A family of six will soon be able to move into a brand new home after being selected as the family partner for Cranbrook’s first Habi-tat for Humanity build.

David and Coreena Berry and their four children, Hanna, 11, Al-ysha, 10, Jordan, 8, and Samantha, 16 months, have been chosen as the successful applicants for the home, which will be built this summer in Sla-terville.

Started in Georgia in 1976, Habitat for Hu-manity is a non-profit organization that works alongside those in need to build houses for low-income families.

Two years ago, a Cranbrook group began working with West Koo-tenay Habitat for Hu-manity to support the first Habitat build in the East Kootenay.

The City of Cran-brook donated a piece of land in Slaterville, and different local orga-nizations pitched in fi-nancial aid to get the

project off the ground.Built using donated

time and materials, the home is a collaboration between the communi-ty and the selected fam-ily partner.

The family partner is a low-income family who would otherwise

not be able to afford to buy a home. In ex-change for promising 500 hours of sweat equi-ty on building their home and others in the community, the new homeowner gets an in-terest free, no down payment mortgage on

the home.A selection commit-

tee comprised of Jill Johnston, Gord Harder and Stu Deeks met with five families in Cran-brook over the past three months before se-lecting the Berry family for the project.

“It was a thorough and rigorous process,” said Jill Johnston. “The three of us approached the task from divergent points of view and we all agreed on the final rec-ommendation. We be-lieve the application process resulted in the selection of the best family partner for this project. The family were elated when we shared the news of the board’s approval.”

The board of direc-tors for Habitat for Hu-manity West Kootenay approved the family earlier this month.

Work on the Slater-ville lot has already begun, with project manager Darrell Bohmer of AJC Con-struction starting site preparation on April 5.

Plans are underway to unite Habitat affili-ates in Nelson, Castle-gar, Grand Forks and the Cranbrook group in one larger organization, Habitat for Humanity Southeast B.C. That would mean more builds in the East Koote-nay.

The Toastmasters Di-vision C Evaluation and International Speech contest is being held Saturday, April 12, at the College of the Rockies. The Cranbrook Phoenix Toastmasters and Cran-brook First Toastmas-

ters are hosting the event.

Toastmasters Inter-national is a nonprofit educational organiza-tion that operates clubs worldwide for the pur-pose of helping mem-bers improve their com-munication, public speaking, and leader-ship skills.

Roberta Rodgers, Chair of the co-host committee, explains

that clubs make up an area, areas make up a division, divisions a dis-trict, and districts a re-gion.

Division C covers the area from Kamloops down through the East Kootenay. Representa-tives of four areas in Di-vision C will be attend-ing. Each area can send two contestants, but some areas are sending speakers who are com-peteting in both the Evaluation and Interna-tional Speech catego-ries.

“The speakers select their own topics,” Rodg-ers said. “They’ll do a five to seven minute speech on that topic. Generally for the inter-national speech contest the speech is inspira-tional — there may be some humour involved

too. If the speaker goes on to a larger stage, an international stage, that speech is one that has a universal message that touches everyone.”

The evaluation con-test is a separate catego-ry. A Toastmasters Speech Evaluation Con-test is where there is a test speaker who gives a speech, and those en-tered in the contest all do an evaluation based on that speech.

“Everything in Toast-masters is evaluated,” Rodgers said. “That’s the way the people

progress in Toastmas-ters. Evaluations are done constructively, and evaluation contest is the opportunity for an individual to prove their evaluation skills.

Seven judges will be on hand for the event. One of the district’s offi-cers — Darryl Frolek — will serve as chief judge.

There will be one winner in the evaluation contest and one in the International Speech contest. Those winners will move forward, in May, to the District 21 conference and contest, which will be in Kelow-na. The winner of the District contest goes to the regional contest and from there, if they win, they go on to represent the Region at the Inter-national competition in Kuala Lumpur.

The public is invited to attend the event, which will take place Saturday, April 12, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., at the College of the Rockies Lecture Theatre (Room 250).

Local parents will join others around the world later this month in an attempt to break the Guinness world re-cord for the most dia-pers changed at one time.

On Saturday, April 26 at 10:30 a.m., parents and babies are invited to gather at the Cranbrook Family Connections building, next to the skate park, for the Great Cloth Diaper Change.

At 11 a.m., each baby will be changed into a fresh, commercially available cloth diaper, at the same time that simi-lar events are going on

at 240 locations in 15 countries around the world.

In 2013, the event saw 8,301 babies changed at the same time, setting a new world record. This year, the goal is to break that record.

But there’s another goal, said organizer Daleen Bybee.

“It’s really about awareness,” said Bybee. “Some families may have never considered cloth diapering and they may think it’s so much work. But we’re just here to show them that it can be fun and teach them whatever they want to know.”

There will be “cloth diapering gurus” on hand to answer ques-tions and explain what

cloth diapering means.“There are so many

neat options for cloth diapering, and it is a

good option for families if you can swing it,” said Bybee.

Participants will be given a bag of donated goodies to take home, including a pair of baby legs for the first 20 moms.

Door prizes will also be available, offering donated items from both local businesses such as Petra Naturally and A Touch of Whimsy, and other companies such as Apple Cheeks and Superior Soap Nuts.

