Hello

This week we will be learning about explanations and conjunctions. Let’s start with explanations

Explanations

• Explanations tell us:

• What something is

• How something works

• Why things happen

We know that Wallace and Gromit love their cracking contraptions!

Now here’s a written explanation of how the Snoozatron works.

The Snoozatron that helps you sleep If you are struggling to sleep, activate the ‘Snoozatron’ device. This remarkable contraption will help any insomniac inventor return swiftly to back to sleep. If you are awake in the middle of the night, pull the big, red lever on the side of the tower. This activates the machine immediately. As a result, an alarm rings in your assistant’s bedroom. The assistant then puts on a sheep costume. Meanwhile, back in your room, several mechanisms spring into action. Giant mechanical hands – covered in soft fabric – bounce out from under the bed and re-tuck the bed covers. Two huge leather pads appear and begin to push and plump the pillows from both sides. Before both devices disappear again, a pair of pincers then swings down and deposits a cosy hot water bottle on your lap. This is accompanied by another arm, which passes you a teddy bear. As a consequence, you will start to feel warm and comfortable again. At the same time, the picture on the wall nearby folds down to reveal a record player, which begins to play soothing music. Additionally, the sound of lambs bleating can be heard.

At this point, a hatch drops open above the assistant who should now be downstairs. The assistant steps onto the circular platform mounted on a massive spring and is catapulted through the hatch up into your room. This final process is repeated over and over. Every time ‘the sheep’ appears you will need to count to 100 until you fall asleep again. The Snoozatron can reliably bounce ‘the sheep’ up to 9999 times!

Now have a look at this contraption

• Share this picture with someone in your house and explain how it works (say it, don’t write it, you’ll to this in another lesson. You can make some notes to help you remember key points).

Subordinating Conjunctions Subordinating conjunctions join independent, complete clauses to a dependent clause.

The clause that follows a subordinating conjunction is less important than the main

clause.

Bella repainted her bedroom because she didn’t like pink anymore.

although, as, before, once, though, until, whether,

since, because, even though, before, provided, after,

whenever, once, so that

Here are some subordinating conjunctions

So, how do we use subordinating conjunctions?

Subordinating conjunctions are the first words within a subordinate clause. Subordinate clauses do not make sense on

their own but, when they are used with a main clause, they create a complex (multi-clause) sentence.

Subordinate clauses will always have a subject and verb within them, e.g.

after she smiled after Christmas

is a subordinate clause is not a subordinate clause

verb subject subordinating conjunction

Here ‘after’ is being used as a preposition.

Subordinating conjunctions can also be used as the first word in a sentence. When the subordinate clause comes before the

main clause, make sure you remember to use a comma to mark where the subordinate clause ends.

I SAW A

WABUB!

When the bell rang, the eager pupils sped into school.

A Checklist for Good Explanations • A clear title to show what is being explained

• An opening paragraph • Clear steps to show how or why something occurs • The events in order • Conjunctions of time (e.g. before, after) • Causal conjunctions (e.g. because, so, this causes,

therefore, thus, consequently) • Illustrations/diagrams/flow charts to make

explanation clearer

WG7 7FU By Heck Year 5! We’ve had a major catastrophe down at the workshop! Let me tell you what’s happened…

I was in my living room a week ago, enjoying a nice cuppa tea and some cheese and crackers, when I heard a strange noise coming from downstairs in the basement. Now, usually it’s me that’s making strange noises in the basement as I bring my ideas to life and put my inventions together. I thought it might have been Gromit, you know, because sometimes he’s a bit clumsy. But wouldn’t you know it, the mutt walked in just as I was about to shout him! Then I realised someone was down there!

We rushed down there, but we were too late! Someone had stolen all of my ideas! All my blueprints, all my explanations of how my machines work, gone! This is why I’m writing to you, Year 5. I need some new inventions. I need some help getting going again! I want you to draw plans and write explanations of your best machines possible.

I’ve asked your teachers to help you out, because I need your drawings and writing to be as clear and understandable as possible, so that I can get building again! And don’t forget, I’m only going to make the interesting ones! My invention show is in a few weeks, and I need these explanations of how to build your machines! I hope you can help, Year 5? Wallace

PS, I’ve sent you a picture of the prime suspect. If you see him, make sure you tell the police!

Draw your own contraption that you

could send to Wallace and Gromit. Remember

to add labels

When you have drawn it, write an explanation to go with it.
