• Read the instructions carefully. Be familiar with the controls and proper use ofthe unit.

Do not operate this unit when tired, ill, or under the influence of alcohol,drugs, or medication.Children and teens under the age of 15 must not use the unit, except forteens guided by an adult.All guards and safety attachments must be installed properly before operatingthe unit.

Inspect the unit before use. Replace damaged parts. Check for fuel leaks.Make sure all fasteners are in place and secure. Replace parts that arecracked, chipped, or damaged in any way. Do not operate the unit with looseor damaged parts.Carefully inspect the area before starting the unit. Remove all debris and hardor sharp objects such as glass, wire, etc.

Clear the area of children, bystanders, and pets. At a minimum, keep allchildren, bystanders, and pets outside a 50 feet (15 m.) radius; there still maybe a risk to bystanders from thrown objects. Bystanders should beencouraged to wear eye protection. If approached, stop the unit immediately.

Use only Craftsman Hassle-Free TM XTRA QUIET Spiral Line as replacementline. Never use metal-reinforced line, wire or rope. These can break off andbecome dangerous projectiles.

Squeeze the throttle control and check that it returns automatically to the idleposition. Make all adjustments or repairs before using unit.

SAFETY WARNINGS FOR GAS UNITS

-- 1_L_ WARNING: Gasoline is highly flammable and its vapors canexplode if ignited. Take the following precautions:

Store fuel only in containers specifically designed and approved for thestorage of such materials.

Avoid creating a source of ignition for spilled fuel. Do not start the engine untilfuel vapors dissipate.Always stop the engine and allow it to cool before filling the fuel tank. Neverremove the cap of the fuel tank, or add fuel, when the engine is hot. Neveroperate the unit without the fuel cap securely in place. Loosen the fuel tankcap slowly to relieve any pressure in the tank.

Add fuel in a clean, well-ventilated outdoor area where there are no sparks orflames. Slowly remove the fuel cap only after stopping engine. Do not smokewhile fueling. Wipe up any spilled fuel from the unit immediately. Always wipeunit dry before using.

Move the unit at least 30 feet (9.1 m) from the fueling source and site beforestarting the engine. Do not smoke or allow sparks and open flames near thearea while adding fuel or operating the unit.

WHILE OPERATING

Never start or run the unit inside a closed room or building. Breathing exhaustfumes can kill. Operate this unit only in a well ventilated outdoor area.

Be aware of the risk of injury to the head, hands and feet.

Wear safety glasses or goggles that are marked as meeting ANSI Z87.1-1989standards. Also wear ear/hearing protection when operating this unit. Wear aface or dust mask if the operation is dusty. Long sleeve shirts arerecommended.

Wear heavy, long pants, boots and gloves. Do not wear loose clothing,jewelry, short pants, sandals or go barefoot. Secure hair above shoulder level.

The cutting attachment shield must always be in place while operating theunit. Do not operate unit without both trimming lines extended, and the properline installed. Do not extend the trimming line beyond the length of the shield.

This unit has a clutch. The cutting attachment remains stationary when theengine is idling. If it does not, have the unit adjusted by an authorized servicetechnician.

Adjust the D-handle position that will provide the best grip.

• Donotoperatetheenginefasterthanthespeedneededtocut,trimoredge.Donotruntheengineathighspeedwhennotcutting.Alwaysstoptheenginewhencuttingisdelayedorwhenwalkingfromonecuttinglocationtoanother.Ifstrikingorbecomingentangledwithaforeignobject,stoptheengineimmediatelyandcheckfordamage.Donotoperatebeforerepairingdamage.Donotoperatetheunitwithlooseordamagedparts.Stopandswitchtheenginetooffformaintenance,repair,orforchangingthecuttingattachmentorotherattachments.

If this Craftsman product fails due to a defect in material or workmanship within two years from the date of purchase, return it to any Sears store, Parts andRepair Service Center, or other Craftsman outlet in the United States for free repair (or replacement if repair proves impossible).This warranty applies for only 90 days if this product is ever used for commercial or rental purposes.

This warranty covers ONLY defects in material and workmanship. Sears will NOT pay for:

ADJUSTING THE D-HANDLE

1. Loosen the screws on the D-handle (Fig. 1).

2. While holding the unit in theoperating position (Fig. 13),position the D-handle to thelocation that provides thebest grip.

3. Tighten the clamp screwsevenly, until the D-handle issecure.

2. Take the 2 shield screws andscrew each one into the

shield until finger tight. Fig. 23. Using an appropriate screw

driver, tighten the screws until the shield is firmly in place. Make surethe screws are tightened equally so there is a balanced gap betweenthe bracket and the shield on each side.

OPERATING THE CONVERTIBLE TM COUPLER SYSTEM

_ ARNING: Before beginning the use of any attachment, readand understand the manual that came with the attachment. Followall safety information contained within.

_ ARNING: These attachments are to be snapped into theprimary hole only. Using the wrong hole could lead to personalinjury or damage to the unit.

WARNING: Before operating this unit, be sure that the release ibutton is fully snapped into the primary hole (Fig. 4), and that the Jknob (Fig. 5) is securely tightened.