As well as the diaper change, there will also be a baby-wearing fash-ion show during the event.

“Lots of families in

the area have questions about baby wearing – which carriers to use and how to do it safely. So this is just a great venue to do a fashion show, and we’ll teach moms about safe baby wearing and what carri-ers are available locally and which ones are the best options for fami-lies,” said Bybee.

Bybee, who owns Over The Rainbow Fam-ily Services, is organiz-ing the event alongside Megan Lescanec, owner of the Bumble Tree.

Families from both Cranbrook and Kimber-ley are encouraged to attend the event.

To meet the world re-

cord criteria, it must be one adult for each child. Participants must bring a fresh, commercially available cloth diaper, and the child must be shorter than 39 inches – less than four years old on average. Parents may want to bring a blanket or change pad to put under the baby during the change as it will be mostly done on the floor.

To find out more or to RSVP, you can visit the Bumble Tree on Baker Street in Cran-brook, or find the event on Facebook by search-ing for “Great Cloth Dia-per Change – Cranbrook and Kimberley”.

caRolyn GRanTMid-April is the transition

point from snow accumula-tion to the beginning of melt-ing at high elevations. That’s not to say we can’t get accu-mulation of snow into June in the high alpine, but for the most part, the major accu-mulation is over.

This makes the April Snow Survey and Water Sup-ply Bulletin from the Minis-try of Forests, Lands and Nat-ural Resource Operations’ River Forecast Centre a fairly good guide to how much snow there will be to melt in B.C.’s watersheds this com-ing freshet.

The report, issued on April 8, indicates that there are areas of concern in the province, such as Vancouver Island where the snow pack is only 60 per cent of normal, which could lead to water supply concerns this coming summer, to the Upper Fraser where the snow pack is 136 per cent of normal.

The River Forecast Centre considers anything above 120 per cent to be above nor-mal and the East Kootenays is just skirting that with snowpacks at 118 per cent of normal. Last year, at the time of the April report, East Koo-tenay snowpacks were at 91 per cent of normal.

But weather plays a huge part as well and last year, heavy rains in late June led to

severe flooding as the high elevation snow pack came down very quickly.

“It is important to note that snow pack is only one element that influences whether flooding occurs during the spring freshet,” the report says. “Of critical importance are how the snow melts and how much, and when, precipitation is received during the snow melt period. Therefore weather during the melt sea-son is the key driver that de-termines if flooding will occur or not.

“Analysis of snow pack should not be considered a forecast of upcoming spring flood conditions; rather it is an assessment of whether or not flooding is more likely to occur. Heavy snow packs lead to an increased likeli-hood, or risk, of flooding, however flooding can occur during years with normal snow pack and conversely years with heavy snow pack do not always lead to flood-ing.”

Current medium-range forecasts from the North American Ensemble Fore-cast System indicate a high likelihood of above normal temperatures April 15-22, the report says. This forecast suggests the seasonal transi-tion to snow pack melt will likely occur over the next couple of weeks.

Stetski said that is the role of the city’s information technologies department, which he said was now sift-ing through the surveys to make sure that there is only one survey per household and to make sure the surveys

that the city looks at are from Cranbrook residents only. He said the department is looking for submissions from the same computer IP address or from outside of the city.

The survey was available

for the public to complete from Monday, March 10 to Friday, March 28.

The 17-question survey asked residents for input on urban deer and possible fu-ture population manage-ment strategies. It was in-tended to assess the effec-

tiveness of the current deer management program and provide council with input on what its future direction should be.

The last time the city con-ducted a public survey on urban deer was September 2010.

The board was asked to provide a letter of support for the theatre that could accompany any applications for grants that would fund the re-placement; as well, the school district asked the regional district to next year begin setting aside money for the re-placement.

The regional district board agreed

to write a letter of support for the the-atre replacement. However, the direc-tors will wait until the summer to dis-cuss providing money for the project.

“It’s through the arts that humani-ty’s efforts are worthwhile,” said Area B Director Heath Slee. “I would sup-port something like this. But it needs a balanced regional approach in terms of money.”

The City of Burnaby sent a letter to Cran-brook city council giv-ing an update on how changes to BC Ambu-lance Service (BCAS) Resource Allocation

Plan have affected the city’s emergency re-sponse. At the May 7 meeting, council looked over the report. Cranbrook council has already sent a letter supporting a UBCM proposed resolution.

In October 2013, BCAS amended the Re-source Allocation Plan, reducing the response level for certain types of calls.

“Basically, the sum-mary on this one is that the ambulance service

initiated some changes around what you could and could not use a siren on when you’re attending medical emergencies,” Mayor Wayne Stetski said. “The theory behind it is that it would prevent accidents from hap-pening if the ambu-lances were going slow-er without sirens and lights to attend medical emergencies. So the City of Burnaby and their fire department analyzed what the im-pact of that was on first responders, which are paid for by the cities.”

Stetski explained that Burnaby studied three month periods before and after the changes, first from Aug. 1, 2013 to Oct. 28, 2013, then post-implementa-tion from Oct. 29, 2013 to Jan. 31, 2014.

“First responders ar-

rived on the scene and then looked at how long it took ambulance services to arrive after they got there,” he said. “It increased the aver-age time of an ambu-lance arriving by about 50 per cent.”

