During basic research as a candidate standing in the forthcoming County Council elections on May the 2nd, I visited the NCC website and noticed a rotating commercial adverton their home page which included a loosely clad young lady promoting some product or other. Please correct me if I am wrong, but is this the way to promote Norfolk in any way shape or form?I hope not, as advertising in this sort of format should be left to late night TVnot one’s local authority.Thankfully, since seeing this, it has not appeared again over the last few days. I draw readers attention to the response we have had from candidates standing for the Norfolk County Council on Pages 6,7&8. Most of the TV and Radio stations have, over recent weeks, been focusing on the passing and funeral of the former Prime Minster of England, Margaret Thatcher.I have never been a fan of this particular lady from Grantham, particularly when she began to introduce the Poll Tax and closed so many coal mines, which basically produced a class war in this country at the time.Without going into reams of details, it was the selling of council houses, without reinvesting the revenue back into social housing that, in my mind, destroyed so very much in this fair land of ours.

Affordable decent housing remains one of the biggest problems this country continues to face, year in year out.Enough of our former Prime Minister. Will you be voting on May the 2nd? I do hope so.In response to David Watts from Trunch. I do agree with you, that the cost of licencing a dog at £100 a year is too much.Likewise I agree with your other comments in relation to keeping and controlling dogs You naturally have a great deal more experience and know-how on keeping dogs than I do.I would also like to thank Dorothy Millard for her very interesting letter regarding the Mundesley Guide Book, on Page 4

A Personal Service through to a Professional Finish

Dear Mr Keddell,As an aside in the latest Crab Tales I hope you are going to stand for election on 2nd May, otherwise you will be lonely on the 3rd!Regarding the reintroduction of dog licences I have competed and taught dog training in obedience & working trials from 1969 to 2002, and have the Championship wins to show for it. I still own and walk/work a Rottweiler X and I think that the residents of Trunch who know ‘Henry’ will tell you how vicious and dangerous he is, if they can stop laughing long enough!I also, in a previous existence ran a 3 station sub post office in the South West in the days of dog licensing at a cost of less than £2. As I walked my dogs each day I knew who did (about 60%) & who didn’t have a dog licence I knew whose dogs were left alone all day and the dogs left to fend & fight for themselves. I also ran a dog club where the hall was next to a large council estate and we occasionally included ‘freebie’ youngsters in our courses because we sometimes discovered that their dog was their only friend in an unhappy home environment & the youngster did a paper round to pay for the dog’s food. (Where are they likely to find £100 for your licence?) It was always a joy to see their faces when they qualified for their next award.I suggest that you are approaching the problem from the wrong end. I have seen a person let 5 terriers run free on a park and they worked in unison to attack a Great Dane. The owner flapped her arms, calling ‘Come here’ and was totally ignored. Yes, we need dogs under control.Yes we need owners/handlers/walkers who know how to control their dogs.

SO, how do we achieve that? I suggest that we should approach the owner/handler through the Kennel Club Good Citizendog award scheme, which offers 4 levels of achievement: Puppy, Bronze, Silver & Gold. With 18 Kennel Club accredited training clubs in Norfolk, they are not too difficult to find!If ownership of a dog gave you 6 months (or whatever may be stipulated) to qualify then responsible breeders & organisations which rehome dogs could stipulate that those having one of their dogs is required to qualify and this could be made obvious to Police/PCSO’s by a coloured disc on the dog’s collar. It would be easy to police but you will still not catch the uncaring breeder or the irresponsible owner. You will still not stop a stupid person leaving a 14 year old youngster with a ‘pack’ of 5 dogs that do not ‘know’ her. But I suspect that the authorities will never charge anyone with that young girl’s death. What you would achieve is to give the responsible owner a target to which to aspire (and to see the higher grades that they could work for, and thus have a better trained companion). A raising of training standards among many owners who currently do not consider the real responsibilities involved in owning one or more dogs, and finally a disc on the dogs collar that would enable/empower the police to instantly remove those dogs who tend to be the larger part of the problem on our streets.Yours sincerely,David Watts,Trunch.

