Letter from the Director The Art of GivingAs fall settles upon us, the Hui is eagerly anticipating a festive season that celebrates the visual arts in so many unique and creative ways! In August, our gallery will be filled with the colorful creations of over 250 Maui youth who laughed, danced, and imagined their way through a summer of excitement, creativity and culture at Camp Kaluanui. In September & October, the gallery will transition to feature Malama Wao Akua—an exhibition that

creatively merges the worlds of art and conservation with artwork that honors Maui Nui’s unique plant and animal species. We hope the community will enjoy the artful representations of native species and learn more about our islands’ incredible watersheds. It has been a pleasure to collaborate with East Maui Watershed Partnership in coordinating this powerful exhibition.

Moving into the holiday season of giving, the Hui offers several fantastic opportunities to gather together and support visual arts education. On November 14th at Hotel Wailea, the Hui will host the 9th Annual Hui No‘eau Wailea Food & Wine Celebration, which promises to be a delicious evening featuring Maui’s top chefs and vintners—all gathering in support of the Hui! On December 1st, I invite you to join the Hui ‘ohana at the Kaluanui Estate to celebrate First Night—a special evening of Hui Holidays shopping with pupu, music, one-night only vendors, and other special surprises! By shopping local at First Night (and throughout the months of November & December in our Hui Holidays showcase!), you give back to local artists and the Hui in a meaningful way—while getting your holiday shopping done!

The Hui is truly a unique and special place and I am so grateful to all our members and supporters for ensuring the long-term sustainability of our visual arts center. Before the end of every year, the Hui offers an important giving opportunity: the Annual Fund. This fund is vital to sustaining the Hui’s mission of unlocking creativity through exceptional visual arts education and enhancing this endeavor through the preservation of the historical Kaluanui Estate. I encourage you to contribute to the Hui this holiday season with a tax-deductible donation. Every donation and every membership makes a difference! Please take a moment to look over our membership benefits and giving opportunities or visit us and take a class, see an exhibition, watch artists at work, and enjoy the beautiful views from the grounds

of Kaluanui. Mahalo!

Spotlight on Giving! Support the Hui’s Youth Programs in 2015!

Due to budget cuts affecting public school arts programs, many children do not have access to arts education and, as a result, the Hui has become an even more vital community resource for Maui’s keiki. Hui No‘eau’s art camps, after-school classes, field trips, and family programs provide youth with meaningful opportunities for self-expression and skill building, positive adult role models, and experiences that make a difference in children’s lifelong academic and social success. In 2014, the Hui served over 2,000 Maui children and teens through our youth programs! The Hui needs your support, now more than ever, to continue providing important visual arts education opportunities and need-based scholarships for Maui’s young artists! Please help sustain the Hui’s Youth Programs or support a child in need by making a contribution today!

It’s easy to give! Your donations directly affect our local communities by helping us provide vital programs that promote lifelong learning in the arts through workshops and classes, field trips, family programs, gallery tours, community art events, educational outreach programs, and more! Every tax deductible contribution, no matter the size, makes a tremendous difference in our ability to serve the community by providing invaluable opportunities in the visual arts, helping to sustain the Hui’s historic legacy, and ensuring that future generations will be able to enjoy the beauty and history of Kaluanui and exceptional visual arts education.

Please make a tax-deductible donation today! The Hui appreciates donations sent by mail, securely submitted online at huinoeau.com/donate, or in person at our Kaluanui home, open daily from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm. We’d love to see you! Mahalo nui loa for keeping the arts alive on Maui!

“I believe the arts are integral to my son’s development. I'm sending him to school next year and I’m not sure how much exposure he will get to the arts. I am so happy the Hui is here as a resource.” – Laila Popata and Kahlil, Members since 2015.

“I am so fortunate to have the Hui as part of my life! I have been in the art world since college, graduating with a fine arts degree and producing different types of art most of my life, but I have never had a facility like the Hui in any place I have lived. It's beautiful, has a wonderful history, all types of art to view, partake in, and the people are great and so inspiring!” – Mary Grandy, Member Since 2008

“The Hui is really fun. In art camp, my favorite project was when we made our own bottle rockets and shot them with baking soda and vinegar. I liked that we got to invent the rockets on our own.” – Sophia Gallegos, Member since 2013.

“The grounds are so beautiful here, it’s hard not to be inspired! We are an artistic family and are so pleased that our children have a place to explore the arts. Exposing people to the arts and teaching appreciation for the arts is so important for our community. The Hui is also great for networking. We’ve met a group of like-minded parents and our children have made great friends at the Hui.” – Bernd Family, Members since 2015.

Join us for a creative and therapeutic art session that aims to wake up creativity and help you get out of your own way as you experience authentic creative expression. Absolutely no artistic experience is required, although spontaneous painting is a great way to help generate a feeling of freedom in those students with more artistic background. Participants will be given encouragement and guidelines to promote easy painting from the heart, not the head. Students will stand up and paint, choosing whatever colors speak to them and paint freely in a supportive environment where there are no rights or wrongs. Expressing yourself is a natural part of the creative process. By suspending judgments and allowing yourself to play, you will be turning off the intellect and allowing your heart to open up and guide you. These sessions are all about the process (not a technique class). Students paint for the first part of class and then will have time in the second part for deeper discussion and a look into what you have created as a window into personal discovery.