Prior to the new pol-icy, Burnaby found that an ambulance would arrive in about 6:38 minutes. After the poli-cy was implemented it went up to an average of 9:21 minutes.

“There were times when first responders waited over 30 minutes for an ambulance to ar-rive and some cases over 60 minutes,” Stets-ki said. “Their concern is that the public can no longer rely on timely emergency medical service from the BC Ambulance Service.”

In Burnaby, the number of incidents

where fire department personnel waited for more than 30 minutes doubled, from 20 times to 44. In six incidents the wait time was more than an hour, which did not occur in the first period. A total of 2,279 medical emergency calls were received in the first period and 2,424 in the second.

The report notes that this essentially downloads some of the responsibilities of the BC Ambulance Service to the municipality by way of the fire depart-ment. In Burnaby it added $210,000 to the city budget, plus an ad-ditional $50,000 a year to maintain the higher level of emergency medical training.

Coun. Diana J. Scott said the fact that it in-creases the time by such a margin is scary.

“The whole reason for the lights and sirens is to get the attention of drivers so they pull over and the ambu-lance can get to the sit-uation sooner,” Scott said. “I’d say alerting people with lights and sirens is way more safe than just being frustrat-ed behind someone who is not maybe look-ing in his rearview mir-ror even though the ambulance is there.”

Coun. Angus Davis said in his experience, both the BC Ambu-lance Service and the Cranbrook fire depart-ment have responded in good time.

“Today they are pro-viding good services,” Davis said. “I think they prove their capabilities and everything all the time. I don’t appreciate this. I think it’s very po-litical.”

BC ambulance changes could see higher cost to city responders

A local bicycle shop is looking for a club or organization to help it continue its bicycle do-nation program.

For the past two years Favorit Cycles has had a bicycle donation pro-gram, where people sell their old bicycles at a per pound trade in. Favorit then fixes them up and

donates them to the Cranbrook Boys and Girls Club.

Wayne McKee, who works at Favorit, said the Boys and Girls Club has enough bikes to run its programs for now, so the shop is looking for other interested parties that could distribute the do-nated bicycles once they are fixed up.

“If we find a group

that would be fantastic,” James McKee, who owns Favorit Cycles, said.

“We want to continue the program, because we think it’s good to get bikes out of people’s ga-rages and get them fixed up and get them back on the street with kids that need them but maybe can’t afford to buy them,” Wayne said.

The hope is that an

organization can be found that can help them with the program.

“We need a school or a club to come forward and help us distribute the bikes that get donat-ed,” Wayne said. “We’ve been wracking our brain thinking who that might be.”

He said the bikes come in all sizes, with everything from small children’s bikes to adult bikes, and they currently have an inventory of bikes that would be ready for donation im-mediately.

If you know of a group that might be in-terested, call Wayne or James at Favorit Cycles at 250-489-3532 or stop by 12 - 9th Avenue South.

Special guest CBC anchor Wendy Mesley fit well with the “Speak your Mind” theme of this year’s show. She is more than familiar with issues facing women today, including her own highly publicized battle with breast can-cer. In January of 2005, she announced that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. She underwent two lumpec-tomies, chemotherapy and radiation, eventual-ly receiving a prognosis of ‘excellent’.

Mesley’s experience, along with others going through the same battle, was explored in her doc-umentary ‘Chasing the Cancer Answer’, a hard-hitting commen-tary on the disease and how it is being treated

and researched in this country and abroad.

Participants were en-couraged to say or write what was on their mind and capture the mo-ment in the photo booth operated by Wells Pho-tography.

A portion of ticket sales went directly to the Abreast in the Rockies dragon boat team, a group that is instrumen-tal in raising awareness and helping the com-munity. This registered charity directly raises funds for breast cancer projects in the East Koo-tenay region and has donated to an oncology unit room upgrade, the sentinel node purchase (used to locate lymph node involvement) and the recent digital mam-mography unit cam-paign.

OTTAWA — A Cana-dian parliament riven by bitter partisan ran-cour came together as one amid the shocking news that Jim Flaherty, the impish, Irish former Conservative finance minister, died suddenly Thursday at his Ottawa residence.

The man Conserva-tives liked to call the best finance minister in the world had stepped down from Prime Min-ister Stephen Harper’s cabinet less than a month ago after more than eight years and 10 federal budgets — the last, in February, effec-tively balanced after years of recession-fight-ing stimulus red ink.

Harper, accompa-nied by his sobbing wife Laureen, told an ashen assembly of Conserva-tive MPs and senators that “our colleague, my partner and my friend’’ had passed away, “an unexpected and terrible shock.’’

Moments earlier, the

daily question period in the House of Commons — the scene of a near brawl 24 hours earlier — had been cancelled as teary MPs from all parties crossed the aisles to console one an-other.

In Washington, a meeting of G20 finance ministers was poised to pay tribute to Flaherty, considered a dean among global treasurers after the 2008-09 finan-cial crisis rocked world economies.

On Friday, the Com-mons will suspend reg-ular business and ques-tion period so parlia-mentarians can pay tribute to Flaherty.

