KUTZTOWN UNIVERSITY FOUNDATION REPORT ON PHILANTHROPY 1

We’re here for KU—as were many of you in 2013–14. Thank you!

From the Executive Director

Thanks to you and 13,290 other donors,

Setting the Stage, the Campaign for Kutztown

University has come to a successful close,

with a grand total of $15.7 million raised.

The entire KU community should be proud,

since this accomplish ment represents not only the achievement

of the University’s near-term fundraising goals, but also directly

contributes to fulfilling KU’s aspirations for the future. KU will

celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2016, and this campaign was

designed to provide resources to build upon the past—and prepare

for the future.

The generosity of so many devoted alumni, parents, faculty and staff,

and friends of the University, all willing to make a philanthropic

investment in KU, helped Setting the Stage exceed all expectations.

We of the KU Foundation & Alumni Relations office wish to express

our gratitude to you throughout this annual report. Here, you

can read about the impact of the campaign, learn more about our

exceptional students, reflect upon the legacy of Dr. F. Javier Cevallos,

and discover our plans for the future of the KU Foundation.

This is just the beginning. We sincerely hope you will stay with

us on this journey, and continue to strengthen KU in the years

to come. And we hope that you will join us for the University’s

sesquicentennial celebrations in 2015-16.

Thank you for playing such an integral part in Setting the Stage.

Tracey L. Thompson

Executive Director

Kutztown University Foundation & Alumni Relations

From the President of the Board

At this time last year, we were preparing for

the final stretch of our capital campaign,

close to its fundraising goal of $15 million,

thanks to donors like you. The expansion

and renovation of Schaeffer Auditorium was

completed on time, transforming it into a truly beautiful facility. And

we had issued a challenge to KU alumni, parents and friends to help

us close out the campaign with another strong year.

The response was resoundingly positive. Your support helped us

close the year with nearly 8,000 gifts—in cash and stock, in-kind

donations and 1,436 new pledges. Above that, 21 new scholarships

have been established and an annuity was received, all contributing

to the further enhancement of Kutztown University and building a

stronger, more robust culture of philanthropy and engagement.

The successful completion of Setting the Stage represents a profound

victory for Kutztown University, allowing us to fulfill KU’s essential

promise of providing an excellent and accessible education for every

student admitted, regardless of economic background.

Reaching the $15.7-million mark shows the resolve of those who

believe deeply in KU. Whether you gave $25 or $25,000, more than

13,000 of you stepped forward with convincing support. As an

alumnus and as president of the Foundation’s Board of Directors,

I want to express my gratitude to all who gave so generously.

Report of the Chief Financial Offi cer

With our capital campaign’s successful

conclusion, the Foundation experienced

significant growth and the strengthening of our

ability to support Kutztown University and its

students during fiscal year 2013–14.

In addition to revenues of $2.4 million generated by fundraising

activities, the Foundation achieved investment earnings in excess of

$2.9 million, a rate of return of 15.5%. This performance fueled the

growth of our total endowment from $17.6 to $20.7 million during the

fiscal year. We also received $663,000 in new endowment gifts.

For FY 2013–14, we continued our conservative endowment spending

policy to bolster growth and protect the endowment’s ability to

preserve intergenerational equity for future students. However, we will

be increasing our spending rate from 3 to 3.25% for FY 2014-15. This

modest increase, in combination with the growth in investment values,

will provide an additional $63,000 in scholarships in the coming

academic year.

The University’s continuing support and investment in the Foundation

enables us to continue our practice of not assessing any administrative

fees on gifts received.

While earning total revenues of nearly $13.4 million is a successful

year, it is only half of our story. Direct support provided by the

Foundation to the University was $2,149,000, $823,000 of which was in

scholarships. Notwithstanding the nearly $4.8 million committed to

the University for Schaeffer Auditorium, this represents an increase of

$263,000 in direct support. Scholarships alone increased by $137,000.

I thank you for your continuing support of Kutztown University and I

look forward to another year of financial growth.

…But they tell the story of hard work and dedication.

From the Director of Development & Alumni Relations

For the past three years, it has been my

honor to serve as the Foundation’s Director

of Alumni Relations. With the Board of

Directors of the Alumni Association and

many alumni volunteers, we have built stronger and more enduring

connections between the University and its alumni. This progress

has been encouraging, and we continue to further establish valuable,

meaningful partnerships among all of the KU community.

