PRINCIPAL’S WELCOME

Craigburn Primary School was established in 1982 and provides a highly effecHve educaHon for children fromRecepHon to Year 7. The school has awide catchment areawith families generally residing in the suburbsofFlagstaffHill,AberfoyleParkandCoromandelValley.Aschoolzonecurrentlyexiststoallowlocalchildrenfirstrightofenrolment.Weareproudlyaschoolofchoiceinourcommunity.

WehavehighexpectaHonsofstudentlearningoutcomesandthisisverymuchsupportedbyanenthusiasHcanddedicated teaching staff. These highly skilled staff bring a blend of experHse and experience, including ourspecialist teachers in the areas ofMusic / Performing Arts, German and Physical EducaHon. Other aspects ofschoollifearesupportedandmanagedbyourverycompetentschoolservicesofficers,anddepartmentalsupportpersonnelareinvitedtocontributeasrequired.

Students are accommodated in a combinaHon of brick buildings and transportable classrooms, some offeringflexible teaching spaces. Two playgrounds, two netball / basketball courts, an indoor mulHpurpose hall /gymnasiumandalargeovalprovideplayandsporHngareasforstudentsduringschoolHmeandfora_er-hoursschool sports.We also offer an Out Of School Hours programwhich provides a valued service for our parentcommunity.

The school curriculum is based on the Australian Curriculum and covers eight learning areas. Teachers workcollaboraHvelytoplanandprogramarichlearningexperiencewithanemphasisonthedevelopmentofliteracyandnumeracyskills,personalwellbeing,and,encouragementforallstudentstoachievetheirabsolutepersonalbestinlearning.ThereisawholeschoolapproachtousingInquiryLearningUnitsanddevelopingtheskillsof21stcenturylearners.Wearecertainlyproudofour“ProfessionalLearningCommunity”ethos.Weconsiderourschooltobeatthe“leadingedge”withourfocuson“LearningwithDigitalTechnologies"thatenhanceandaugmentthelearningexperiencesofchildren.OurBringYourOwniPadprogramiswellreceivedbythecommunity.

SupportandintervenHonprogramsarealsoofferedfromRecepHontoYear7.EachandeverychilddeservestobeinthemostsupporHvelearningenvironmentpossible,andweensurethatworkingtogetherwithparents,weaimtobuildandfosteradeep"loveoflearning”inallchildren.

ExtraCurricularAc=vi=esSAPSASA-StudentsinYears6&7,andinsomecasesYear5,havetheopportunitytoparHcipateinavarietyofSAPSASAsportsaspartofschoolbasedteamsorviaDistrictrepresentaHon.ThisinvolvementisoverandabovetherequiredclassroomcurriculumandisseenasanextracurriculaacHvity.AllstudentsareencouragedtoparHcipateinsomeformthroughoutthecourseoftheyear.StudentswhoparHcipateinSAPSASAeventsrepresentCraigburnPrimarySchool.Forthisreason,studentsmustbeabletodemonstrateanacceptablestandardofbehaviourduringnormalschoolHmesinordertobegiventhehonourofrepresenHngtheschool.

Sports-A_erSchoolHoursAt Craigburn, children in Year 2 become eligible to parHcipate in a_er-hours compeHHve school sports, inaccordance with the age-eligibility criteria of the various junior sporHng associaHons affiliated with DECD.Depending on the availability of coaches, the following sport opportuniHes are available for children in Year 2onwards:

PedalPrixPedalPrixisathreeeventseriesforsingleseatwheeledHumanPoweredVehicles(HPV).TheHPVseriesprovidesan environment in which young people can demonstrate innovaHon, risk taking, collaboraHve learning,confidence,appreciaHonandbehaviourappropriatetothespiritoftheevent.Year6/7studentsareabletonominateanexpressionofinterestforparHcipaHoninaschoolteam.Arequirementisthatparents/caregiverssupporttheprogram.

