Joint Replacement CenterBeaufort Memorial’s new Joint Replacement Center — recognized as a Blue Distinction Center for hip and knee replacement — is an example of combining evidence-based medicine with a well-designed patient experience. Not only is our comprehensive care model a refreshing alternative to typical joint surgery experiences, the model’s highly effective clinical outcomes are also setting new standards for patient recovery.

The journey to better joint health starts with an orthopaedic care coordinator. This personal concierge within the Joint Replacement Center ensures “guests” are well informed and addresses questions promptly so the entire surgical experience is well coordinated from start to finish.

Within the Joint Replacement Center’s hotel-like environment guests join a class, are personally guided to their rooms, and can choose to rehabilitate in their own clothing after surgery.

The two-to-three-day post-surgical recovery period features walks to center-based locations and class fellowship through group games and exercise sessions. The experience culminates with a special class send-off dinner and a carefully planned six-to-12-month follow-up care program.

Beyond making rehabilitation more enjoyable, we revamped protocols to enhance safety and outcomes. Every aspect of the process was evaluated and updated to incorporate best practices followed by leading hospitals. And, each member of our newly established Joint Replacement Center team is trained in and dedicated to orthopaedic patient care.

While the program is still young, data demonstrating clinical efficacy is already mounting. Guests of the Joint Replacement Center are able to walk sooner and further, require less pain medication, and spend fewer days in the hospital.

When I accepted the position of President and CEO of Beaufort Memorial Hospital seven years ago, I knew how fortunate I was to be moving to such a beautiful area.

But I quickly learned it’s the people as much as the place who make Beaufort so exceptional. Bound by a shared appreciation of the area’s distinctive culture, history and landscape, residents of this community have come together to cultivate a quality of life most people can only dream of.

Living well starts with good health. To that end, Beaufort Memorial plays a critical role in providing residents with the kind of healthcare services that can help them live active, productive lives. Despite the many changes in the healthcare industry, we have continued to expand our pool of providers and enhance our facilities and services to meet the needs of our community while positioning our healthcare system for the future.

For example, we understand the importance of making sure people in our area have access to the primary care physicians and specialists they need. Our physician practice network has undergone significant growth in the last year, as have several centers of excellence that will help to define Beaufort Memorial as a destination for advanced care in certain clinical areas.

While acute care will always be core to our mission, we know that wellness, prevention and rehabilitation efforts — so critical in controlling healthcare costs and outcomes — are vital. We’re happy to count community programs like our new LifeFit Wellness Center and Transitional Care Program for COPD patients among those new initiatives that address this need.

You’ve entrusted your health to us, and we take that responsibility very seriously. Every decision we make, from physician recruitment to capital improvements to program development, is designed to provide you with every opportunity and resource to live your best life. I hope you’ll enjoy this review of recent initiatives and improvements we’ve made over the last year, and our future plans to help keep you healthy, happy and living well in this wonderful community we call home.

Rick ToomeyPresident and CEOBeaufort Memorial Hospital

Creating Centers of ExcellenceAs the area’s only not-for-profit healthcare provider, Beaufort Memorial is uniquely positioned to reinvest revenues within the system to continually advance patient care. Beyond ensuring quality healthcare services, we’re establishing centers of excellence in three key areas to meet the particular needs of our community. It’s a notable achievement that the three centers are quickly earning recognition as best-in-class programs by national accrediting organizations.

Breast Health ProgramBreast health is a high priority for all women. Beaufort Memorial created the Women’s Imaging Center to bring local women advanced breast care with a personal, comforting approach. Designed with the healing arts in mind, the 4,100-square-foot facility provides fast access to highly accurate diagnostics and leading imaging technology, including 3-D mammography, or tomosynthesis, which enhances visibility and reduces call-backs and unnecessary biopsies. The result is a process that speeds diagnoses, and can, in many cases, detect cancer when it is most treatable.

The center’s nurse navigator works closely with patients and guides them through diagnostic testing and treatment plans that can involve multiple healthcare providers, surgeons and oncologists. The guided approach not only manages expectations, but also greatly reduces anxiety during a highly vulnerable time.

