Chicken Annie’s Original, PittsburgAnn Frances Rehak met Charley Pichler in 1914, and married on April 28, 1917. Charley, a miner, was in a mine accident in March 1933. Severely injured, it was now up to Annie to become the breadwinner of the family. Ann started serving chicken dinners in a small way in 1934. As the demand became greater, Ann took care of the purchasing, cooking, finances, etc., Charlie did some of the food preparation, bartended and ran the register. In 1963, Annie and Charlie decided to retire and let their children take over the operation. A new building in 1972 with increased seating and an enlarged menu was added to better serve the customers. What began in 1934 continues today with Annie’s children and grandchildren.
Chicken Mary’s, PittsburgJoe and Mary Zerngast started Chicken Mary’s in the early 1940s. Joe, a miner by trade, was no longer able to work due to poor health. In order to help support the family, Mary turned to what she knew best, cooking. In the beginning, with Joe’s help, Mary served customers in their home, seating them at the kitchen table. Soon, word spread about the great food and it became impossible to seat everyone in the Zerngast home. Consequently, in 1945, Joe and Mary purchased the Foxtown Mining Camp Pool Hall and moved it to a location just west of the current Chicken Mary’s. In 1961 Joe died but Mary, with the help of her son Zig and his wife Tootie, continued to run the restaurant. The current restaurant was built in 1966 and the staff work hard to ensure the fine heritage the Zerngasts began 60+ years ago.
Gebhardt’s Chicken Dinners, MulberryUpon receiving his honorable discharge from the United States Army in 1942, Ted Gebhardt married Maycle and they decided to move back to Ted’s home near Mulberry and run the family farm. Ted and Maycle purchased “The Little Honky Tonk” bar, a small watering hole located next to the farm and operated it until 1946. After that, Ted and Maycle decided a “honky tonk” was not the best atmosphere to raise kids in so they opened the restaurant on Sept. 16, 1946. Maycle’s sister, Tessie Goodman and Ted’s mother Margaret Gephardt, started putting recipes together and through trial and error, they came up with a menu that featured fried chicken. Meg (Ted & Maycle’s daughter and current owner) said it was her Dad’s signature dinner and still is today!
Barto’s Idle Hour, FrontenacRay Barto opened Barto’s Idle Hour in the early 1950’s to satisfy the need for what he deemed “a place to provide weekend entertainment.” Barto’s signature was the plethora of polka bands that performed there every Friday and Saturday night. In 1965, Ray opened a chicken restaurant right next door to the bar despite the presence of three other established chicken restaurants in the county -- Chicken Annie’s, Chicken Mary’s and Gephardt’s. The popularity of the place grew because it offered a little of something for everyone -- food from the descendants found in Frontenac including the strong Italian presence, German and Slavic influence, polka music, and a social spot for all ages. A variety of local polka musicians continue to perform live every Friday and Saturday night.

Chicken Annie’s of GirardEstablished in 1971, Louis and Louella Lipoglav (Louella was the daughter of the original Chicken Annie) purchased the old “Sunflower Tavern and Chicken Dinners” on Highway 47 from Louis’s mother Mary Pistornik. They then opened Chicken Annie’s of Girard. The chicken here is cooked to order so it may take a bit longer, but it comes straight from the fryer.

Memorial To Kansas Vietnam Veterans111 East ForestGirard, Kansas 66743(620) 724-6351, (620) 724-6578
Arma Veterans MemorialCorner of Washington and 5th StreetArma, Kansas 66712www.armakansas.org/ veteransmemorial/veteransmemorial.html
Dedicated on April 15, 1995, the Memorial to Kansas Vietnam Veterans is located on the historic courthouse square in downtown Girard. The memorial includes a granite wall inscribed with the names of all 777 Kansans who lost their lives in Vietnam, a UH-1H Huey Helicopter and flags of the five branches of military, a POW-MIA flag, Kansas flag and an American Flag.
The Arma Veterans Memorial was the vision of the Arma American Legion following World War II. The City of Arma constructed the memorial and was completed shortly after World War II. The names on the memorial represent local veterans who have served our country during war. The memorial includes flags from the five branches of military and the American flag.
A Salute to our Veterans
It’s no doubt that this country wouldn’t be the same without the hard work and dedication of our military veterans. Remembering and honoring those who have served our country is a top priority of Crawford County, and shows it’s efforts in many attractions across the area.
From the quiet and pristine Veterans Memorial Amphitheater on the campus at Pittsburg State University, to the eye popping Big Flag, and Huey Helicopter located at the memorials in Girard. Crawford County does it best when extending a big thank you to those who deserve it.