TournamentofMindsTournament of Minds (ToM) is a creaHve problem solving program for teams of students in the primary andsecondaryyearsofschooling.Teamssolvechallengesfromachoiceofdisciplinesincluding-AppliedTechnology,,LanguageLiterature,MathsEngineeringandSocialSciences.ToMaimstoenhancethepotenHalofouryouthbydeveloping diverse skills, enterprise, Hme management and the discipline to work collaboraHvely within acompeHHveenvironment.StudentsinYears6/7areabletonominatefortheschool’sToM’steam/sinTerm2wheretheyundertaketraininginpreparaHonfortheirsix-weekchallengeinTerm3leadingtoapresentaHononToMdayatFlindersUniversityinearlySeptember.

StudentSupportServices-SpecialNeedsIn addiHon to providing specialist staff support for some areas of study, students are given addiHonal supportwhererequiredwhichincludesSpecialNeedsProgram,LiteracyIntervenHonSupportProgram(LISP),NegoHatedEducaHonPlansand LearningPalsProgram.There is anemphasisonearly assistance for studentswho requireaddiHonal support in the first few years of schooling. Teachers regularly assess students using diagnosHcassessmenttoolstoassisttheminthisarea.ParentsareinformediftheirchildrequiresextraassistanceandareinvitedtoahendplanningmeeHngs.

LiteracyIntervenHonSupportProgram(LISP)-ThisisamulHsensoryandstructuredprogramdesignedforYear1and2studentswhoare‘atrisk’ofslippingbehindtheclassnormaldevelopmentalrateinliteracy.Theprogramis

designedinconsultaHonwiththeclassroomteacher,specialeducaHoncoordinatorandschoolsupportofficer,sothattheindividualneedsofstudentsaremet. Studentsaregivenintensiveone-to-onetuiHonfortwosessionsperweekover a periodof 10-12weeks. Through this intervenHonprogram students gain confidence, increasetheirself-esteemandskillsandstrategiesinreadingandwriHng.

NegoHatedEducaHonPlansAt Craigburn Primary we have several students on NegoHated EducaHon Plans. These students have beenidenHfiedbyourSpecialEducatororSpeechpathologistsashavingaphysical,intellectualorsensoryimpairmentand/ordisabiliHesincommunicaHonandlanguage.Significantsupport isrequiredinorderforthemtobenefitfromtheir learningexperiencesat school. Thestudentsarewithdrawn inaone-to-onesituaHon toworkonaspecificprogram.Thisprogramhasbeenspeciallydesigneda_eraprocessofdiscussionsanddecisionmakingoncurriculumprioriHesbysupportstaffandteachers.DifferenHaHon/CateringforHighAchieversStaff at Craigburn are commihed to supporHng all students achieve their highest possible learning outcomes.Teachers extend high achieving students through offering a rich and challenging curriculum, by uHlising higherorderthinkingskillsandalsoencouragingcreaHvity.Aswell,studentshavetheopportunitytoexpandtheirskillsinproviding leadership or supporHng otherswith their learning. DifferenHaHng the curriculum through extensionacHviHesandencouragingextra-curricularinvolvementisalsoimportant.

SwimmingandAqua=csAll RecepHon to Year 5 students parHcipate in one week of swimming lessons, which are run by qualifiedinstructors at the Marion Swimming Centre. All Year 6/7 students parHcipate in an aquaHcs program at PortNoarlungainTerm1.Thestudentstravelbybusunderthesupervisionoftheirteacherandqualifiedinstructorsrunthesessions.

Transi=ontoPrimarySchool-EarlyYearsParentsareinvitedtobringalongtheirchild/childrenforatouroftheschoolpriortomakingadecisiontoenrol.Inanefforttosupportachild'stransiHontoprimaryschooltheRecepHonTeachers,specialneedsstaff,alongwithamemberoftheleadershipteamworkcloselywiththelocalkindergartensandpreschoolstowelcomechildrenandparents to theschoolcommunityandensure they feel secure inand familiarwith theschoolenvironmentbeforestarHngschool.ThisincludesstaffvisiHngthekindergartenandgevngtoknowthekindergartenchildren.ChildrenareprovidedwithseveraltransiHonvisitstoschooltobecomeacquaintedwithotherstudents,teachers,the school environment and general rouHnes. TransiHon visits occur in Term 4, with specific dates and Hmescommunicatedtonewfamiliesbyleher.