Flaherty, 64, served as Harper’s only finance minister from the time the Conservatives won office in January 2006 until last month, when he stepped down, say-ing he would not run in the 2015 election and wanted more time with his family.

A statement from his wife Christine Elliott, herself a member of the

Ontario legislature, and their triplet sons John, Galen and Quinn, all born in 1991, said Fla-herty died peacefully.

“We appreciate that he was so well support-ed in his public life by Canadians from coast to coast to coast and by his international col-leagues,’’ the statement read.

Flaherty had been battling a rare and pain-ful skin disorder for more than a year but in-sisted after delivering his Feb. 11 budget that he was on the mend.

He was considered a congenial, twinkle-eyed

counterweight in cabi-net to the equally expe-rienced but sometimes flinty prime minister, someone able to chal-lenge and complement Harper.

“An Irish lion is gone,’’ Tony Clement, the Treasury Board president who also served previously with Flaherty in the Ontario legislature, posted on Twitter.

Elizabeth May, the Green party leader, summarized the mood in Parliament when she recalled, “I never saw Jim Flaherty engage in a single moment that could be described as mean-spirited.

“And to be well-loved in politics after all these years, that’s a tribute to the man.’’

The House of Com-mons abruptly sus-pended its sitting before question period began as word of the death spread. Opposition MPs spilled into the Com-mons foyer looking stunned, many with red-rimmed, tear-filled

eyes.Opposition Leader

Tom Mulcair’s voice quivered and he had to squeeze his eyes against tears as he remembered Flaherty “for his pleas-ant demeanour and strength of character.’’

DAILY TOWNSMAN / DAILY BULLETIN

On one hand, eastern Ukraine appears to be slipping out of the government’s control, as pro-Russian groups seize con-trol of official buildings in big

eastern cities like Donetsk and Luhansk and demand referendums on union with Russia. They al-most certainly do not repre-sent majority opinion in those cities, but the police stand aside and people who support Ukrainian unity are nervous about expressing their opinions in public.

On the other hand, the European Union’s foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton, has just announced that the EU, the United States, Ukraine and Russia will all meet somewhere in Europe next week to discuss ways of “de-escalating the situa-tion in Ukraine.” That will be the first time that Russia’s foreign minister, Sergei Lav-rov, has agreed to meet with a representa-tive of the Ukrainian government.

So is this crisis heading for a resolution or an explosion? It still depends on wheth-er Russian President Vladimir Putin thinks that the annexation of Crimea is enough compensation for the humiliation he suf-fered when his ally in Kiev, former Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych, was overthrown by a popular revolution. And clearly Putin hasn’t yet decided that himself.

Rationality says take your winnings to the bank and quit the game while you’re

ahead. Putin’s action has guaranteed that almost any imaginable Ukrainian govern-ment will be hostile for the foreseeable fu-ture, but the NATO countries will be will-ing to forget about Crimea after a while if he goes no further. Does he really want the

United States, Germany, France and Britain as his enemies too?

Yet the temptation is there. Putin’s agents are ev-erywhere in eastern Ukraine, he has 40,000 troops ready to go at a mo-ment’s notice just across

the frontier, and all the Russian navy’s am-phibious assault ships are now in the Black Sea – he could grab the Ukrainian coast all the way west to Odessa at the same time. The Ukrainian army would fight, but could not hold out for more than a day or two, and NATO would not send troops. Why not do it?

There are lots of good reasons not to. Putin would face a protracted guerilla war in Ukraine (he would call it “terrorism”, of course). He would find himself in a new Cold War that Russia would lose much faster than it lost the last one: it has only half the population of the old Soviet Union, and now depends heavily on Western mar-kets for its modest prosperity.

He would find new NATO military bases opening up in various countries on Rus-sia’s borders that joined the alliance for safety’s sake, but have so far not allowed foreign (i.e. American or German) troops

to be based permanently on their soil out of consideration for Russian anxieties. He really shouldn’t even consider grabbing Ukraine, but he is a man with a very big chip on his shoulder.

So what sort of line should the Europe-ans, the Americans and the Ukrainians be taking with Russia next week? This is about hard power, so appeals to sweet reason are pointless. “Sanctions” are also irrelevant: this has now gone consider-ably beyond the point where gesture poli-tics has any role to play. The economic and strategic prices that Russia would pay need to be big and they need to be stated clearly.

But at the same time, Russia’s own legit-imate concerns have to be addressed, and the main one is its fear that Ukraine might some day join NATO. That requires a firm commitment that Ukraine will be strictly neutral, under international guarantee. Russia will also try to get a promise that Ukraine will be “federalised”, but that is none of its business and should be reject-ed.

Ukraine needs lots of money, in a hurry, to stay solvent while it holds an election (on 25 May) and sorts itself out politically. And if all that is done, then maybe Putin will settle for Crimea and put up with the prospect of having to live next door to a neutral but democratic Ukraine.

Otherwise, it’s going to get quite ugly.

Jim Wardner’s handbills circulating on the streets of St. Louis went straight to the point: “MONEY FOR ALL! Come to the

National Candy Bank this evening in the Laclede Hotel. 5000 lbs. Granulated Sugar to be sold at 5 cents per pound.”

