a regular basis. A nice project could be

making a cake or soup for a sick neighbor.

Teach your children, and encourage them, to be generous. If they have

several old toys that they don’t play with anymore, or clothes that they

have outgrown but are still in good shape have them donate them to

Goodwill.

Learn to say no. All of our children want something new every time we

turn around. But we aren’t teaching them anything if we say “yes” to

everything they ask for. Learning to say no for every request and only

saying yes to special things will teach your children to be grateful for

what they get and what they have.

Teaching children to be thankful can be tricky but it must be done in order to

help them become better functioning adults.

Get Your Children Fit with These Kid-Friendly Exercises

Physical fitness should start early. As

worries about obesity and nutrition fill

the media, parents are taking more

active steps to ensure that their children

learn good exercise habits while they’re

young. Here are a few simple routines

(from the Parenting.com website) that

can promote good health and fun for

your entire family:

• Pushups. Have your child get into a

raised pushup position. Then go through

the ABCs, high-fiving your child’s hand

with each letter (alternating hands). Or

try a spelling bee: Pick a simple word

and have your child do one high-five (or

one pushup) for each letter.

• Sit-ups. Take a ball and lie down

facing each other, feet touching. Sit up

together and pass the ball to your child

at the top of the sit-up, then go back

down. Repeat back and forth for as long

as you can.

• Water balloon walk. Fill a water

balloon and have your child hold it

between his or her knees. Then

challenge the child to walk without

bursting it or dropping it.

• Lunging. Have your child take the

longest step he or she can with one foot,

then go down in a lunge and hold it for a

moment. Then have the child stand up

straight and take a step with the other

foot. Try walking to the car or the park,

lunging all the way.

• Bicycle. Your child lies on the floor,

lifts his or her legs, and moves then in a

circular motion like riding a bicycle.

Ask him or her to say “ha-ha-ha” in time

with the movements. This can be

particularly effective in helping younger

kids head off tantrums.

Praise Appropriately to Teach Children to

Succeed

When your children master something in life, from learning to tie their shoes

to getting a driver’s license, your job as a parent is to show that you admire

their accomplishment.

According to Laurence Steinberg, author of The 10 Basic Principles of Good

Parenting (Simon & Schuster), praising your children teaches them that

learning and achieving are inherently valuable in life.

Think about your own childhood, and you’ll probably remember that some of

your happiest experiences in life have been when you were recognized for

something you had accomplished—and some of your most sour moments

have occurred because no one recognized or seemed to care about what you

had achieved.

It doesn’t really matter what the achievement is, Steinberg says, as long as

you let your children know that you think their achievements are marvelous.

Remember this advice for giving praise that motivates your child to succeed:

• Make your praise as accomplishment-specific as possible. You’ll want to

say, “You’ve done a great job on your science experiment,” and not, “I love it

that you are so good at science.” The second statement links your affection for

the child to the accomplishment—not something you want to do.

• Connect your praise to the effort, not the child’s abilities. You want to

reinforce the idea that hard work pays off, not that your child is a naturally

gifted person who doesn’t have to work hard.

• Praise accomplishments not grades. Your words should reflect that you are

proud of the achievement, not a grade or rating that someone else has given

the work. Tell your child that you’re proud of how well he or she is doing in

science class, for example, not just that he or she received an A.

• Don’t compare achievements. Learning and success shouldn’t be a

competition against siblings or classmates. Emphasize the child’s work

without criticizing anyone else’s.

Dental Health Tips for Kids

The development of good dental hygiene is

important to everyone, but particularly so for kids.

Brushing twice a day is very important and it is

also a good idea to make use of

cetylpyridinium or chlorhexidine before bedtime.

No toothpaste is more effective than another; as

long as they are fluoridated and come with the

ADA seal, they are fine.

You should brush your teeth for about four

minutes, and the idea that enamel will be worn

down by such treatment is a myth.

The direction of your brushing can also be

significant, and the best advice is to angle your

toothbrush at forty five degrees to your gum and

use small circular strokes. You should spend a

little more time brushing your back teeth.

If you suffer from gingivitis, you should have your

teeth professionally cleaned on a regular basis,

consume less sugar; and pay attention to regular

oral hygiene with the use of disclosing dye.

Parent Questions and Answers:

Question: Can we bring others with us to the Thanksgiving

luncheon?

Answer: Yes, however the limit is 4 members per family.

Getting Back to Basics Nutrition does not have to be a terribly

complicated topic. There are some very simple,

back to basic tips that everyone can follow

quite easily in order to get a healthier diet with

better nutrition. Cutting out junk and processed

foods is one very simple tip, as is simply eating

less. If you want to tackle the issue of your

nutrition head-on, you need to get a handle on

the size of your portions and cut back on how

much you are putting onto your plate. If you

are eating out, you can try skipping appetizers

or just eat half of the meal and take the rest

home. You should also cut down on the

number of times you eat out at restaurants

because the portions are much bigger than

when you eat at home and the food tends to be

higher in sodium. You are also more likely to

be tempted to overindulge when eating out,

while at home you can make healthier choices

and plan your meals in advance, as well as

having greater control over the quantity and the

quality of ingredients.

Staff Birthdays: Ms. Magnoria Nov 4th

Take A Look At What We Are Doing…

Infants: The theme for the month of November is “Sensational Senses”. We will be incorporating all the senses into our daily routine. As we explore, our smell, taste, sounds, sight and touch, we will introduce the Banana puppet. We will use words such as squishy, sweet, tasty, and crunchy.

Toddlers: Our focus this month will be based on the five senses for the “Sensational Senses” theme. Our activities will include tasting, touching, smelling different textures of food. We will be using different texture of cloths, wallpaper, and sandpaper. We will also use words and sign language signs to match our theme this month. Our nutritional snack will be jello, and yogurt with fruit.

Twos: We will be discussing the five senses. We will also talk about our body parts including hands, eyes, ears, and legs. We will discuss the colors yellow, orange and brown, the colors of Fall. We will also be making pictures using the colors and make a food collage mat for the holidays. We will sort and count food by colors and sing the song, “Head, shoulders, knees and toes”.

Threes: In November, we will be exploring our Sensational Senses. We will practice our signing for the five senses. We will explore the use of our eyes, ears, nose, mouth and hands. We will also study the care that is needed for our five senses and why.

Fours: This month we will be focusing on our five senses and how important they are. We will have different foods to introduce us to our different tastes. We will also be feeling different textures and comparing and contrasting. We will also enjoy doing Fall activities. We are working on the letters D and E, the colors yellow and red and the sign language word for on.

After-schoolers: We will be working and discussing ways that we can honor local veterans. We will recognize any veterans from our CDS families and staff. Our students will make a collage of different things that they are thankful for and they will write about the things that they are thankful for this year.
