PresenterPresentation NotesMary – Describe design and components of the curriculum?Participants - Who participated in your campus pilot? How did you identify and recruit participants?VoluntaryPatrick: I invited all faculty, knowing that I wouldn’t be overwhelmed with responses. I got a small group, most of whom taught a gateway course. Some pilot campuses selected facultyOpen invitationOpen/included adjunct faculty (food) (follow question by Mary about adjuncts and food)Logistics – How many sessions? Length of session? Supplies? How much did this cost? What supplies did you need/use? Future implementation costs?Jessica: “higher end”Patrick: No supplies/no cost

  • For the Panel …What did your participants say about their experience in the program?

What component did your participants enjoy the most? Least?

    PresenterPresentation Notes

Experience - What did the participants say about their experience with the program? Video(s) and EvaluationsExperience - What was the component that your participants enjoyed most? Least? [incorporate at least one activity from curriculum]My favorite “No”.Crumpled paper activity. All mistakes are not created equal.Praise scenario.Patrick: PERTS has a lot of great tools for kickstarting conversations about our behaviors in the classroom. One that my participants enjoyed got a lot from was a short video about praise. We used to categorize the types of praise we gave students as either effort praise, intelligence praise, or neutral praise, and to think about how we could rephrase intelligence praise and turn it into effort praise.Patrick: I don’t think there was anything that participants didn’t enjoy, but I think we might have achieved more if we had longer sessions--perhaps two two-to-three-hour sessions rather than four one-hour sessions.

  • For the Panel …How does the Growth Mindset for Educators Curriculum support the Student Success Commitments?

    PresenterPresentation Notes

Broader Application - How does this program connect with the student success commitments? (intervene, structure of courses)Patrick: The goal of the sessions is to help faculty create  a growth mindset culture in their classrooms--to help them encourage a growth mindset in students as they “monitor student behavior and progress… and intervene.” I also see a connection to “know[ing] campus resources and direct[ing] students to them when needed,” because one strategy for responding to student errors is to point them toward resources like tutoring.Imitatimation of subjects - Jessica and Kristin

  • Final Thoughts …The Essence of a Growth Mindset

When students believe that their choices and behaviors impact outcomes then they continue to stay in the course and succeed. And when they believe that there is a set ability or standard, and they fall or begin to fall below this standard, they quit.