The thing was, sugar was selling for 10 cents per pound at the time. A temporary “bank” in a hotel storefront, a counter, a few banners and a whole lot of sugar brought peo-ple in droves. Jim made money by selling highly overpriced sticks of candy wrapped in a coupon allowing the purchase of up to fifty pounds of sugar at half price. His calculations proved correct and the money started to pour in, until those in power began demanding seri-ous monetary kickbacks; time to pull up and move out, $1,700 dollars to the good. It was all in a day’s work for Jim Wardner; mining and real estate mag-nate, entrepreneur, raconteur and occasional showman. From St. Louis to Deadwood to New Orleans, Jim spent the next few years making and los-ing money through numerous means. In 1883, he joined the gold rush to the Couer d’Alene area, specifically the booming mining camps of Murray and Eagle City, where he undertook a very successful stint of build-ing miles of ditches to carry water to the miners. Jim was doing very well but a chance meeting with a colleague in 1885 led Jim to a spanking new “find.” Following his friend’s di-rections, Jim travelled miles through the bush to the camp of Noah Kellogg, Con Sullivan and Phil O’Rourke, all hard-ened prospectors. It seems that a short time previously they made their evening camp near the mouth of a creek some dis-tance away. When they awoke the next morning their jackass, a “diminutive but very cunning and tricky animal,” had wan-dered off. The trail led a merry chase to a canyon whereupon they found the donkey staring intently at a point in the dis-tance where the sun’s rays re-flected a most impressive chute of galena ore. The donkey had discovered what was to be-come the Bunker Hill and Sulli-van Mines, two of the highest paying propositions in the his-tory of the Northwest. Having informed Jim of the situation while happily imbibing of his whiskey, the miners soon went about their work whilst Jim

slipped out of camp and staked the water rights for the entire area, a task the boys had over-looked. The miners took his claim with good grace and formed an agreement that made them all – including grubstakers Peck and Cooper, the actual absentee owners of the jackass – wealthy men. Mining communities immedi-ately sprang up throughout the area including Wardner, Idaho, where Jim and his partner Horace Davenport literally cor-nered the market by buying all the corner lots in the new com-munity and re-selling them at a hefty profit. The town gradually died as the mining wore down but, by then, Jim had moved on to the west coast. There, on behalf of millionaire Nelson Bennett, he did much to create the town of Fairhaven. He orga-nized the Water Works, the Electric Light Co., the Samish Lake Logging & Milling Co. (of which he was president) and the first National Bank (vice-president). He built an expensively expansive resi-dence referred to as “Ward-ner’s Castle.” which still stands today in Fairhaven, now an his-toric section of Bellingham, Washington.

In 1888, Jim, with time on his hands, announced the for-mation of the Consolidated Black Cat Co. Ltd and the pur-chase of a small island in Puget Sound stating he planned to raise black cats for the purpose of skinning them in order to supply a demand in certain parts of Missouri and Arkansas. According to Jim, the hide of a black cat killed in the dark of the moon was much valued for medical reasons. As far-fetched as it sounded, the news trav-elled far and wide, published in varying accounts in major pa-

pers throughout the land. It created quite a stir at the time and gave Jim much amuse-ment and one more story to add to his repertoire, a tale that remains an urban legend to the present day.

With his family ensconced in Fairhaven, he continued his rambling ways, buying and selling real estate in Kaslo, B.C., in 1892, and then travelling to Cape Town, South Africa where he remained for three years. Returning to Canada in 1895, he brokered the purchase of 842 lots for $176,000 in the new settlement of Rossland, B.C. and then anticipated the com-ing of the CPR to the East Koo-tenay by buying a great deal of land near the Kootenay River which he promptly named Wardner, B.C. The town went through a rapid boom period in 1897, when it was thought that the CPR would make its main depot there, but gradual-ly died out when Cranbrook became the destination of

choice. By then, having lost two large, heavily laden riverboats which sank in the Kootenay River on the same day at a sig-nificant financial loss, Jim Wardner was in Dawson City attending to the Yukon gold rush as a merchant and mining speculator.

It was in Mexico that Jim’s luck finally went bust. While in Sonora, working on behalf of a group of British Columbia busi-nessmen, he contracted an ill-ness. Trapped due to an upris-ing by the local Yaqui Indians he was unable to seek medical help. When he finally attempt-ed the journey back to British Columbia he only made it as far as El Paso, Texas where, having lived more lives than a clowder of black cats, he died on Mar. 3, 1905, age 59. The Cranbrook Herald stated: “Jim Wardner is dead but if there is any reward in the future for a good heart, good intentions, good acts and a charitable soul, Jim Wardner will reap that reward.”

After scoring three goals in a span of 2:59, it looked like the Medicine Hat Tigers had it in the bag.

What a difference one period makes.

The Kootenay Ice lit the goal lamp five times in the final 20 minutes of Game Four on Thursday night to come back and win 7-4, pushing their opponents to the brink of playoff elimination with a 3-1 series lead.

Game Five goes down on Saturday night in Medicine Hat.

“A 3-1 lead, that’s ob-viously what we wanted,” said Ice forward Luke Philp. “The playoffs, every game is so tight and now the pressure is on them going back into their barn, but we’re going to try our best now to seal it out in their barn and finish it off.”

