Matching Mission & Values

Universities – in particular, foundation universities –

are themselves social enterprises.

Foundations – through the work of their endowments –

can be first-mover impact investors.

CAMPUS Y

(UNC –

Chapel Hill)

From Innovation to Impact In January 2012 a selection team of social innovation and

entrepreneurship experts from UNC-Chapel Hill and the broader

community evaluated 17 teams competing for seed capital,

dedicated workspace and equipment, capacity-building

workshops, and expert coaching services. Two for-profit and

two non-profit teams were chosen as the

Incubator's first full-time residents, qualifying them

for $15,000 in seed capital to be disbursed over

their 18-24 month incubation period.

In the Social Innovation Incubator's first semester (Spring 2012), the

Campus Y held workshops on legal and financial liability, non-

profit incorporation, organizational messaging, strategic business

planning, board development, grant writing and marketing that

were also open and promoted to a campus-wide audience.

Incubator startup teams and aspiring UNC social

entrepreneurs were able to leverage the expertise

of leading social enterprise CEOs, renowned

global philanthropists, and distinguished UNC

alumni and professors.

Social Innovation Incubator

The SII offers two incubation programs:

Vector Program members receive tailored, one-on-one consulting, access to

advisors, and discounts on services and events. The Vector Program is focused on

social enterprises with an established business model that are currently generating

revenue and/or hold significant, proven IP. Membership is by invitation only.

Circuit Program members move through a six-month incubation program together.

Small group meetings every other week alternate between workshops delivered

by local experts and facilitated peer-mentoring sessions. The program uses the

Lean Startup methodology, Business Model Canvas, and customer discovery

process to guide development of successful social enterprises. Those who

successfully complete the program are invited to participate in the Social

Innovation Expo and Demo Day (formerly Pitch Fest) in June

"The most incredible part of the journey

was being in the field with the people

of India and seeing social impact take

shape. No classroom alone could offer

this kind of inspiring and humbling

experience."