AtthefirsttransiHonmeeHng,parents/caregiversareprovidedwithcurrentschoolinformaHonandaregivenabrief school tour.At subsequent transiHonmeeHngs,parents / caregiversmeetwithparentsand friendsof theschoolforawelcomingmorningtea.ThereisalsoanopportunitytomeetwithRecepHonteacherstolearnabouttheRecepHonlearningprogram.

StarHngSchoolAt Craigburn we recognise that all children begin school with different experiences, needs and energy levels.Childrenwilldevelopskillsin:

FirstWeekIn the first week of the school year, all RecepHon students have shortened days and stay at school up unHl12.00pm.Teachersusethea_ernoontomeetwithfamiliesatsetHmesforthesharingofinformaHonandbuildingofrelaHonships,whichhelpsestablishawelcomingenvironmentforthenewrecepHons.

Transi=ontoSecondarySchoolProgramsare inplacetosupportstudents'transiHontosecondaryschool.Craigburnsupportsandrecommendsthat studentsparHcipate in the transiHonprogramof their chosenschool. Liaisonwith secondary schools isanimportantpartwith linksbeingmadewiththemaintwofeederhighschools, inBlackwoodandAberfoylePark.KeyinformaHonisprovidedfromschoolswherestudentsarezonedtoahend.SchoolstaffatCraigburnareunabletoadviseonthequalityofprogramsofferedatspecificsecondaryschools,however,areabletosupportstudentsandparentsinapplyingforspecialinterestschoolsprovidingtheyarenoHfiedearly.

AnimalsEthicsTheCodeofPrac7cefortheUseandCareofAnimalsinSchoolsandEarlyChildhoodSeOngsisreferencedtoguideandpromotetheproperuseandcareofanimalsineducaHonprograms.AtallHmes,speakwithyourchild'sclassteacherbeforebringinganimalsontheschoolgrounds.

AnnualReportTheAnnualReportispreparedeachyearandreportstheschool'sachievementstotheschoolcommunity.CopiesareavailableattheAnnualGeneralMeeHngandcanbeviewedontheschoolwebsite.

AcquaintanceNightIn the first part of Term 1 each year, parents will be invited by their child's class teacher/s to ahend an'acquaintance night'. The purpose of this forum is to enable parents tomeet teachers and to have access toinformaHonaboutproceduresandplansfortheyear.

AssembliesWholeschoolassembliesareheldatleasttwiceaterm.ClassesalsoparHcipateinsecHonassembliescoordinatedbyteacherteams,withdatesandHmesadverHsedthroughclassandschoolnewslehers.Parentsareencouragedtoahendandcelebratestudentlearningandachievements.

AssessmentandRepor=ngTeachersassesschildren'sdevelopmentthroughinformalandformalmeans.ThisincludesobservaHonoflearningandcollecHngandanalysingstudentworksamplesoverHme.Bykeepingrecordsofstudentlearningteacherscanjudgewhatprogress isoccurringovertheyear.Student learning isformallysharedatforumssuchasthreewaylearningconferencesandatopennightsandinformallyastheneedarises.ReporHng to you about your child's progress will occur in both formal and informal ways. This may includeinformaHonbeingsharedthroughacommunicaHonbook/studentdiaryandthroughclassnewslehers.Youwillbeinvitedtoahenda3wayconference,andyouwillalsoreceivewrihenreportstwiceperyear.ForstudentsinYears 3, 5 and 7, Literacy and Numeracy tests results form part of the reporHng process. It is important thatparentsmakecontactwithclassteacherstodiscusstheirchild'sprogressifneeded.

ASendanceProceduresWewantallofourstudentstocometoschooleachandeveryday.WeknowthereisastrongcorrelaHonbetweenposiHveahendanceandachievement.Ifstudentsdomissschoolregularly,theycanmissoutonlearningthebasicskillsthatwillsetthemupforsuccessinthelateryearsofschool.WedoknowthatthereareHmeswhenastudentisnotabletoahendschool,includingforsickness,familyreasons,andforotherreasons,includingexempHonsfromschoolforfamilyholidays.

