Entrepreneurs, your time has come!

Producers for the acclaimed CBC reality show “Dragons’ Den” are touring the country, holding auditions for small busi-ness entrepreneurs and inven-tors, to find participants to walk boldly into the dragons’ den. And that tour is coming to Cran-brook, Feb.

On “Dragons’ Den, selected

participants pitch business and investment ideas to a panel of five venture capitalists — the Dragons — in the hope of secur-ing business financing and part-nerships. Successful pitchers will have a chance to earn real investment — from the Dragons’ own pockets.

Molly Middleton, Senior Pro-ducer for “Dragons’ Den, spoke to the Daily Townsman on Thursday, and said the show

likes to switch up audition loca-tions from year to year.

“We always try to go to new places — every year we add a couple of different cities and drop other cities,” Middleton said. “If you keep going year after year to the same places you deplete the entrepreneurs, be-cause there’s not that much of a transient population.”

TRE VOR CR AWLEYThe City of Cranbrook is looking

for a community organization to step up and take the lead on Canada Day celebrations.

Connect Church has organized the event for the past two years, which the city calls the largest and most success-ful events the city has ever seen, how-ever, the church isn’t able to do it again this year.

The issue was raised at Monday evening’s city council by Cranbrook’s CAO Wayne Staudt.

On occasion, there have been years where the City has not been able to

secure a community group to run the event. During those years, previous councils have directed staff to provide a smaller scale celebration that has included a Music in the Park event during the day at Rotary Park, fol-lowed by a standalone fireworks show at Moir Park.

Staff are prepared to host this type of event if required, however, despite the lack of a community organization to organize an event, the city is still pursuing grant funding from the pro-vincial and federal governments.

T r e vo r C r aw l e yCranbrook city

council is still looking at the possibility of having outdoor seasonal patios for next spring and summer season, as staff is currently looking at drafting a bylaw to allow for it.

The proposed draft bylaw will allow busi-nesses in the downtown core to have outdoor seasonal patios on pub-lic lands.

Rob Veg, the senior community planner for the City of Cranbrook, provided a brief update to council at a meeting last Monday evening.

“We’re going to tar-get a May start, but if not, it’ll be a shorter season—June through, say, October, and then the second year, we can look at the May - Octo-ber window,” Veg said. “It just gives us a bit of a window because we’re not sure what other pri-orities council might give staff and what

might come through the door.”

The matter was last brought before council in December 2015, upon which staff were directed to look into seasonal outdoor patio policies in other munic-ipalities such as Kim-berley, Nelson, Fernie and Kelowna.

Each community had some formal pro-gram in place to allow seasonal patios, wheth-er it be permitted on sidewalks, on-street or both.

A council report notes that the loss of on-street parking would be a potential issue. There are currently 448 me-tered parking stalls in the downtown core and 329 off-street city stalls.

“Actual impacts to parking will depend on level of up-take for on-street patios should they be allowed; howev-er, staff currently feels that the impacts from the reduction in parking

will be outweighed by the positive benefits the downtown core could see through the installa-tion of patios,” read the city report. “It is antici-pated that should on-street patios be permis-sible, individual busi-ness would be required to determine if they wanted to forgo the parking in exchange for the patio.”

Any seasonal patios must also comply with Liquor Control and Li-censing Branch regula-tions, as individual businesses would need to provide proof of ap-proval from the branch before the city allows a seasonal patio.

The report con-cludes that seasonal pa-tios would be a boon for the city and the down-town core.

“Based on the pre-liminary research find-ing, staff feels a bylaw for outdoor seasonal patios on public lands would be beneficial to the City’s downtown business community and help promote revi-talization in the down-town core,” it read.

The issue should hopefully be revisited by March for a draft bylaw that council can look at and consult with stakeholders.

“What we’re hoping to do is bring that draft bylaw in front of council in March and then do some consultation with stakeholders, likely the DBA [Downtown Busi-ness Association] and then as part of that pro-cess, we;re going to be required to do some public notification for the city bylaw,” said Veg.

“So there will be some opportunity for us to finally get it out and it will be in front of coun-cil for reviewing, so there should be some buzz around it.”

Who are the biggest people in town? They are Wanda and Wodsworth — eight feet tall and ten feet tall respectively and they are snowpeople created by Bob Learmonth of Cranbrook. The gargantuan, below zero pair are also asking for your vote, at Banff/Lake Louis “Snowman Showdown!” Cranbrook’s Wodsworth and Wanda are entered there, along with dozens of others of their kind, and the public is encouraged to vote for their favourite snowperson. One rewarding aspect of this process, she said, was seeing the breadth of entrepreneurship that ex-ists in this country.

“I have to say after 10 years of Dragons’ Den, you would think we’d have seen it all. But we’re joyously surprised every year that Canada is such an amazing entrepreneurial place. And just when you think there couldn’t be anymore, people come out of every-where with fantastic ideas.”

The popular show itself has helped bring this ad-venturous business spirit to the forefront of people’s minds.

“We’re proud to be one of the only such plat-forms,” Middleton said. “Where else can an entrepre-neur — especially in the regional areas outside the big cities — where else can you show off your small business or product on a national level without pay-ing gazillions of dollars for ad time.

“So to have a million Canadians every week watching the show and seeing what’s out there is great exposure for anybody.”

In Cranbrook, auditions take place Wednesday, Feb. 17, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at the Multipur-pose Room at Western Financial Place.

Applications to audition are now available online, at cbc.ca/dragonsden/auditions. “But we always encourage everyone to apply in person,” Middleton said.

The online application and the hard copy appli-cation are the same. However, it does take a few minutes to fill out, though, so producers recommend that pitchers do so online in advance of the audition.

Sometimes pitchers may have technical difficul-ties or only learn of the audition at the last minute and aren’t able to complete the online application. If that’s the case, no problem. Hard copies will avail-able at Western Financial Place on the day of the audition. Everyone with an idea — whether it’s at the concept stage or a full-fledged business — is encour-aged to come on out.

Since there’s no RSVP process, the producers can’t tell whose coming, or how many will show up.

“It’s first come first serve,” Middleton said, adding that, to be clear, the Dragons themselves will not there.

“We just like to warn people. Because the magic of the show is that the Dragons don’t know anything about you until you walk down those stairs. So the producers are spread out across the country doing auditions. We set up a little room, and you pitch the producers just like you do to the Dragons.

“We expect that people wil have some form of presentation prepared, and we expect that people will put the same passion and enthusiasm into it in front of the producers as they would in front of the Dragons.”

“Because this is it. You get one shot at pitching to the producers. And then the next time is we will call you and say ‘you’re coming to Toronto.’ And we’ll help you plan your presentation for in front of the Dragons.”

So the pressure is on. But even so, the audition process gives the pitchers a chance to work out their chops, get their presentation into shape.

“At the same time, at least it’s just the producers and not the Dragons,” Middleton said. “If you’re not completely ready, if you don’t know the value of your company, etc, then don’t sweat it. Don’t let that stop you from auditioning. You’ve got nothing to lose by coming out.”

Auditions for “Dragons Den” take place Wednes-day, Feb. 17, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at Western Finan-cial Place, 1777 2 St North (Multipurpose Room)

The current Dragons on Dragons Den include:• Jim Treliving, co-owner of Boston Pizza and Mr.

Lube.• Michael Wekerle, founder and CEO of Differ-

with Club Monaco and Joe Fresh• Manjit Minhas, CEO of Minhas Brewery.• Michele Romanow, internet entrepreneur.

For the townsmanIn the wake of the

deaths of five persons in an avalanche near Mc-Bride on Jan. 29, 2016, the BC Coroners Ser-vice and Avalanche Canada are joining to stress the need for pre-paredness for those

heading into the back-country this winter.

A total of 17 snow-mobilers were in the Mount Renshaw Alpine Recreation Site when the avalanche hit. First responders, the Coro-ners Service and Ava-lanche Canada all note

that the majority of groups had proper res-cue equipment with them, and that the im-pressive effort made by those on scene to res-cue themselves and others undoubtedly prevented the loss of more lives.

However, notes Gilles Valade, Executive Director of Avalanche Canada, even better than knowing to re-spond to an avalanche incident is knowing how to prevent one from occurring in the first place. “Avalanche

safety education is es-sential for all winter backcountry recre-ationists,” said Valade. “Basic skills, such as recognizing avalanche terrain and not expos-ing multiple people to overhead hazard, make a big difference in re-ducing the consequenc-es of an event.”

