Skipton is a small town, with about 14,500 residents, but has all the facilities of a much bigger place.
We’ve got our own castle – over 900 years old. Skipton Castle is one of the most complete and best preserved medieval castles in England with many events taking place throughout the year.
Skipton has superb independent shops, a famous market and two department stores so you can find anything you want on your doorstep, from major high street brands to unique “one-offs”.

Voted “The Great Street Award” in 2009 by the Academy of Urbanism, the High Street is a unique and major tourist attraction; the town celebrates its links to the historic importance of sheep in unique ways!
There are lots of places to eat and drink, from cafe bars and tearooms to traditional pubs and restaurants with great reputations.
Skipton and its surrounding area is a safe place to live and study with friendly locals always ready for a chat.
The Leeds Liverpool Canal runs through Skipton. You can go on boat trips or hire barges for special celebrations or long weekends; there are footpaths and picnic areas and in the Marina you’ll find a great place to relax – overlooked by the statue of cricketing legend Fred Trueman.
Skipton is the “Gateway to the Dales” – stunning limestone scenery and open countryside where you can participate in extreme sports such as rock climbing, pot holing and mountain biking or just take a leisurely stroll.
Skipton has its own train station with through trains to King’s Cross – you can be in London in under three hours - whilst Leeds and Manchester are just short journeys away by bus or train, so you can enjoy the cultural and retail experiences they offer – not to mention the night life of these major cities.
Just down the road is the famous town of Ilkley and its moor and the Lake District is only about an hour away by road.

The Environment
Our local environment is part of our campus and we try to integrate its resources, along with local know-how, to enrich our student experience. We make extensive use of the rich and varied environments and habitats of the Yorkshire Dales for our Environmental and Countryside related courses. Business students get involved in local market research activities. Horticulture and garden design students have been part of the medal winning teams at the prestigious RHS shows in Harrogate. The caring related courses are closely informed by our relationship with the Airedale NHS Trust: whilst out outdoor activities students have enviable access to caves, crags, mountains, moors, lakes and white water.
The Aireville Campus Gargrave Road, Skipton
Our main campus, located next to Aireville Park, has stunning views across the town to the countryside beyond. Here you will find our School of Art and Media which has a long-standing reputation for excellence. Courses are taught in specialist studios and workshops including; spacious drawing and painting and textiles studios; a well equipped metalwork and jewellery workshop; graphic design, sound, video and digital animation editing suites equipped with industry standard software; our own radio station; a photography studio along with performance space and a theatrical make up workshop.
Our business, management and computing courses are also taught on the Aireville Campus and we have just up-graded our teaching and specialist IT suites. The campus is also the centre for delivering our education and early years provision; health related subjects; travel and tourism; public services and humanities degree programmes. It is also the home of our Student Services Hub.
The Aviation Academy Leeds Bradford International Airport
All our aviation related degree programmes are delivered at our prestigious air-side campus at the Leeds Bradford International Airport so that you can experience the industry at first hand. Because we carry out training for the aviation industry we are always up-to-date in what we do and you will benefit from this. Our tutors have been recruited from the industry too and will be able to guide you towards your career aspirations through their wealth of experience and contacts. You can even take flying lessons with one of our partner organisations as one of the many benefits of the location.
Centre for Construction and Heritage Skills Airedale Business Park, Snaygill, Skipton
This is our newest campus and is designed to deliver both contemporary and traditional craft skills. In addition to the well equipped workshops for practical construction skills training there are purpose built heritage workshops for blacksmithing, forge work, stone carving and stained glass making. There is a state of the art materials testing laboratory and classroom IT facilities.
Centre for Rural and Equine Studies Auction Mart, Skipton
Just a short walk from the Aireville Campus is the centre where we deliver practical skills relating to our degree programmes. Situated in the centre of Skipton’s Auction Mart complex, this campus benefits from the close contact with the agricultural businesses based there. There is an extensive horticulture unit and a garden design studio; a fully equipped rural mechanics workshop and a purpose built equestrian centre. Teaching areas are well equipped with IT facilities. The Centre is also used as the base for our Outdoor Activities programmes and we have recently installed a climbing wall to enable students to develop practical climbing and instruction skills. (When not in use for teaching purposes, this facility can be used by all college students under supervision).
Centre for Service Industries High Street, Skipton
Set in the heart of Skipton is the original college building. This is our Centre for Service Industries, housing catering, hospitality, hair and beauty courses. We operate commercial salons and the Brasserie restaurant so our students can experience what it is like to apply their practical skills in a real working environment and understand issues around running a business. As an additional bonus any student can use these facilities.