Dear Philip,As you are aware, Mundesley now has a new defibrillator on the wall of Coronation Hall, which has been jointly purchased by the Coronation Hall Committee & Mundesley Ambulance First Responders. As Secretary/Treasurer of the local ambulance first responders, I wish to express our gratitude for the donations from our friends in the village and surrounding villages and our generous Beach Cafe owners Toni and Martin.

We recently held a familiarisation session in the Corner House Cafe, where Janice Bishop, the owner, was pictured (onLeft) practising her Defibrillator techniques. Thanks to Steve & Janice for allowing us to use their lovely cafe.

More sessions are planned to enable villagers to familiarise themselves with the defibrillator along with CPR techniques. If anyone is interested please contact me on 01263 722 523. YOU can save a life!Regards,Laura Stango

Dear Philip,For about 3 years a faithful, generous group of women have been knitting scarves, hats, balaklavas and gloves for our troops in Afghanistan but we have recently been informed by another group of knitters from Norfolk, that we are only allowed to use pure wool for our garments.I have no idea how this rumour began, but it is an absolute nuisance and I don’t think the troops would have the time or inclination to wash all their woollen items by hand and more importantly the object of the lesson is, no matter what yarn we use to knit with, when our parcels are delivered the troops realise they are remembered and valued until they return home to their families & friends. So to all our brilliant knitters go on as you are, take no heed of those who criticise, just “Carry On Knitting”Yours Sincerely,Maureen LeggettTrimingham

Dear Mr Keddell,I am a Mundesley resident, and voter.I do not know if you are aware that Norfolk District Council is about to spend somewhere in the region of a quarter million pounds on the refurbishment of its reception area and adjoining space. (I don’t know if this sum is correct, but it was the amount I was told). This has to be a gross missuse of council tax,it is also morally wrong considering the number of people this council has made redundant over the past four years. The refurbishment is being paid for by the misery of others. If the sum is correct then eight or ten jobs could have been saved. It is also flying in the face of the conservative claims that Wyndham Northam has a long history of ensuring that the council runs itself efficiently, and that our money is spent wisely. (See his election manifesto). In who’s opinion is spending this money however much it is on this project,

Dear Philip,I was very interested to see the letter from Bob Carless in Issue 09 of the Crab Tales, showing a section from Mundesley on Sea’s Official Guide from, probably by my reckoning, the early 60’s. Derek Rush did not actually sell flowers and sweets in his Fish & Chip shop, but a shop next door. I remember all the places shown perfectly, as I was a teenager here at the time and I lived in Meadow House, which my mother ran as a guest house, where you could stay full board for the princely sum of 8 guineas a week. Those days in the 40’s, 50’s & 60’s, were when Mundesley was in its hay day, and a prettier, more family friendly, gentle sea-side village you could not find anywhere. Even the beach seemed much sandier and less stony than today. The population was less than half of what it is now and large housing estates did not exist. The centre of the village where “All Saints Way” is now, was a market garden, where flowers, fruit & vegetables were grown by the Gotts family, to sell in their green-grocers shop, which is now the new hairdressers, next to Jupe. The large sprawling estate that is now Norfolk Homes, were green fields, leading to an RAF camp, which was a vital radar station during the war & afterwards into the late 50’s, and every summer day seemed to be hot and sunny, with the beach so full of people in deck chairs, that barely a pin could be put between them, while, all around, Charlie Payne’s orange boxes containing pots of tea & sandy sandwiches, dotted the beach, as families enjoyed their holidays. Chalets & self-catering holidays were in their infancy then, and Mundesley welcomed its visitors in Guest Houses and B & B’s, with several hotels: The Grand Hotel, The Manor,The Royal, The Ship and The Lifeboat Inn. Even people with a spare room in their cottage may well have seen the potential of a double room to let.

is in fact how the residents of North Norfolk want their council tax to be spent. Are there not better and more worthy uses for it.The Reception area is hardly used, and as most business is now done on line or by telephone so people rarely, if ever, have the need to visit.Best of luck with the elections.Anthony S GentMundesley

On the front of the Brochure is a drawing of Fishermans Gangway, which since time immemorial, has always been a public right of way, where holiday makers would make their way onto the sands after a snack and a pint at the Lifeboat. The Lifeboat car park has now been packed with houses, and the Fishermans Gangway, has mysteriously become private property, to be only used by these houses. How this became the case, who knows, perhaps we should delve into these anomalies and find out why our public rights of way are gradually being eroded, without being challenged. These bygone days, seemed to me as a child to be filled with sunshine & freedom, where doors needn’t be locked and everyone knew everybody else in the village and life moved at a slower pace. A lot of people will say that how Mundesley is now, is progress, and things and places must change with the times, but I know which Mundesley I would rather have.Yours sincerely Dorothy Millard.Note From EditorThank you Dorothy for this. As far as I am concerned here is a case of ‘ The Magic That Is Mundesley’ PK

CROUCH Peter Alan. Green PartyI have lived in North Norfolk all my life and have seen many changes; I believe in a progressive and inclusive future for our district. I am again standing in the Mundesley area as I stood

for the Gaunt ward at the last District elections. The Green Party vision is to provide prosperity for all within the limits of our planet. A caring, co-operative, inclusive society. The Green Party is not supported by big business or trade unions. Our policies are not influenced by vested interests. We rely on individuals for support. The Green Party has been the opposition to the coalition parties at County Hall for the last four years, with more seats than Labour. Details of our six county councillors achievements along with our manifesto can be found at www.norwichgreenparty.org I hope enough people agree that it would be good to have a local Green councillor with constructive sustainable policies.

JONES Graham Robert IndependentGraham has represented Mundesley Division at County Hall for the past four years. He lives in Antingham with his partner Madeline. He has four grown-up children & seven grand-children. He is a member of Antingham Village Hall Committee, a Director of

the Griffon Area Partnership, a Governor of Mundesley First School and is actively involved with community matters such as helping to fund raise for Mundesley Inshore Lifeboat. He has also helped to raise over £5,400 for the Sheringham Little Theatre Stars appeal by organising three fundraising concerts. Graham is also a poet and enjoys singing at the various folk clubs in the area.Graham believes that the best thing for a politician is to tell the truth and hang the consequences and he feels that a politician’s main role is to be the voice for those who might not otherwise have a voice.

KEDDELL Philip IndependentMost of the Crab Tales readers are already aware that I have run this local publication for over ten years.Through spending a great deal of time covering the local events in the North Norfolk area I have met many of the

good folk who are living in this area.I know their needs and what they expect from their local authorities and from their Councillors.Having spent eight years as a County and District Councillor in Lincolnshire, before moving to this area, I am aware of the duties and importantly the responsibilities involved, in representing the people of the large ward of Mundesley. Now that I live in Mundesley and represent it as a Parish Councillor, I am aware of all the local issues. I am seeking your support in order to work hard for you and to ensure that your vote is not wasted.I am convinced that being a good Councillor is all about listening to you and finding ways of dealing with any problems you or your family may have. Please feel free to phone me on 01263 726 831

CromerCOX Hilary - ConservativeDuring the last 4 years on the County Council I have worked tirelessly to help keep Norfolk a safe, vibrant and cost-effective county. My loyalties lie with Cromer & the surrounding area and

I represent you on a number of committees which support important local services; the Fire Service, Museums, the Local Access Forum and the Bittern Line. I am also the vice-chairman of the Eastern Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority which is vitally important to Cromer. Additionally I was responsible for the County Council approving the land for the skate-park. As a Governor, I am pleased to be able to support our local schools and am delighted with the good Ofsted reports and general high standards. My consistent attendance at Town and Parish Council meetings has allowed me to become instrumental in helping to achieve solutions to local issues – road safety, public foot-path problems, school improvements and local flooding matters. I pledge to continue with this work. My surname may have changed, but my commitment and service to you has not!

