Creating an HTML Page for Your Laulima Homepage A homepage can help set the tone for the class as well as provide important or updated information to those in the site. This guide covers creating an HTML page within Laulima and then linking it to your Homepage. To begin, add a folder called “Homepage” in your course’s Resources tool by choosing “Create Folders” from the Add dropdown list. Next, upload any desired image files you wish to use to new Homepage folder by choosing “Upload Files” from it’s Add dropdown list. 1

Creating an HTML Page for Your Laulima Homepage A homepage can help set the tone for the class as well as provide important or updated information to those in the site. This guide covers creating an HTML page within Laulima and then linking it to your Homepage.

To begin, add a folder called “Homepage” in your course’s Resources tool by choosing “Create Folders” from the Add dropdown list.

Next, upload any desired image files you wish to use to new Homepage folder by choosing “Upload Files” from it’s Add dropdown list.

Now, create a new web page within the Homepage folder. To do so, click it’s Add drop-down menu and choose “Create HTML Page.”

Create your HTML page using the HTML editor’s options that are similar to using Microsoft Word. If you wish you can use the Homepage template provided on the Distance Learning website.

Adding an Image to Your HMTL Page: Put your cursor where you want your image to appear and click the “Insert/Edit Image” button in the

editor’s toolbar.

The Image Properties window will appear. In the URL field you can either copy and paste the URL for an image, or you can click on the “Browse Server” button.

In the new window the left column will show the Resources folders of courses for which you are the instructor or maintainer. Their image files and folders will appear in the right column. Click on the link of the folder for your current course, click the “Homepage” folder’s link, and click the image you want to insert.

The Image Properties window will re-appear with the URL for the image automatically inserted into the URL field. Important: To meet ADA accessibility requirements, if the image is purely decorative, in the “Alternative Text” field type in two quote marks (ex: “”). If the image contains important information type a succinct description in the field. If the image is too big you can change the size of the image by adjusting it’s width and height. When you’re done click the “OK” button.

When you are finished designing your HTML page click the “Continue” button to save the file.

The Create HTML page will appear. In the Name field enter “homepage.html” (it’s helpful to add .html to the title so you can recognize it easier) and click the “Finish” button.

You will see your new HTML page listed in the Homepage folder. To view the HTML page, click on it’s link.

Your HTML page will open in a new browser window or tab.

Linking the HTML Page to Your Homepage Area: Now you will add the link to this HTML page to the Homepage area of your course. While looking at the HTML page in the new window or tab copy the URL.

Navigate to the Homepage by clicking the “Home” button in the Course menu on the left-hand side of your course, and clicking the edit icon in the right-hand corner of the Homepage’s title.

Within the edit page screen scroll down and paste the URL for the HTML page in the box labeled, “Site Info URL,” then click the “Update Options” button.

Your HTML page will now appear on the course’s Homepage. To edit the content, return to the HTML file in the Resources tool and choose “Edit Contents” from the HTML file’s Action dropdown list.