Resources
Learning Resource Centres
The main Learning Resource Centre (LRC) is based at the Aireville Campus with specialist LRCs at the High Street Campus, Auction Mart Campus, Centre for Construction and Heritage Skills and The Aviation Academy.
There is a wide range of books, journals and magazines to help you with your studies and to supplement your own core texts. Journals and databases relevant to your subject area are available through the college’s Athens membership. You may also have access to a broad range of materials including on-line resources through the relevant partner university website and VLE. Computers can be used to access electronic databases and information sources, including the internet and the college Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) for research and assignment purposes. Facilities include photocopying, printing and catalogue search.
Friendly, experienced and qualified staff are available to provide support for information searching to help you to make the best use of the resources.
The Virtual Learning Environment (VLE)
As a student at Craven College you will have the opportunity to access web-based learning within your own course Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). The VLE is developed by your tutor to reflect the needs of your course syllabus . Visual and interactive activities are available, tutors and fellow students can be contacted more easily, resources are accessible, podcasts can be downloaded, coursework drafts can be emailed, progress tracked and much more.
Parking
With the exception of the High Street Campus, there are car parks available, open to staff and students alike. Users are required to have a parking permit, available from the main college receptions.
Social Facilities
Our Aireville Campus provides areas for meeting and eating, relaxing and socialising. Our student restaurant, The Connection, offers a range of appetising hot and cold food, snacks, cakes and drinks. The Cafe Bar offers a comfortable environment to go and refuel and relax, serving a variety of snacks and drinks in a pleasant setting with pool tables and Sky TV.
Our High Street Campus hosts its own cafe, The Venue, for food and drink along with the popular Brasserie Restaurant open for morning coffee and cakes, lunch or a three course evening meal. We also have refectories at our Auction Mart Campus and Centre for Construction and Heritage Skills. Snacks and hot drinks are available at The Aviation Academy, with an off-site cafe nearby.
Our Staff
We are extremely proud of our staff and believe that they are our most valuable resource. They are the core factor in your success, alongside of course, your commitment to study.
At Craven College we believe in team work and valuing the contributions which we each bring to the college. We have the benefit of highly qualified staff, many of them with Master’s degrees or Doctorates. Besides holding the recognised qualifications for their subject, our teaching staff have industrial or commercial experience and our support staff are equally specialised in their area.
All of our staff are committed to providing the best service for our students.
Teaching Areas
In our recent student survey 93% of our learners indicate that they are happy with their learning environment. We review our provision throughout the year and collect feedback on what resources need up-dating or replacing in order to maintain a good quality learning environment.
Our general classrooms are equipped with IT facilities for presentations and group work whilst specialist workshops are equipped to industry standard. We also have IT suites and areas where you can use your own lap tops.
Tyro
Tyro is the college’s highly successful business training unit with a track record of providing bespoke training to small and medium sized enterprises across the region. It also has a growing reputation at an international level delivering management training in the Middle East. The expertise and contacts developed within Tyro are shared with the rest of the college and influences curriculum developments and opportunities.

