DEAR PARENTS/CARERS: ROOM 8 (Years 2/3) ASSEMBLY: Last Thursday, Mrs Kildahl and her students from Years 2 & 3 entertained us with a ‘Talk 4 Writing’ example of a manipulated text. The class had read the book, ‘Where The Wild Things Are’ and devised their own text called ‘Where The Cute Things Are’. The students had painted 2 sided masks, first of the Wild Things and the reverse side, the Cute Things. Their text recount was very visual and engaging as they told their version of ‘Where The Cute Things Are’. It was an excellent example of the new strategies being developed and employed by our teaching staff to engage and enhance the students in writing. FACTION TABLOID CARNIVAL: Last Wednesday we held a successful Tabloid Carnival. Congratulations to all the competitors from Pre-primary to Year 6. It was a great community day with many parents, carers and family members coming out to support the children. While we had many winners on the day, proudly displaying their ribbons and medals, all students were winners for competing and displaying a good competitive spirit. INTERSCHOOL ATHLETICS: Term 3 is coming to an end and there is no clearer sign than the annual Interschool Athletics Carnivals, the fresh Spring flowers and warmer days. Selected students from Years 1 – 6 are representing the school this week at the Jumps & Throws (Tuesday) and the Athletics Carnival (Friday) at Poseidon PS. We wish them success and trust that they will represent Craigie Heights in the spirit of good sports, competitive racing and co-operative team games. Whatever the result, we hope they do their best and enjoy the experience, as not every child is able to excel at sports, just as not every child excels at reading, maths or music. Mr Kelleher and staff have worked very hard to organise the team. We have been impressed and thankful for the parents and students who turn up at 7:30 a.m. on the oval for some extra training. It shows team spirit and reflects one of our expected behaviours of ‘Being An Achiever.’ Good Luck team! DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

PATHS (Promoting Alternative Thinking Skills)– PROBLEM SOLVING

Remember the Control Signals Poster from Week 5’s news-

letter? Well here is more detailed version, the Problem Solver

Poster.

This approach to problem solving breaks down the Red,

Yellow and Green Lights, into action steps. Eleven steps may

seem like a lot, but it really isn’t.

The key is just to think before you act. And of course no one

is perfect. Look at step 11 – sometimes we just need to try

again!

Talk For Writing This year at Craigie Heights Primary School we have been introducing the ‘Talk For Writing’ process. It is a contemporary writing process where students incorporate oral language and learn exemplary texts with actions during the ‘imitate’ stage. This helps students recall text structure and language features when writing their own texts. During the ‘innovate’ stage, classes work together to change the model text. During this time they focus on language features such as using adjectives or interesting vocabulary. In the final ‘invent’ stage, students that need it are scaffolded to create their own writing, and those who are capable writers, have the opportunity to extend their work. Students are really engaged in the process and their writing as a result is of a higher calibre. With the implementation of ‘Talk For Writing’ this year, it is important to recognise student successes in writing. Each term teachers nominate 2 Recommended Authors from their class. Names are published in the school newsletter, student names are read out at assemblies and their work is displayed in the library.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Continued…...

Emmersen, Year 1, Room 5 wrote about her Father’s Day Breakfast. In her own words – she wrote 4 pages, included adjectives, similes and great words.

Madison from Pre-Primary, Room 2 wrote a retell of making a shark. She correctly used punctuation (capital letters, full stops and commas) and highlighted them by using a red and green pencil .

Jordan from Room 13 was being an ACHIEVER!

During the Faction Carnival last week Jordan really showed

what it meant to ‘Be an Achiever’. Being an achiever isn’t

always about winning or coming first. Being an Achiever is

about participating and performing all tasks to the best of our

ability in order to achieve our own personal goals. Jordan

showed great resilience and perseverance at the carnival,

especially in the running races, and for that Jordan- you are a

CHAMPION!

Well Done to all of the

students who made it into

the PBS Corner this

fortnight!

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT FACTION SPORTS CARNIVAL

Our Faction Athletics Carnival last Wednesday was a great success. The new format of a ‘Tabloid’

structure allowed all the children to be engaged in physical activity all the way through to lunch. The

children were happy and active and even enjoyed the parents joining some of the games in the junior area.

It was wonderful to see so many smiling faces.

Well done to Kaarda for winning the day and congratulations to Kwilena and Yongah for putting up such an

epic fight. Thanks to all the parents for the assistance given to set up and pack up, to the P & C for

providing our sausage sizzle and cake stall and to the teachers for adopting to this new style of carnival

with so much confidence and enthusiasm. Finally to the kids, you were all amazing.

FOOD PANTRY— CRAIGIE BAPTIST CHURCH

Craigie Baptist Church has a Food Pantry that is available all year round for times of need. Our Food Pantry is stocked with donated non-perishable food items such as pasta, pasta sauces & other meal sauces, rice, cereal & tinned vegetables as well as other various items.

There are two ways to access the Food Pantry 1. Drop in to the church on Tuesday’s during school term from 9am to 11am. 2. Call the church on (08) 9307 7509 and organise a time to come in. You’ll likely speak to Pastor James.

We do ask that, where possible, people make a small donation for the food taken. Please feel free to pass this on to friends and family you know who may benefit from the Food Pantry.

CHAPLAIN’S CHATTER:

CHAPLAIN’S CHAMPION:

Later this year my Grandchildren turn one and three. Being a Grandparent is a wonderful experience which I am thoroughly enjoying. I recall a conversation with a friend, who is also a Grandparent, where we talked about the changes we needed to make in our homes to ensure there were no dangers for these precious little lives. In thinking about this I have realised that at every stage of our children’s lives we need to get down to their level and look for danger or at least see things from their point of view. I’m not just referring to physical dangers but also to those things which could impact on the mental or emotional wellbeing of our children. Inappropriate TV programs, movies or computer games, news broadcasts, what they read, even conversations between adults about adult issues (children have an amazing ability to listen even when we think they are not) can all impact on young minds! The recent coverage of the earth quakes and hurricanes in Mexico and the USA are two examples of news which could be too disturbing for young children to see and hear. I’m not suggesting that we need to wrap our chil-dren up in cotton wool. They need to know what is hap-pening in our world but it is a parent’s responsibility to monitor the way they find out and how much they hear. Opportunities such as eating a meal together, travelling in the car or going for a walk can be used to talk to our kids about what is happening in the world and what they are thinking about. Hearing their concerns, validating their feelings and giving them another way to see things is an important part of being a parent.

Jenny Palandri

The Chaplain’s Champion from our Week 8 Assembly was Ruby from Miss Gamali and Miss Maxwell’s Year 2 class. Ruby is a role model to all the members of our school community. She exhibits our four expected behaviours at all times and is always considerate of others feelings. She completes her work to the highest standard and puts her own personal touches on all she does. Ruby should be commended for her caring nature; she is always helping others and makes sure to include others during both class and play times. She has a very active imagination and enjoys sharing her stories with the class. The expression in which she delivers her stories brings a smile to the face of those who are listening. Keep up the wonderful attitude in all you do Ruby, you are a treasure to have in the school community and an absolute joy to teach!

FUNDRAISING A big thank you to all those that helped out with this year’s Father’s Day Stall. The response was amazing with stock running out quickly. We raise over $500. Also thanks for all the cake donations and a huge thank you to all the volunteers at the sports carnival store. The sausage sizzle was again a great success raising over $1500.

Earn & Learn There is a little over one week to get your Woolworths earn and learn stickers in. We’ve collected over 120 forms full already. The more stickers we collect the more rewards for our school. Stickers can be dropped off in the box in the front office.