NOTE: To make installing orremoving the attachmenteasier, place the unit onthe ground or on a workbench.

1. Turn knob counterclockwiseto loosen (Fig. 5).

2. While firmly holding theattachment, push it straightinto the Convertible TM

coupler until the releasebutton snaps firmly into theprimary hole (Fig. 4).

NOTE: Aligning the releasebutton with the guiderecess will helpinstallation (Fig. 3).

3. Turn the knob clockwise totighten (Fig. 5).

NOTE: When using anattachment for edgingpurposes, lock theattachment releasebutton into the 90 ° hole

(Fig. 5).

L__ ARNING: OVERFILLING OIL CRANKCASE MAY CAUSE

SERIOUS PERSONAL INJURY. Check and maintain the proper oillevel in the crankcase; it is important and cannot beoveremphasized. Check the oil before each use and change it asneeded. See Checking the Oil in the Maintenance Section of thismanual.

RECOMMENDED OiL TYPE

Using the proper type and weight of oil in the crankcase is extremely important.Check the oil before each use and change the oil regularly. Failure to use thecorrect oil, or using dirty oil, can cause premature engine wear and failure.

Use a high-quality SAE 30 weight oil of API (American Petroleum Institute)service class SF, SG, SH.ADDING OiL TO CRANKCASE: iNiTiAL USE

NOTE: This unit is shipped without oil. In order to avoid damage to theunit, put oil in the crankcase before attempting to start the unit.

The unit is supplied with one 3.04 fl.oz. (90 ml) bottle of SAE 30 SF, SG, SHoil (Fig. 6).NOTE: Save the bottle of oil. It can be used to measure the correct

amount during future oil changes. See Changing the Oil.

1. Unscrew the top of the bottleof oil and remove the paperseal covering the opening.Replace the top. Next, cutthe tip off the funnel spout(Fig. 6).

4. Pour the entire bottle of oil

into the oil fill hole (Fig. 7). Fig. 6NOTE: Never add oil to the fuel

or fuel tank.

5. Wipe up any oil that mayhave spilled and reinstall theoil fill plug.

NOTE: This is a four cycleengine. In order to avoiddamage to the unit, do O-Ringnot mix oil with

Today's fuels are often a blend of

gasoline and oxygenates such as Fig. 8ethanol, methanol or MTBE (ether).Alcohol-blended fuel absorbs water. As little as 1% water in the fuel can makefuel and oil separate or form acids when stored. Use fresh fuel (less than 30days old), when using alcohol-blended fuel.

Using Blended FuelsIf choosing to use a blended fuel, or its use is unavoidable, followrecommended precautions:• Always use fresh unleaded gasoline

• Use the fuel additive STA-BIL@ or an equivalent

• Drain tank and run the engine dry before storing unit

WARNING: Gasoline is extremely flammable. Ignited vapors

may explode. Always stop the engine and allow it to cool beforefilling the fuel tank. Do not smoke while filling the tank. Keepsparks and open flames at a distance from the area.

WARNING: Add fuel in a clean, well ventilated outdoor area. Wipe

up any spilled fuel immediately. Avoid creating a source of ignition forspilt fuel. Do not start the engine until fuel vapors dissipate.

Using Fuel AdditivesThe use of fuel additives, such as STA-BIL® Gas Stabilizer or an equivalent, willinhibit corrosion and minimize the formation of gum deposits. Using a fuel additivecan keep fuel from forming harmful deposits in the carburetor for up to six (6)months. Add 0.8 fl.oz. (23 ml) of fuel additive per gallon of fuel according to theinstructions on the fuel additive container. NEVER add fuel additives directly to theunit's gas tank.

1. Remove the fuel cap (Fig. 9).

2. Place the gas container's _ _/_'_/_//"--_"_.spout into the fill hole on thefuel tank (Fig. 9) and fill thetank.

NOTE: Do not overfill the tank.

3. Wipe up any gasoline thatmay have spilled.

NOTE: This unit uses the Incredi=PulF M starting system, which

significantly reduces the effort required to start the engine.

There is no harsh resistance when pulling the starter rope. Be

aware that this starting method is vastly different from (and

much easier than) previous starting techniques.

STARTING INSTRUCTIONS

1. Check the oil level in thecrankcase. Refer toChecking the Oil Level.

2. Fill the fuel tank with fresh,clean unleaded gasoline.Refer to Fueling the Unit.

NOTE: There is no need to turnthe unit on. The On/OffControl is in the ON (I)position at all times(Fig. 10).

IF COLD... For cold weatherconditions (below 40°F),flip the Cold Weather StartLever (Fig. 11)down to thestart/closed position andcontinue to step 3. DONOT flip this lever down ifthe temperature is above40°E

3. Fully press and release theprimer bulb 10 times, slowly.Some amount of fuel shouldbe visible in the primer bulb(Fig. 11). If fuel cannot be

seen in the bulb, press and release the bulb until fuel is visible.4. With the unit in the starting position, do not squeeze the throttle control

(Fig. 12). Pull the starter rope in a controlled motion until unit starts.IF COLD... For cold weather conditions (below 40°F), flip the Cold Weather

Start Lever back up to the run/open position after the unit hasstarted and before squeezing the throttle control.