Equipment alone is not enough, noted Chief Coroner Lisa Lapointe. Three of the five fatali-ties from the Renshaw

avalanche had de-ployed avalanche air-bags designed to “float” someone along the sur-face of a moving ava-lanche. But the airbags were ineffective in this case because the vic-tims were in a gully at the bottom of a slope – an area where the de-bris flow of the ava-lanche is too constrict-ed.

The vast majority of fatal avalanches are triggered by the victim

or someone in the vic-tim’s party. Avalanche Skills Training courses teach proper trip plan-ning, terrain selection and safe travel tech-niques, which can be effective in preventing accidents.

Information about current safety condi-tions, as well as training courses and equipment needs can be found at Avalanche Canada’s website, www.ava-lanche.ca.

Staff have submitted the annual funding re-quest to Canadian Heri-tage - Celebrate Canada, towards a full celebra-tion. If successful with this grant, the funds can be allocated to an orga-nizing group if one is found.

Staudt noted that there is usually $5,000 that comes in for grant funding with an addi-tional $2,500 that the city gives out annually.

“So there is enough money to get started, but it is not enough money to do the type of job that Connect Church and others have done in the past,” Staudt said. “You need a bit more money than that, proba-bly double that, to do a good job.”

Getting an outside organization to run the celebration would be ideal, he continued.

“You need a lot of volunteers and you need a lot more money than $7,500. It doesn’t just happen with one week of planning; you need to start planning much in advance.”

Staudt also reaf-firmed the city staff’s desire to keep the cele-bration at Moir Park, rather than at other lo-cations in the past, such as the College of the Rockies track field.

“The reason we have moved it to Moir Park is because of the fire-works, primarily. It’s a safe place to do the fire-works as opposed to some of the other op-tions we’ve used in the past. There’s facilities

there, washroom facili-ties and the parking lot,” Staudt said.

“It’s a large enough space that you can do other things up there, so it’s not required that it be at Moir Park, but from staff’s perspective, it’s the best place that we’ve ever had.”

If it’s one thing that could raise some inter-est about a potential Canada Day celebra-tion, it’s the fact that there’s almost $10,000 of unused fireworks that weren’t used last year due to a fireworks ban stemming from wildfire concerns.

PAGE 6 FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 5, 2016

L ent begins early this year. Lent is the 40–day–long season of reflection, penitence and self–examination as

we prepare for Easter. It begins on Ash Wednesday, which falls on February 10 this year, and continues through Holy Sat-urday on March 26.

Now if you were to count up the days on the calendar, you’d find that there are actually 46 days from February 10 to March 26. We call it a 40–day season, how-ever, because we don’t count the Sundays of these weeks. The church has always considered Sundays to be “little Easters” which are days of celebrat-ing resurrection and life.

In centuries past, people would mark the penitence of Lent during the week and on Sundays they would take a break from fasting. One of the ironies of contemporary times is that people tend to mark Lent in church on Sundays while generally ignor-ing it during the week.

The date of Easter, and therefore Lent, is not fixed. Easter is a movable feast which is based on the lunar calendar. Eas-ter can fall anywhere between March 22 and April 25 in the Western Church. This year, Easter comes very early—March 27.

The church understands that Lent is a time to turn afresh to God. We begin on Ash Wednesday, so named because we use ashes to mark our foreheads with the sign of the cross. We remember our mor-tality with the phrase, “Remember you are dust and to dust you shall return.”

That practice has some of its roots in one of the stories of creation in which God makes human beings out of the dust of the earth (Genesis 2:7). Let’s be clear that the story was never meant to be taken literal-ly—no more than we take it literally when

Joni Mitchell sang that “we are stardust.” The heart of that story in Genesis is that God takes a little bit of dirt and breathes into it, and gives life to this soil creature—which is what the Hebrew word “adam” means. It was never a proper name.

It’s one of those wonderful Biblical images that remind us that we are bound together not only with all of earth’s crea-tures, but that our web of life includes the very dirt on which we walk. Theologian Norman Wirzba writes, “God fashions the first human being by taking the dirt of the ground into his hands, holding it so close

that it can share in the di-vine breath, and inspiring it with the freshness of life. It is only as the ground is suf-fused with God’s intimate, breathing presence that human life is possible at all.”

We were talking about that in a recent Bible Study, and someone said, “Whenev-er I hear about God making us out of the earth, it always reminds me that we are grounded in God.” I thought to myself what a wonderful way of visioning this story in a new fresh way. An ancient Bibli-cal symbol is filled with new meaning.

This is how the Bible has been used throughout its life. We continue to hear new meanings in ancient texts. These sto-ries continue to speak to us on so many different levels. Even though our scientific knowledge has vastly increased, even though we know so much more about the origins of life, this metaphor of God shap-ing us from dirt speaks to us of being grounded in God in intimate and deep ways. The ancient metaphor continues to have power in shaping the ways we think about God and the ways we think about ourselves.

Made of the earth … grounded in God.This also enriches our understanding

of Lent. While Lent is a penitential sea-son, it is not a season for us to wallow in guilt. Rather, Lent is a time for us to reflect on our inner life and how that inner life is shaped by God’s life and reflected in all of our relationships—with God, with each other, with all of creation.

Lent, in other words, is about transfor-mation. Richard Rohr comments that so much of what passes for religion in North America is in reality not much more than “religious motivational talks”—as if trying harder will help us to reinvigorate our in-terior life.

Jesus, on the other hand, never gave inspirational or motivational talks. “Jesus is much more concerned about shaking your foundations, giving you an utterly alternative self–image, world–image, and God–image, and thus reframing your en-tire reality.”

Lent is a time for us to be grounded once more in the love of God. That’s the whole purpose of “giving something up for Lent.” We give up the baggage and illu-sions and distractions of our life, and surrender ourselves more deeply to what’s more profoundly true and life–giv-ing.

This Lent, I will remember that I am dust, and to dust I will return. I will re-member that my life is but a fleeting shad-ow in the life of the universe. I will also remember more profoundly that my brief time is grounded in the Creator.

Join us Ash Wednesday at 7 pm at Christ Church if you wish to make a new commitment to being grounded in God’s love.

“The weather the last few days has been all that could be desired, the first touch of real hot summer weather we have had so far.” – Cranbrook Her-ald June 15, 1916

T he winter of 1915-16 was a bit of a rough one in the East Kootenay.

By February 10, 1916, the snowfall in Cranbrook reached a total of ten feet (three me-tres). Heck, even Victoria suf-fered a snowfall of 46.4 inches (118 cm) during the first week of the month.

The middle of February saw the weather turn to some-thing resembling downright balmy; snow disappeared and the water ran freely. March saw a return to cool tempera-tures, warming somewhat in April, when it was noted that the small creek running through Cranbrook from the marsh was higher than it had been for many years.

Thus, when the “first touch of real hot of summer weath-er” appeared, the snow may have already been gone from Cranbrook, but the large quantity of snow still remain-ing in the mountains was not and by the third week of June, Cranbrook was a reasonably dry but totally isolated city.

The Elk River took out roads and railway tracks to the east, as did Moyie Lake to the west. The surging St. Mary River washed away two spans of the bridge at the St. Eugene Mission leaving it unsafe and over 1,000 sandbags were re-quired to save the Wycliffe Bridge although it sank five feet at one end rendering it impassable.

The young communities of Marysville and Kimberley had not yet witnessed the un-leashed power of Mark Creek, a fact that changed with a ven-geance on June 18, 1916.

Four years earlier the Sulli-van Mine by the Consolidated Mining & Smelting Co. of Can-ada Ltd. dammed the creek in order to provide power for both the mine and the con-centrator mill; 50 feet (15 me-tres) long and 20 feet (6 me-tres) high, it proved adequate until that warm Monday in June when the structure was overpowered by the rushing waters.

melting snow, the creek be-came a violent flow, altering the landscape of all it contact-ed beginning with the Sullivan Mine powerhouse and then undermining and destroying creek-side houses and out-buildings along its route.

Mr. and Mrs. White and their children — a four year old girl and a two year old boy — lived in Marysville, near the edge of Mark Creek.

That is to say, they lived in Marysville near the edge of Mark Creek until Monday, June 19, 1916. On that particu-lar morning Mr. White arose at 4:30 a.m. as was his custom and discovered that they were living in Mark Creek, com-pletely surrounded by verita-ble sea of raging water already beginning to wash over the floor of the house. Immedi-ately seeking help he plunged into the stream which carried him a great distance before he could make dry land and seek assistance for his family.

Inside of an hour the ma-jority of residents of Marys-ville were at the scene. All those who tried to wade to the residence were forced back by the current. Albert Hall nearly drowned while attempting to cross on a homemade raft. Mr. Keer, assisted by a number of others, hitched up his horses and headed to the St. Mary River in search of a boat as the creek rose unremittingly until, to the horror of all, the house slowly became unlodged and began to float downstream to-wards the falls.

The lean-to kitchen tore away in a burst of splintering chinaware and flying pots and pans as the screams of Mrs. White and the children car-ried across the waters.

It would have been over in a very short time had not the building jammed among some half-submerged stumps, settling with one end three feet in the water with Mrs. White holding the children on

a table at the raised end of the house.

By now a boat had arrived and Messrs Lundin and Hawkes took to the water only to hit a stump and capsize. They clung to the craft until both they and the boat were hauled back ashore with ropes.

Billy Evans, a local pros-pector, and Provincial Police Constable Shipman took the boat 100 yards further up-stream and, with 20 men managing a safety rope, head-ed downstream towards the house, valiantly yet ineffec-tively fighting the vagaries of the current.

Constable Shipman left the boat in order to position the rope around a half-submerged stump for greater control. He stood waist high in the bitter cold water while Billy and the boat jockeyed ever so slowly to the stranded family, arriv-ing over an hour later.

As Billy disembarked and entered the precariously perched house, Constable

Shipman was overpowered by the current and drawn under, only managing to save himself by clinging to a fencepost.

As Billy appeared from within the building with Mrs. White and the children a huge cheer went up from the crowd.

Still, it was a close run thing as Billy continually sig-naled the men on the rope to ever-so-slowly haul them against the current to safety.

It took 15 minutes to reach the stranded Constable Ship-man, frigid with cold and what seemed an eternity to finally to reach men forming a human chain in the water to guide the boat to shore.

Mrs. White, the children, Billy Evans and Constable Shipman were rushed to the Central Hotel and attended to with great care.

There is no record of those involved suffering any long term effects nor any record of commendations of bravery in what must stand as one of the greatest co-operative rescues in local history.

The flood of 1916 washed away roads and railway tracks throughout the district.

During the 2014-15 Western Hockey League campaign, fans in Cran-brook watched as goal-tender Wyatt Hoflin re-wrote the Kootenay Ice record book.

The native of Spruce Grove, Alta., calmly and quietly went about his business, setting fran-chise records for wins in a season (36), appear-ances in a season (67), minutes played in a sea-son (3,848) and consec-utive games played by a goaltender (29).

Now in his final year of junior eligibility, Hof-lin is breaking out the ink and preparing to sign his name to yet an-other page of the Koote-nay Ice record book.

With 264 saves, the 20-year-old will surpass former Ice goaltender Nathan Lieuwen for the franchise all-time re-cord for saves (4,188).

“Obviously, with a couple better games here and there, it would have come a lot sooner,” Hoflin said with a smile, Thursday afternoon prior to practice at West-ern Financial Place.

To have blocked 4,188 pucks and been able to tell the tale is an impressive feat all its own. What makes Hof-lin’s efforts all the more impressive is the time in which he has done it.

As it stands, the 6-foot-1, 182-pound puck-stopper has ap-peared in 148 career

WHL games, making 3,925 saves along the way.

Lieuwen, who is in the midst of his fourth professional season in the Buffalo Sabres sys-tem, made his 4,188 saves over 178 career appearances -- 30 more outings than where Hof-lin stands now.

“My first year, it was a learning curve,” Hoflin said. “I learned a lot of life lessons. It kind of just built as I came through my career. Last year, it was one opportunity after another to show-case what I had to offer.”

Reliable between the pipes and easy going off the ice, Hoflin continues to showcase his abilities this season, as he sits fourth in the entire WHL with 1,168 saves to his credit.

With only 21 games

remaining in his final WHL campaign, Hoflin won’t make it to Lieuw-en’s franchise record 178 appearances, but there’s no questioning he will get to the saves marker.

While the saves re-cord remains a few games away, Hoflin has a pair of personal mile-stones to look forward to en route and before his team’s season-long, five-game homestand comes to a close Feb. 12.

With 148 appearanc-es notched in his belt, Hoflin is about to hit the 150-game plateau, a mark reached by only one other goaltender in Kootenay Ice franchise history -- Lieuwen.

On the way to hitting 150 games, Hoflin will strike the 8,000 min-utes-played mark. Again, a rare achievement for Kootenay Ice goalten-

ders, with Lieuwen (9,781 minutes in 178 games) and Jeff Glass (8,206 minutes in 143 games) the only other two to reach that stage.

“It’s huge for me,” Hoflin said. “For where I came from when I start-ed here and the goalies that have been here, for me to get as much time in the net as I have, it’s a huge accomplishment for me and the hard work I’ve put in.”

Upon his arrival, Hoflin held the backup role behind Mackenzie Skapski, yet another professionally-accom-plished netminder who Hoflin went on to by-pass in many major sta-tistical categories.

With his WHL career slowly winding down, the student has now be-come the teacher, not only for 17-year-old backup Declan Hobbs, but for a youth-laden Ice squad that includes

10 first-year players.“He’s been a great ex-

ample for our young players, not just for De-clan, but all of our young players, on the things you need to do to stay in shape and stay healthy throughout the course of a year,” said Luke Pierce, head coach of the Koote-nay Ice, Thursday after-noon. “His work after games, after practices, you name it, he takes real good care of himself off the ice and it’s a credit to him and obviously a big reason why he’s been able to reach those types of milestones.

“He tries not to get too caught up in it. I think he does a good job of staying pretty even-keeled. He’s got that de-meanour in practice, too. You don’t see him get fired up very effort. He’s pretty calm and emotions don’t go all over the place.”

Over the course of

four WHL seasons in Cranbrook, Hoflin has compiled a regular sea-son record of 53-72-2-4, along with four shut-outs. On top of that, he’s appeared in 15 WHL post-season outings, with a record of 7-3-2.

If not for the overall struggles of his young club this season, that ca-reer record might be a lot shinier these days.

“He’s certainly a pas-sionate guy,” Pierce said. “He’s let some of his teammates know throughout different games this year when he’s unhappy. Like any passionate player, he’s going to have that.”

There’s plenty of ex-perience in those pads and Hobbs, in particu-lar, has made sure to take note.

“I watch how he plays the game and how he approaches it, prepa-ration and stuff like that,” Hobbs said.

“He’s really calm in the net, nothing really triggers his mind to go off in different places. He keeps a strong head…He controls the game real well with whistles and he knows when to play the puck and when not to. That comes with experience.”

Selected in the sec-ond round (37th overall) of the 2010 WHL Bantam Draft, Hoflin has deliv-ered on that potential.

There’s no arguing his experience or track record since his draft day. A sizeable chunk of the Kootenay Ice record book proves Hoflin’s worth, and that chunk is about to get a little bit bigger.

Hoflin and the Koo-tenay Ice (8-39-4-0) wel-come the Red Deer Reb-els (32-16-1-2) to West-ern Financial Place Fri-day night for a 7 p.m. puck drop.

CLEVELAND - John-ny Manziel’s ex-girl-friend told police the Cleveland Browns quar-terback hit her during an argument last weekend in Texas and said he ap-peared to be on drugs.

Fort Worth police re-leased a report Thurs-day that provided the first details of the alter-cation Saturday night between Manziel and Colleen Crowley. Man-ziel is being investigated for a possible assault on Crowley.

She told police he

was “aggressive” toward her after they were out with friends at the Zaza Hotel in Dallas. She said he struck her, including once in the left ear be-fore they drove back to her Fort Worth apart-ment.

Crowley said she later fled her apartment

in an attempt to get away from Manziel.

The Browns released a statement Tuesday saying they were trou-bled by Manziel’s “con-tinual involvement in incidents.” The team plans to release him in March.