A dedicated, onsite radiologist reviews mammograms and provides patients with findings before they leave the center. That same-day peace of mind is also available at Beaufort Memorial Bluffton Medical Services.

Should a mammogram reveal an abnormality, additional testing can be performed on the spot. What’s more, the center has a surgeon available four days a week to examine patients who require a breast biopsy. It’s vital access that can establish a diagnosis within days rather than weeks.

The center’s new program for women at high risk for breast cancer offers close medical monitoring and the reassurance it brings.

While currently pursuing national accreditation, the Women’s Imaging Center has already earned the coveted designation of Breast Imaging Center of Excellence for meeting the radiology profession’s highest standards of care.

Minimally Invasive SurgeryThanks to technological advances, minimally invasive surgery has become the new standard in surgical care. Beaufort Memorial has invested heavily over the past few years in the da Vinci Surgical System to put this pioneering surgical technology to work for people throughout the community.

Using the robotic platform, surgeons can perform complex operations, including full and partial knee replacement, hysterectomy and nephrectomy, through incisions no larger than an inch. For many patients, the low-impact approach reduces the four-to-five-day hospital stay of traditional surgery to a one-day surgery that commonly allows patients to recover in the comfort of home.

Improvements in the da Vinci Surgical System have enhanced surgical precision, control and stability, expanding the scope of minimally invasive surgeries that now can be performed robotically. In 2013, Beaufort Memorial added prostate cancer surgery to its list of minimally invasive procedures, making it the only healthcare provider in Beaufort County to offer robot-assisted prostatectomy. Our recent investment in next-generation da Vinci technology has also meant the addition of single-site hysterectomy and gallbladder surgery, minimizing scarring and maximizing recovery for patients undergoing these common procedures.

We’ve always known good health means more than accessing a hospital for acute care. It means developing a personal relationship with a primary care physician and support team to manage everyday health, and ready access to a range of specialists should specific conditions warrant that level of care.

A vital region like ours demands continuous cultivation of providers to meet changing healthcare needs. That’s why we embarked on a strategic initiative to bring more physician practices into our network, Beaufort Memorial Physician Partners.

Just last year, more than two dozen doctors, physician assistants and nurse practitioners joined Beaufort Memorial Physician Partners. We opened a new 8,500-square-foot facility for Lady’s Island Internal Medicine, launched our own OB-GYN practice, and welcomed the multispecialty Lowcountry Medical Group to our provider team.

To better serve residents south of the Broad, we have continued to expand our offerings at Bluffton Medical Services. In addition to primary care physicians, orthopaedists, cardiologists and a number of other specialists, several surgeons now see patients for consultations and post-surgery follow-ups in Bluffton’s Westbury Park location.

Our newest practices include:Beaufort Memorial Lady’s Island Internal Medicine

Three board-certified internists and two physician assistants provide adult medical care including diagnosis,

treatment and case management. Same-day appointments and onsite laboratory services also are available.

Beaufort Memorial Obstetrics & Gynecology Specialists

Four board-certified OB-GYNs offer the latest in women’s health care, from prenatal and postnatal

care to menopause management. Services include minimally invasive surgery for hysterectomies, urinary incontinence and pelvic prolapse, as well as laboratory testing, and 3-D and 4-D ultrasound.

Beaufort Memorial Lowcountry Medical Group

This multispecialty practice includes four internal and family medicine physicians, two physician

assistants, two nurse practitioners and eight specialists in gastroenterology, oncology, neurology, cardiology, gynecology and orthopaedics. Onsite imaging and lab services also are available.

Sharing Health and WellnessBeaufort Memorial has long championed prevention and wellness in its mission to improve the health of the community. Rather than simply treating people when they are sick, we’ve developed innovative programs to prevent illness and chronic disease, helping you live a fuller, healthier life every day.

The cornerstone of our initiative to sustain good health and well-being is LifeFit Wellness Services. In 2013, we relocated and expanded the LifeFit Wellness Center — the area’s only medically supervised, full-service exercise facility — to meet the growing demand for preventive care.

Located on the first floor of the new four-story Beaufort Memorial Medical and Administrative Center, the 17,000-square-foot facility features the latest strength training and cardiovascular workout equipment, along with a full schedule of group exercise classes. The center also offers cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation, diabetes care, massage therapy and an array of support groups.

