Tailor-Made Website Using Dreamweaver & Second Site:Evaluation

Initial design setup of your ownwebsite, and the learning curve ofthe web editing software can bevery high and challenging

Dreamweaver [or other editingtool] is expensive

Initial outlay for domain & hosting(2-year contract) is expensive.

Secondsite only works inconjunction with The MasterGenealogist

Your content may need someinitial data cleanup

The uploading process to yourwebsite can be time consuming

DisadvantagesVery customisable – look-and-feel of narratives section can bealso be unique

Second Site is very quick to learnand easy to use. The results are“award winning”

The publishing direct from yourdata reduces data maintenancesignificantly

Requires best-practices –maintaining sources, andsentence construction

PHP Websites: Technical View

PHP stands for PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor.

PHP is an HTML-embedded scripting language. Much of itssyntax is borrowed from C, Java and Perl with a couple ofunique PHP-specific features thrown in. The goal of thelanguage is to allow web developers to write dynamicallygenerated pages quickly.

It normally requires the following to be present on your website:

1. PHP (a scripting language, 4.0 or higher preferred)2. MySQL (a database, 4.0.1 or higher preferred, but will also work

on earlier versions back to 3.23.0)3. You may also need an FTP program

PHP Websites: What Does That Mean to a FamilyHistorian?

It is a powerful way to manage and display your genealogy data onthe internet, all without generating a single page of HTML. Instead, your information is stored in MySQL database tables anddynamically displayed in attractive fashion with PHP.

It stores your data on your server instead of on your own hard drive.Alternatively, you can create a GEDCOM, and upload it from yourwebsite

You can make it private so that only you can see the data. Or youcan give access to a few other family members, or everyone. Youcan also allow other people to add information.

It is installed on a web server (that has a MySQL database)Use a PHP Family History Program:
