Artist Brief – Mural Artist Commission Crabtree Estates Underpass, Bulwell, Nottingham May 2017 The People’s Choice Tenants and Residents Association are seeking an experienced mural artist to work with pupils and staff at Crabtree Farm Primary School, to design and paint a new mural on a local underpass. Photographs of the area are included at the end of this document. A discreet area of the mural should reflect the various funding sources that are contributing to the project. The finished work must be finished to an agreed standard in terms of quality of work. The Artist We are looking for someone who has had experience in producing large scale murals in public places and is confident engaging with members of the public and leading creative community engagement, including activities with children. The artist must be able to demonstrate:
• Previous mural or equivalent artwork in public places • Strong design skills, with a commitment to community engagement in the design
process • Previous experience of engaging with schools and communities • A knowledge of suitable materials and where to source them • Coordination experience and knowledge of Health & Safety guidelines • Current DBS status and Public Liability Insurance
The Project The successful artist will be invited to meet local volunteers involved in managing Crabtree Community Centre and pupils and staff at Crabtree Farm Primary School. We would like the artist to engage with the local community to discuss potential design ideas for the mural and work closely with the school’s Arts Coordinator to inspire and encourage children attending the school to create some elements that can be included in the design. The artist will then draw up final designs in discussion with local residents, pupils and staff. We would like as many children at the school as possible to have the opportunity to directly work on the mural, under the artists’ supervision, during the school art week. The aim of the project is to celebrate the local area and generate pride and ownership of the space, drawing on local themes such as local heroes and heritage and global themes such as looking after the planet, nature and our environment. The successful artist will lead on community engagement, with the support of the Project team, and present a clear vision for the design and creation of the mural. The artist will be expected to manage the production phase, completing risk assessments and working within health and safety guidelines, to ensure the smooth running of the project.