Arma Veterans MemorialCorner of Washington and 5th StreetArma, Kansas 66712www.armakansas.org/veteransmemorial/veteransmemorial.html
A Salute to our Veteransour Veterans
It’s no doubt that this country wouldn’t be the same without the hard work and dedication of our military veterans. Remembering and honoring those who have served our country is a top priority of Crawford County, and shows it’s efforts in many attractions across the area.
From the quiet and pristine Veterans Memorial Amphitheater on the campus at Pittsburg State University, to the eye popping Big Flag, and Huey Helicopter located at the memorials in Girard. Crawford County does it best when extending a big thank you to those who deserve it.

The Educational Themed Tour• Start the day off in northern Crawford County just west of Arcadia and take a trip back in time to the early days of one-room schoolhouse education at the Cato Historic Schoolhouse (located between Fort Scott and Pittsburg by turning west onto County Road 710, travel west two miles then turn north and follow the winding road 1 ½ miles to Cato). The Cato Historical Preservation Association maintains the school and it was placed on the Kansas Register of Historic Places. For more information or to arrange visits, contact Susie Stelle at (620) 232-6944, e-mail at [email protected] or online at www.catoschool.com • From Cato, travel southwest in Crawford County to visit the latest in education technology at the Southeast Kansas Educational Service Center-Greenbush next to the St. Aloysius National Historic Site (located 8 miles west of Girard on Kansas Highway 47). The Greenbush campus is the site for unique learning facilities such as the Wm. L. Abernathy Science Center and rain forest, Mission Space Station, PSU/Greenbush Astrophysical Observatory and Greenbush Archeological Dig. New to the Greenbush Campus will be biotechnology labs and a MediaGlobe Digital Planetarium especially designed to increase student achievement in math and science. For more information, contact Greenbush at (620) 724-6281 or log onto www.greenbush.org • For lunch, head back east on Highway 47 to Girard for a quaint dining experience with unique atmosphere at Celebrity’s (218 South Summit Street, (620) 724-4090), or enjoy the Peppermill Café (120 South Ozark, (620) 724-8020) or a taste of the Orient at Bamboo (126 East Forest, (620) 724-3800). • After lunch, venture back east again down Highway 47 and then south on Highway 69 to Frontenac for a stop at the Frontenac Bakery (211 North Crawford, (620) 231-7980 to arrange visits) to watch Frontenac Bread made in person. • After an education in bread baking, the culmination of this educational trip is a stop at the crown jewel of Southeast Kansas continuing education, Pittsburg State University.Featuring an enrollment of over 7,000, PSU features a wide variety of interesting places to visit including the Axe Library, the PSU Veterans Memorial Amphitheater, the Krug Art Gallery and University Art Gallery, the Overman Student Center, the Kansas Technology Center, the new Tyler Research Center and the new Kansas National Guard Training Center and Recreational Center. For more information on PSU, call (620) 231-7000 or long onto www.pittstate.edu.

• After Kiddieland, and miniature golf, the family can head north of Frontenac and view the Bison Herd on display at the Mined Land Wildlife Area (open year round). • After taking in the bison, the family can spend the late afternoon enjoying nature at the Crawford County State Park at Farlington on the 7.5-mile hiking trail (open year round, free). • For dinner, our family heads to Girard for a quaint dining experience with unique atmosphere at Celebrity’s (218 South Summit Street, (620) 724-4090), or enjoy the Peppermill Café (120 South Ozark, (620) 724-8020) or a taste of the Orient at Bamboo (126 East Forest, (620) 724-3800). * - Defining average as in Mom and Dad with two children, regardless if they are boys or girls. The College-age Couple Looking for an Affordable, Relaxing Themed Tour• This potential and often overlooked part of the tourist market will get its start on the Pittsburg State University campus at the University Gallery and Harry Krug Gallery (1701 South Broadway, open August-May, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, (620) 235-4305) taking in the latest displays and exhibits of work from across the United States. • From the art gallery, the couple can then enjoy one of the four championship golf courses featured in Crawford County, including the popular Four Oaks Golf Course, the challenging Crestwood Country Club, the quiet Girard Golf Course or the very playable Countryside Golf Course while working up an appetite. • For lunch, Chatter’s (2401 South Rouse, (620) 232-7277), located close to PSU or Bob’s Grill in downtown Pittsburg will offer a variety of tastes for the young tourists seeking something unique. • The young couple will allow their lunch to settle while touring the Crawford County Historical Museum (Highway 69 Bypass between Atkinson and 20th Street, Thursday-Sunday, 1-4 p.m., free admission, (620) 231-1440).
• After the history lesson, the couple can then enjoy an afternoon at The Spa at Jet Nails (901 West Atkinson, (620) 232-3224).
• For dinner, the couple can choose from other unique tastes including Napoli’s, 1301 North Broadway, or Jim’s Steakhouse, 1912 North Broadway, (620) 231-5770.

