When we as a community come together, so much is possible. The stories in this report are why we come to work every day. They represent what is possible when we have your support. We are fortunate to live and work in communities with people who understand the life-changing impact they can make by joining in our Goodwill mission. Let’s take a moment to reflect on the impact you have made and celebrate the possibilities that your future support will create. Thanks to you, Almost Home partners with Habitat for Humanity to help applicants improve their eligibility status for home ownership through life and social skills, financial and vocational work.

Shantelly Lopez, a single mom of three, dreamed of owning a home and started the process two years ago. During that time, Kristi Clover, Almost Home program coordinator, helped Shantelly boost her credit score, get her debt in order, take budgeting classes and refi-nance her car loan to get a lower interest rate.

“I consider my role really kind of like an advo-cate for them also sort of life coach and just really helping create that path.” Kristi said.

In November, Shantelly became the first person in her family to own a home. “I’m most excited about moving in, starting fresh somewhere with my kids and them seeing the end process, too.”

Thanks to you, James Fleishman, a cashier at the Marshfield Retail Store and Training Center since 2007, could make a life-changing connection with a young customer.

James met teenager Jessica Bredl more than a decade ago during her shopping visits to Good-will with her mom, Sue. Both Jessica and James use wheelchairs and have connected over that commonality.

James also has encouraged Jessica to look for employment opportunities and to work with Goodwill programs and the Wisconsin Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, like he did, to get a job.

“Jessica says she learned to push herself to get further in life from James,” said Sue, adding that Jessica is now using a posterior walker to get around school. “I am so thankful to him for being able to get through to her in a way I can’t. James inspires Jessica to try new things she thinks she can’t do.”

Thanks to you, Josh, 19, who has played baseball through the Miracle League of the Fox Valley and was part of Goodwill’s School-to-Work program, landed a job at Rogan’s Shoes with the help of Goodwill’s job-training support and in partnership with the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation.

He was one of 299 individuals who received job training in 2018 through Vocational Support Services program, which supports people with disabilities in obtaining and maintaining employ-ment in the community.

“The progress Josh has shown is a testament to his increasing maturity and the amazing staff at Rogan’s,” said David Foertsch, Josh’s vocational coordinator. “This hasn’t only been a job for Josh, it’s been an environment of continuing growth, where he’s accepted for who he is and given the platform to shine around others.”

“I’ve seen him grow more independent,” said his mom, Deb, adding that Josh is excited about go-ing to work and earning a paycheck and that the social outreach a job provides is crucial. “It’s up-lifting in the sense that we’re seeing him become a young adult and seeing a pathway toward his future.”

Thanks to you, the Miracle League of the Fox Valley, Miracle League of the Lakeshore and Miracle League of the Chippewa Valley programs are able to give children with disabilities the opportunity to play baseball in an organized, noncompetitive league on an accessible base-ball field. In 2018, 509 kids played baseball through these three leagues. Cati Borowski was one of them.

For seven years, the Miracle League of the Fox Valley has taken Cati from the sidelines to the dugout and given her happiness, friendships and something to call her own.

“It’s fun independence for her,” her mom, Cheri, said. “She can show us and say, ‘Look at me.’”

Miracle League has given the Borowski family peace of mind knowing she is loved and ac-cepted, and the program has developed Cati’s relationship-building and communication skills along with her confidence, self-esteem and pride in being part of a team.

“To see her just be part of something is really cool,” Cheri said.