Jaedon Descheneau posted his second play-off hat trick and Philp had a goal and three as-sists to lead the Ice to victory. Scoring also came from Sam Rein-hart, Zach Franko and Kyle O’Connor.

Medicine Hat, which led 4-2 after 40 minutes, had goals from Chad La-belle, Dylan Bredo, Miles Koules and Curtis Valk.

Mackenzie Skapski started in goal making 14 saves for just over half

the game, but got the hook in the second peri-od after giving up three goals in three minutes. Wyatt Hoflin picked the win with 21 stops in 23 minutes of playing time.

Marek Langhamer gave up four goals in 31 shots—three of which came in the third period. He was replaced with Nick Schneider, who sur-rendered Descheneau’s game-winner and was subsequently benched in favour of the Czech netminder.

Each side had a goal after the first period, but the Tabbies went up 4-1 with 3:52 left in the sec-ond frame. The very next shift, Philp went out and scored.

“That was huge,” said Philp. “They had all the momentum, obviously, so that killed a bit of it, going into the third there giving us more belief in making a comeback, so it was a big goal.”

Descheneau agreed.“It’s definitely hard

when that happens to you, you deflate a bit,” he said, “but Philper, Phees-er and Cabez went out there and had a big shift for us and got the puck down low and Phil put us back into the game going into the third period.”

Descheneau scored his first on the powerplay in the opening period, but Labelle replied six minutes later to even it

up.The floodgates

opened after the halfway mark of the middle frame, with Bredo notch-ing a goal with the man-advantage, fol-lowed by efforts from Koules and Valk.

However, Philp an-swered right back to make it a two-goal deficit for the final 20 minutes

of the game. The Ice got their

comeback rolling after the 3rd period media timeout, with Sam Rein-hart redirecting a blast from Valiev. Descheneau notched the game-tying marker, banging in a cross-ice feed from Philp in Tigers territory.

That chased Lang-hamer from the goal and

Schneider went in, but that didn’t stop the De-scheneau from complet-ing his hat trick on a breakaway, which gave the Ice a 5-4 lead.

All three goals came within 5:38, something that the team knew would come if they stayed patient, said De-scheneau.

“When you’re given a

chance, make sure you put it in,” he said. “We got our opportunities, Phil made some nice plays, so did Sam and we got lucky enough that they went in and got the win.”

Langhamer went back in and soon headed to the bench for the extra attacker, but Franko skated it in for an empty net goal. O’Connor

found another empty cage just before the final buzzer sounded.

NOTES: Game Five is in Medicine Hat on Sat-urday, but Kootenay will host Game Six should it be required on Monday. Tickets for Game Six—if necessary—will go on sale on Sunday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the box office.

ARIES (March 21-April 19) You might wake up feeling lucky. Whether or not you choose to act on this feeling, you’ll see everything fall into place today. Your sense of hu-mor will help you deal with an unexpected obstacle, which could help to free up your week-end. Tonight: Join friends. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You seem to be bubbling with ideas and plans. Make calls and necessary arrangements. You’ll gain a sudden insight into why someone is so reactive. You can question this person’s actions all you want, but you’re not likely to get an answer. Tonight: Ever playful. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Stay focused on a personal or domestic issue. Be willing to put more effort into what you want. It is clear that you can’t delegate right now and get the results you desire. A friend could surprise you. Tonight: Where the gang is!

CANCER (June 21-July 22) Don’t hesitate to reach out to a neighbor or close relative. You might be delighted by the con-versation that ensues. A boss or friend could add an unusual element of surprise to your day; choose to roll with it. Tonight: Out with a loved one. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You could be a bit frivolous as you decide to indulge a loved one to the max. Understand your limitations as well as this person’s needs. You might have the best intentions, but you could go completely overboard. Stay within your budget. To-night: The moment continues. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You’ll feel unstoppable, and in a sense you are. Focus on what you need to do in order to get the results you desire. Make plans for the weekend that in-volve close friends, as you seem to be happiest around them. A new friend could be demand-ing. Tonight: As you like it. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) Remain sensitive to what needs to happen with someone you

look up to. You could choose to say little at the moment and observe more. You might feel as if a situation is a little out of control. Use caution with your finances. Tonight: In the lime-light. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Zero in on what is important in a discussion. Others will be responsive, as long as you demonstrate the ability to un-derstand the big picture and its ramifications. You might be out of sorts when dealing with a difficult person. Do only what you must. Tonight: Find your friends. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You could be in a situation that is hard to break away from. Oth-ers will want you around to help make sure that everything is up to snuff with a project. Be flat-tered, even if it means working later than you want to. Tonight: It could be a late one. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Reach out to someone at a distance. You might need to rethink how you deal with this person. Others are highly

responsive to you, and they will welcome any suggestions. Tonight: Think in terms beyond the obvious, and make plans accordingly. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Interact on a one-on-one basis. You could find that a lot of what you thought would be difficult actually is quite easy, as others seem to be responsive. One person might be unusually un-predictable later today. Tonight: Time with a favorite person. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You might want to get to the bottom of a problem that re-volves around a friend at a dis-tance. You could be taken aback by someone else’s suggestion, but you might decide to use it anyway. A child will be most responsive. Tonight: Follow a friend’s advice. BORN TODAY Fashion designer Oleg Cassini (1913), actor Joel Grey (1932), broadcaster Jeremy Clarkson (1960) ***

