Introduction

As technology comfortably makes it’s way into classrooms, teachers are granted the option to communicate electronically with students, parents and other teachers. Globalization among students provides world-wide opportunities to connect with other students about school, culture, and their lives in general. Chapter 8 which emphasizes globalization and education, illustrates this kind of interaction and how it’s effective for our students in the classroom.

Knowledge Economy

Knowledge economy is the idea of an economic system using and exchanging knowledge. The concept allows for knowledge to be used as an asset and a key product.

“Flat World”

When Thomas Friedman says the world is flat, he is referring to the competition of industrialization and emerging-market countries and how there is no vertical transition.

The implication for teaching and learning is that in a flat world, students can inevitably get left behind. Teachers need to overcome the flat world by learning what to learn in the global knowledge economy.

Essential Cognitive Backpack Skills

* Interpretation refers to students’ ability to analyze materials, not just memorize facts about it. To interpret information, students’ not only have to grasp it, but they also need to understand it in many different ways. This requires conversation and discussion.

* Instrumentation means students’ skills in effectively using their time, managing their responsibilities, and establishing their priorities.

* Interaction refers to students’ ability to form and sustain productive and fulfilling relationships that enable them to collaborate with others, retain their individuality, and communicate effectively.

* Inner direction refers to some of the ideas that have pervaded this text: in particular, the capacity for self-reflection and knowing one’s strengths and weaknesses.

I think I possess these skills for the most part. The only one I feel I struggle with at times may be interpretation because sometimes it’s hard for me to grasp a certain lesson, and sometimes I don’t see it in more than one way.

Videoconferencing

Videoconferencing is real-time audio and video communication allowing individuals or groups at different locations to talk in a face to face setting.

Distance Learning

Distance learning is education in which students and teachers are not physically present at the same time.

I’ve never experienced videoconference or know anyone that has but I have experienced distance learning. Distance learning is a great way for a student to learn when they’re not able to be in the classroom. The advantages are that even with a due date and time you can work on assignments when it’s good for you. However, the disadvantages are that sometimes you may not understand something and even though your email the teacher you still may not understand how they are explaining it to you.

The skills that have replaced the “three R’s” are: knowing more about the

I think my strengths would be managing new sources of information and my challenges would be thinking outside the box.

Globalization

Globalization is when companies in India and China are becoming part of a global supply chain that extends across oceans providing everything from service representatives and X-ray interpretation to component manufacturing.

Knowledge Economy

Knowledge economy is an economic system in which the use and exchange of knowledge plays a dominant role. In this kind of economy, knowledge is both an economic asset and a key product.

Characteristics

Characteristics of people who are able to a global knowledge economy successfully: These people know what they are doing

and know how to learn. Also, they know how to communicate with others well.

Characteristics of people who are able to “learn how to learn”: They know that learning how to learn is

actually more important than what you learn.

Implications of the Global Knowledge Economy

One would be that your job as a teacher is to demonstrate a love and passion for learning.

“You can’t light the fire of passion in someone else if it does not burn in you to begin with”. (Thomas Friedman-2006)

Skills for 21st Century

The “skills for the twenty-first century” are: Knowing more about the world Thinking outside the box Managing new sources of information Developing good people skills

I feel that I personally need to know more about the world. As far as thinking outside the box goes, I do that quite often. Managing new sources of information is something I need to do a little bit of work on. I feel I have good people skills, however there is always room for improvement.

Distance Learning

Distance learning is education in which students and teachers are not physically present at the same site.

Advantage: Courses that a student can’t normally get are

sometimes offered. Also, one school serves grades pre-k through twelfth grade.

Conclusion

We’ve come to learn through Chapter 8 that our role as a teacher during the twenty-first century is significant. The world is enduring rapid change, especially within the school system. As future educators, it’s important to be aware of these changes and adapt to the open-source world in ways your students can learn. As the three C’s replace the 3 R’s of Education, we start to see the field of teaching unravel and become more challenging than ever before. The main idea expressed in this chapter- is to be teachers that help students become consumers of information, and able to formulate their own opinions. Also, help them find ways to be creative and connect to the real world. Don’t be discouraged by the global classroom! Embrace your capacity and help them find a meaning.