5. Once the unit starts, wait 60 seconds and then squeeze the throttle control.

6. Continue squeezing the Startingthrottle control for an Positionadditional 30 to 60 seconds tolet the engine warm up. Theunit may be used during thistime.

IE.. The engine does not start,go back to step 3.

IE.. The engine stops whilesqueezing the throttle,go back to step 4. Throttle Control

Press and hold the On/Off Control in the OFF (O) position until the unitcomes to a complete stop. (Fig. 10)

STARTING INSTRUCTIONS

1. Check the oil level in the crankcase. Refer to Checking the Oil Level.

2. Fill the fuel tank with fresh, clean unleaded gasoline. Refer to Fueling the Unit.NOTE: There is no need to turn the unit on. The On/Off Control is in the

ON (I) position at all times (Fig. 10).IF COLD... For cold weather conditions (below 40°F), flip the Cold Weather

Start Lever (Fig. 11) down to the start/closed position and continue tostep 3. DO NOT flip this lever down if the temperature is above 40°R

3. Fully press and release the primer bulb 10 times, slowly. Some amountof fuel should be visible in the primer bulb (Fig. 11). If fuel cannot be seenin the bulb, press and release the bulb until fuel is visible.

4. With the unit in the starting position (Fig. 12). Place the Plug-In PowerStart or Power Bit Start into the back of the unit. Refer to Operationsection of the Plug-In Power Start or Power Bit Start operator's manual.

5. Do Not squeeze the throttle control, press and hold the Plug-InPower Start or drill's ON (I) button for 2 second intervals until unitstarts.

IF COLD... For cold weather conditions (below 40°F), flip the Cold WeatherStart Lever back up to the run/open position.

6. Once the unit starts, remove the Plug-In Power Start or drill from therear of the unit and wait 60 seconds; then squeeze the throttle control.

7. Continue squeezing the throttle control for an additional 30 to 60 secondsto let the engine warm up. The unit may be used during this time.

IF,.. The engine does not start, go back to step 3.IF... The engine stops while squeezing the throttle, go back to step 4.STOPPING INSTRUCTIONS

1. Release the throttle control and allow the engine to cool down by idling.2. Press and hold the On/Off Control in the OFF (O) position until the unit

comes to a complete stop. (Fig. 10)

HOLDING THE TRIMMER

6. Correctly installed line will be the same length on both sides.NOTE: Make sure that when installing new line, that the line is as close to

even as possible. Any variation in lengths may cause the unit tovibrate excessively. If this happens, stop the unit and make surethe line is even.

7. Repeat steps 4 thru 6 to install the second trimmer line.NOTE: Do not rest the Hassle-Free TM PLUS Cutting Head on the ground

while the unit is running.Some line breakage will occur from:

• Entanglement with foreign matter

• Normal line fatigue• Attempting to cut thick, stalky weeds

• Forcing the line into objects such as walls or fence posts

NOTE: During normal use the trimming line may become worn unevenly whichmay cause excessive vibrations in the unit. If this becomesuncomfortable or uncontrollable, stop the unit and replace the line. Referto the Line Replacement instructions above.

CHECKING THE OiL LEVEL

_L_ ARNING: To avoid serious personal injury, always turn theunit off and allow it to cool before cleaning or maintaining it.

The importance of checking andmaintaining the proper oil level inthe crankcase cannot beoveremphasized. Check oil beforeeach use:

1. Stop the engine and allow oil f

to drain into the crankcase.2. Place the engine on a flat,

level surface with thecutting head shield hangingoff a work bench or table to

get a proper oil level reading Add 1.4-1.5 Oz.(Fig. 18).

3. Keep dirt, grass clippings andother debris out of the engine.Clean the area around the oilfill plug before removing it.

4. Remove the oil fill plug.5. Look into the oil fill hole; use

a flashlight if needed. The oilshould be just touching theinnermost thread (Fig. 19).

6. If the oil level is not touchingthe innermost thread on the oilfill hole, add a small amount of oil Fill Plug _,oil to the oil fill hole andrecheck (Fig. 19). Repeat thisprocedure until the oil levelreaches the innermost thread

on the oil fill hole. O-RingNOTE: Do not overfill the unit.

NOTE: Make sure the O-ring is Oil Fillin place on the oil fill plug Holewhen checking andchanging the oil (Fig. 20).

For a new engine, change the oil after the first 10 hours of operation. Changethe oil while the engine is still warm. The oil will flow freely and carry awaymore impurities.

1. Remove the oil fill plug.2. Pour the oil out of the oil fill

hole and into a container bytipping the unit to a verticalposition (Fig. 21). Allowample time for completedrainage.

3. Wipe up any oil residue onthe unit and clean up any oilthat may have spilled.Dispose of the oil accordingto Federal, State and localregulations.

4. Refill the crankcase with3.04 fl.oz. (90 ml) of SAE 30SF, SG, SH oil.

NOTE: Use the bottle andspout saved from initialoil fill to measure thecorrect amount of oil.The top of the label onthe bottle measuresapproximately 3.04 fl.oz.(90 ml) (Fig. 23). Checkthe level, See Checkingthe Oil Level. If the levelis low, add a smallamount of oil andrecheck. Do not overfill(Fig. 22).

5. Replace the oil fill plug.6. Reconnect the spark plug boot.AIR FILTER MAINTENANCE

Air Fiffer CoverCleaning the Air Filter

Clean and re-oil the air filter every10 hours of operation. It is an ,important item to maintain. Failure'to maintain the air filter properlycan result in poor performance orcan cause permanent damage tothe engine.

1. Open the air filter cover. Pushthe tab on the underside ofthe cover inward. Then pullthe air filter cover out and up.(Fig. 24).

2. Remove the air filter(Fig. 28).

3. Wash the filter in detergentand water (Fig. 25). Rinse thefilter thoroughly and allow it todry.

4. Apply enough clean SAE 30motor oil to lightly coat thefilter (Fig. 26).

5. Squeeze the filter to spreadand remove excess oil (Fig. 27).

6. Replace the filter (Fig. 28).

NOTE: If operating the unitwithout the air filter,WILL VOiD the warranty.

7. Reinstall the air filter cover.

Position the slots on the topof the air filter cover onto thetabs at the top of the backplate(Fig. 24).

8. Swing the cover down untilthe tab on the air filterbackplate snaps into place inthe slot on the air filter cover(Fig. 24).

Old fuel is usually the reason for improper unit performance. Drain and refill the tankwith fresh fuel prior to making any adjustments. Refer to Oil and Fuel Information.Second, Clean Air Filter

The condition of the air filter is important to the operation of the unit. A dirtyair filter will restrict air flow. This is often mistaken for an out of adjustmentcarburetor. Check the condition of the air filter before adjusting the idlespeed screw. Refer to Air Filter Maintenance.

Third, Adjust Idle Speed Screw

_ ARNING: The cutting attachment may spin during idle speed Jadjustments. Wear protective clothing and observe all safetyinstructions to prevent serious personal injury.

If, after checking the fuel and cleaning the air filter, the engine still will notidle, adjust the idle speed screw as follows:

1. Start the engine and let it run at a high idle for a minute to warm up.Refer to Starting/StoppingInstructions. Idle Adjustment

let the engine idle. If the enginestops, insert a small phillipsscrewdriver in between the AirFilter Cover and the EngineCover (Fig. 29). Turn the idlespeed screw in, clockwise, 1/8of a turn at a time (as needed)

should not rotate when the engine idles.3. If the cutting attachment rotates when the engine idles, turn the idle

speed screw counterclockwise 1/8 of a turn at a time (as needed), toreduce idle speed.

Checking the fuel, cleaning the air filter, and adjusting the idle speed shouldsolve most engine problems. If not and any of the following are true have theunit serviced by a Sears or other qualified service dealer:

• the engine will not idlethe engine hesitates or stalls on acceleration

NOTE: Inspect the valve to rocker arm clearance with a feeler gauge afterthe first 10 hours of operation and every 25 hours of operation.

The engine must be cold when checking or adjusting the valve clearance.

This task should be performed inside, in a clean, dust free area.

1. Remove the six (6) screws on the back of the engine cover with a Flat-head or T-25 Torx screwdriver (Fig. 30).

2. Disconnect the spark plug wire.3. Clean dirt from around the View of the Rear Engine Cover

spark plug. Remove the sparkplug from the cylinder head byturning a 5/8 in. socket Screwscounterclockwise. Screws

4. Remove the engine cover(Fig. 30).

5. Clean dirt from around therocker arm cover. Remove

the screw holding the rocker Fig. 30arm cover with a large flatblade screwdriver or Torx T-25 bit (Fig. 30). Remove the rocker armcover and gasket.

6. Pullthestarterropeslowlytobringthepistontothetopofitstravel,(knownastopdeadcenter).Checktoseeif:

• Thepistonisatthetopofitstravel.Thisshouldbedonebylookingintothesparkplughole.(Fig.31)Bothrockerarmsmovefreely,andbothvalvesareclosed

7. Slide the feeler gauge between the rocker arm and the valve return spring.Measure the clearance between the valve stem and rocker arm (Fig. 33).Measure both the intake and exhaust valves.

The recommended clearance for both intake and exhaust is .003 - .006 in.

(.076 - 0.152 rnrn}. Use a standard automotive .005 in. (0.127 rnrn} feelergauge. The feeler gauge should slide between the rocker arm and valve stemwith a slight amount of resistance, without binding. See Figures 32 and 33.

8. If the clearance is not withinspecification:

a. Turn the adjusting nut using a5/16 inch (8 mm) wrench ornut driver (Fig. 33).To increase clearance, turnthe adjusting nutcounterclockwise.

b. Recheck both clearances,and adjust as necessary.

9. Reinstall the rocker armcover using a new gasket.Torque the screw to 20-30inolb (2.2-3.4 Nora).

10. Check the spark plug andreinstall. See Replacing theSpark Plug.

11. Replace the spark plug wire.12. Reinstall the engine cover.

Use a replacement Champion ® #RDZ4H spark plug. The correct air gapis 0.025 in. (0.635 turn). Remove the plug after every 25 hours of operationand check its condition. I I1. Stop the engine and allow it

to cool. Remove the six (6)screws on the back of theengine cover with a Flat-head or T-25 Torxscrewdriver (Fig. 30).

2. Grasp the plug wire firmly /and pull the cap from the 0.025 in. _

spark plug. (0.635 ram) t3. Clean dirt from around the

spark plug. Remove the spark Fig. 34plug from the cylinder head by turning a 5/8 in. socket counterclockwise.

3. Pull the tab on the spark arrestor cover out of the muffler. Remove thespark arrestor cover.

4. Remove the spark arrestor screen from the spark arrestor cover.5. Clean the spark arrestor screen with a wire brush or replace it.

6. Reinstall the spark arrestor screen, spark arrestor cover and screws.CLEANING

Use a small brush to clean off the outside of the unit. Do not use strongdetergents. Household cleaners that contain aromatic oils such as pine andlemon, and solvents such as kerosene, can damage plastic housing or handle.Wipe off any moisture with a soft cloth.STORAGE

Never store the unit with fuel in the tank where fumes may reach an openflame or spark.Allow the engine to cool before storing.

Lock up the unit to prevent unauthorized use or damage.

Store the unit in a dry, well-ventilated area.Store the unit out of the reach of children.

LONG TERM STORAGE

1. Drain all gasoline from the gas tank into a container. Do not use gasthat has been stored for more than 30 days. Dispose of the old gasolinein accordance to Federal, State, and Local regulations.

2. Start the engine and allow it to run until it stalls. This ensures that allgasoline has been drained from the carburetor.

3. Allow the engine to cool. Remove the spark plug and put 5 drops ofhigh quality motor oil into the cylinder. Pull the starter rope slowly todistribute the oil. Reinstall the spark plug.

NOTE: Remove the spark plug and drain all of the oil from the cylinderbefore attempting to start the trimmer after storage.

4. Change the oil, referring to Changing the Oil. Dispose of the old oil inaccordance to Federal, State and Local regulations.

5. Thoroughly clean the unit and inspect for any loose or damaged parts.Repair or replace damaged parts and tighten loose screws, nuts orbolts. The unit is ready for storage.

TRANSPORTING

Allow the engine to cool before transporting.Secure the unit while transporting.

Drain the gas tank before transporting.

Tighten gas cap before transporting.

4. Replace cracked, fouled or dirty spark plug. Set the air gap at 0.025 in.(0.635 turn} using a feeler gauge (Fig. 34).

5. Install a correctly-gapped spark plug in the cylinder head. Turn the 5/8in. socket clockwise until snug.

Antes de Ilenar el tanque de combustible, apague siempre el motor y espereque se enfrie. No retire nunca la tapa del tanque de combustible ni carguecombustible mientras el motor est6 caliente. No opere nunca la unidad sin latapa del combustible colocada firmemente en su lugar. Afloje la tapa delcombustible lentamente para disipar la presi6n del tanque.

• Evite crear una fuente de encendido por combustible derramado. Noarranque el motor hasta que se hayan disipado los vapores del combustible.

DURANTE LA OPERACION

= No arranque ni opere la unidad en una sala o edificio cerrado. • La protecci6n accesoria de corte debe estar siempre colocada en su lugarmientras opere la unidad. No opere la unidad con las dos lineas de corteextendidas, y la Iinea correcta instalada. No extienda la linea de corte mas aliade la Iongitud de la protecci6n.

• Esta unidad cuenta con un embrague. El accesorio de corte permaneceestacionario cuando el motor esta en marcha lenta. Si no Io hace, haga ajustarla unidad pot un t6cnico de servicio autorizado.

Ajuste la manija a su tama_o de modo que le brinde el mejor agarre.• AsegQrese de que el accesorio de corte no estA en contacto con ningQn

objeto antes de arrancar la unidad.• Use la unidad Qnicamente con la luz del dia o con buena luz artificial.

• Evite arrancar la unidad accidentalmente. Col6quese en posici6n de iniciosiempre que tire de la cuerda de arranque. El operador y la unidad deben estaren una posici6n estable al comenzar. Lea las instrucciones de Arranque yApagado.

• Use la herramienta adecuada. No use esta unidad para ninguna tarea para lacual no ha sido dise_ada.

TIPO DE ACEITE RECOMENDADO

El use de un aceite del tipo y peso correctos en el cig0efial es extremadamenteimportante. Verifique el aceite antes de cada use y cambie el aceite confrecuencia. Si no usa el aceite correcto, o utiliza aceite sucio, puede causar eldesgaste y falla prematuros del motor. Use un aceite de buena calidad SAE 30de API (American Petroleum Institute) clase de servicio SG, SF, SH.CARGA DE ACEITE EN EL CARTER DEL CIGOEI_IAL: use INICIAL

NOTA: Esta unidad se envia sin carga de aceite. A fin de evitar el dafio dela unidad, cargue aceite en el carter del cigQefial antes de intentararrancar la unidad.

Su unidad trae una botella de aceite SAE 30 SF, SG, SH de 90 ml (3,04 onzasfluidas) (Fig. 6).

NOTA: Guarde la botella para medir la cantidad correcta de aceitecuando deba cambiarloen el future. Lea Cambio

1. Desenrosque la tapa de labotella de aceite y retire elsello de papel que cubre laapertura. Vuelva a colocar latapa. Corte la punta de laboquilla del embudo (Fig. 6). Boquilla del

El combustible viejo es la causa Anillo enprincipal del mal funcionamiento "O"de la unidad. AsegQrese de usarcombustible nuevo, limpio y sin Orificie deplomo. Elimine la gasolina vieja Ilenado dede acuerdo a los reglamentos aceitefederales, estatales y locales.NOTA: Este es un motor de Fig. 8

cuatro ciclos. Para evitar dafiar su unidad, no mezcle el aceite conla gasolina.

Definici6n de los combustibles de mezcla

Los combustibles actuales con frecuencia son una mezcla de gasolina y uno om&s oxigenantes como el etano, el metanol o el MTBE (6ter). El combustible conmezcla de alcohol absorbe agua. Un porcentaje de agua tan pequefio como el1% en el combustible puede hacer que el combustible y el aceite se separen.Se forman &cidos mientras est& guardado. Cuando use combustible con mezclade alcohol, use combustible nuevo (almacenado durante menos de 30 dias).Use de los combustibles de mezcla

Si decide usar un combustible de mezcla o si su use es inevitable, lerecomendamos que tome las siguientes precauciones:

• Use siempre una mezcla fresca de combustible segQn Io indica sumanual del operador

• Use un aditivo de combustible estabilizador de gasolina

Drene el tanque y haga funcionar el motor en seco antes de guardar la unidad

Uso de aditJvos en el combustible

El uso de un estabilizador de gasolina impedirA la corrosi6n y reducir& alminimo la formaci6n de dep6sitos de resina. El uso de aditivos puede evitarque se formen dep6sitos da5inos en el carburador por hasta sais (6) meses.Agregue 23 ml (0,8 de onza) de aditivo por gal6n de combustible de acuerdoalas instrucciones del envase. 3. Oprima completamente ylibere la pera del cebador 10veces, lentamente. Deberaverse alguna cantidad decombustible en la pera delcebador (Fig. 11). Si nopuede ver combustible en lapera, oprima y suelte la peratantas veces como seanecesario hasta que veacombustible en la misma.

2. Llene el tanque de combustible con gasolina sin plomo limpia y fresca.Consulte C6mo Ilenar la unidad de combustible.

NOTA: No hay necesidad de arrancar la unidad. Elcontrol de Encendido/Apagado esta en la posici6n ENCENDIDO (I)en todo momento (Fig. 10).

4. Con la unidad en la posici6n de arranque (Fig. 12). Ponga el comienzoenchufable de la energia o el comienzo del pedacito de energia en laparte posterior de la unidad. Refiera a la secci6n de la operaci6n delmanual enchufable del operador del comienzo de la energia odelcomienzo del pedacito de energia.

5. No exprima el control de valvula reguladora, no presione y no celebre elcomienzo o el taladro enchufable de la energia ARRANQUE (I) el bot6npara 2 segundos intervalos hasta que la unidad comience.

INSPECOION DEL NIVEL DE AOEITE

No podemos exagerar laimportancia de verificar ymantener el nivel correcto de

aceite en el carter del cigQe_al.Inspeccione el nivel de aceiteantes de cada uso:

1. Apague el motor y permitaque el aceite drene dentrodel carter del cigOeRal.

2. Coloque el motor sobre unasuperficie plana y nivelada,con el protector de la cabezade corte colgando de unbanco o mesa de trabajopara obtener una lecturaadecuada del nivel de aceite(Fig. 18).

3. Mantenga la suciedad,recortes de c6sped, etc.,fuera del motor. Limpie elArea alrededor del tap6n deIlenado de aceite antes deretirarlo.

4. Retire el tap6n de aceite yseque el aceite. Vuelva ainsertarlo completamentehacia adentro.

5. La mirada en el petr61eo Ilenahoyo, utiliza una linterna sinecesitado. El petr61eo debeestar tocando apenas lasinteriores la mayoria de loshilos (Fig. 19).

6. Si el nivel de aceite no est&tocando la rosca mas interiordel agujero de Ilenar aceite,afiada una pequefia cantidadal agujero de Ilenar aceite y

NOTA: No Ilene demasiado la unidad.

NOTA: Verifique que el anillo en O est6 en su lugar en el tap6n de aceitecuando mida y cambie el aceite (Fig. 20).

CAMBIO DEL ACEITE

-- i_L_ RECAUCION: Use guantes para evitar sufrir lesionescuando maneje la unidad.

En un motor nuevo, cambie el aceite despu6s de las 10 primeras horas deoperaci6n. Cambie el aceite mientras el motor aQn estA caliente. El aceitefluirA con libertad y Ilevara mas impurezas.

1. Retire el tap6n de aceite.

2. Vierta el aceite fuera delorificio de Ilenado de aceite enun recipiente inclinando launidad hasta una posici6nvertical (Fig. 21). Dejesuficiente tiempo como paracompletar el drenaje.

3. Seque todo el aceite residualde la unidad y limpie todo elaceite que pueda habersederramado. Elimine todo elaceite de acuerdo con lasnormas federales, estatales ylocales.

4. Vuelva a cargar el carter delcigOe_al con 90 ml(3,04 onzas fluidas) de aceiteSAE 30 SF, SG, SH.

NOTA: Use la botella y la boquillaque guardo del uso inicialpara medir la cantidadcorrecta. El nivel de 90 ml(3,04 onzas) est,,aproximadamente en laparte superior de laetiqueta de la botella(Fig. 23). Mida el nivel conla varilla de medici6n. Si elnivel est,, bajo, agregueuna pequefia cantidad deaceite y vuelva a medir(Fig. 22). No Io Ilenedemasiado.

5. Vuelva a colocar el tap6n deaceite.

_L_[ DVERTENCIA: Para evitar graves lesiones personales,apague siempre su recortador y espere que se enfrie antes delimpiarlo o realizar todo tipo de mantenimiento.

Limpieza del filtro de aire Cubierta del filtroLimpie y vuelva a aceitar el filtro de de aireaire cada 10 horas de operaci6n.Es una de las partes cuyomantenimiento es importante. Nomantener debidamente su filtro de

aire puede resultar enfuncionamiento inadecuado o

puede causar dafio permanente a Orejetasu motor.

1. Abra la tapa del filtro de aire. Fig. 24Empuje hacia adentro la / .lengQeta que esta en ladoinferior de la tapa. Despueshale hacia afuera y arriba latapa del filtro de aire. (Fig. 24).

NOTA: Es posible que debaretirar la tapa decombustible para poderretirar por completo lacubierta del filtro de aire.

2. Retire el filtro de aire (Fig. 28). Fig. 25

3. Lave el filtro con agua ydetergente (Fig. 25).Enjuague bien el filtro yd6jelo secar.

4. Aplique suficiente aceitelimpio de motor SAE 30 pararecubrir ligeramente el filtro(Fig. 26).

5. Apriete el filtro para esparciry retirar el exceso de aceite Fig. 26(Fig. 27).

6. Vuelva a colocar el filtro (Fig. 28).NOTA:

Filtro de aire

Si opera la unidad sin el filtro de aire, su garantia serA ANULADA.

7. Instale de nuevo la tapa delfiltro de aire. Haga coincidirlas ranuras que hay en laparte superior de la tapa delfiltro de aire con laslengOetas de la partesuperior de la placa posterior(Fig. 24).

8. Gire la tapa hacia abajohasta que la lengQeta de laplaca posterior del filtro de Fig. 27aire se enganche en la ranurade la tapa del filtro de aire(Fig. 24).

AJUSTE DE LA VELOClDAD DEMARCHA EN VACIO

La velocidad minima del motorpuede ser ajustada. Puede teneracceso al tornillo de ajuste deminima a trav6s de un orificio enla parte superior de la cubierta delmotor (Fig. 29). Fig. 28

NOTA: Los ajustes descuidados pueden da_ar su motor seriamente.Aparte de la velocidad de marcha en vacio, los ajustes alcarburador deberAn ser hechos solamente por un distribuidorSears u otro distribuidor de servicio calificado.

Primero, Inspecci6n del Combustible

En general, el combustible viejo es el motivo principal para que la unidad nofuncione en forma adecuada. Drene y vuelva a Ilenar el tanque concombustible nuevo, limpio y sin plomo antes de hacer ningQn ajuste.Consulte la Informaci6n acerca del Aceite y Combustible.Segundo, Lirnpieza del Filtro de Aire

La condici6n del filtro de aire es importante para el funcionamiento de launidad. Un filtro de aire sucio limitar& el flujo de aire y cambiar& la mezcla deaire y combustible. Con frecuencia esto se confunde con un carburadorfuera de ajuste. Inspeccione la condici6n del filtro de aire antes de ajustar eltornillo de velocidad minima. Consulte la secci6n de Mantenimiento delFiltro de Aire.

Tercero, Ajuste del Tornillo de Velocidad Minima

_ DVERTENCIA: AI apagar la unidad, asegQrese de que el |accesorio de corte se haya detenido antes de apoyar la unidad ]para prevenir graves lesiones personales.

Si despues de inspeccionar el combustible y limpiar el filtro de aire el motoraQn no funciona en minima, ajuste el tornillo de velocidad minima segQn seindica a continuaci6n. Tornillo de ajuste de1. Arranque el motor y d6jelo minima

funcionar a una minima altadurante un minuto para quese caliente.

2. Suelte el gatillo del reguladory deje que el motor funcioneen minima. Si el motor separa, inserte undestornillador Phillipspeque_o en el orificio de la Fig. 29cubierta del motor (Fig. 29). Gire el tornillo de minima hacia adentro, ensentido horario, de a 1/8 de vuelta por vez (segOn sea necesario) hastaque el motor funcione en minima suavemente.

NOTA: El accesorio de corte no debe girar cuando el motor est&funcionando en minima.