ARIES (March 21-April 19) Your creativity comes from an inner sense of self. Your imagi-nation creates many ideas, but you might choose not to share them. These flights of fancy are important to your sense of well-being. Take a stronger role in your professional environ-ment. Tonight: Lead others. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You might have the desire to do something very different. A change in scenery proves to be beneficial to many people, including you. Take off, and you will gain a new perspective on whatever ails you; it also will help you to relax. Tonight: Take off as fast as you can. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) One-on-one relating will re-veal a lot of information about a higher-up. You might want to check out the facts to gauge how much is really just gossip. You won’t want to work with false information. A loved one wants you to change your plans. Tonight: Let the party begin.

CANCER (June 21-July 22) Bask in the popularity of the moment. Whether you’re mak-ing plans or closing a business deal, you have many options. You know that this kind of diver-sity does not happen frequently. Take advantage of the moment. Be careful with someone who is very controlling. Tonight: Out. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You could be left to complete everyone else’s errands. Since you tend to complete a lot quickly, you’ll be out enjoying the next few days before you know it. Ask yourself how many times you have left details un-finished for others to complete. Tonight: The party goes on. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Others will lure you into a late lunch or an early departure from work. Often you are too re-sponsible to leave work undone, but today is different. Be careful with a new person you meet who might be very appealing; he or she could be controlling. Tonight: Enjoy every moment. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) The best intentions could fall

to the wayside. You might feel nervous. Consider working from home, where you can relax and accomplish more. You are inspired by an associate who is full of ideas. Understand what it takes to get past an obstacle. Tonight: Play it low-key. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Your imagination feeds your ability to draw out others. Be careful if you sense that someone is becoming very controlling. Perhaps the person could be you. Others don’t ap-preciate this kind of behavior. Find out what’s motivating you. Tonight: Wish upon a star. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Your finances will play a big role in your plans. No one wants to accept limitations, especially you, but you probably will have to. Do not fight city hall; in-stead, choose to work with the situation. You’ll come up with a reasonable solution. Tonight: Make it your treat. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Beam in what you want. Your imagination will be fed through a conversation with a friend.

When you are talking to this person, you realize how many diverse opportunities you have. Decide to break the mold and head in a new direction. To-night: Let it happen. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Saying little and listening a lot paves the way to success. You might feel as if you can’t turn a situation around, no matter what you do. You can -- you just haven’t found the right path yet. Do not lose hope. Stay centered, and head toward your goal. Tonight: Not to be found. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You might not be aware of how much you inspire others. An old friendship could play a stronger role in your decisions. This per-son is very different from you and has chosen a different path in life. Do not judge him or her for this. Be accepting. Tonight: The life of the party. Dear Annie: My mother-in-law has a decor that was personalized for her by my husband’s long-term ex-girlfriend. Every time I go to her house, it’s the first thing I see and it really bothers me. The problem is, I don’t feel I can say anything to her because after all, it’s her house and the decorating was a gift. It’s not like I can tell her, “Hey, get rid of it.” The second problem is that my mother-in-law already feels that I’m a “jealous wife” due to our past conversations (which turned into arguments) when she told me about all of the things she caught her son doing with the ex and what a “cute girl” she was. It made me angry, and I said so. Any suggestions about the house decor? -- Bothered Wife Dear Bothered: Yes. Control your reaction and leave it alone. You are right that this is not your house and you have no decision-making control over what’s inside. Until Mom wants to redecorate, which can be pricey, speaking up about it will only confirm her opinion that you are jealous. And she won’t change anything. She might, in fact, enjoy your negative reaction. So don’t give her the satisfaction. Your mother-in-law may have made an emotional investment in the ex and isn’t ready to move on and accept that her son chose differently. Instead of silently fuming, try to win her over. Admire some of the decor (it will make her less attached to it as a knife to twist). Tell her how lovely her home is and that the ex did a good job. Ask Mom to help you out the next time you are shopping for a new lamp or arranging pictures on your walls. You can catch more flies with honey than vinegar. Dear Annie: Like the wife of “Embarrassed,” I am one of many with an incontinence problem. I thought I was keeping my house and myself odor free until my daughter told me otherwise. (My sense of smell has diminished.) First of all, she should use panty liners made for this problem and change them when necessary. Change any clothing that may get wet, and thoroughly rinse and dry them before putting in the hamper. Dispose of the pads in a closable plastic bag and when it’s full, place the bag in the outdoor garbage container. I no longer have the odor in my house or on my person. I was also embarrassed, but thankful my daughter told me. -- Anonymous Dear Anonymous: We heard from hundreds of incontinent readers and those who love them. Here’s a sample: From New York: I have a similar problem, and I wear the newer adult diapers that are thin and look like regular underpants. No one can tell. If she’s too embarrassed to buy them, her husband can do it for her. California: “Embarrassed” complained about the smell because his wife doesn’t launder her undies fast enough. How about if HE does the laundry? Coping With Aging: “Embarrassed” can use a deodorizing spray like Lysol. It’s not an accusation, he’s just taking care of it. She may appreciate his efforts, and begin to feel more comfortable coping with her situation. He can express his love (in sickness and in health) by giving her a little practical TLC. Benjamin Hugh McCaugherty“Ben”