Our commitment to your health is not limited to the hospital campus. We recognize the need to reach you where you live, work and play. As part of LifeFit’s Community Health Improvement Program, we send our physicians and staff to health fairs, hospital-sponsored classes and lectures, civic clubs, churches and schools to share helpful information on how to improve your health, wellness and longevity.

One of the program’s most popular outreach services is the LifeFit Mobile Wellness Unit, a 40-foot medical van that travels throughout Beaufort, Hampton and Jasper counties offering free or low-cost health screenings to residents. You’re likely to find LifeFit right around the corner.

Screenings and SupportBeaufort Memorial’s traveling LifeFit Mobile Wellness Unit offers a range of vital screenings, from blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetic checks to clinical breast, prostate and skin cancer exams. Through local support groups, we help people with challenging illnesses such as breast cancer and stroke.

Educational EventsWe seek opportunities for our physicians and staff to share their healthcare expertise and experience with the community. Fun events like Dance for Your Health, Back in Action and The Man Plan engage attendees and provide helpful tips and tools for living well. Classes for growing families help welcome babies into the world safely and securely.

Caring for Our YoungestFor generations, mothers-to-be in our community have taken comfort knowing they could give birth in their hometown hospital. Beaufort Memorial continues to deliver on its promise to provide a safe, warm environment where you can welcome your baby into the world, and to provide support services to care for your children as they grow.

In 2013, Beaufort Memorial embarked on an ambitious plan to create its own OB-GYN practice and elevate its birthing services to meet the changing needs of today’s families.

In 2013, Beaufort Memorial embarked on an ambitious plan to create its own OB-GYN practice and elevate its birthing services to meet the changing needs of today’s families.

Four physicians with 70 years of combined experience were recruited for the new Beaufort Memorial Obstetrics & Gynecology Specialists located in a beautifully renovated suite at the Beaufort Medical Plaza. In addition to their impressive clinical credentials, all four doctors are well known for their caring, compassion and accessibility. Expectant mothers and other women interested in becoming patients of the practice were invited to schedule free “meet & greet” appointments to get to know the doctors.

As part of our initiative to enhance maternity services, we equipped the new OB-GYN office with a state-of-the-art ultrasound featuring 3-D and 4-D capabilities. The scanner creates remarkable three-dimensional images and can capture video of babies while still in the womb.

Beaufort Memorial also brought on board an ultrasound sonographer specially trained in fetal echocardiography. This new level of expertise can help detect a fetal heart abnormality before birth, allowing for faster, fully informed medical or surgical intervention once the baby is born.

Coupled with the establishment of our new OB-GYN practice is our strategy to upgrade the Beaufort Memorial Birthing Center. An outside expert in women’s services has been working to assess the maternity program from top to bottom, conducting focus groups with women and healthcare providers to identify their priorities, needs and preferences for the center’s obstetric services.

Based on this research, several upgrades for the Birthing Center are being considered. Those include cosmetic updates, comfortable in-room furnishings for spouses or family members and other amenities designed to provide modern conveniences to patients and their families.

At HealthLink for Children — Beaufort Memorial’s outpatient centers in Beaufort and Bluffton that specialize in children’s rehabilitation — a team of experts works together to ensure the best possible outcomes for each young patient. Physical, occupational and speech therapists join forces with parent and child to promote and celebrate rehabilitative successes.

Girls Night Out

Measuring Community ImpactFrom the day we opened our doors in 1944, we at Beaufort Memorial have remained firmly anchored to our roots — the people we serve. We’ve broadened core medical services and traveled into the community to help residents in many ways, from supplying food from our cafeteria to Meals on Wheels to offering a summer day camp for children with asthma.

Members of our staff participate in countywide coalitions addressing quality of life issues and lend their expertise to critical health-related causes such as obesity, chronic disease, prenatal care and aging. They are also committed to serving others through a number of charitable organizations and programs that help improve and change lives.

As one of the largest employers in Beaufort County, Beaufort Memorial has an extensive economic footprint within the region. We’re proud to positively affect lives throughout our community.

Dance instructor Armando Aseneta, owner of Fred Astaire Dance Studio, led classes at last year’s event.

