For two (2) years from date of purchase, when this Craftsman Tiller is maintained, lubri-cated, and tuned up according to the operating and maintenance instructions in theowner's manual, Sears will repair free of charge any defect in material or workmanship.This Warranty does not cover:.• Expendable items which become worn during normal use, such as tines, spark plugs,

air cleaners and belts.

• Repairs necessary because of operator abuse or ne_Jigence, including bent crank-shafts and the failure to maintain the equipment acccding to the instructions con-tained in the owner's manual.

• If this Craftsman Tiller is used for commemial or rental purposes, this Warrantyapplies for only thirty (30) days from the date of purchase.

Warranty service is available by returning the craftsman power mower to the nearestsears service center/departmant in the united states. TRAINING• Read the Owner's Manual carefully. Be

thoroughly familiar with the controls andthe proper use of the equipment. Knowhow t6 stop the unit and disengage thecontrols quickly.

• Never allow children to operate theequipment. Never allow adults to oper-ate the equipment without properinstruction,

• Keep the area of operation clear of allpersons, particularly small children, andpets.

PREPARATION• Thoroughly inspect the area where the

equipment is to be used and remove all

foreign objeJ:.-ts.• Disengage all clutches and shift into

neutral before staiting the engine (mo-tor).

• Do not operate the equipment withoutwearing adequate outer garments. Wearfootwear that will improve footing onslippery surfaces.

• Handle fuel with care; it is highly flam-mable.

• Use an approved fuel container.• Never addfuel to a running engine or

hot engine.• Fill fuel tank outdoors with extreme

care. Never fill fuel tank indoors.• Replace gasoline cap securely and

clean up spilled fuel before restarting.• Use extension cords and receptacles as

specified by the manufacturer for allunits with electric drive motors or elec-

tric starting motors.• Never attempt to make any adjustments

while the engine (motor) is running(excep_ where specifically recommend-ed by manufacturer).

OPERATION• Do not put hands or feet near or under

rotating parts.• Exercise extreme caution when operat-

ing on or crossing gravel ddves, walks,or roads. Stay alert for hidden hazardsor traffic. Do not carry passengers.

• After striking a foreign object, stop theengine (motor), remove the wire fromthe spark plug, thoroughly inspect thetiller for any damage, and repair thedamage before restarting and operatingthe tiller.

• Exemlse caution to avoid slipping orfalling.

• If the unit should start to vibrate abnor-mally, stop the engine (motor) and checkimmediately for the cause. Vibration isgenerally a waming of trouble.

• Stop the engine (motor) when leavingthe operating position.

• Take all possible precautions when leav-ing the machine unattended. Disengagethe tines, shift into neutral, and stop theengine.

• Before cleaning, repairing, or inspecting,shut off the engine and make certain allmoving parts have stopped. Disconnectthe spark plug wire, and keep the wireaway from the plug to prevent accidentalstarting. Disconnect the cord on electricmotors.

• Do not run the engine indoors; exhaustfumes are dangerous.

• Never operate the tiller without properguards, plates, or other safety protectivedevices in place.

• Keep children and pets away.• Do not overload the machine capacity

by attempting to till too deep at too fast arate.

• Never operate the machine at highspeeds on slippery surfaces. Lookbehind _nd use care when backing.

• Never allow bystanders near the unit.• Use only attachments and accessories

approved by the manufacturer of thetiller.

• Never operate the tiller without good vis-ibility or light.

• Be careful when tilling in hard ground.The tines may catch in the ground andpropel the tiller forward. If this occurs,let <3oof the handlebars and do notrestrain the machine.

MAINTENANCE Al_lb STORAGE

• Keep machine, attachments, andaccessories in safe working condition.

• Check shear pins, engine mountingbolts, and other bolts at frequent inter-vals for proper tightness to be sure theequipment is in safe working condition.

• Never store the machine with fuel in the

fuel tank inside a building where ignitionsources are present, such as hot waterand space heaters, clothes dryers, andthe like. Allow the engine to cool beforestoring in any enclosure.