University of Bradford
The University of Bradford will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2016 and has vowed that its future like its past will be aimed at ‘Making Knowledge Work’; inspiring students and teachers alike. There are 10,000 students in Bradford and many more at franchise colleges around the world. The Foundation degrees Craven College has developed in liaison with the University of Bradford are an exciting mixture of the academic with the vocational. Students at Craven College can share its city centre facilities and the advantages of its academic reputation.
University of Huddersfield
The University of Huddersfield has a long tradition of providing excellent education, back to its roots in the Huddersfield Scientific and Mechanics’ Institute in 1825. They consistently score highly in the National Student Survey in which students are asked to rank their university experience against a range of criteria, and the university has a strong reputation for its teaching excellence and areas of internationally renowned research. Craven College is a member of the University’s Consortium for Post-Compulsory Education and Training (CPCET). It is also a member of the Huddersfield University Distributed Centre for Excellence in Teacher Training (HUDCETT).

Student Success
Mary Arber Foundation degree in Fashion and Jewellery
Mary reached the final stage of the prestigious Victoria and Albert Museum ‘Inspired by ...’ competition.
The competition is the VandA’s annual art, craft and design competition which encourages students to use the museum’s collections as a source of inspiration for their own work.
Mary’s work, ‘Memento Mori’, is an unusual necklace made from antique pins. It was inspired by the tradition of women wearing mourning jewellery following the death of a loved one.
The necklace was exhibited along with other finalists work in the VandA for several weeks. “ It’s only because of the Craven
College course that I had the opportunity to enter this competition. I was delighted to be short listed and it was a very humbling and exciting experience delivering work to such an awe inspiring place.”

Supporting You
Student Services
The Student Services team aims to support you in many ways while you are at college. We can help you choose the right course, access financial support and provide career information. Services include:
Counselling
A free, confidential counselling service is available to any student who may need help, advice or support regarding a personal problem or difficulty that might interfere with studies.
Advising and Guiding
Students who are unsure about careers or employment opportunities can make an appointment to see the Student Services Manager who can offer advice and support.
Accommodation
The college does not have direct access to student accommodation however Student Services can supply a list of local letting agents and accommodation providers.
Childcare
The college nursery takes children from the age of two to five years. The nursery provides a safe and stimulating environment with well qualified and experienced staff. Places must be booked in advance and application forms are available from Craven College Reception on 01756 791 411.
Help with funding childcare may be available; full-time students should contact Student Finance England. Part-time students may be able to apply for a contribution and should ask Student Services for information about funding and the college nursery.
Study Support
The college recognises that starting a degree course may be a big step and with this in mind is keen to support students with a wide range academic and pastoral support mechanisms. Tutorial support can help with day to day queries, in addition many courses offer on-line resources to help students working from home. Class sizes at the college tend to be smaller than those you might find at a larger institution giving you more opportunities for individual attention.
Students’ Union
All students are entitled to join the National Union of Students (NUS) and enjoy the many benefits and services available with this, both locally and nationally. With many discounts on offer at a variety of stores on the High Street you will be spoilt for choice.
Student Voice
Craven College aims to continually improve our service to learners so it is essential that we collect and act on student feedback. Students have numerous opportunities to give their views, from questionnaires, focus groups and spot surveys on particular issue.
We encourage active participation in course team meetings and management meetings through a system of course representatives.
Students also are involved in validating new degrees and giving feedback to the Quality Assurance Agency. So at every level you have the opportunity to make your individual views heard.
International Students
We welcome international students who have the relevant qualifications and correct visa status to study in the United Kingdom.
Please contact Student Services for further details and fees. Whilst we do not have specific college accommodation and support for our international students we appreciate the issues that you may face when studying abroad. Craven College has a reputation for caring about its students and the fact that we are a relatively small college means that you will not get lost in the system.
We have an additional advantage of being based in an historic town, with its own castle, surrounded by stunning landscapes providing many leisure activities for students, from walking to rock climbing and potholing.
Student Volunteering Programme
Having experience as a volunteer may prove to be a good way in to getting a job at the end of your course. Employers are looking for people who not only have good qualifications but experience of a working environment. At Craven College we have extensive opportunities for you try out different things and put your academic learning into practical contexts – you will find it really useful and it can also help you with your studies.