EASTWOOD Scott James LabourScott works in outdoor education just outside Cromer and is a specialist in residential field work for schools. He was elected to Cromer Town Council in 2011 and has been fighting for the town ever since – campaigning to save local

jobs at the Cromer Crab factory & working to bring better facilities for young people in the town. He even ran the New Year’s Day fun run dressed as a penguin to raise money for the skatepark! He says: “Since elected to town council I’ve been out & about talking to people on the doorstep listening to your concerns to make Cromer a better place for all of us to live. I am standing for these elections because I believe in a fairer society where everyone is given a chance in life from an early age to their last day. A society where Sure Start centres are not closed, where people can afford to get to college to better themselves, where the elderly have the support they need, and where people can work to get our economy going again.”

ERIS Rupert Sandino - Green PartyNO PHOTO OR STATEMENT SUBMITTED

HARBORD Richard Payne - Lib Dem Richard has lived in the Cromer area for over 30 years. He is involved in the community through his local church, school & the amenity societies of Cromer. For most of his professional life he has been involved in housing development.

He is keen to reconcile the urgent need for new housing with a sustainable countryside and a prosperous economy so that North Norfolk communities can keep their distinctive character.Hard working Member of Parliament Norman Lamb is backing Richard Harbord in this election. They have campaigned together for many years on local issues. Richard is also supported by Andy Yiasimi who was elected as District Councillor for Cromer in February.

NCC Election Candidates In The Crab Tales AreaMORGAN John Gaston Independent I am standing as an Independent because I believe Cromer Division voters deserve a real choice, not just the ‘usual suspects’ of political party candidates. As an Independent County Councillor, party politics

would play no part in doing the right things for local residents. I would spend no time or energy on party issues and not be bound to vote according to a ‘party whip’.I believe party politics doesn’t matter at local levels – it’s about people, communities & resources. It is not a miniature version of national politics. Any county councillor would (you hope) fight your corner in discussions & debates. But when it comes down to making decisions, they vote their party line. So vote Lib Dem or Tory to add one more whipped vote to their block party votes at County Hall.Or vote for a real Independent candidate to represent residents rather than political party interests.

SCOTT-FAWCETT Stephen David - UKIPSupport for UKIP in Norfolk is very strong and is growing rapidly. I was born in Norwich and educated at Cambridge University. I am a consultant Chartered Surveyor, living and

working in Cromer. I have been in north Norfolk for 15 years and, as a member of various local, national and international organisations, I am actively involved in supporting the local community. I consider it a privilege to be nominated as UKIP’s Cromer Division candidate in the Norfolk County Council Elections on May 2nd. I care deeply about my home town. If elected, I would seek (among other things) to : (1) Abolish ALL car parking charges after 6pm; (2) Campaign for the SENSITIVE renovation of Nth Lodge Park; (3) Ensure our youngsters have a state of the art skate board facility; (4) Campaign for a roundabout at the dangerous Felbrigg Road/A148 junction and a footbridge over the railway bridge. I am acutely aware that Cromer has a problem with dogs fouling our pathways and roads. I would seek to work closely with all dog owners to find a solution that is effective and friendly to town, man and beast alike. Cromer is a wonderful place to live. I will do my utmost to keep it that way.

MundesleyCORNWALL Liz Labour Liz has lived in north Norfolk for the past 20 years with her husband Tom, & is no stranger to politics - having served eight years as a district and town councillor. She also served 2 years as Nth

Walsham’s town mayor – having given her 100% commitment to the job. Speaking in her election address, Liz said: “I believe in representing the electorate irrespective of political views. I believe I am the right candidate to offer the people of Mundesley a change from the past, should they wish to see that happen”.Recently Liz has been helping North Norfolk Labour Party campaigners fight for urgent action from Vodafone with regards to the mobile phone signal problems that have been affecting customers in this part of the district for a long time. Liz would be happy to answer any questions residents may have. She can be contacted by calling 01692 406 477 or by email at :[email protected].

and then to London. He has worked for the charity Leonard Cheshire Disability. He has experience as a civil servant and as an adviser to international businesses. Ed currently works for North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb, whose breakthrough election campaign he ran back in 2001.“Politics is a team game and I can get things done as part of the Liberal Democrat team at County Hall. I have worked closely with Norman Lamb over many years & I will speak up for you on issues that matter, whether it is the County Council that deals with it, whether it is NNDC or another body. The tourism industry should get the support it deserves. Our streets & beaches should be kept clean. The County Council needs to maintain local roads properly and invest properly in schools.”

successive occasions. I was also elected to Norfolk County Council twice in both 2001 and 2005. Throughout this time the support of the electors in Mundesley Division, except for one occasion, ensured I have always recorded the highest personal vote in North Norfolk. On this record alone I can justifiably accept that electors have been satisfied with the service I provide them. They trust me and my ability to represent them successfully, and have appreciated what I have achieved for Mundesley Division. I have held cabinet posts at Norfolk County Council and in 2008 had the honour of being elected chairman of the County Council. I also presently hold a cabinet post at North Norfolk District Council. The above and my wish to continue to serve the people of Mundesley Division are the reasons why someone should vote for me, Wyndham Northam.

be subject to a local binding referendum. We must end open door immigration from the EU, to help our housing, education, health & social services to cope: because they cannot now! He is an active member of the local community and helps to organise Worstead Festival. As a committed environmentalist he can often be seen walking or cycling to engagements across the division. Ed is campaigning to be County Councillor for North Walsham East & to build on the record of achievement of the outgoing Lib Dem Councillor Paul Morse. He is keen to ensure that the County Council works to maintain the quality of life in our communities. He will continue Paul Morse’s work to ensure local footpaths are properly maintained and also to get the County Council to tackle flooding issues.

OAKES Paul Malcolm Green PartyI live in North Walsham I am 57 years old, I am self employed. I believe in a progressive and inclusive future for our county. I am standing in the Nth Walsham East area because I believe

in a better and fairer society. The green Party vision is to provide prosperity for all within the limits of our planet. a caring, co-operative, inclusive society. The green Party is not supported by big business or trade unions. Our policies are not influenced by vested interests. We rely on individuals for support. The Green Party has been in opposition to the coalition parties at County Hall for the last four years, with more seats than Labour. Details of our six councillors achievements along with our manifesto can be found at : www.norwichgreenparty.orgI hope enough people agree that it would be good to have a local Green councillor with constructive sustainable policies.

SHEPHERD Richard.Conservative “North Walsham East” describes one of the most pretty and also striking areas of Norfolk. From the town across the river Ant & Dilham Canal, across rolling farmland to Happisburgh Lighthouse there is so much that needs protection.

Our tourism is dependent upon good transport service & decent roads. Footpaths need attention and our big skies need defending from the blight of giant wind turbines. Young families have a right to housing & companies need attracting to provide employment. I have been engaged upon this as a District Councillor with some success & want to carry this work on at County level. I have some knowledge of what the sea can do to a community with my Royal Naval experience and am keen to see coastal protection up-rated. As the NNDC member for the Police & Crime panel and as an ex-local Policeman I also want Norfolk to remain at the forefront of crime prevention and give my fellow Norfolk people a safe and enjoyable environment to raise tomorrow’s citizens. I pledge to work toward this.

OLIVER Rhodri Conservative In my short time as District Councillor and Deputy Leader of the Council, I hope I have made a positive impact through listening to, and acting on, people’s views. My rule has been to tell people what I believe I can achieve and then do it.

Sheringham and Beeston Regis are special places. For a long time they have needed particular things: the roundabout, residents’ parking, stopping rat runs, all of which I want to deal with – plans others support, but have not achieved. I hope you will consider voting for me – I am young, hard-working, committed to Sheringham with fresh ideas for this important role. Most importantly, I will deliver for Sheringham division: I will get residents’ parking brought in, I will fight for a roundabout at the top of Holway Road, I will tackle the problems of rat runs, road works and Britons Lane - and I promise to secure another freeze in your council tax. The choice is clear: either four more years of the same or a new approach which will get results for Sheringham Division.