3. Si el accesorio de corte gira cuando el motor esta funcionando en minima,gire el tornillo de velocidad minima en sentido antihorario de a 1/8 devuelta por vez (segOn sea necesario) para reducir la velocidad minima.

La inspecci6n del combustible, la limpieza del filtro de aire y el ajuste deltornillo de velocidad minima debe resolver la mayoria de los problemas delmotor. En caso contrario, y si ninguna de las condiciones siguientes secumplen, pida que la unidad sea inspeccionada por un t6cnico calificado deSears o de otro distribuidor de servicio calificado:• El motor no funciona en minima

HUELGO DEL BRAZO OSCILANTE

_ DVERTENCIA: AI apagar la unidad, asegQrese de que elaccesorio de corte se haya detenido antes de apoyar la unidadpara prevenir graves lesiones personales.

Ambos balancines de vAIvulas se mueven libremente, y ambas vAIvulasestan cerradas

7. Deslice la galga entre el brazo oscilante y el resorte de retorno de lavAIvula. Mida el huelgo entre el vastago de la valvula y el brazooscilante (Fig. 33). Realice esto en las vAIvulas de entrada y de escape.

El huelgo recomendado para las v&lvulas de entrada y de escape es 0,076 -0,152 mm (0,003 - 0,006 pulgadas}. Use un calibrador regular de autom6vilde 0,127 mm (0,005 pulgadas}. El calibrador debe deslizarse entre el balanciny el v&stago de la vAIvula con una ligera cantidad de resistencia, sin doblarse(Fig. 32 y 33).

8. Si el huelgo no se encuentra dentro de las especificaciones:

a. Gire la tuerca de ajuste con una Ilave de 8 mm (5/16 pulgadas) o unaguia de tuercas (Fig. 33).

Para incrementar el huelgo, gire la tuerca de ajuste en sentidoantihorario.

Para reducir el huelgo, gire la tuerca de ajuste en sentido horario.

b. Vuelva a inspeccionar ambos huelgos, y ajuste si es necesario.9. Vuelva a instalar la cubierta del brazo oscilante utilizando una nueva

junta. Ajuste el tornillo a 2,2-3,4 N.m (20-30 pulgadas_libra).10. Inspeccione la bujia de encendido y vuelva a instalar. Lea Cambio de la

Bujia de encendido.

11. Vuelva a colocar el cable de la bujia de encendido.12. Vuelva a instalar la cubierta del motor. Verifique la alineaci6n de la

cubierta antes de ajustar los tornillos. Ajuste los tornillos.

CAMBIODELA BUJIA DE ENCENDIDO

Use una bujia de encendido Champion _ #RDZ4H. La separaci6n correctaes de 0.635 mm (0.025 pulgadas). Retire la bujia luego de cada 25 horas deoperaci6n e inspeccione su estado.

1. Apague el motor y espere que se enfrie. Retire los seis (6) tornillos de laparte posterior de la tapa del motor con destornillador de cabeza planao Torx No. T-25 (Fig. 30).

2. Tome el alambre de la bujia con firmeza y s&quelo de la bujia de encendido.

I _L I PREOAUOION: No limpie con chorro de arena, ni raspe ni 1limpie los electrodos. El motor podria daSarse si penetranpequeSas particulas en el cilindro.

3. Limpie alrededor de la bujia I Ide encendido. Saque la bujiade encendido de la cabezadel cilindro girando una Ilavede casquillo de 16 mm (5/8de pulgada) en sentidoantihorario.

4. Cambie las bujias que esten /

rajadas, sucias o deterioradas. 0.635 turn J,

Fije la separaci6n de aire a (0.025 pulg.) t0.635 mm (0.025 pumg.)utilizando un calibrador (Fig. 34). Fig. 34

5. Instale una bujia de encendido con la separaci6n correcta en la cabeza delcilindro. Ajuste girando la Ilave de casquillo 16 mm (5/8 de pulg.) en sentidohorario hasta que este ajustada sin huelgo.

ALMACENAMIENTO POR LARGOS PERIODOS DE TIEMPO

Si debe guardar la unidad durante un largo periodo de tiempo:

1. Drene toda la gasolina del tanque en un recipiente. No use gasolina que hayaestado guardada durante mas de 30 dias. Elimine la gasolina vieja de acuerdocon las normas federales, estatales y locales.

2. Arranque el motor y d6jelo funcionar hasta que se ahogue. Esto aseguraque toda la gasolina se haya drenado del carburador.

3. Deje enfriar el motor. Saque la bujia de encendido y coloque 5 gotas deaceite de motor de buena calidad en el cilindro. Tire de la cuerda dearranque lentamente para distribuir el aceite. Vuelva a instalar la bujiade encendido.

NOTA: Saque la bujia de encendido y drene todo el aceite del cilindroantes de intentar usar el recortador luego de haber estadoguardado.

4. Cambie el aceite. Lea Cambio del Aceite. Elimine el aceite viejo deacuerdo con las normas federales, estatales y locales.

5. Limpie bien la unidad y verifique que no existan partes flojas nidaSadas. Repare o cambie las partes daSadas y ajuste los tornillos, lastuercas o los pernos que est6n flojos. La unidad est& lista para serguardada.
