Professor Michael Nilsson MD, PhD, FAFRM (RACP)

Professor Michael Nilsson is the Executive Director of the Hunter Medical Research Institute, Newcastle, Burges Professor of Medical Science at the University of Newcastle and Senior Staff Specialist in Rehabilitation Medicine within Hunter New England Health. His research focuses mainly on mechanisms underpinning neuroprotection, brain plasticity and neural repair with special emphasis on the functions of glial cells and stress-related mechanisms. He is also exploring the effects of growth factors and enriched environment on stroke recovery in both animal models and clinical trials.

Professor Nilsson has initiated projects aimed at a deeper understanding of the outcome and impact of translational research. He has implemented new models of treatment in Stroke, traumatic brain injury and Parkinson rehabilitation.

Working at the forefront of translational and interdisciplinary research, Professor Nilsson has, through his entrepreneurial skills, developed business projects and strong links with industrial partners. He is the founder of NeuroOptima, a leading evidence-based rehabilitation enterprise in Sweden and Spain, offering programs based on the principles of multimodal stimulation in an enriched environment in combination with intensive task-specific training and education.

Together with senior colleagues, Professor Nilsson recently founded the Centre for Innovative Technologies in Rehabilitation Settings (CITRS) focusing on the development of interdisciplinary solutions that underpins and support individualised rehabilitation in the home settings, residential and aged care environments, and rehabilitation centers,

promoting health resilience and patient recovery.

Brenda Booth - Stroke Survivor Brenda is a Stroke survivor; her Stroke occurred in 2001, when she was 41 years old. A left internal carotid artery dissection (tear) caused a left middle cerebral artery stroke. Her speech, sight and arm movement were initially affected.

In 2010 Brenda was diagnosed as having carotid and intracranial Fibromuscular Dysplasia (FMD) which was determined to be the underlying cause of her Stroke. FMD has resulted in ongoing fluctuating cerebral flow related symptoms.

Brenda feels fortunate that she does not have any residual physical disability, but contends with the non-visible issues related to her stroke and FMD, such as variable issues with speech, fatigue, balance, coordination and memory.

Brenda is a Registered Nurse, she has worked both in the public and private hospital sector. From 1991 until 2016 Brenda worked as a Case Manager with the NSW Government Disability Service.

Following her Stroke she returned to work part time. In April 2016 Brenda commenced work with the National Disability Agency as an NDIS planner.. Brenda is frequently asked to speak about her stroke experience at forums, educational and community events. Brenda has provided Stroke consumer input at a local, state and national level