SMITH Norman Conservative In my opinion Party Politics should not be an issue at local authority level and the choice of Councillor should be based on the candidate’s ability rather than Political Party. I won the District Council Election in

2011 with a considerable majority and am standing now for County Council to further help the people I represent. Being involved as a Parish Council Chairman and as a District Councillor enables me to keep in touch with people and to deal with their concerns. I also believe that my past experience with the Federation of Small Businesses, not only recruiting new members, but as Regional Chairman covering Norfolk & Suffolk will be invaluable at County Council. Through my Chairman’s role I became heavily involved in taking up member’s issues with County and District Councils. This experience has already proven useful when taking up & trying to sort out the issues which people raise but will be especially helpful at County level. My main interests are education, care for vulnerable people, highways and mental health. Please support me on May 2nd.

Over 10,000 people called on coalition MPs & health officials to re-think proposed cuts to the ambulance fleet in the town, and the campaign had the support of Only Fools and Horses actor Roger Lloyd-Pack and Stephen Fry.He also helped launch the Nth Walsham Bonus Card which is encouraging local residents to return to do their shopping on the town’s high street. SheringhamCORMACK Alistair Kilmuir - Green PartyI have lived in Norfolk for 24 years, – on the North Norfolk coast for 10; I want this jewel of our country-side to be cared for and developed in the most sensitive fashion. I support the creation of sustainable and self-reliant communities living in harmony with

a flourishing and diverse natural environment. Local decision making and economic management should provide the goods, services & infrastructure needed to enhance the wellbeing of rural communities. I support policies – in particular backing small-scale local food producers – that will create sustainable jobs and reduce the carbon footprint of, and reconnect everyone with, the food we eat. Furthermore, anything we do locally to support a nationwide Green transport philosophy is invaluable; Norfolk should be investing in safe & spacious cyclelanes, pavements & pedestrian areas and in better local rail and bus networks, which will reduce air pollution and congestion. Taxes on more polluting transport should be used to provide efficient and affordable public transport alternatives. My love of North Norfolk informs my dedication to the Green vision of the future.

Vodafone PetitionCampaigners who set up an online petition calling on Vodafone to address problems with mobile coverage in north Norfolk are set to meet Vodafone bosses after the number of residents signing the petition reached their target of 1,000 signatures. The petition, set up by Nth Norfolk Labour Party at the start of April, was in response to the on-going signal problems plaguing Vodafone customers in north Norfolk. Vodafone claimed to have fixed the problems, but a large number of residents around Cromer, Sheringham, North Walsham and Mundesley are still struggling to receive the service they had previously. The number of angry customers quickly hit 1,000 signatures and continues to grow. Every signature triggers an email that straight into the inbox of Vodafone’s Chief Executive. Now Vodafone bosses have written to the party inviting the campaigners to meet with bosses to discuss concerns, and to look at ways to improve the company’s communication over these issues.Jono Read, a spokesman from North Norfolk Labour Party, said: “For too long residents of north Norfolk have been fobbed off by Vodafone. They have been given a number of excuses as to why they can no longer get a signal in their own town or village, when they once had a decent service. We’re pleased that Vodafone have made the move to meet with us to discuss these issues, but it is concerning that they still believe all of the problems are now mixed, particularly as our petition continues to grow.”The petition calling for urgent action from Vodafone can be signed at :www.vodafonenfk.com.Photosmobilephone_media.jpg Download All

InterestingSuppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to £100...If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this...The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing. The fifth would pay £1.The sixth would pay £3.The seventh would pay £7..The eighth would pay £12.The ninth would pay £18.The tenth man (the richest) would pay £59.So, that’s what they decided to do. The ten men drank in the bar every day & seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them a curve ball.“Since you’re all such good customers, I’m going to reduce the cost of your daily beer by £20”. Drinks for the ten men would now cost just £80.The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes. So the first four men were unaffected. They would still drink for free. But what about the other six men? The paying customers? How could they divide the £20 wind-fall so that everyone would get his fair share? They realised that £20 divided by six is £3.33. But if they subtracted that from everybody’s share, the fifth man and the sixth man would each end up being paid to drink his beer. So, the bar owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man’s bill by a higher percentage the poorer he was, to follow the principle of the tax system they had been using & he proceeded to work out the amounts he suggested that each should now pay.

