No. 39 l Spring 2018 Every year, Ryman Arts connects with over 2,000 students through school presentations, community fairs, and Application Days. These efforts combat the challenges that some students experience in learning about and completing the application to our highly competitive program. Through strong relationships with public school teachers like Ms. T, we have made great strides in increasing access to Ryman Arts. Application Days have been successful in creating a supportive environment where prospective students can take an introductory drawing class led by one of our faculty and work on a still life that can be included in their application. Ms. T stated, “Students got to see Ryman Arts students in class, allowing them to see if this was something they truly wish to pursue.” Ms. T is an exemplary model of the community champions we count on to learn about student needs in our communities. Because of her initiative, we have continued to build our relationship with La Tijera Charter School and recently added a special in-school workshop for her students. “It was incredible having Miss Robin come out to my classroom to facilitate a two-day workshop for students who are applying. Her approach in my classroom gave students a real taste of what it would be like [at Ryman Arts].” Ensuring broad access to Ryman Arts remains an important part of our efforts because of the exponential difference it can make in the lives of students with the fewest opportunities. We are grateful to Ms. T and all of our teacher partners. Every year, Ryman Arts connects with over 2,000 students through school presentations, community fairs, and Application Days. These efforts combat the challenges that some students experience in learning about and completing the application to our highly competitive program. Through strong relationships with public school teachers like

Ms. T, we have made great strides in increasing access to Ryman Arts.

Application Days have been successful in creating a supportive environment where prospective students can take an introductory drawing class led by one of our faculty and work on a still life that can be included in their application.

Ms. T stated, “Students got to see Ryman Arts students in class, allowing them to see if this was something they truly wish to pursue.”

Ms.

Her approach in my classroom gave students a real taste of what it would be like [at Ryman Arts].”

Ensuring broad access to Ryman Arts remains an important part of our efforts because of the exponential difference it can make in the lives of students with the fewest opportunities. We are grateful to Ms. T and all of our teacher partners.

“I encourage my students to apply [to Ryman Arts] because it forces them out of their bubble of comfort and complacency. Students are exposed to quality art supplies and instruction they may not be able to afford on their own,” says L’lia Thomas (Ms. T) from La Tijera K-8 Academy of Excellence Charter School.

On Sunday, May 6, Tania Norris welcomed The Herb Ryman Circle into her home for At Home with Herb Ryman, a garden party complete with garden party attire, a view of Tania’s extensive Herb Ryman art collection displayed throughout her home, and a stroll in the rose garden. Tania was a friend of Herb Ryman’s and an original W.E.D. employee in the 1960s.

The Herb Ryman Circle is a group created to share occasional stories about Herb Ryman’s impact at Disney and beyond, offer first looks at discoveries made in our archives and fine art collection, and provide exclusive opportunities to go behind-the-scenes.

In March, Elizabeth Turk worked with Ryman Arts students at her home studio to choreograph a preview of her upcoming Shoreline Project, giving the students a taste of her collaborative work process. Later in the month, Elizabeth hosted an evening gathering for friends of Ryman Arts where the students gave a short performance with Turk’s innovative, lighted umbrellas as the sky grew dark. The evening was sponsored by Lupe Erwin of Wood Gutmann & Bogart Insurance and Ryman Arts Board Member Robin Kalota of Plan Art LLC.

You Create a Strong Community

Diane Brigham, Executive Director

Thanks to the support of all our donors listed here and our many community partners highlighted throughout this issue, you have

created a strong community that equips the young artists of Ryman Arts for their future success. Whether we just met at one of our special events this spring, you have been a long-time supporter, or you are an educational partner in the community, we value your role in supporting the creative youth of Southern California. Just to mention two partners featured here, our students benefit from working with contemporary artists like Elizabeth Turk, as well as the legacy highlighted by the wonderful collection of Herb Ryman’s art at the home of collector Tania Norris.

I also want to send a special note of appreciation to Wayne Hunt, who recently completed a two year term as Board

New Board Member Fri Forjindam, Mycotoo, Inc.

President, and to Phil Hettema, who was elected in December as our new President. We also welcome newly elected Board member Fri Forjindam.

Thank you all! And if you have not joined in yet, won’t you consider becoming part of our strong and inclusive community?

Live Talks Los Angeles invited Ryman Arts alumni to sketch Shepard Fairey in conversation with Henry Rollins to discuss his new book, OBEY: Supply and Demand The Art of Shepard Fairey on Sunday, May 6. After the interview, our alumni showcased their drawings of the event for guests and met Shepard Fairey.
