Standard is Based on C2C Principles
Eliminate the concept of waste Design materials that are safe and that can be used as nutrients in continuous biological or technical cycles.
Use renewable energy The quality of energy matters. Celebrate diversity Use social fairness in company operations, support biodiversity, and strive for a beneficial social, cultural, and ecological footprint.
14
Version 3.0 Transition Policy
• Certification of new products under Version 3.0 began January 1, 2013
• Products certified under Version 2.1.1 prior to January 1, 2013 will be given two years to comply with V3.0 (‘grandfathering period’)
• Can re-certify under V2.1.1 until Jan 1, 2015 • If maintaining current level under V2.1.1 is not achievable under V3.0 by January 1, 2015, may submit appeal to Institute to request extension, which must state specific reasons why not achievable.
• Can re-certify under V3.0 at any time
15
Certification Cycle Extended By 1 Year
• Under Version 2.1.1, recertification every year
• Under Version 3.0, recertification every 2 years

18
V3.0 Basic Level Requirements
19
Basic
• No significant discharge permit violations (V2 Gold) • Local, business-specific water issues characterized and mitigation action plan developed (V2 Gold)

In V3 Basic is a Provisional Level
• Establish baseline/inventory for each category • Intended to facilitate getting ‘on the path to
continuous improvement’ • Commitment to optimize over time • Limited to one certification cycle (2 years) • Cannot use Certification Mark on products (but
allowed in print and web materials)

A/B
Recycled content (postconsumer recycled (PCR) or post-industrial (PI)) is highly defined to exact chemical composition and meets requirements of the A or B assessment rating
C Recycled content (PCR or PI) is highly defined to exact chemical composition and meets requirements of the C assessment rating OR recycled content meets the testing requirements as listed in section 3.4.2
Grey Cannot determine composition enough to generate an assessment rating √ Mixed and varied PCR Content √ Untreated PCR paper
X

Banned PCR containing Banned List chemicals cannot be included in certified products
New to V3 Material Ratings for Recycled Content
26
New to V3: Externally Managed Components (EMCs)
• Guarantee for take back and appropriate nutrient management • The supplier has signed a declaration that chemicals in the EMC
will not negatively impact humans or the natural environment during the intended and unintended but highly likely use of the product for which the EMC is a component.
• The EMC has undergone testing by an accredited analytical laboratory to ensure that harmful substances are not being emitted above the chemical’s analytical detection limits. Off-gas testing is required for all EMCs.
• EMCs are subject to supplier banned list declarations.
27
A subassembly, component, or material within a product that is exempt from full characterization to the 100 ppm level because it is managed in a technical nutrient cycle as part of a supplier or manufacturer commercialized nutrient management program.
*The Institute will work with CSB to clarify EMC requirements
Change in % of Materials Assessed using ABC-X Ratings

29
• In addition to purchased electricity, sources of on-site emissions are addressed.
• Renewable energy claims must be valid, meaning that the energy used is counted only once, and that the applicant has the right to claim the use of that energy.