This past year, we held more than 50 events and engaged over

50,000 alumni with Alumni Networking Series events in Reading,

Philadelphia, Orlando, Tampa and New York City. Homecoming

2013 saw our highest attendance ever, with more than 2,500 alumni

visiting campus to reconnect with friends and faculty members.

And of course, we had our home football tailgates, a great autumn

tradition. Some wonderful photos from these events are included in

this report

Alumni stay engaged with Kutztown University in many different

ways: by volunteering to help at Homecoming, hosting events, or

serving as mentors; working with the Alumni Association to offer

new and better benefits to all KU alumni; or attending events and

serving as advocates of KU within their communities. All these

activities strengthen KU and contribute to the culture of engagement

and philanthropy that we have built in the past few years.

For the sesquicentennial in 2016, we plan to do even more. We will

continue to expand and improve our Alumni Networking Series and

our offering of alumni benefits.

Thank you to all who have made this year so successful. I look

forward to seeing you on campus or at an event—and having you join

me in helping to nurture and strengthen the KU community.

6 KUTZTOWN UNIVERSITY FOUNDATION REPORT ON PHILANTHROPY

Involvement transforms KU.We all made a difference to Kutztown University during 2013-2014.

Time, educational leadership, monetary gifts, energy—all mattered.

Through hard work and donations, many things were made possible:

renovations, scholarships, faculty-led research and innovations in

curricula.

This year, success could be seen.Setting the Stage allowed us to begin our year with a ribbon-cutting

in September at the newly renovated Schaeffer Auditorium, where

performers took the stage in celebration, as seen on our cover.

Improvements were made at the Sharadin Arts Building, as well.

The Foundation’s 5-year-campaign results were heartening, reaching

105% of goal under the volunteer leadership of campaign co-chairs

Bill Ribble ’73 and Peter Knight, bringing in:

• $5.3 million for scholarships

• $3.2 million toward Schaeffer Auditorium renovations

• $276,000 for Sharadin Arts Building improvements

• $130,000 for PA German Cultural Heritage Center

• $6.8 million in restricted and unrestricted gifts to enhance KU

Our determination and willingness to reach out showed convincingly

in these results.

The Foundation’s Board—at full throttleAs our Board members marked 100% giving participation, they

worked with alumni, volunteers and Foundation staff to cultivate

relationships with donors.

The Board’s full participation in both donations and energy means

they’re genuinely involved leaders, planning for KU’s ever-brighter

future. Your pledges help make those plans happen—for Kutztown

University and for those who depend on and care about its quality.

One payoff: relationships and fun at HomecomingLast fall, over 2,500 alumni attended Homecoming Weekend, with

events including a concert by alumnus Rick Vito and the Lucky

Devils, opened by alumnus Mark Wayne Glasmire ’77. Planning and

hard work made it an exciting time, with tailgates, games, the 5th

Quarter Party and more, all keeping KU alumni engaged with the

University.

Events and alumni outreach continued all year long.Alumni Networking Series events were held in New York and

Philadelphia, with plans made to visit many other areas where

alumni are found. There were also several enthusiastically received

tailgates during the fall season and one post-game reception for the

Graduate Organization of Bands and band families.

The Ladies Holiday Tea Scholarship event in December saw Dr.

Cevallos and Foundation staffers serving handsomely in tuxedos

and white gloves. The Foundation Annual Chili Cook-Off, building

community and participation in the Annual Fund by faculty and

staff, was won for the second time by our own Cheryl Swavely,

Alumni Events Manager.

The Gathering of Gratitude in March 2014 inspired all, as over

120 philanthropic donors met 90 extremely grateful scholarship

recipients.

We hosted alumni at sports events—a Flyers hockey game and a

Phillies spring training game—along with a reception for speaker

Dan Savage, luncheons and dinners at the President’s home and, of

course, the Spring Ladies Tea.

The Annual Fund campaignWe wrapped up FY14 with over $2.4 million raised, and contributions

from Foundation Board members represented 6% of the total year’s

giving. On page 5 of this report you will find an overview of what this

success enabled the Foundation to do for programs in academics and

athletics, operations which modernize our campus for sustainability,

grants for faculty-proposed programs, scholarships and Foundation

events that make KU a vital, interesting place to learn and return.

Fond farewells to Dr. CervallosKU trustees, administrators, faculty, staff, and other friends and

colleagues attended a special May reception to say good-bye to

departing KU President Dr. F. Javier Cevallos and his family. Through

the Dr. Cevallos Legacy of Service appeal, the Foundation raised more

than $355,000 to honor his 12 years of devoted service to Kutztown

University.

Endings and new beginnings at the FoundationThe Foundation Board said good-bye to two long-serving members

this year—Charlie Perkins ’68 and Bill Ribble ’73. Both are passionate

KU alumni as well as philanthropists, leaders and extraordinary

volunteers. Charlie and Bill each served the Foundation Board for

more than ten years, generously supported many programs and

funds, and established endowed scholarships. We are grateful for

their selfless service. The Board also welcomed four new members:

Jackie Jaindl, Dr. Will Rapp, Bob Landis and Carolina Martinez.

Ready for the next stage! We thank every donor listed in this annual report. Each contributed

to the success and vitality of the Foundation and thus, the University.

Participation by alumni and friends like you demonstrates

confidence in KU and shines a spotlight on the value of the

educational experience it provides. As we prepare to celebrate our

sesquicentennial, we know you stand ready to help. Your dedication

to the University has put us into the ranks of sought-after schools by

increasing that value.

The transformations planned will not be change for the sake of change, but to put the best resources in faculty and student hands.

Your involvement enables the improvements that will help move our students, our programs and our University ahead, during our sesquicentennial year.

Students Who InspireLuis Vanderhorst ‘15

I am a senior at Kutztown University, aspiring

to become an elementary educator, grades

4–8, in contents of Math and Social Studies. As a Kutztown University

undergraduate, I have greatly benefited from the wealth of resources

that the University provides.

Although this past three years as a first-generation college student

have been challenging, attending KU has been one of the best

decisions I have ever made. Kutztown has empowered me to become

a lifelong learner and a facilitator for change, all thanks to the

University’s prestigious teaching program and the many

opportunities for growth that it provides.

Therefore, I am thankful for the financial support I have received

from the Brenda C. Zellner Endowed Scholarship. I am grateful for

this generous contribution to my academic success, as it has been an

acknowledgement that my persistent efforts are for the betterment of

my future students.

In addition, I am honored to be Kutztown’s representative for TEACH,

a mentoring program hosted by National State Teachers of the

Year in conjunction with PASSHE, to further my aspirations. I also

enjoy serving as an active E-board member of several on-campus

organizations.

I have the privilege of being the recipient of the 2013-2014 Who’s Who

Among American Colleges and Universities award. There is no better

reason for me to be more humbled and grateful to represent Kutztown

University through my leadership involvement.

KUTZTOWN UNIVERSITY FOUNDATION REPORT ON PHILANTHROPY 13

Students Who InspireLetecia Garcia ‘15As a senior at Kutztown University, I’m truly

excited about my opportunities—while I’m

here and for my future. So many things

make me proud to be a KU student!

The University’s courses are outstanding for what I need to

learn in criminal justice and my chosen field, developmental

psychopathology, in which I intend to get my Ph.D. And the award-

winning campus is enduringly beautiful all four seasons of the year.

My aim is to work for the Federal Bureau of Prisons in a super-max

prison as a supervising psychologist. I chose a double major in

Psychology and Criminal Justice, with a minor in Biology. I truly

want to help people—and have from an early age—so, while inmates

serve their sentences, I would like to develop programs that help

them leave better off, not worse than they came in. We pay more than

$36,000 a year for each inmate, and they need to learn a different way

to be, to be able to better live in society when they’re released.

My internship advisor helped find the setting I wanted—an internship

in Berks County Prison. My classes had helped prepare me for a

prison setting, taught me how to deal with all kinds of people and

gave me an understanding of prison structure and prisoner needs.

Through my life experiences, I’ve found that educating myself is a

good way to get through difficult situations. What you can fathom the

least, you study the most. I couldn’t understand why someone would

be able to hurt other people, so I pursued that question.

I’m fortunate right now to have the Jaymie B. Creitz Scholarship,

renewed annually. It’s based on past work with animal welfare and

rights at a number of organizations. I received it because I got an

award in high school from peta2, the youth division of PETA, and

worked with our principal to draft prohibitions against events that

exploited and profited from animal use.

For me, there’s no better place to get my education and base my

learning experience than Kutztown University!