“The great thing about dancing is you don’t even realize you’re exercising,” he said.

The popular event started toes to tapping and featured health screenings, seminars and advice, plus dance classes and performances by local groups like the Sun City Cloggers (top) and the Beaufortettes.

Women of all ages grabbed a friend — or a group of friends — and came from north, south, east and west to the Beaufort Memorial Medical and Administrative Center for a great party at Girls Night Out last year. The event offered the several hundred guests present plenty of practical, easy-to-use tips for getting and staying healthy.

At the event, gynecologist Patricia Thompson, MD, and Amy Hane, nurse navigator at Beaufort Memorial’s Women’s Imaging Center, answered women’s health questions, while Robert Vyge, MD, of Lady’s Island Internal Medicine chatted with an attendee about the importance to good health of maintaining an active lifestyle.

Girls Night Out is a free annual wellness program just for women. The fun night out includes music, food, games and prizes, and women can learn strategies to improve their health.

Each February in celebration of American Heart Month, Beaufort Memorial hosts Dance for Your Health, a wellness event that gets people on their feet and dancing toward better health.

Defining SuccessWhat’s next for a community healthcare system 70 years strong? A vision and mission that position us for the next era of service. Long guided by a commitment to improving the health of the community, Beaufort Memorial stands ready to meet the challenges of a new age in healthcare by focusing on key areas that are central to delivering on this commitment.

Healthcare Quality Our enduring performance as an exceptional community healthcare provider has cultivated an infrastructure that easily supports taking care to the next level. In addition to meeting the fundamental healthcare needs of our area, we’re developing world-class experiences in areas that address specific health conditions commonly experienced by those in our community. For each area — minimally invasive surgery, joint replacement and breast health — we’re creating a center of excellence by assessing and improving operations, facilities and patient experiences. These centers will also serve as guideposts for improving other clinical services within our ever-growing healthcare system.

Physician RelationshipsA person’s ability to develop a positive, ongoing relationship with a physician is one key to maintaining good health. That’s why Beaufort Memorial is committed to bringing the best physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and support teams to practice throughout the area. We also recognize the importance of helping patients successfully navigate physician offices and other healthcare resources, such as diagnostics, outpatient surgery and inpatient care. We’re continuously refining our operational and service processes to ensure that accessible care is synonymous with meaningful care.

Growing Core ServicesProviding advanced cardiac and cancer care remains among our highest priorities. To reduce the risk of death by heart attack, we now offer primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) onsite for patients who suffer an ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), the deadliest kind of heart attack. Thanks to our affiliation with Duke Medicine, cardiology experts at our Cochrane Heart Center can use the latest diagnostic and treatment procedures to help combat heart disease. Our skilled team at Keyserling Cancer Center offers patients medical and radiation oncology, and our Duke affiliation provides access to the most up-to-date, effective treatment options. Through Duke, participation in clinical trials is frequently available locally to patients with the most common cancers, including those of the lung, breast and colon.

Community EngagementNow more than ever, a person’s health is in his or her own hands. From knowing how and when to seek medical services, to complying with treatment recommendations, to taking active steps toward a healthier lifestyle, good health is directly tied to personal accountability. Beaufort Memorial is here as your advocate, helping you learn how to make your own good health a greater priority. You can look forward to more and more opportunities to connect with us, like off-campus activities and screenings, educational lectures, and information, tips and stories that can inspire all of us to live well.

Seventy years of service is a milestone for any organization. When you’re the guardian of your community’s health, longevity takes on new meaning. For us, it’s the gift of seeing generations of neighbors live and grow in a community that is beyond distinctive. It’s working to stay at the forefront of medical services. More than anything, it’s a steadfast commitment to improving the health of our community, one person at a time.

We’re proud of our legacy, our growing list of accomplishments and the moments that have made a difference in the lives of so many people. The stories of life-changing care, personal fortitude and quiet compassion form a tapestry of service we believe is a direct reflection of the character and culture of our organization.

We celebrate these years of service with a renewed commitment to helping you — our friends, family and neighbors — live the healthiest and most meaningful life possible. Together, we’ll work to explore what it means to live well in a part of the world that is uniquely our own.
