What are your Main Points?

•Organization – Easy to follow flow of information

•Content – Relationship among points

•Keep it Simple – Synthesize the information

•Presentation – Show vs. Tell• Sharing a Story

Layout•Visual presentation: Text provides support

•20% text, 40% graphics and 40% empty space

•Sketch it First:◦ The title will appear across the top. ◦ Segment areas for information ◦ Easy to follow flow (e.g. columns or rows)◦ Size – 3’ x 4’ on power point slide or 2 Mat boards (app. 5’x3’)

Text•Brevity is the companion of clarity

• hybridized APA format for referencing – to save space!

•Use active voice• “It can be demonstrated” → “The data demonstrate”

•Legible from 6 feet away

•Size of font: Titles 54-80, subtitles 40-54 , Text 32+

•Title – readable from a long distance• Include name – identifies you (Author)

•Colours- contrast (e.g. black text on white background; white text on colour background).

Illustrations•Use self-explanatory graphics

◦ 3 – 5 Tables and / or figures◦ # and title required

•Use brief supporting text where necessary

•Graphic materials should be visible easily from a minimum distance of 6 feet

•Restrained use of colours for emphasis is valuable (2 - 3); do not overuse

Poster in Windows Office 2010

•Open Power Point•Design→ Pg Set Up → Width (48”), Height (36”) and Landscape•Choose background•Insert Tab → Text Box•Using your pre-lab assignment, start to add text to the slide•There are several online sources to help you with the layout and look of the poster

•The key is to keep your topic as narrow as possible•Save for future editing

Full Page using ‘Tiler’• Tiler is a computer program that can be used to scale and print

PDF files on multiple pages to create an inexpensive poster

To Print:

ALWAYS CHANGE TO SINGLE SIDED

Pages are always going to have a white strip, don’t cut before thinking it through (see next slide)

Consider printing a black and white practice trial before spending money on color copies

• Print tiled (8.5 x 11 inches)

• Price- $.40/page color; $.10/pg black & white – check for current pricing!

• E.g. 16 sheets of 8.5” x 11” = 3’ x 4’• 16 sheets in color = $6.40
