RURAL DEVELOPMENTPromoting holistic development of rural communities
KEY PROJECTS Through our Holistic Rural Development Programme we are working to create
sustainable communities in over 114 villages across 6 districts in Jharkhand
reaching over 17,130 households.
Jharkhand accounts for more than 40% of the mineral resources in India but still
suffers from widespread poverty. Approximately 39.1% of its population lives
below the poverty line. The state’s population is also predominantly tribal and they
face high levels of deprivation.
In view of this issue, HDFC Bank’s Holistic Rural Development Programme aims to
bring about sustainable changes in the livelihoods of these communities through
the introduction of improved cropping practices, farm schools, remedial academic
classes, strengthening of VHNCs (village health and nutrition committees) as well
as multiple initiatives to improve the social, physical and institutional infrastructure
of these villages to end cyclic poverty and deprivation.IMPACT INJHARKHAND

EXPANDING INCOME AND REDUCING MIGRATION THROUGH DRIP IRRIGATION
HDFC Bank Parivartan launched its Holistic Rural Development
Programme in Chaibasa with an aim to reduce migration and help
farmers increase their income. The Bank’s survey showed that about 35
per cent households migrated seasonally despite having enough land
holding. The farmers were unable to make farming their sustainable
livelihood option largely due to poor or no irrigation facilities, traditional
agricultural practices, mono cropping system and no access to water
bodies. Some landowners, who were closer to water bodies, were unable
to make the most their presence due to natural land alignment that was
not conducive to fetch water by traditional means. The compounded
effect of poor agriculture practices and low income also caused
malnutrition, anaemia and poor sanitary conditions in the communities.
The Bank focused on motivating the farmers to invest more time in agriculture through convergence. This followed training and capacity
building that spread awareness on usage of modern agricultural equipment. Strategically, the intervention aimed to increase the production
and productivity in agriculture through drip irrigation and better water management. As part of the plan, the Bank first selected the farmlands
that were beside water bodies and motivated the farmers to take on
agriculture as their primary livelihood. The farmers were also trained on
marketing aspects to get better prices for their produce.
Considering women in the tribal regions played an important role in
activities related to income generation, they were also included in the
cycle of growth through formation of Self-Help Groups (SHGs).
The intervention helped increase the irrigated land, develop fallow land
into agriculture land, enhance farmers’ income and reduce migration.
The project covered 15 villages including Paharbhanga, Hathimanda,
Hathnabera, Asura, Sonaposi, Raghunathpur, Kelende, Trilip, Ichhapur,
Bistompur, Mataghut, Tutughutu, Surjabasa, Bingtopang, and Indikuri in
Jhinkpani block.

BETTERING THE LIVES OF TRIBAL GIRLS THROUGH HOCKEY AND FOOTBALL
To perceive sports through the lens of physical fitness only, would be
inadequate. Learning any sport develops one’s personality in ways
beyond imagination. To play any game successfully, the player requires
to develop a host of skills such as determination and focus. These skills
can help a person fight all odds in his or her personal life as well. With
this thought, HDFC Bank Parivartan introduced the tribal girls of Khunti
in Jharkhand to the sport of hockey. An immensely talented pool of
girls in the village had gone unnoticed due to lack of opportunities and
infrastructure.
In order to instil confidence and encourage these girls to step out, the
Bank provided free hockey coaching to the girls of about 16 villages in the
area. The programme laid a special focus on enrolling school dropouts
besides girls regularly attending school.
As the programme continued, the girls’ communication skills improved. They became confident enough to say NO to things they didn’t agree
with. This helped them save themselves from unsafe sexual experiences and build a vision for themselves. The hockey players soon became
role models and influenced their peers and family members while also
making a mark in their community.
Similarly, under Parivartan the tribal girls in Jhinkpani of West Singhbhum
district were introduced to football. The Bank’s programme received
an impressive response from all the target villages. The girls reported a
stark improvement in their communication and intrapersonal skills.
The Bank has also ensured that women coaches are inducted for the
girls, as that would help the players imagine themselves in leadership
positions. The presence of women coaches helps make the girls feel
safe, which also encourages more to join.