• Always refer to the operator's guideinstructions for important details if thetiller is to be stored for an extended peri-od°

•,CAUTION: Always disconnect sparkplug wire and place wire where if cannotcontact spark plug in order to prevent acci-dental starting when setting up, transport-_g, adjusting or making repairs.

These accessories were available when the tiller was purchased. They are also avail-able at most Sears Retail outlets and Service Centers. Most Sears Stores can order

repair Parts for you when you provide the model number of your tiller.

Your new tiller has been assembled at thefactory with exception of those parts leftunassembled for shippingpurposes. Toensure safe and proper operation of yourtiller all pads and hardware you assemblemust be tightened securely. Use the correcttools as necessary to insure proper tight-ness.

UNPACK CARTON_CAUTION: Be careful of exposed sta-ples when handling or dispoSing of carton-ing material.IMPORTANT When unpacking and as-sembling tiller, be careful not to stretch orkink cable(s).• Cut cable ties secudng handle column

and reverse rod.• Slide handle column onto handle mount.

• Remove all packing from carton.

ASSEMBLE HANDLE• Slide reverse rod through hole in

reverse rod bracket as shown.• Slide bushing over lower reverse rod

and snap into bracket hole.NOTE: Make sure tine control cable isrouted in front of reverse rod bracket.• Attach reverse rod bracket to handle

column using two (2) cardage bolts andtwo (2) flange Iocknuts and tightensecurely.

• Cut away carton.• Insert plastic cable clip into hole in han-

dle column.• Route tine control cable through plastic

cable clip on handle column.• Cut cable ties securing tiller to skid.

Remove tiller from skid by pulling back-wards.

ASSEMBLE REVERSE ROD

• Secure upper reverse rod to J6werreverse rod using clevis pin, washer andcotter pin.

INSTALL DEPTH STAKE ASSEMBLY

• Loosen Nut "A".

• Insert stake support between enginebracket halves with stake spring down.

• Bolt_take support to engine bracketswith bolts, lock washers and nuts.Tighten securely. Tighten nut "A".

• Depth stake must move freely. If it doesnot, loosen support bolt.

HANDLE HEIGHT

• Handle height may be adjusted to bettersuit operator. (See "HANDLE HEIGHT"in the Service and Adjustments sectionof this manual).

TILLING WIDTH• Tilling width may be adjusted to better

handle your tilling' conditions (See "TINEARRANGEMENT" in the Service andAdjustments section of this manual).

The depth stake should always be belowthe wheels for digging. It serves as abrake to slow the tillers forward motion toenable the tines to penetrate the ground.Also, the more the depth stake is loweredinto the ground the deeper the tines willdig.

Adjust depth stake by removing the hair-pin clip and clevis pin. Change depthstake to desired position. Replace the cle-vis pin and hairpin clip.• For normal tilling, set depth stake at the

second or third hole from the top.

BEFORE STARTING ENGINEIMPORTANT:Beverycarefulnotto allowdirtto enterthe enginewhencheckingoraddingoil or fuel. Use clean oil and fueland store in approved, clean, covered con-tainers, use clean fill funnels.

FILL ENGINE WITH OIL• Remove hang tag from engine_

• With engine level, remove engine oilfiller plug.

• Fill engine with oil to point of overflow-ing. For approximate capacity see"PRODUCT SPECIFICATIONS" on page4 of this manual.

• Tilt tiller back on its wheels and then re-level.

• With engine level, refill to point of over-flowing if necessary. Replace oil fillerplug.

• For cold weather operation you shouldchange oil for easier starting (See "OILVISCOSITY CHART" in theMaintenance section of this manual).

• To change engine oil, see theMaintenance section of this manual.

ADD GASOLINE

• Fill fuel tank. Use fresh, clean, regularunleaded gasoline. (Use of leadedgasoline will increase carbon and leadoxide deposits and reduce valve life.)

