Creating an Assignment in Canvas This is actually much easier than it sounds, and you're probably sick of reading things I've written so I'll just use screenshots to walk you through. To begin, open another tab with preston.instructure.com so you can have the instructions open here while you work there. On the right, go to Courses and choose the course you want to edit. Next, you should choose 'Outcomes' from the menu on the left.

Outcomes can be things you create on your own that you want to track, or things that are provided for you. Here's creating one of your own:

Either choose or create an outcome and save it. Once you do, you can tie any assignment, quiz or discussion to it, and it will show you progress on a skill as well as the individual assignment. This is the future of grading, but we're not there yet. Next, click the 'Assignments' button on the left. Once there, click the '+' button to create a new assignment. You'll get a popup like this:

Give it a title, a due date, and a point value. Then click 'More Options' to actually edit the assignment. This opens a page that looks a lot like a Word document. You enter your assignment description, instructions, etc. here. If you want to embed a picture, go out and find one online and copy the web address for it. Then click this button to paste it in:

They usually don't come in the size you want, so click the picture to resize it.

If you want to embed a video from YouTube, just click the YouTube icon and paste in the video address. If your kids won't have access to YouTube in school, just put an 'ss' in front of the 'youtube.com' part of the web address and hit enter and it'll take you to a place where you can download the video.

To insert a video or any other file type into your assignment, use the set of options on the left. They look like this:

That's it, really. From there, you can choose how the assignment is submitted below:

If you want things to sync to PowerSchool when you grade them, click this button:

Finally, you can use that outcome you chose earlier as part of a rubric by choosing 'Use a Rubric' and then 'Find Outcomes'.

Just pick the one you created earlier, choose 'Use this rubric for grading' and whenever a student submits something, you can just click on the rubric where they fall and it will track progress across assignments. There are some other cool things here, but that's probably enough for today.

To complete this part of the assignment, just tell me which course you created an assignment for and I'll go in and look at it. Part 7: Feedback
