News from Cranmore Parish CouncilThis month’s news centres mainly on the fayre on Sunday 11th August. There are still spaces for stalls available so if you wish to book a stall please call Ann on 01749 880512. The next Fayre Meeting is on Monday 8th July at 6.15pm; just before the Parish Council Meeting. The committee would welcome extra members as help is still in short supply. Money raised this year will go towards the renewal of the Memorial Hall roof; some £35,000 is required. The hall is an integral part of our village and it needs all hands on deck to find funds to keep it in working order. The raffle and tombola are a value source of funds for the fayre and our gallant volunteers, Nicola Fernandez McEwan and Mary Boston will be collecting door-to-door on the evenings of 2nd and 5th August. You can also take items for the tombola, raffle or bric-a-brac stall to the hall on the morning of the 10th August together with any cake donations. Apologies for any inconvenience but, due to our increased awareness of our environment, we are trying to avoid the use of plastic and would prefer glass and tin only this year for the tombola. Raffle tickets are now available and if you are able to take some to sell on then please contact John Reakes on 01749 880388. And last but not least, we are fortunate enough to have a defibrillator in the entrance to the Memorial Hall and it is important that we know how to use it. To that effect, there will be a training session in the hall on Saturday 20th July at 10am; everyone welcome.

The way we wereThe Way We Were weekend at The East Somerset Railway returns with a bang this August Bank Holiday weekend with entertainments and displays to give you, your family and friends a fab day out in Cranmore. There will be plenty of re-enactors, both military and civilian. The Land Army girls will try and recruit you for a life on the land, and a 1940s Victory Stores will give you a glimpse of what shopping was like during wartime Britain. Make sure your papers are up to date if you happen to meet some German soldiers! We are keen for you to join in by dressing up in 1930s to 1950s period costume. If you can demonstrate how to make do and mend; cook a Woolton pie perhaps, or bring along a vintage car or motorbike we would love to hear from you. On Sunday afternoon the fabulous Harlem Rhythm Cats will entertain with their Boogie Woogie and Blues music. Find a spot to listen and enjoy – or better still, join in and dance! For children there’s a Punch & Judy on Monday and you can try our giant Snake and Ladders game or have a go at ‘hoola hoop’ or quoits. For refreshments head to the Whistlestop café where you can join in with the street party and savour some traditional fare. Follow us on our Facebook page, The Way We Were at East Somerset Railway or contact [email protected] 01749 681640.

Friendship CircleOn Thursday 27th June we celebrated Friendship Circle with a delicious tea followed by wonderful musical entertainment by the children from All Hallows School directed by Mr Michael Castle. They amazed us all with their singing and instrument talent and we thank them for coming and giving us so much pleasure.

On the farm, July 2019 The latest farming news from David Corp of Merryfield FarmThe period of wet weather in June helped the grass crops to bulk up well for silage and grazing. The wheat is in ear and looking good and the barley at Dean farm has already started to turn (change colour) for harvesting later in the month. As part of the changes to the support payments, farmers are being encouraged to plant nectar-rich seed mixes around the edges of the fields rather than crops, to encourage bees, insects and birds. Six-metre margins are preferred, but they can be wider. These areas will be managed with late cutting and no fertiliser or sprays, simply to encourage wildlife. It’s a voluntary scheme but payments are available to mitigate the losses from not cropping the land and to encourage participation. Inspections from the Rural Payments Agency will make sure the correct species of flowers are grown, rather than just letting the land revert to weeds. Land can also be taken out of production and ‘reverted ‘ to low input grassland. The uptake of these schemes is expected to be high and both Cranmore and Mells estates are taking part. We do the contracting on both estates so will be involved in the planting and management of the margins. Tree planting is also going to be part of the future in a big push to help take carbon out of the atmosphere. Ash dieback is affecting trees on the farm. They were late coming into leaf this year and have produced extra leaves at the growing tips to try to overcome the disease. Chris, who manages the woodland at Dean farm, reckons they will die in a few years, some are already dying. In future, care will be needed to choose the correct tree species to plant in different areas, to replace all the Ash trees and to make sure new trees thrive in the future.