And so the fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% saving). The sixth now paid £2 instead of £3 (33% saving). The seventh now paid £5 instead of £7 (28% saving). The eighth now paid £9 instead of £12 (25% saving). The ninth now paid £14 instead of £18 (22% saving). The tenth now paid £49 instead of £59 (16% saving). Each of the six was better off than before and the first four continued to drink for free, but once outside the bar, the men began to compare their savings.“I only got a pound out of the £20 saving,” declared the sixth man.He pointed to the tenth man “but he got £10!”“Yeah, that’s right,” exclaimed the fifth man. “I only saved a pound too. It’s unfair that he got ten times more benefit than me!”“That’s true!” shouted the seventh man. “Why should he get £10 back, when I got only £2? The wealthy get all the breaks!”

“Wait a minute,” yelled the first four men in unison “we didn’t get anything at all this new tax system exploits the poor!”The nine men surrounded the tenth & beat him up. The next night the tenth man didn’t show up for drinks, so the nine sat down and had their beers without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important. They didn’t have enough money between all of them for even half of the bill! And that, boys and girls, journalists and government ministers, is how our tax system works. The people who already pay the highest taxes will naturally get the most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not show up anymore. In fact, they might start drinking overseas, where the atmosphere is somewhat friendlier.David R. Kamerschen, Ph.D.Professor of Economics.

I see you have those new robotic mowers in stock, what are they like for naturally lazy people like me?“These are brilliant machines to have ready to mow your lawn for you while you are out enjoying what is going to be a great summer this year or just lying in bed, on a lazySunday morning. As far as I know we are the only localagents selling this type of mower. We’ve only just got them in stock. The AL-KO is an electrically charged mower that will come away from it’s charger unit on the edge of your lawn and mow your lawn as often as you

ask it to, even if it is at midnight, one or three times a week,it comes out and mows your lawn very quietly so that you and the neighbours cannot even hear it do all the work for you.According to my wife Lis, who’s eldest son has such a mower, they are brilliant and wonderful to watch, as it pops out and mows his lawn in Switzerland. All his neighours have these machines as well, busy mowing their lawns.

As I write I am on day 2 and I must say that I have already felt the strains of living only on porridge, rice and lentils, which whilst cheap it is not very nutritious. I expect the rest of the week to grow harder by the day, especially as I am intending to combine it with some physical endurance tasks later on in the week!

I have written a blog to share these practical limitations, the physical side-effects and the emotional outcomes that I experience and I hope that through doing this, people will read of my experiences and think about poverty a little more and will perhaps sponsor me with a greater awareness of how vital the work of International Service is for hundreds of thousands of people who, unlike me, cannot opt in & out of a life below the line. I just wondered if you could be so kind as to share this with your readers, with the links to my blog and fundraising page. It would be a tremendous help in spreading awareness about my Live below The Line week and a good way to tell other local young people about this programme. If anyone reading this is able to sponsor me - it would be hugely appreciated so thank you so much! Any donations, no matter how large or how small they are will be a massive help in me reaching my target and will make the world of difference to thousands of marginalised and impoverished people that International Service tries to reach. From me, International Service and everyone who they work with, I cannot thank you enough. Dear Philip, My name is Carmen Little, I am 23 years oldand have lived in Norfolk for most of my life. I am just writing to you today to tell you about a volunteering project that I am going to be involved with in Ghana, that I think might be of interest to your readers, and that I am trying to raise funds for. Whilst I have lived in Cromer for many years,I have just spent 3 years studying at Sussex University for a degree in Anthropology & International Development studies, and now that I have finished it is my dream to get involved in the humanitarian sector as an aid worker. With this goal in sight I recently applied forsomething called International Citizen service, an initiative funded by the Department for International Development that encourages young people to get involved in voluntary action overseas. It is an incredible opportunity that gives young people aged 18-25 the chance to get some much needed work experience by seeing the world and making a difference, so if any of your readers think that it sounds interesting they should definitely apply. As luck would have it, I was successful and in September I will be going away with the human rights charity International Service to Ghana for 3 months. This Charity is a wonderful organisation who work with some of the most marginalised people in the world and while I am away with them I will be working on projects that support disadvantaged women and girls, and promote the rights of disabled people.I can’t wait to get out there and get stuck in practically, but before I go I have to raise £800 for them, which goes towards the projects I will be involved with as well as similar ones in different countries. To raise this money, I want to do something that relates to the work that International Service does, and to the situations I will encounter whilst I work with them. Ghana looks like a beautiful country, but there is extreme inequality and almost a third of the population live below the poverty line on less than $1.25 a day. So I am asking people to sponsor me to Live below The Line, on the UK equivalent of $1.25 a day, which works out at just £5.74 for all my food, drink and transport during the entire 7 days.

