HOLY REDEEMER PARISH ELLWOOD CITY, PENNSYLVANIA

Support all Catholic Education: “Great Beginnings last a lifetime.”

The famous passage that is our Gospel Lesson today is really an invitation to grow in faith. In fact, this passage points out that some of our spiritual practices are not helpful at all. The Gospel shows us that after performing ministry, Jesus always ends in private prayer. He goes from prayer into ministry and from ministry back into prayer. On this occasion, as He is in prayer, He learns that the Apostles are on the water and in trouble. For the ancient peoples, the deep waters of the sea always represented strong evil powers that were beyond their control. Humanity was powerless against them. The ancient Christians viewed the church as a boat filled with the disciples of Jesus and the evil powers were the waves threatening to destroy Her. Through the darkness, crashing waves and spraying mist, Jesus approaches to save His disciples. Not being able to see clearly, they think one of the evils of the sea is approaching. What happens next is very important. The Gospel says, “At once Jesus spoke to them, ‘Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.’” Their prayers, and ours as well, are answered immediately. When we speak, our God hears us. Another lesson in this passage is in the way St. Peter responds to the rescue, “If it is you, command me to come to You on the water.” Real faith does not require a test. Perhaps he should have welcomed Jesus onboard. Real faith would have been a gracious welcome to the presence of the Lord. Hence, St. Peter sinks. But even in that moment of failure, the lesson of the passage is repeated to us, “Immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught Peter.” Our Lord’s response to us is immediate. After this second rescue, the Apostles respond with genuine faith, “They welcomed Jesus aboard and did Him homage”. In our day, waves of all kinds are crashing against our church, frightening us, and calling our faith into question. But Jesus is always watching over us ready to respond immediately. Like Jesus, let us begin and end our day with prayer. Let us begin and end every event with prayer; a beautiful communion with God.

HOLY REDEEMER-FAITH FORMATION

Due to the uncertainty of the next months caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, it is difficult to know the exact picture of the Faith Formation Program beginning this Fall. To assist us with planning and implementation, all families with children in the Faith Formation program are asked to complete the registration forms that are available on the Parish website and return them to the Parish Office. Please know we are planning with the safety of your children and family as our top priority, as well as the importance of continuing to help them grow in their Catholic faith. We are considering a possible hybrid of on-line and on-site catechesis. Thank you and God Bless!

Marian Feasts Question: Why does Mary have so many feast days and names?

Answer: Christians first began celebrating feast days in honor of Mary, the Mother of Jesus, in the fifth century. That celebration (originally called the Feast of the Dormition and now known by Roman Catholics as the Solemnity of the Assumption) was celebrated on August 15. Very soon, however, other special days dedicated to Mary began to appear in Jerusalem, Rome, and other major cities of the Christian world. These days of feasting became important parts of the life of the community. But, more importantly, each of these unique celebrations became an opportunity to focus on a different facet of the Christian faith, as believers focused their attention on specific events or mysteries of the lives of Mary and her Son. Over the centuries, some of these celebrations became universal (such as the Assumption on August 15, the Immaculate Conception on December 8, and the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God on January 1). Other celebrations were more closely tied to certain religious orders (such as the Carmelites celebration of “Our Lady of Mount Carmel” on July 16 or the Servite Friars feast of the “Seven Sorrows of Mary,” which is now celebrated as the Memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows on September 15). In more recent times, Marian apparitions (like Guadalupe, Lourdes, and Fatima) have inspired special liturgical celebrations. Pope Francis has added two new celebrations of Mary to the Church’s calendar: The Memorial of Mary, Mother of the Church (on the Monday after Pentecost) and the Commemoration of Our Lady of Loreto (on December 10). The various titles of Mary (like those we find in the Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary) help us to reflect on different aspects of Mary’s faith and the ways that the Holy Spirit is at work in her and through her, especially as the Mother of Jesus. In the end, whatever the event or mystery being celebrated in a particular liturgy or the title of Mary being used, we are invited to always see Mary in connection with the saving work of her Son. She is, of course, a patroness and protector for every Christian, but she is also a model of discipleship and contemplation: “Having entered deeply into the history of salvation, Mary, in a way, unites in her person and re-echoes the most important doctrines of the faith: and when she is the subject of preaching and worship she prompts the faithful to come to her Son, to His sacrifice and to the love of the Father” (Lumen Gentium, 65)

Who Makes the Coffee? Early one morning, a husband and wife were playfully arguing over who should get

out of the warm bed to make the coffee. Finally, the wife folded her arms and said decidedly, “You have to make the coffee. It’s in the Bible!” The husband was shocked. “Is not! Show me!” Pulling out her Bible, the wife opened it to the New Testament and declared, “It says right here — HEBREWS!”