Your Finances Student Services at Craven College can provide help and advice on funding your course and the wide range of grants and loans available to you.
Funding Part-time HE Courses
At the time of going to press we understand that eligible part-time students who start their degree from September 2012 will have access to loans for tuition costs and will not have to pay up-front, as long as it’s their first degree and they are studying for at least 25% of a full time programme. Further information about what is available and how to apply will be available on www.direct.gov.uk or from Student Finance England: 0845 300 50 90.
Full-time Students
At the time of going to print, the Government will lend any eligible student the money to pay the university or college tuition costs. Students from families with incomes of up to £25,000 will be entitled to a more generous student maintenance grant of up to £3,250 and those from families with incomes up to £42,000 will be entitled to a partial grant. Maintenance loans will be available to all eligible full-time students, irrespective of income. Further information about what is available and how to apply will be available on www.direct.gov.uk, or from Student Finance England on 0845 300 50 90.
Disabled Students’ Allowance
The Disabled Students’ Allowance is a grant to help with the extra costs a full or part-time student may face as the direct result of a disability (including an ongoing health condition, mental health condition or specific learning difficulty such as dyslexia). The amount you can get isn’t affected by your household income, and the allowances do not have to be repaid.
Extra Financial Help
If you get into financial difficulties while studying, or find yourself facing extra costs in completing your course, then help may be available from the college’s or your partner university’s Access to Learning Fund. You should apply to Student Services on 01756 708 008.

There are a range of publications available containing details of scholarships, grants and other sources of funding available to you.Information can be obtained from Craven College Student Services or the Careers Guidance Service.

Higher Level Qualifications ExplainedWith so much choice and with different levels of qualifications it can be difficult to decide the best route for you. The chart opposite will help you work out the level at which you are currently studying and the level you are aiming for. Course levels are indicated throughout the directory.
HNC and HND
If you have already achieved an HNC or HND you may be able to use the credit from these to move on to a Foundation degree or BA top-up. If you are unsure about this do come and ask us for advice.
Foundation Degree – Level 5 – 240 credits
A Foundation degree combines both academic and vocational skills through collaboration between employers and college. The full-time route is studied over two years. Part-time options are usually over three years.
A completed Foundation degree (240 credits) is the equivalent to the first two years of an Honours degree which are normally packaged into modules of 20 credits each. In this way you build and accumulate credits towards the final degree. After completing the Foundation degree you can enter or continue in employment or choose a top-up degree to achieve a full degree.
BA/BSc (Hons) Top-up Degree – 360 credits
Top-up degrees are ideal if you have successfully completed your HND or FD and want to progress to a full degree through one year study or over two years part-time.
Professional Qualifications
Employers and universities appreciate the value of professional qualifications such as the AAT, CIM or ILM which are recognised and shaped by industry and are often an alternative route into a specific profession. These higher level courses are included in this directory to enable you to make an informed choice regarding this important step in your professional career.

NVQs enable those in employment to use all their current, relevant work experiences as evidence towards a higher level qualification, demonstrating how higher level knowledge and skills are applied in the workplace.

Access to Higher Education Diploma (OCN) Level 3Full-time 1 year
This course is designed for mature students with the life skills but no formal qualifications to gain entry into university. It is also suitable for mature students who already have the qualifications for entry into higher education but who wish to refresh their skills and knowledge in preparation for studying at university. You will gain both study skills and subject knowledge to enable you to become an effective HE student. You will spend time studying alongside other students with life experience who have goals and aspirations similar to your own.
This course is run between September and June and although full-time allows time for family commitments and part-time work.
You can study for pathways to; Education Professions, Health and Social Care Professions, Humanities, Social Sciences, Vocational Sciences.
Course Content
Biological Defences, Care Practice, Care Studies, Counselling, Criminology, English Language and Literature, Human Physiology, Psychology, Sociology, Study Techniques.