Weremindparents/caregiversoftheirresponsibiliHes:1. Parentstocooperatewiththeschoolprocedureofstudentarrivalanddeparture(detailsbelow).2. ParentstonoHfytheschoolofstudentabsences,withaspecificreasonegillness,injury,specialfamilyevent,

etc.Thismaybecommunicatedviaaphonecalltotheschool,anemaildl.1226.admin@schools.sa.edu.auorviaawrihennotetotheclassteachers.

3. Ifafamilyholidayhasbeenarrangedduringaschoolterm,anexempHonformmustbefilledoutandsignedbythePrincipal.Theseareavailableuponrequestfromthefrontoffice.

AtCraigburnwehaveproceduresinplacetomanage,monitorandsupportahendance–asperbelow.

ArrivingatSchoolChildrenhaveabeheropportunitytoperformwelliftheyarriveatschoolonHmeandareabletopreparefortheschoolday.Forthisreasonweaskallparents/caregiverstoensurethattheirchildrenarriveatschoolandareinclass ready to start by 8.50am. Children are not expected to arrive at school before 8.30am as supervision ofchildrenisnotprovidedunHlthisHme.

Teacherswillgenerallybeintheirclassroomsfrom8.40ameachdayandareavailableforaquickchatifnecessary.Makingappointmentswithteachers is thepreferredprocess for furtherteacher/parentdialogue.Childrenaresupervisedfrom8.30amunHl3.30pm.

ArrivingLateIfchildrenarearrivinglateatschool,theyarerequiredtoreporttothefrontofficeandrecordtheirarrival.Officestaffwillguideyoungerstudentsthroughthisprocess.

CollecHngChildrenEarlyIfyouwishyourchildtobereleasedearlyfromschool,it isessenHalthatyouinformtheteacherorfrontofficestaffasearlyaspossiblebeforeorpriortotheHmeearlycollecHonistooccur.Parents/caregiversneedtosignchildrenoutatthefrontoffice.StudentswillnotbepermihedtowalkunaccompaniedoutofourcaretomaketheirownwayhomeindependentlyduringschoolHme.Ifapersonotherthanaparent/caregiveriscollecHngachildfromschoolearly,theywillrequireanotefromtheparent/caregiverandmayneedtobeidenHfiedonthechild’sfileasanemergencycontact.

• RestoraHve pracHce. AmeeHng is arranged at which the person/s engaged in bullying are instructed tolisten to how their ‘target’ feels about the treatment. They are required to reflect uponwhat has beenhappeningandtoactrestoraHvely(egbymakinganacceptableapologytothoseoffended).

• Thesupportgroupmethod.Thetargetedpersonisinterviewedandanaccountofthedistressthathasbeenexperienced is communicated to those idenHfied as the bullies. This is done at ameeHng of the bulliesahendedalsobyselectedstudentswhoaresupporHveofthetargetperson.AllpresentatthemeeHngarerequiredtosayhowtheywillhelptoresolvetheproblem.Theoutcomeisthencarefullymonitored.

CybersafetyUseAgreementThemeasurestoensurethecyber-safetyofCraigburnPrimarySchoolarebasedonourcorevaluesofSelf-Worth,CaringandResponsibility.ToassistustoenhancelearningthroughthesafeuseofinformaHonandcommunicaHontechnologies(ICTs),wearenowaskingyoutoreadthisdocumentandcompletetheCybersafetyUseAgreementsecHonoftheParentConsents&AgreementForm.

Cyber-safety pracHces are in place, which include Cyber-Safety Use Agreements for staff and students. ChildprotecHoneducaHon,suchastheKeepingSafechildprotecHoncurriculum,includesinformaHonaboutremainingsafewhenusingnewtechnologies.

Thecomputernetwork,InternetaccessfaciliHes,computersandotherICTequipment/devicesbringgreatbenefitsto the teaching and learning programs at Craigburn, and to the effecHve operaHon of the school. The ICTequipment is for educaHonal purposes appropriate to this environment, whether it is owned or leased eitherparHallyorwhollybytheschool,andusedonoroffthesite.

At Craigburnweaim to create andmaintain a cyber-safety culture that is in keepingwithour values andwithlegislaHve and professional obligaHons.
