Celebration Assembly
Each month, CR Judd will host a school wide assembly to celebrate the many things that make CR Judd a great place for the students and our families. Our sports teams are recognized as well as other notable events or clubs. In January we recognized the boys and girls junior volley ball teams , the curling team and the cross country ski team. Mrs. LeGrand also took a few minutes to invite the students to join the EcoSchools team. She also shared the news that each
students will receive a free re-usable water bottle courtesy of CN Railway and the school council. These bottles will help our environment as students can refill them at our re-filling located by the jr/int washrooms. Two students are also selected from each class for displaying that month’s character trait. These students are presented with a certificate and parents and their families are invited to attend to join in the celebration. Pictures are taken and these will be displayed on our “Character” bulletin board at the school. Congratulations to our students selected by their teachers for the month of December (Responsibility). Books and More Books at
the Book Fair It is that time of year when the children get excited about the Book Fair coming to C.R.Judd. Book sales will take place on Feb. 22nd from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Feb. 23rd from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in the library.

Please invite grandparents and friends. There are many great gift ideas for all ages. Parent volunteers are needed. You will work a three hour shift assisting students to find and purchase their books and tidying up the tables. You can e-mail Ms. Swalm (Library Clerk)

Smith at 705 671-5953 to leave your name as a volunteer.

Picking up or Dropping off
Children
If you are driving and parking your car to pick
up or drop off students, please be mindful of
the bus loading zone at the start and end of
each day. Kindly refrain from blocking any
driveways as well. Please feel free to park
further down along Lincoln Crescent, in the
school's lower parking lot or across the
street from the school and walking your child
across the street. The school bus loading
zone is a busy area and we all need to work
together to ensure the safety of all of our
students. Thank you for making the bus
loading area a super safe place for all of the
students. Mr. Mantha

Electrical Safety and Conservation
On January 31, 2017, the students from JK to grade 8 had an electrical safety and conservation presentation in the gym. The entertaining presenter taught the students safety around power lines and ways they can conserve energy at home.
His main message around safety that you could review with your children are:
1. Electricity wants to get to the ground. 2. Never fly kites near power lines. 3. Never climb trees near power lines. 4. Stay away from substations and
electrical equipment. 5. Stay away from downed power lines,
call for help. 6. Water and electricity don’t mix. Check
your GFCI outlets with parents. 7. Never overload outlets. 8. Never put things in electrical outlets. 9. Check cords for signs of wear. 10. Outside extension cords, 3 prong
plug=ground wire. 11. Unplug chargers,adapters. Don’t charge
items on your bed/pillow/soft surfaces.
Curling for everyone, from Sudbury to Syria 2017-01-21 by Randy Pascal
Like countless other sports in Canada, curling will thrive in the long-run, to the extent that it is able to be introduced to as wide a spectrum of young athletes as possible. That is, in part, the attraction of the annual “Rainbow Elementary Bonspiel” to organizer Jason Bissonnette, taking on the torch from others
who have continued to grow this January tradition for the past several years.
While I did not take the time to complete a formal survey, common sense would suggest to me that a large percentage of those in the field of more than 20 rinks were enjoying their first taste of the joy that is curling via the school that they attend.
That was definitely the case for 13 year old Rida Alzahran, representing C.R. Judd Public School in Capreol roughly a
year after making the move from Syria to Northern Ontario with his family.
“It’s different in Syria,” he explained. “We play soccer a lot, basketball a little bit, just with friends. We would play at fields, but not like the ones here with a fence. Our fields would have good grass and flat ground, so we would play there. But no curling, ever, ever.”
Not that a lack of knowledge or even general awareness of the sport was about to slow this young outgoing teenager one iota. “When I got to school, all of my class were going to curling, so I got to try it. It’s a little bit hard to learn the rules in curling, like when you try and tell your friends how and where to throw the rock.”
The reason this would be important, for Alzahran, was that he has ascended to the role of skip after just one game in this bonspiel, as his team progressed from a game 1 loss to a game 2 tie.
Still, the way he saw it, he was probably not the best person to ask about why he might make a good skip. “Maybe I’m good, I don’t know,” he said with a smile. “You would have to ask the coach.” In any event, he was thrilled with the progress than his team was enjoying, even in the early stages of the event.
Alzahran. “Now, if there is a rock for the other team in the middle, I move it from the middle.” The new Canadian and his team may not have advanced to the finals, but judging from the smiles, that was the least of their concern.
Handwashing
Properly washing your hands should be
an important part of your daily routine.
Washing your hands is your best defence
against spreading illness such as the
flu, colds, food-borne diseases,
and norovirus (general information from
Health Canada and information for health
professionals from the Ministry of Health
and Long-Term Care).
How to wash your hands
Follow these steps for healthy
handwashing habits throughout your day.
1. Use regular—not antibacterial—soap and
running water.
2. Lather the front and back of your hands.
3. Rub between your fingers and under your
nails.
4. Wash for at least 15 seconds.
5. Rinse with warm water.
6. Dry your hands with a paper towel.
7. Use a paper towel to turn off the faucet.
When should I wash my hands?
When to wash your hands is also key
to preventing the spread of illness. Here’s
when you should be washing your hands:
when you arrive at work or home
when arriving at, or leaving, a daycare
when arriving at, or leaving, a health care
facility
when your hands are visibly dirty
after handling garbage
after handling dirty diapers
after sneezing or coughing
after wiping your nose
after using the toilet
after handling animals or animal waste
before preparing, serving, or eating food
before giving or taking medication