1944 – 2016

It is with deep sorrow that the family of Benjamin McCaugherty announces his passing on Saturday, January 30, 2016 in Cranbrook, BC at 72 years of age.

Ben was born on January 23, 1944 in Kamloops, BC. He enjoyed playing hockey and baseball. He was an avid Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Blue Jays fan. Ben liked cars and was always known to have a ‘nice’ car. He loved his family and never missed a birthday or holiday. He sent cards and gifts for everybody – including the dogs! Ben loved to spend his afternoons having coffee with his sister Dawn and his brother-in-law Steve and visiting them every day – they ALWAYS spent time together. He always enjoyed the company of his family and friends.

Ben was predeceased by his father Don McCaugherty and his mother Isobel McCaugherty. He is survived by his son Todd McCaugherty; son Wade (Nova) Mcaugherty and granddaughter Mika and grandson Finley; his sister Dawn (Steve) Hunt; nephew Don (Robin) Hunt and their family and many cousins.

A private family service will be held for Benjamin.

We have stories to retell; We have pictures in our minds

We have love in our hearts,We can say good-bye to you

With tears in our eyes,But we will never, ever forget you.

April was born on June 19, 1977 in Cranbrook, BC. Her smile warmed the hearts of everyone around her. She loved the outdoors, gardening, fishing, and camping, making her a true summer person. April’s artistic talents have left us with keepsakes to treasure. The joy of her life was her children, she was so proud of the beautiful, loving people they are growing into. April touched many people during her short time with us – we are grateful for the time we did have.

April is survived by her parents Gail (Jim) Fead, Philip Hoy, daughters Paige and Sophie Cockell (father Sheldon), son Boone Margerum (father Jason), brother James (Sherisse) Hoy, sister Sarah (Frank) Fead, grandparents Bessie and Frank Rimell, Crawford and Vivian Clarke, adopted family Tricia and Blaine Cockell, Sheldon (Lindsay), Robyn (Jeff), Chris (Alesha), Calvin (Hayley) and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

A memorial service for April will be held on Wednesday, February 10, 2016 at the Elks Hall, 240 - Howard Street in Kimberley, BC at 2:00 pm.

“Depression is such a cruel punishment. There are no fevers, no rashes, no blood tests to send people scurrying in concern, just the slow erosion of self as insidious as cancer. And like cancer, it is essentially a solitary experience; a room in hell with only your name on the door.” Martha Manning

With so many advertising mediumsdividing the attention of potential customers, newspapers remain the most effective source for reaching

consumers. Why?Simply put, newspapers reach morepeople, more often. Highly portableand highly visible, newspaper ads go

with people and stay with them. That means your business is more likely

to be on their minds when they’re inthe market for related products or

services. When it comes to spendingyour advertising dollars, make the

choice that’s tried and true: newspaper advertising works harder for you.

Canadianscontinue to turn to DAILY NEWSPAPERS for breaking news, analysis of the day’s top events and entertaining content, according to the latest NADbank data. “Increased media compe-tition, besides raising the editorial bar at dailies, doesn’t change one crucial fact”, says media buyer Bruce Claassen, CEO of Genesis-Vizeum (Toronto) and chair of Aegis Media Canada. “Daily newspapers offer the same benefi ts they always have: the ability to reach customers quickly. Only with a daily paper are you able to choose to do an ad and run with it in two days, and reach a sizable portion of the population, in a fairly mass, fairly broad and fairly fast way. That’s a set of qualities very few other media can match.”
