Creating Events that Engage
Communities
Rebecca Patterson Director, Good Life, Good Death, Good Grief
An alliance of individuals and
organisations working to create more open
and supportive attitudes and
behaviours relating to death, dying and bereavement in
Scotland.
What do we mean by ‘community’?
Different groups and communities have different strengths, weaknesses, problems and priorities relating to death, dying and bereavement – what might work for one community may be completely inappropriate for another.
Creating engaging events
•What am I trying to achieve? •Who am I trying to reach? •How can I encourage people to want to engage? •What resources might work? •Is there anything already out there I can join in with?
What are you trying to achieve?
Football Fans
School Children
Volunteer Befrienders
Successful events are usually grounded in (and preferably organised by) communities themselves.
Who are you trying to reach?
How do you encourage people to want to come?

What resources might help?
People are different. What engages some people won’t interest others.
