This project was created to assist students with Google Apps. It’s an engaging project that teaches more than just history and geography. By integrating the assortment of Google Apps, students get a meaningful and authentic learning experience that will carry over to other disciplines.
Introduction
● Student will complete several activities using several Google Apps.
● Students will be saving each activity in their Google Docs
● Each Activity will be represented in the final cumulative project, a Google Site
Process:
Grades 5th - High School.
Time Frame: Should begin in October/November and have a due date after your Spring Break (April). Content Areas:Technology, Geography, Language Arts, Science, Art, Physical Education, History/Social Studies

Task # 1 Introduction
• Read Book – Make Way for Ducklings
• Have students take notes on the places the ducks visited
• Class discussion – gender roles, Boston, what they liked or disliked about the city…

Task #2 - Slide ShowLanguage Arts Slide Show
•List 10 fun facts about ducks.•Include an image with each
fact•Find a YouTube Video of ducks
being rescued or helped across the street by a police officer (and yes, there are a lot!) Insert the YouTube in your page/slide.
• Create a page or slide that demonstrates the roles of ducks in the family - include pictures and some basic information: use Google Docs with the research tool!
Task #3 Tour BuilderPut your story on the Map!
After a bit of practice, students found the places the ducks had traveled in Boston. They used their notes, found the location and pinpointed each location and inserted a information about each place.
We even uploaded our own placemark!
They were creating their own paths!

Task #5 - Creating a Photo StorySocial Studies
Sites slides
● Students will put together a photo story using Google Slides or Sites. ● They are to travel with a rubber duck from September to the end of their
Spring Break taking pictures of interest along the way. ● The project is to include their personal photos as well as Google images. ● Pictures are required to include their rubber duck.
The quacktastic adventure begins! Students were given a rubber duck as a travel companion.

and we made business cards for our
duck.

To be successful, each students needed:
● Access to Internet● Students will need a basic concept of a photo editing
program, like Pixie 4, Sumopaint.com or Photoshop - you can also do a certian amount of editing and photoshopping with Google Draw!
● Digital camera / phone camera…(if they are doing this at home)
● Google Slides and/or Google Sites● Google drive to save documents and pictures.
The Process: Students were asked to:
Put together a Google Slide Presentation on your travels.
• Collect pictures using personal pictures and Google Images.
Required Elements• Students will be required to collect pictures from regions of the United States (or
your state) by using Google Images or personal pictures.
• Option 1 – If you are doing a U.S. Project:• Students must collect at least 2 pictures from 2 states for each region. • Each picture must represent a different theme of Geography. • All 5 themes must be represented in the final project. • Each picture must have a caption explaining the theme and location.• Personal photos to include a rubber duck will be collected throughout the project.
Option 2 – If you are opting for a state project:• Students must collect at least 2 pictures from each region of your state. • Each picture must represent a different theme of Geography and an historical
place of ineterest. • All 5 themes must be represented in the final project. • Each picture must have a caption explaining the theme and location.• Personal photos to include a rubber duck will be collected throughout the

Required: Create a postcard from one of the locations you included.This postcard was created by using Google
Drawing with research tool.

In addition to their regional pictures, students were taught how to ‘photoshop’ their ducks into various images. Using this knowledge, they were asked to ‘photoshop’ their duck into a sport picture using Google Draw and Tech4Learning Pixie for the more complicated images.

Geo Caching with our Ducks
PE – To support the wellness initiative, Students ran a Boston Marathon. They put in 26 miles of activity between October and April.
Art – Our fabulous Art Teacher had the students create a 3D replica of a famous painting and the 3D part had to be a paper Mache rubber duck that was part of the picture.
Keep in mind that a research project can stem from any of these topics, from The History of Marathons, to Mallard Duck Migration.
Using GPS with StudentsHigh Tech Hide & Seek!When the snow finally
melted….To meet the new GPS Sol standard, our students were taken to task with an emerging GPS-based activity by using the technology tool, GPS receivers, and , geocaching with rubber ducks.
•Students had a quick lesson on how to use the GPS units. They knew about absolute location from the 5 Themes of Geography. •Students were placed in groups of 5. •Each group had 3 GPS units. •There were 6 hidden duck-caches along our soccer field•When they found their duck, they had to replace it exactly where they found it.

No Water off a Duck’s BackWe have all seen pictures and videos of wildlife covered in black, sticky oil, especially after
the BP oil spill in the Gulf. To give students a better understanding of Human Environment Interaction, students created their own oil spill (in a pan)then given a bird feather. They took their feather for a swim in their oil spill then set out to clean up their mess using

Task 10 Putting it all Together
Using a snap shot and images from the all of the activities, students will put together a Google Site. This is a perfect final evaluation and to have students create and communicate their hard work!
