COLLEGE OF PASTORAL SUPERVISION & PSYCHOTHERAPY [BAHAMAS/CARIBBEAN] Clinical Pastoral Education [CPE] was introduced to The Bahamas in 2006 by Rev. Fr. Sebastian Campbell, a Certified Chaplain with the College of Pastoral Supervision and Psychotherapy [CPSP] headquarted in New York, USA. For the time being The Bahamas is the only country in the Caribbean region to have successfully begun this type of ministry and todate persons from Jamaica and Haiti have been trained along with a number of Bahamians. Our course of study includes the following: Understanding Clinical Pastoral Education [CPE] 1:- Clinical: CPE takes place in the context of real-life pastoral situations. (Todate the hospitals have been the main context, but to a lesser extent and appropriately so training takes place in nursing homes, prisons, schools and in other specialized areas especially in parish life]. 2:- Pastoral: CPE enhances the trainees professional and personal skills in the care of the whole person [it enhances pastoral skills]. 3:-Education: CPE helps the trainee in his life long journey of learning, reflection and growth. [The trainee establishes a contract for learning which becomes the goal for achievement]. Who Can Benefit from CPE 1:-Matured Lay Persons seriously seeking a ministry in Pastoral Care, Ordinands preparing for Seminary Training, Theological Students, Priests and, Pastors seeking to enhance pastoral skills, untrained chaplains of institutions. 2:-Institutions and Congregations through the enhanced contributions of the above. How Can You Benefit from CPE 1:-Grow in spirituality, self awareness and pastoral identity. 2:-Learn to work, reflect and share insights with peers in a supportive learning environment [a peer group should be eight maximum and five minimum]. 3:-Deepen theological understanding about Pastoral Ministry. 4:-Cultivate a disciplined approach to practical Pastoral Ministry. 5:-Gain confidence in practical ministry skills, especially to the sick and needy. How Does Learning Take Place In CPE 1:-Clinical Practice: Opportunities to carry out Pastoral Care under supervision at the Princess Margaret Hospital, Sandilands Rehabilitation Centre, the prison, nursing homes and eventually other specialized areas. 2:- Didactic Seminars: Topics include the following: Interdisciplinary briefings by medical practitioners, pastoral theology, e.g. pastoral identity, pastoral ethics, spiritual diagnostics, caring for people who do not share our faith, death

and dying, grief and loss, role of prayer, etc. 3:- Theological Issues to be explored, e.g.: Faith healing, sin, why good people suffer, evangelism versus pastoral care, meddling as opposed to being pastoral, sacramental rites in pastoral care. 4:- Clinical Verbatim Seminars: Real life case presentations and discussion of lessons learnt. 5:- Field Trips: Expose to new situations and experiences [when opportunities arise]. 6:- Individual Supervision: One to one consultation for mentoring and guidance. 7:- Interpersonal Relationship Seminars: [a] Know and share family tree; [b] Share picture of God in your life; [c] Share picture of your reflection of life now; [d] Personal sharing. How Much Time Must One Commit to the Training Programme A Total of 400 Hours which is broken down as follows: 1:- 60% to Clinical Practice 2:- 40% to Education Curriculum 3:- Once Classes have started an agreement will be worked out as to composition of these hours. Different combinations are possible e.g. twice per week for six months or two months compact. What Will You Receive Upon Completion Upon successful completion of all requirements the trainee will be awarded a Certificate for Level One CPE issued inconjuction with the Public Hospital Authority of The Bahamas and the College of Pastoral Supervision and Psychotherapy (CPSP) USA. How to apply? Complete and submit an application form to, the Supervisor and Trainer, Rev. Fr. Sebastian Campbell. [It should be noted that in order to maintain the quality of Supervision the number of openings is limited. Those who do not make the short list will transfer to the next incoming list]. ACCREDITATION is through CPSP and it means that credits offered will be accepted outside The Bahamas especially by churches that mandate at least one unit of CPE as a Pre-requisite for Ordination. It is well to note that CPE is the standard requirement for Chaplaincy in North America, Europe and Asia. NOTE: - This is not American CPE, but an indigenous programme for The Bahamas and Caribbean.
