Creating a Local Internet Connection on a Nautiz X7 Hand

Held Computer

Introduction This guide describes how to create and establish an Internet connection

on a Nautiz X7 that has an internal GSM modem.

We use the Internet connection to connect to Internet-based GPS

networks and reference stations that stream GPS data. This data is

used to reduce our autonomous GPS positions (approximately 10 metre

accuracy) into RTK positions (centimeter accuracy).

After the Internet connection is made, we will then test to ensure we

are on the Internet.

Important Note: You only need to create a connection once. After

that FieldGenius and EvidenceRecorder will continue to use this

already-created connection.

Internet

Providers Throughout the world there are many Internet providers.

This guide shows you the steps to connect to a GSM-based cellular

Internet account. The example we use in this guide is to connect to a

Canadian Internet provider called Rogers and the settings used are

specific to that provider. You will need to learn what these same

settings are for your local provider, but the steps are the same to

establish a connection.

Getting a SIM

Card Before you begin, you will need to acquire a GSM-based SIM card that

has a data account associated with it. Your cellular provider can

provide you with a SIM card.

A SIM card or Subscriber Identity Module is a portable memory chip

used in some models of cellular telephones (and modems). The SIM

holds personal identity information, cell phone number, phone book,

text messages and other data. It can be thought of as a mini hard disk

that automatically activates the phone into which it is inserted.

In the past we have seen that a 50Mb/month data plan should be

adequate to meet your surveying needs. You can always increase this

if you require more data.

Congratulations You have successfully created an Internet connection using

Windows Mobile 6. Then you successfully tested that Internet

connection.

Remember, FieldGenius and EvidenceRecorder will continue to use

this connection to connect to the Internet. You only have to create

this connection once. In other words, you don’t have to follow these

steps each and every time you want to survey using the Internet.

The only instances I can think of where you might need to create a

new connection is:

if you have mistakenly deleted this connection,

if your network provider has changed their connection

settings, or

you are in a different region and you must create a new

connection using the regional connection settings.

Glossary GPS – Global Positioning System

GSM – Global System for Mobile Communications

CDMA – Code Division Multiple Access

ISP = Internet Service Provider

SIM - Subscriber Identity Module