IMPORTANT: When operating inTemperatures below 32°F (0°C), use fresh,clean, winter grade gasoline to help insuregood cold weather starting.WARNING: Experience indicates thatalcohol blended fuels (called gasohol orusing ethanol or methancT) can attractmoisture which leads to separation andformation of acids during storage. Acidicgas can damage the fuel system of anengine while in storage. To avoid engineproblems, the fuel system should be emp-tied before storage of 30 days or longer.Drain the gas tank, start the engine and letit run until the fuel lines and carburetor areempty. Us9 fresh fuel next season.

See Storage section of this manual foradditional information.. Never use engineor carburetor cleaner products in the fueltank or permanent damage may occur.

,_CAUTION: Fill to within 1/2 inch of topof fuel tank to prevent spills and to allowfor fuel expansion. If gasoline is acciden-tally spilled, move machine away fromarea of spill. Avoid creating any source ofignition until gasoline vapors have disap-peared. Do not overfill. Wipe off anyspilled oil or fuel. Do not store, spill or usegasoline near an open flame.TO START ENGINE

,_CAUTION: Keep tine control in "OFF"

position when starting engine.When starting engine for the first time or ifengine has run out of fuel, it will take extrapulls of the recoil starter to move fuel fromthe tank to the engine.

• Make sure spark plug wire is properlyconnected.

• Place throttle control in =FAST" position.• Move choke control to full "CHOKE"

position. Grasp recoil starter handle withone hand and grasp tiller handle withother hand. Pull rope out slowly untilengine reaches start of compressioncycle (rope will pull slightly harder at thispoint).

• Pull recoil starter handle quickly. Do notlet starter handle snap back againststarter. Repeat if necassary.

• If engine tires but does not start, movechoke control to half choke position. Pullrecoil starter handle until engine starts.

• When engine starts, slowly move chokecontrol to "RUN" pos'dion as enginewarms up.

NOTE: A warm engine requires less chok-ing to start.• Move throttle control_to desired running

position.• Allow engine to warm up for a few min-

utes before engaging tines.NOTE: If at a high altitude (3000 feet) orin cold temperatures (below 32°F), the car-buretor fuel mixture may need to beadjusted for best engine performance.See "TO ADJUST CARBURETOR" in the

Service and Adjustments section of thismanual.

NOTE: If engine does not start, see trou-bleshooting points.

BREAKING IN YOUR TILLER

Braak-in your belt(s), pulleys and tine con-trol before you actually begin filling.

• Start engine, tip tines off ground bypreying handles down and engage linecontrol to start tine rotation. Allow tinesto rotate for five minutes.

• Check line operation and adjust if nec-essary. See triNE OPERATIONCHECK" in the Service and Adjustmentssection of this manual.

TILLING HINTS '

_,CAUTION: Until you are accustomed tohandling your tiller, start actual field usewith throttle in slow position (mid-way be-tween "FAST" and "IDLE").To help tiller move forward, lift up the han-dles slightly (thus lifting depth stake out of

ground). To slow do.,wnthe tiller, pressdown on handles.

If you are straining or tiller is shaking, thewheels and depth stake are not set prop-erly in the soil being tilled. The proper set-ting of the wheels and depth stake isthrough trial and error and depends uponthe soil condition. (The harder or wetterthe ground, the slower the engine and linespeed needed. Under these poor condi-tions, _t fast speed the filler will run andjump over the ground).

A propedy adjusted tiller Will dig with littleeffort from the operator.

• Tilling is digging into, tuming over, andbreaking up packed soil before planting.Loose, unpacked soil helps root growth.Best tilling depth is 4" to6". A tiller willalso clear the soil of unwanted vegeta-tion. The decomposition of this veg-etable matter enriches the soil.Depending on the climate (rainfall andwind), it may be advisable to till the soil8t the end of the growing season to fur-ther condition the soil.

• Soil conditions are important for propertilling. Tines will not readily penetrate

. dry, hard soil which may contribute toexcessive bounce and difficult handlingof your tiller. Hard soil should be mois-tened before tilling; however, extremelywet soil will =ball-up" or clump during till-ing. Wait until the soil is less wet in orderto achieve the best results. When tillingin the fall, remove vines and long grassto prevent them from wrapping aroundthe line shaft and slowing your tillingoperation.

• You will find tilling much easier if youleave a row untilled between passes.Then go back between tilled rows. Thereare two reasons for doing this. F,rst,wide turns are much easier to negotiatethan about-faces. Second, the tillerwon't be pulling itself, and you, towardthe row next to it.

• Set depth stake and wheel height for

shallow !illing when working extremelyhard so ,.or sod. Then work across thefirst cuts at normal depth.

JCULTIVATINGCultivating is destroying the weedsbetween rows to prevent them from rob-bing nourishment and moisture from theplants. At the same time, breaking up theupper layer of soil crust will help retainmoisture in the soil. Best digging depth is1" to 3".• You will probably not need to use the

depth stake. Begin by tipping the depthstake forward until if is held by the stakespring.

• Cultivate up ano down the rows at aspeed which will allow tines to uprootweeds and leave the ground in roughcondition, promoting no further growth ofweeds and grass.

GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS

The warranty on this tiller does not coveritems that have been subjected to opera-tor abuse or negligence. To receive fullvalue from the warranty, operator mustmaintain tiller as instructed in this manual.

Some adjustments will need to be madeperiodically to propedy maintain your tiller.

All adjustments in the Service andAdjustments section of this manual shouldbe checked at least once each season.

• Once a year you should replace thespark plug, clean or replace air filter,and check tines and belt for wear. A

new spark plug and clean air filterassure proper air-fuel mixture and helpyour erlgine run better and last longer.

Disconnect spark plug wire before per-forming any maintenance (except carbure-tor adjustment) to prevent accidental start-ing of engine.Prevent fire!! Keep the engine free ofgrass, leaves, spilled oil, or fuel. Removefuel from tank before tipping unit for main-tenance. Clean mufflerarea of all grass,dirt,and debds.

Do not touch hot muffleror cylinderfins ascontact may cause bums.

ENGINELUBRICATION

Use only high quality detergent oil ratedwith API service classificationSF, SG orSH. Select the oil's SAE viscositygradeaccording to your expected temperature.

NOTE: Although multi-viscosity oils (5W-30, 10W-30, etc.) improve starting in coldweather, these multi-viscosity oils willresult in increased oil consumption whenused above 32°F (0°C). Check yourengine oil level more frequently to avoidpossible engine damage from running lowon oil.

Change the oil afte_ every 50 hours ofoperation or at least once a year if the tilleris not used for 50 hours in one year.Check the crankcase oil level before start-

ing the engine and after each five (5)hours of continuous use. Add SAE 30motor oil or equivalent. _ghten oil fillerplug securely each time you check the oillevel.

• Refill engine with oil. See "FILLENGINE WITH OIL" in the Operationsection of this manual.

AIR CLEANER

Service air cleaner cartddge every50hours, more often if engine is used in verydusty conditions.• Loosen air cleaner screws, one on each

side of cover.• Remove air cleaner cover.

• Carefully remove air cleaner cartridge.Be careful. Do not allow dirt or debris tofall into carburetor.

• Clean by tapping gently on a flat sur-face.

• If very dirty or damaged, replace car-tddge.

• Clean and replace cover. Tighten screwssecurely.

_CAUTION: Petroleum solvents, suchas kerosene, are not to be used to clean :cartridge. They may cause deterioration ofthe cartridge. Do not oil cartridge. Do notuse pressurized air to clean or dry car-tddge.

TO CHANGE ENGINE OIL

Determine temperature range expectedbefore oil change. All oil must meet APIservice classification SF, SG or SH.

• Be sure tiller is on level surface.

• Oil will drain more freely when warm.• Catch oil in a suitable container.

• Remove drain plug.• Tip tiller foPNard to drain oil.• After oil has drained completely, replace

oil drain plug and tighten securely.• Remove oil filler plug. Be careful not to

allow dirt to enter the engine.

COOLING SYSTEM

Your engine is air cooled. For properengine performance and long life keepyour engine clean.• Clean air screen frequently using a stiff-

bdstled brush.• Remove blower housing and clean as

necessary,• Keep cylinder fins free of dirt and chaff.

Do not operate tiller without muffler. Do nottamper with exhaust system. Damagedmufflem or spark arrestem could create afire hazard. Inspect periodically and re-place if necessary. If your engine isequipped with a spark an'ester screenassembly, remove every 50 hours forcleaning and inspection. Replace if dam-aged.

SPARK PLUGReplace spark plugs at the beginning ofeach tilling season or after every 50 hoursof use, whichever comes first. Spark plugtype and gap setting is shown in "PROD-UCT SPECIFICATIONS" on page 4 of thismanual.

TRANSMISSION

Your transmission is sealed and will onlyrequire lubrication if it is serviced.

CLEANING• Clean engine, wheels, finish, etc. of all

foreign matter.• Keep finished surfaces and wheeLs free

of all gasoline, oil, etc.• Protect painted surfaces with automotive

typewax.We do not recommend using a gardenhose to clean your unit unless the muffler,air filter and carburetor are covered tokeep water out. Water in engine can resultin a shortened engine life.

_CAUTION: Disconnect spark plug wirefrom spark plug and place wire where itcannot come into contact with plug.TILLERTO ADJUST HANDLE HEIGHT

Factory assembly has provided lowesthandle height. Select handle height bestsuited for your tilling conditions. Handleheight will be different when tiller digs intosoil.

• If a higher handle height is desired,loosen the four nuts securing handlepanel to engine brackets.

FINAL CHECK "OFF" POSITION• With tine control =OFP (up), push down

on handle to raise tines off the ground.• Slowly pull recoil starter handle while

observing tines. Tines should notrotate.

• If tines rotate, inner wire of control cableis too tight which is extending lowerspring and engaging tines. Loosencable clip and push down on cable onlyenough to relieve spring tension.Tighten cable clip.

• Recheck in =OFP position and adjust ifnecessary.

FINAL CHECK "ON" POSITION

• With tine control =ON" (held down tohandle) push down on handle to raisetines off the ground.

• Slowly pull recoil Starter handle whileobserving tines. Tines should rotate for-ward.

• If tines do not rotate), inner wire of con-trol cable is too loose. Loosen cable clip

and pull cable up to remove slack andretighten clip.

• Recheck in "ON" position and adjust ifnecessary.

NOTE: If =ON" position check requiredadjustment, recheck =OFP position adjust-ment to insure tines do not rotate when

control is "OFP (up).

TO REMOVE BELT GUARD

• Remove two (2) cap nuts and washersfrom side of belt guard.

• Loosen (do not remove) tine shield nuton underside of tine shield.Pull belt guard out and away from unit.

•" Replace belt guard by reversing aboveprocedure. Be sure slot in bottom of beltguard is under head of tine shield boltand all nuts are tightened securely.

TO REPLACE V-BELTSReplace V-belts if they have stretched con-siderably or if they show cracks or frayededges. There are two (2) V-belts - forward(inside) and reverse (outside).

Belt guard must be removed to servicebelts. See "TO REMOVE BELT GUARD"in this section of manual.

NOTE: Observe carefully routing of bothbelts and location of all belt guides beforeremoving belts.BELT REMOVAL• Remove reverse idler pulley from idler

• Remove reverse (outside) V-belt.Remove forward (inside) V-belt fromtransmission pulley first and then fromengine pulley.

BELT REPLACEMENT• Install new forward (inside) V-belt to

engine pulley first then to transmissionpulley. Be sure belt is positioned oninside 9roove of both pulleys, inside allbelt guides and rests on idler pulley.

• Before installing reverse (outside) V-belt,turn belt =inside out". Twist so wide, flatsurface of belt is to inside.

• Wrap V-belt around reverse idler pulleyand reassemble idler to idler arm.Tighten securely. Be sure belt isbetw .een reverse idler pulley apd idlerarm pin.