The Sportsman’s Day Trip• This popular tourist segment will get its start bright and early on one of the best kept fishing secrets in all of Kansas, if not all of the Midwest. Bone Creek Reservoir, home to the American Bass Anglers Association District 128 Tournaments, has been luring fisherman from all over the country for the past two decades. It’s common for local fishermen to pull out 10 to 12 pound bass only to toss them back (“It was too small,” they say.) • If the sportsman’s wife is uninterested in a morning spent on the lake, perhaps she would enjoy a morning at The Spa at Jet Nails (901 West Atkinson, (620) 232-3224). • After a morning of fishing, a good lunch would include a stop at Curbside BBQ (1002 S. Broadyway, 620-231-2929). • If our esteemed angler wants more fishing action, he could pursue more challenges on one of the many fishing tracts located inside the Mined Land Wildlife Area in Crawford County or Cherokee County. Local anglers are known to keep these fishing spots a secret, knowing full well a bevy of bass and even the popular trout are available to be caught. • If our sportsman is done with fishing, his next challenge could be found on one of the four championship golf courses featured in Crawford County, including the popular Four Oaks Golf Course, the challenging Crestwood Country Club, the quiet Girard Golf Course or the very playable Countryside Golf Course. • If golf is not our sportsman’s game, then a trip to either the T&C Wildlife Hunt Club in Arcadia (2461 Arrowhead Road, (620) 638-4300) or Claythorne Lodge near Hallowell (620) 597-2568) for an afternoon of skeet shooting or guided hunting will please the sportsman. • And once again, if the sportsman’s wife is uninterested, an afternoon of shopping at Meadowbrook Mall (202 East Centennial, (620) 231-9240) or shopping in one of the over 150 unique shops and businesses in Pittsburg will be satisfactory. • For dinner, especially if our proud sportsman is wise, he will treat the sportsman’s wife to a good dinner at Rockin’ K Steak and Ribs near Mulberry.

Discover the beauty of Pittsburg State UniversityNo visit to Crawford County would be complete without a stop at Pittsburg State University. Pittsburg State, a comprehensive graduate-level state university with an enrollment of more than 7,200, is the economic, social and cultural hub for Crawford County.
Residents and visitors alike may choose from hundreds of activities at PSU (many of them free) throughout the year. Rotating exhibits in the university’s art galleries, concerts and recitals in McCray Recital Hall, PSU Theatre productions, Opera Workshops and several major lecture series give visitors cultural options usually available only in large metropolitan areas.
Fans of Gorilla athletics are known for their passion and thousands of visitors come each year for contests in 11 men’s and women’s sports. Perhaps no single athletics-related event is better known than the communitywide GorillaFest tailgate party before home football game.
For those in a more contemplative mood, a walk through PSU’s beautifully landscaped campus might be in order. Walk from the historic Oval to the tranquil setting of Timmons Chapel on the shore of University Lake. Along the way, take time to see several outdoor sculptures and the Centennial Mural.
No visit to Pittsburg State University would be complete without a stop at the Veterans Memorial on the east side of the campus. The memorial, which honors all veterans, is unlike any other in the U.S. Since its construction in 2004, more than 100,000 visitors have spent time in the memorial’s peaceful amphitheater, where a pool reflects the eternal flame and the black granite panels that cover the memorial’s interior walls.
For information about events at Pittsburg State University, visit the PSU website at pittstate.edu or call 620-235-4122.
