SPORT INDUSTRY
The Gold Coast is fast establishing itself as a globally recognised sporting destination, scaling the ladder of global sports industry rankings and forming a bold appetite for growth and development.
Prior to the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018), the Gold Coast underwent a major transformation with $200 million in new and upgraded sporting infrastructure – enhancing the city’s high performance sport facilities.
The Gold Coast has proven strengths beyond the staging of global events, carving a niche in sport excellence and innovation; from cutting edge research in sport science and leading coaching techniques to innovative product development and manufacturing.
Further bolstering the city’s success as an emerging sport city is the growing number of high-profile sport teams that choose to train on the Gold Coast and the international sporting icons that have made it their base.
Over the last few years, the city has hosted elite teams including Manchester City Football Club, Spanish Villarreal CF Football Club, English Rugby League team and the American, Chinese and Japanese swim teams for pre-event or pre-season training.
An influx of training camps from over 50 of the top athletes across five sports from Oceania also participated in training camps ahead of GC2018. Teams included Canada Athletics, Canada Swimming, New Zealand Bowls, Northern Ireland Athletics,
Northern Ireland Swimming, India Athletics and Singapore Swimming.
Athletes trained at some of the Gold Coast’s elite sporting venues and underwent sport science testing and analysis with Griffith University.
The Gold Coast is pushing for excellence and innovation in health and knowledge related sectors, with research in sports sciences and world-leading specialists in the fields of physiotherapy, physiology, psychology, biochemistry, biomechanics and strength and conditioning.
The city is home to three world-class universities – Bond, Griffith and Southern Cross – each a centre for sport excellence,
offering state-of-the-art testing facilities and clinicians with extensive experience treating national, international and Olympic level athletes.
For the Gold Coast, innovation is prevalent beyond research and it has become a hub for cutting-edge sport businesses; from manufacturers of high-performance sporting apparel, equipment and nutritional products to experts in sports coaching and management.
It is a classic example of industry co-location, providing city-specific opportunities for the industry to collaborate, innovate and grow.

• While casual is the Gold Coast norm, some golf courses have dress codes so check when booking.
• Gentlemen may need a jacket when fine dining, or enjoying a sophisticated evening at a club or restaurant.
• Hinterland areas may be cooler and wetter. Take a jacket and a heavier coat in winter.
• Wear comfortable walking shoes in national parks and farms.