SKILL TRAINING AND LIVELIHOOD ENHANCEMENTUpskilling people in their occupations and training them for placement
KEY PROJECTS
EMPOWERING YOUTH TO ALLEVIATE POVERTY
Poverty intensifies because of inadequate opportunities and unequal sharing
of resources among people. Empowering the communities to become more
sustainable is the only solution to resolve the issue. HDFC Bank’s Parivartan
identifies youth from the community who can be trained under its skill development
programme. These youngsters are given rigorous training on several skill-sets. The
skill-training programme is targeted to young adults from families who are living
below the poverty line. Developing their skills enables them to break the inter-
generational poverty cycle.
SKILLING WOMEN THROUGH SUSTAINABLE LIVELIHOOD INITIATIVE
As part of the Sustainable Livelihood Initiative, Parivartan has imparted skill training
to thousands of women in Jharkhand.
SKILLING UNDERPRIVILEGED YOUTH FROM REMOTE RURAL AREAS OF
JHARKHAND
Parivartan has been working to develop an autonomous ITI and ANM Nursing model for creating market-led, medium-term skill development
courses. These will enable recognised vocational accreditation and employment for the underprivileged and best-in-class vocational
education to the poor. The project is targeted to serve youth typically from affirmative action sections including SC, ST, OBC and other
youngsters hailing from marginalised backgrounds. Over 720 youths are set to benefit because of the initiative, which would have a positive
impact on over 3,000 families.

HONING FARMERS THROUGH FARMERS FIELD SCHOOL
Among the primary reasons for farmers to get distressed is low farm output due to
lack of technology and subsequent dwindling income from it. Both the issues are
a direct result of inadequate knowledge about technology, production and market.
To address these key components, HDFC Bank Parivartan facilitated setting up of
a Farmers Field School (FFS) in 61 locations of Ranchi, Ramgarh, Dumka, Khunti
and Chaibasa in Jharkhand.
FFS is an activity-based non-formal education activity that empowers farmers to
solve problems on their own based on demonstrations of new technology, organic
inputs and improved agri practices. FFS focuses on developing GAP – Good
Agriculture Practices for sustained agro-based livelihood. Given the FFS is well
updated with new agricultural developments, the farmers can also avail the facility
for improving their marketing, thus improving income.
The programme focuses on enhancing the farmers’ skill along with agriculture
knowledge. Integrated Pest Management, Integrated Soil Nutrient Management,
production process of bio fertilisers, bio pesticides etc are among the several
topics covered under the training programme.
The farmers are able to learn new and sustainable techniques with fellow farmers that enables knowledge sharing and builds confidence in scaling up.
The initiative has not only helped farmers grow further but has also developed a
symbiotic relationship between them and the ecology as they now promote and
exercise sustainable agriculture practices.
Under Parivartan, the FFS has covered over 3,000 farmers.

MOTIVATING TRIBAL GIRLS THROUGH SPORTSLocation: Jhinkpani block, West Singhbhum district
Beneficiaries: 239 girl students
The challenge: Villages in the Jhinkpani block have agri-based economies but suffer from neglect of farm lands due to poor or no knowledge of multiple cropping. This leads to seasonal migration and families with little or no education have their children working at an early age. The area being surrounded by mines, the adolescents of the community would seek daily wage jobs at brick kiln sites, stone crusher units, etc.
The engagement: The Bank with its partner NGO NEEDS identified that the tribal communities in the area were close to traditional sports activities. The Ho community in particular is inclined towards archery. Hoping to leverage this, a 15-day Archery Camp was held in July 2018. A total of 239 adolescent girls from 11 to 18 years from 15 villages were identified and 74 girls were selected for the camp.
Since then, the teachers have reported increased attendance by the girls following the camp. Their story has also served as an inspiration for other girls, who have shown interest in archery and other sports. In fact, six girls have been selected by the West Singhbhum Archery for State Archery Championship.
A positive step towards ushering in Parivartan.

PROMOTING THE CAUSE OF CLEANLINESS
Location: Usra village, Ramgarh district in Jharkhand
Beneficiaries: Residents of Usra and 14 other villages
The challenge: Waste management is a pressing concern, not just in our country but across the world. There is a dire lack of awareness on responsible waste management practices and the harmful effects of plastic use. As a result there is widespread environmental degradation, the effect of which is felt on human and animal life. The residents of Ramgarh district found themselves in a similar situation, and felt the need to bring about a sustainable change.
Our intervention: The Bank partnered with KGVK, Ranchi and came up with the unique concept of Plastic Do Paudha Lo (Give plastic, take a sapling) to generate awareness and motivate people to take the driver’s seat in protecting the environment. The drive was initiated at Panchayat Usra in Ramgarh. A ‘Prabhat Pheri’ was organised where more than 220 students, teachers and villagers participated. A rangoli-making competition was also organised for students to encourage participation.
The aim was to get the residents to bring in their used plastic bags. These were collected and the participants were given fruit saplings in exchange. Over 2,000 mango saplings were distributed in the community. An orientation session was also held to further inform the residents of the benefits of waste management and reduced use of plastic.
The drive is now gaining momentum, with sensitisation events held in all the 14 villages of Ramgarh district under Bank’s Holistic Rural Development Programme.