Dear Annie: Four years ago, I caught my husband lying and cheating in an emotional affair (he says there was never any sex). He and this same woman had been cheating for 10 years. She is married with grown chil-dren. She never told her husband what she did, so she has gotten away with it. We went to counseling, and it seems that my husband is on the straight and narrow. I love him dearly. We’ve been married for 25 years, have three wonderful children and get along wonderfully. The problem is, I am always worried that he is still doing things behind my back with this woman. He swears up and down that he has no contact with her. He claims he caught her lying and doesn’t even want her as a friend. But I know he has forgiven her for ly-ing at least three times before. I honestly do not believe what he tells me, and it is affect-ing my peace of mind. I have considered moving just to get out of this small community where everyone knows everybody else. I want to punch her every time I run into her. Should I tell my husband how I feel? We have spoken about the past so many times that neither of us wants to bring it up again. He knows how much he hurt me. -- Dazed and Confused Dear Dazed: Trust is difficult to regain, and it is made more complicated when your husband lives near the Other Woman. It is important that your husband be complete-ly transparent in all of his dealings. Can you check his phone or email whenever you worry he is slipping back into old habits? If he hides things from you, you have cause for concern. But otherwise, please try to put your concerns in perspective. And don’t feel squeamish about discussing your wor-ries with your husband, as long as you don’t make accusations that put him on the defen-sive. If necessary, go back for counseling and work on this. Dear Annie: My cousin’s son recently mar-ried. Aside from my cousin’s immediate family, there were only a few family mem-bers invited to the wedding. It wasn’t a small wedding. There were at least 200 guests. The problem is the way my cousin and her husband acted toward us. My cousin seemed upset all evening. She was fairly cor-dial, but acted stressed. Her husband, whom we’ve known for 35 years, did not greet or acknowledge our presence. He was cold and absolutely rude. They sat at our table and had nothing to say. While the bridesmaids gave speeches, they occupied themselves with their cellphones. We felt unwelcome. The bride barely looked our way and didn’t give us a chance to congratulate her, al-though the groom briefly greeted us. I want to tell my cousin how rude her hus-band was, but I’m not sure how to approach her. How do we handle this? -- N.J. Dear N.J.: You are making a lot of assump-tions about your cousin’s behavior. We think her stress and her husband’s coldness had nothing to do with you. More likely, their behavior was a result of wedding stress (and possibly the bride). And remember that sit-ting with the groom’s parents is a great hon-or. If they wanted to insult you, they would have seated you much farther away. Unless they do other things that are deliberately rude, please say nothing. Dear Annie: I read the letter from “Boon-doggled in Boise,” whose father refused to let the granddaughter see his coin collection and demanded it be sold through a third party. Why didn’t you suggest that the sons talk to the third party and buy the coins for fair market value? Dad doesn’t need to know his kids are the buyers. He gets to sell the coins the way he wants, and the brothers get to keep them in the family. -- Know About Difficult Relatives Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitch-ell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. Mary Richardson 1952 - 2014

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mary Richardson, beloved wife of Clay Richardson of Cranbrook, BC on March 29, 2014 at Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary.

Mary was born in Lent, Holland on May 2, 1952. She immigrated to Canada in 1956 and resided in

Lethbridge, AB until 1988 before moving with her family to Cranbrook. Mary dedicated her life to her family as a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

Over the last 12 years Mary has been a Pastoral Care worker for the Catholic Diocese of Nelson working in Native Ministry. Her greatest love was working with the Ktunaxa and Shuswap nations, where she made countless friends. The support she received from the nations in her work was her greatest blessing.

Besides her loving husband Clay, Mary is survived by two daughters, Erin (Ryan) Bernier and Sandra Richardson and three grandsons, Tobias Solorzano, Isaiah Richardson-Langa and Mylo Bernier of Calgary. She is also survived by two brothers, Frank (Geri) Vanden Heuvel and Leo (Sharon) Vanden Heuvel of Lethbridge, as well as many nephews, nieces and relatives in Holland.

A funeral mass for Mary will be held Friday, April 25 at 11:00 am at Christ The Servant Catholic Church (1100 - 14th Avenue South) in Cranbrook, followed by a memorial feast at the Ktunaxa Nation Government Building located at 220 - Cranbrook Street North.

Arrangements entrusted to McPherson Funeral Service. Condolences for the family can be offered at:

Delmer Bruce Ferg 1924 - 2014

It is with deep sorrow that the family of Bruce Ferg announces his passing on Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at 89 years of age in Cranbrook.

Bruce was born on May 15, 1924 in Neepawa, Manitoba and raised in the Nelson, BC area. He

enlisted in WWII serving with the Royal Canadian Artillery stationed in Italy. After the war Bruce moved to Cranbrook where he was employed by CP Rail for 38 years. Here he met and married Louise Romano and they were married for over 65 years. They raised their 6 children in Cranbrook. He retired from CP Rail in 1984. Bruce loved his sports especially hockey. He was a season ticket holder of the Kootenay Ice. Bruce’s life revolved around his kids and grandkids.