The Memorare

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help, or

sought your intercession was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, I fly to you O Virgin of virgins, my mother. To you I come; before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in your mercy, hear and answer me. AMEN.

To My Holy Redeemer Family

I have been in the catechetical ministry since 1979 when my oldest child was 5 years old and beginning faith formation at St. Agatha Church. God bless Sr. Linda and Sr. Damien, from the Sisters of the Humility of Mary, who were the Directors of Religious Education at that time and who introduced me to this ministry by insisting that I teach the Confirmation class. My first reaction was, ‘you have got to be kidding?’ But it is now 41 years later and I look back and see what a tremendous gift they gave me. I have been a Director of Faith Formation for the last 28 of those 41 years, first with St. Agatha and then with Holy Redeemer. The guidance, support, trust and friendship I have received from the many priests I have worked for, and with, especially Fr. Mark, is unparalleled.

I will always be grateful to my mentor, colleague, and friend, Kay Bellissimo. We complement each other so well, and I believe we made a great team over the course of these last 20 years. She has taught me so much. I hope I have reciprocated in some small way. Thank you to Eileen Hazen, our secretary. She is like a second mother to me. And I have to say, she knows how to keep us organized. One of the greatest gifts of these last 28 years is the many catechists I have had the privilege of working with. The love they have for their faith and for the children of Holy Redeemer Parish is why this job, this ministry, has been such a joy for me. I love these women and men! Thank you for your support and trust in me. And then, there is all the many children and their families I have gotten to know and learn from. Yes, I learned a great deal from the little ones. My faith has grown exponentially because of the children I have come to know and are now grown and have children of their own coming to our faith formation programs. So now, a new beginning for me, a new journey…retirement. I know this will be a difficult transition for me because this work I call ministry is a passion for me. But now, my family, who is scattered throughout the country, will become the forefront. I am looking forward to our time together. I cannot thank Holy Redeemer Parish enough for the opportunities she has given me during my tenure. I thank God every day to have been able to work these many years doing something I truly love. I will miss my work as a Director of Faith Formation and I will miss seeing everyone - clergy, staff and the many volunteers and parishioners that come through our doors every day. We work hard but laugh even harder. But Holy Redeemer is my spiritual home - I will not be far away. Thank you and God bless. Laurie Nocera

RECOGNIZE GOD IN YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS

Being Human is to Doubt Humans doubt. It’s what we do. We doubt ourselves and we doubt others. Before any of us say anything about Peter’s doubting the words of Jesus that told him he could get out of his boat and walk on water, we need to get real with ourselves: How would I respond in the same situation? I remember when I was child taking swimming lessons. One day I simply tightened up my muscles and sank. The lifeguard pulled me up and asked what happened. I said I did not know. The truth is that I was sinking under the weight of my own doubt. I did not believe I could do what clearly, I was told I could. That was only in five feet of water in a pool! Now that I’m older, I can look back and laugh. But an adult, the swimming pool is life, and I would be lying if I said that there are no longer times I find myself sinking due to new doubts. Much of our doubt comes about because of a lack of trust in God. We place our trust in material things, wealth, or imperfect people instead of the One who is worthy of our trust 100 percent of the time. Our stewardship is often hampered by our doubt that God will provide all that we need. If I give more, I may not have enough to survive! When we place all our trust in God, not only do we find that we have been given all we need – our doubt that cause us to sink in the pool of life fades away. We don’t suddenly become perfect in our trust, and there will be times when we find ourselves with concerns again. However, it is in those moments we find that He is still there, speaking the words we need to hear: “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.” – Tracy Earl Welliver

REMEMBER LORD and welcome into your kingdom those who have died, especially John Gregory Beres. May his soul and all the souls of the faithful departed, Rest in Peace. Amen. Please pray for the consolation of those who mourn.

Care for the Most Vulnerable

During these stressful times of the pandemic, the poor, elderly or those living alone tend to become the most vulnerable to illness, loneliness and depression. While we have a tremendous food bank that helps those in need, we, as parishioners, should try to maintain connections with those in need. It may be tempting for us to isolate ourselves and put ourself before others, at these moments, but it may be helpful to seek the Holy Spirit’s guidance for how we can best care for our neighbors who are experiencing problems. God Bless You!
