Robotics: A Tool for Integrating STEM DisciplinesStudent robotic camps can be rich learning experiences for secondary students and still be engaging and fun. Using robotics in the classroom can also deeply engage students in STEM disciplines. After introductory remarks and a short introduction to robots and programming, participants will demonstrate what they have learned and engage in a sharing discussion about what can be learned and taught, how robotics can help make “coding” relevant, improve communication and teamwork skills. We will also cover some of the why’s of using robots in school and after school environments. A friendly closing “competition” will confirm participants’ learning gains.

Breakout Session 2

Business Partner Program The RealSteps Leadership Club mission is to develop relationships with the local business community for the school’s business partner program, as well as enhance leadership & business skills in students that companies and future employers find valuable. This is accomplished by providing business education and soft skills training, to students after school, that employers have unanimously said are needed prior to hiring new employees.

Presenter(s): Julius Guerra / Gethro Monestime / Charles Charlestin, South Tech Academy, Palm Beach CountyPathway(s): SecondaryRoom: Inlet (2nd Floor)

Collaborative Learning Collaborative learning is an educational approach to teaching that involves groups of students working together to solve a problem, complete a task, or create a product. To accomplish this process, the students at South Tech Schools (South Tech Academy High and South Tech Prep Middle) are learning Medical Skills and Anatomy, as well as Physiology and Disease simultaneously. They learn the theory portion in a traditional classroom setting, and then come together to learn and practice the clinical portion in a model clinical hospital setting at the high school, or in the 3-D Computer lab at the middle school otherwise, known as our Z space lab.

Grant Writing as a Method to Build School CultureWhen South Tech formed its Grant Writing Committee in 2015, the intent was to secure sources of funding for classrooms, as well as professional development and overall school improvement. In working towards that goal, we discovered that the act of writing these grants required us to meet with teachers outside our subject area, to visit classrooms, and to learn the different CTE standards. Our writing had the unintended effect of increasing our morale and building stronger relationships between our different programs. Students and teachers alike now approach us with ideas for projects in their classrooms, allowing us to build not only a revenue stream for the school but also a positive school culture founded on respect and admiration. Grant writing has become the best professional development we have undertaken.

The New Smart: What Educators Need to Know...1-2-7 The New Smart refers to the changing landscape in career education today. The best practice involves using the College Scorecard combined with the theory of 1-2-7 to give educators the tools necessary to advise students as they prepare for careers in the 21st Century. A student’s success is enhanced when encouraged to pick a career first, rather than picking a school first.

Our job is to help them make this selection and work on a business plan with goals. The goal of this presentation is to understand the new generation and what they are looking for when choosing their career and being successful. Knowing what is important to them and helping them make that selection for their future, while understanding industry needs and filling those needs, is essential. thursday / january 11 / 2018Keynote Speaker

Jackson DestineThe night his uncle became a victim in a drive-by shooting was a somber wake up call for 12-year old Jackson Destine. At that point, he’d already been kicked out of school once and he had been involved in gang-related activity since the second grade. But in that tragic moment, Jackson committed to heeding his grandmother’s advice: “The only path to success is education,” she told him. And he determined to apply himself full force.

In 7th grade, Jackson began focusing on his grades and started playing sports, and his natural abilities surfaced right away. By the time he entered high school, he was enrolling in honors classes and competing in wresting, football, and track & field. Unfortunately, there was no discretionary income to pay his athletic fees. With the administrator’s approval and unwilling to give up on his outlet, Jackson started his own candy business selling sweets to kids at school to cover his athletic costs. Jackson quickly became a leader on every team he competes with and has set 15 school records. All while maintaining a 4.0 GPA and working another 20-hour/week job with the sole purpose to help his grandmother make ends meet.

Somehow, Jackson also finds time to write, record, and compose music. To him, it’s solace. To his school and community, it’s sheer inspiration. His original raps tell of his past experiences and send a message that young people have choices, even if they are growing up surrounded by crime, violence, and drugs. Jackson wrote and recorded his school’s official song as well as a song for Florida Governor Rick Scott’s Math Nation program. He performed both songs in front of the school board and local media, and was featured in The Palm Beach Post. Learning the impact his music has had on others led Jackson to volunteer with several community programs focused on youth and serve as senior class president. In everything he does, he proves that life’s circumstances do not define a person; grit, perseverance, and determination do.