Bruce is survived by his children Diane (Clive), Leanna (Lynn), Marvin, Paul and Mark, grandchildren Tammy (Phil), Darryl (Claire) and Krista (Jeremy), great grandchild Mason and his step-children Steven (Sonia) and James (Debbie). He was predeceased by his son Darryl and his loving wife Louise.

The family would like to thank Dr. Cutler and Dr. Buchar for their care of Bruce over the years. They would also like to thank the doctors and nurses that took care of Bruce at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital during his final hours. Bruce was always thankful for the excellent help from the home support workers that made it possible for him to remain at home until the end. Bruce also had tremendous support from Debi, Curly, Sandra, Clayton, Laurie, Debbie, Bob, Donna and Brian.

A Celebration of Bruce’s Life will be held at McPherson Funeral Home in Cranbrook on Monday, April 14, 2014 at 11:00 am. A private family Interment will be held after the Celebration Of Life. Next Friday, Christians from dif-f e r e n t churches

in Cranbrook will join to-gether for the tenth an-nual Good Friday Cross-Walk. It’s a spiritual pil-grimage through the streets of downtown Cranbrook. This is wor-ship in the streets! We pray for our city, its lead-ers and all who live here. We pray for our nation and for the world.

The CrossWalk be-gins at 10 a.m. on Good Friday at the Clock Tower. From there, we will carry a cross through the downtown core of the city and stop at several locations. At each stop, we read a passage from Scripture and we pray together.

Our prayers will em-brace the city and its people, leaders and gov-ernments around the world, our legal system, our health care system, caregivers of all sorts and those who need to be surrounded with prayer and compassion and grace. We pray for the victims and perpe-trators of war and ha-tred. We pray for all whose lives need to be held up in the light of God’s love. We end with prayers for the churches and other faith groups, all who seek to live with peace and compassion in the world. We pray that we might learn to live and work together

with compassion for the good of all people.

Why do we do this?We do it as a faithful

witness to the grace and compassion of God. We hold up our city in prayer so that God’s love might surround and em-brace us all with h e a l i n g grace. We journey to-gether, bearing witness to Jesus who comes to our world with a differ-ent vision of what a whole and healthy life looks like. God’s vision for the world is of a community of compas-sion and companion-ship. It’s a world where power resides in service and self–giving love, not in might and coercion. It’s a vision of healing and restoration so that all people may live to-gether in peace with jus-tice.

A few weeks ago, I suggested that the cross is about an alternative vision of what life could be like. Jesus didn’t die on the cross primarily so that we could get to heaven. Rather, he was executed by the state because his vision of life was so radically differ-ent that he was seen as a threat. In the cross, we see the depth of Jesus’ passion for a world based on a radical equality among all peo-ple. We see the power of

God’s love, which holds us up even in the midst of the most painful suf-fering.

In our CrossWalk, in our prayers, we give voice to that vision. We

don’t ask God to c o m e crashing into our world to set every-t h i n g

right. Rather, as we pray, we make a fresh com-mitment to live by the gospel values of com-

passion, peace, justice and wholeness. We make a public act of wit-ness that we walk with Jesus, that we share that same vision of a life made whole and new.

Canadian theologian Douglas John Hall talks about prayer as “learn-ing to see the world through God’s eyes.” As we pray, we learn to view the world with compassion and grace. We learn to seek justice for all people. We seek to live on this earth as responsible and faithful

people who care for one another and who care for the earth as well.

CrossWalking is one way in which we renew our commitment to walk in the way of Jesus. It is a way that leads to a cross, since walking this path faithfully will bring us into conflict with the world and its values.

God invites us to be partners in what John Dominic Crossan calls “God’s great cleanup of the world”. We work in partnership with God, so that the gospel values

of love and compassion and justice might tri-umph in our own lives and in the world.

God has a deep, abiding and profound love for the world. Our prayers for the city and all its people, for peace and justice, for hope and healing, reflects our longing to participate in God’s passionate love affair with the world.

As we journey through the city, we feel the burden of the cross we carry. At the same time, we experience the

reality of its liberating power. We renew our commitment to the cru-cified and risen Christ as we commit ourselves to serve Cranbrook in love.

Join us on Good Fri-day, April 18. We begin at the Clock Tower at 10 am. Come journey with us. Come pray with us. Come show your love for Cranbrook. Come carry the cross with us.

Yme Woensdregt is Pastor at Christ Church Anglican in Cranbrook.

GATINEAU, Que. — Suspended senator Pat-rick Brazeau has been charged with two counts of assault, uttering death threats, cocaine posses-sion and breach of bail conditions.

He arrived at the Gatineau, Que., court-house in handcuffs Thursday morning after police responded to a 4 a.m. domestic violence incident.

Gatineau police spokesman Pierre Lan-thier said a 39-year-old man was arrested after a 911 phone call.

“It was an altercation between a man and a

woman,’’ he said.He said officers who

went to the scene found that a violent confronta-tion had occurred on a patio in front of resi-dence.

A woman com-plained of being assault-ed by the 39-year-old.

Another man who was inside the house, complained he was as-saulted and threatened.

A year ago, the Sen-ate ordered Brazeau to pay back almost $50,000 over disputed expense claims. He refused, and the Senate garnished his salary until last Novem-ber, when he was sus-pended without pay.