° Install belt to outside groove of transmis-sion pulley. Be sure belt is inside all beltguides and rests on outside groove ofengine pulley.

ENGINE

Maintenance, repair, (_r replacement of theemission control devices and systems,which are being done at the customersexpense, may be performed by any non-road engine repairestablishment or individ-ual. Warranty repairs must be performedby an authorized engine manufacturer'sservice outlet.

TO ADJUST CARBURETOR

The carburetor has a high speed fixed jetand has been preset at the factory and ad-justment should not be necessary. Howev-er, minor adjustments may be required tocompensate for differences in fuel, temper-ature, altitude or load. If the carburetordoes need adjustment, proceed as follows.FINAL SETFING

• Start engine and allow to warm for fiveminutes.

• With throttle control in "SLOW" position.IDLE RPM ADJUSTMENT

• Rotate throttle linkage counterclockwiseand hold against stop while adjustingidle speed adjusting screw to obtain1750 RPM. Release, throttle linkage.

High speed stop is factory adjusted. Donot adjust or damage may result.IMPORTANT: Never tamper with the en-gine govemor, which is factory set forproper engine speed, overspeeding theengine above the factory high speed set-ting can be dangerous: If you think theengine-govemed high speed needs adjust-Jng, contact your nearest authorized ser-vice center/department, which has thepropar equipment and experience to makeany necessary adjustments.

Immediatelyprepare your tiller for storageat the end of the season or if the unit willnot be used for 30 days or more.

,_CAUTION: Never store the tiller with

gasoline in the tank inside a buildingwhere fumes may reach an open flame orspark. Allow the engine to cool beforestodng in any enclosure.

TILLER• Clean entire tiller (See "CLEANING" in

the Maintenance section of this manual).• Inspect and replace belts, if necessary

(See belt replacement instructions in theService and Adjustments section of thismanual).

• Lubricate as shown in the Maintenancesection of this manual.

• Be sure that all nuts, bolts and screwsare securely fastened. Inspect movingpads for damage, breakage and wear.Replace if necessary.

• Touch up all rusted or chipped paint sur-faces; sand lightly before painting.

ENGINE

FUEL SYSTEM

IMPORTANT: It is important to preventgum deposits from forming in essential fuelsystem pads such as the carburetor, fueltilter, fuel hose, or tank dudng storage.also, expedence indicates that alcoholblended fuels (called gasohol or usingethanol or methanol) can attract moisturewhich leads to separation and formation ofacids dudng storage. Acidic gas can dam-age the fuel syste m of an engine while instorage.• Drain the fuel tank.

• Start the engine and let it run until thefuel lines and carburetor are empty.

• Never use engine or carburetor cleanerproducts in the fuel tank or permanentdamage may occur.

• Use fresh fuel next season.

NOTE: Fuel stabilizer is an acceptablealternative in minimizingthe formation offuel gum deposits duringstorage. Add sta-bilizer to gasoline in fuel tank or storagecontainer. Always follow the mix ratiofound on stabilizer container. Run engineat least 10 minutes after adding stabilizerto allow the stabilizer to reachthe carbure-tor. Do not drain the gas tank and carbu-retor if usingfuel stabilizer.

ENGINE OIL

Drain oil (with engine warm) and replacewith clean oil. (See =ENGINE" in theMaintenance section of this manual).

CYLINDER(S)

• Remove spark plug.• Pour I ounce (29 ml) of oil through

spark plug hole into cylinder.• Pull starter handle slowly several times

to distribute oil.

• Replace with new spark plug.

OTHER

• Do not store gasoline from one seasonto another.

• Replace your gasoline can if your canstarts to rust. Rust and/or dirt in yourgasoline will cause problems.

• If possible, store your unit indoors andcover it to give protection from dust anddirt.

• Cover your unit with a suitable protectivecover that does not retain moisture. Donot use plastic. Plastic cannot breathewhich allows condensation to form and

will cause your unit to rust.IMPORTANT: Never cover tiller while

engine and exhaust areas are still warm.