Living With PainLiving with severe pain can be a trigger for depression, a sense of loss of who you are and who you will become, and a belief that you cannot manage your pain or your life. It is true that pain often changes people. You may have lost some of the positive abilities that defined you and these losses are both powerful and sad. Coming to grips with them is a process that will takes time - give yourself that time.Do not let the pain overwhelm your image of who you are. Sometimes thoughts can be so negative that you may have trouble realising that pain does not define you. Whilst you are adjusting to any temporary or more likely, enduring losses and changes that are part of your chronic pain, remember you still have positive qualities.

It may appear strange to ask you to write down your positive qualities and also to ask family/friends/colleagues to write some down about you too, but you may often discount your own positive qualities whilst emphasising the negative. This writing exercise will give you a chance to realise that you do have good qualities and do not need to berate yourself for being unable to be the person you always thought you were meant to be. Pin or stick the positive qualities you & others have written around the house and look at them every day and believe them.Pain has arrived and taken away so much, yet even despite that, look at how wonderful you are.

By virtue of reading this article you are already doing things to help you live and cope through pain.

A Little Girl.........was watching her parents dress for a party. When she saw her dad donning his tuxedo, she warned, 'Daddy, you shouldn't wear that suit.''And why not, darling?''You know that it always gives you a headache the next morning.'

Good News From Cromer VEOAfter learning that the Red Arrows would not be flying over us on Carnival Day, this year it was great news for everyone who heard Hubba (AKA Dave Roberts) reporting on the local radio station that the clear skies over Cromer will not be empty this year. This year there will be three displays on the Carnival Day: The Mighty Blades Aerobatic Display Team, The Wildcat Aerobatics Team and The Princess of Wales Parachute Display Team - The Tigers will also be at this year’s Cromer Carnival. The Blades are amongst the most experienced display pilots in the UK and all of them are former RAF fast-jet pilots and Red Arrows. Their display is renowned world-wide and the crowd will watch a 15 minute jaw-dropping sequence of over 30 separate manoeuvres.Carnival visitors will also see the spectacular Wildcat Aerobatics in their iconic biplanes, who are East Anglia’s premier formation aerobatic display team and will deliver a crowd- thrilling formation spectacular that encapsulates both close-formation aerobatics and synchronized pairs flying. In short once again the Cromer Carnival is back on track to yet again be the carnival to be at this summer.See you there. Maritime Museum Needs You!

Do you enjoy meeting people? Do you have a spare hour

or more a week? Our volunteer stewards are a welcome

front to the Mundesley Maritime Museum, and we are looking for

more people to join them. The Museum is situated on Beach Road,

Mundesley, with spectacular views along the coast.

The role includes introducing the Museum and its collection, and assisting

with or referring enquiries about the Museum and the local area.

Stewards usually work on either the morning or afternoon shifts during the open season which runs from

May until the middle of September. They are invited to an annual training session, before the Museum is open to familiarise themselves with any changes made during the winter.

If you think this role would suit you, don’t be shy.