Career Progression
– Upon successfully completing the Access Programme, you can move directly onto the first year of a Combined Studies course (validated by the University of Bradford) at Craven College or apply for a wide variety of degree programmes
– You may wish to use this course as an entry to another degree programme at a university of your choice
– It may be possible for those interested in a career in teaching in further education to progress to an appropriate teaching qualification at Craven College

Previously Technician Stage, the diploma stage is the final step to achieving a qualification that is recognised as the gold standard for Accounting Technicians, and can be compared to training at degree level. Employers have confidence in Level 4 students – they know successful AAT students have been through a sophisticated, independently controlled assessment process and will be able to work competently.
On completion, you will gain exemption from certain stages of the following senior level qualifications: ICAEW and ICAS Chartered Accountant, Chartered Certified Accountant, industry based and public sector CIMA.

Animal Welfare and Management Fd Level 5 Validated by York St John University – Full-time 2 years, part-time 3 years
This programme is designed to provide you with a comprehensive understanding of animal management to equip you with the necessary knowledge to assess the welfare needs of animals. It enables you to acquire practical animal management skills and devise appropriate management strategies pertinent to the animal sector. It focuses on the health and welfare aspects of animal management plus employment in the ancillary industries.

Aviation Management: Service Sector BA (Hons) (Top-up) Level 6Subject to Validation by the University of Bradford – Full-time 1 year, part-time 2 years
This is the final year of the BA (Hons) degree to top up your Foundation degree or Higher National diploma and builds upon prior knowledge of the aviation sector. Aimed at those aspiring to middle and senior management within this dynamic and expanding sector, it focuses on the challenges involved in managing predominantly intangible products. It is suited to those with tourism, passenger transport or with relevant industrial experience. You will develop in-depth knowledge and awareness of the service sector, and the ability to demonstrate organisational and business skills, personal and transferable skills and attributes to a high level and will gain experience in creativity, innovation and problem solving which will enable you to demonstrate and deliver a quality interface with clients and colleagues.
All our students have the opportunity to undertake private (PPL) and commercial flight training (CPL) on site with our partnership organisation Multiflight.

This qualification is specifically designed for Registered Care Managers. If you are a Registered Care Manager or Deputy Care Manager within a care setting and have completed an NVQ in Care at Level 3, or if you are entering the profession in a senior role, this is the course for you.
The course is tailored towards the management aspect of your role and also the delivery of care with the support of others in a care environment. It will help you maximise your potential in your role.

This qualification is achieved by attending a three hour group induction and a three hour support session at the commencement of your course. The aim of this course is to prepare students for a successful career as a multi- media make-up artist. Young Children’s Learning and Development BA (Top-up) Level 6Subject to Validation by the University of Bradford – Part-time 2 years
The BA (Hons) Young Children’s Learning and Development (top-up) programme offers a progression route for graduates from the Foundation degree in Young Children’s Learning and Development (or equivalent). The course builds on your knowledge gained from the Foundation degree and experiences in the workplace. It includes the study of modules worth a total of 120 credits at Level 6.
The course aims to deepen your critical understanding and reflective skills in relation to children’s development and learning. It encourages reflection on personal skills and their development in order to enhance your ability to lead, practice and promote children’s learning and development.
There are two possible progression routes after the course. The first option is to enrol on the Early Years Professional Status (long pathway). The alternative is to achieve Qualified Teacher Status or PGCE (Primary).
Modules Include
Dissertation, Managing and Leading in the Early Years, Personal and Professional Development, Theories of Children’s Learning and Development, Working with Children and Families in 21st Century Britain.
Entry Requirements
Interview plus one of the following:– Level 3 qualification in Child Care Learning
and Development– 240 credit points from Foundation degree
or relevant HNC qualification
Applicants must have working experience with young children in a child care setting.
