A MESSAGE FROM THE CO-DIRECTORS Todd Lee, PharmD, PhD and Edith Nutescu PharmD, MS CTS, FCCP

The UIC Center for Pharmacoepidemiology and Pharmacoeconomic Research (CPR) is an interdisciplinary research unit of the UIC College of Pharmacy. One of the only centers of its kind, the mission of the CPR is to advance understanding of the impact of pharmacy and health care services, products, and policy by 1) conducting research in pharmacoeconomics, pharmacoepidemiology, and patient-centered outcomes; 2) translating and disseminating research; and 3) educating, training, and mentoring researchers. The faculty of the CPR are among the top researchers in the field of health services and pharmaceutical outcomes research - both nationally and internationally. (For more information see Section B.) Faculty have been recognized by serving in leadership positions in several national associations and committees and by several national and international awards. (For more information see Section E.) A primary goal of the CPR is to conduct ground-breaking research in pharmacoeconomics, pharmacoepidemiology, and patient-centered outcomes research in order to advance understanding of the impact of pharmacy and health care services, products, and policy. Research conducted by the Center is funded by a variety of sources, including pharmaceutical manufacturers, private research foundations, and by government agencies, including the National Institutes of Health, and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. (For more information see Section C.) While conducting research and generating new knowledge are important, for such information to inform public policy and impact society it must be disseminated and used. Thus, the CPR actively seeks to translate and disseminates its research findings in scholarly publications and presentations at scientific meetings in order to inform health care policy and practice. (For more information see Section D.) By virtue of its position as a leading research center, the CPR seeks to educate, train, and mentor current and future scientists to expand the fields of pharmacoeconomics, pharmacoepidemiology, and patient-centered outcomes research by providing post-doctoral fellowships and other research training experiences. (For more information see Section F.) Calendar year 2014 was filled with many accomplishments for the CPR. We welcomed 3 new faculty members to the Center, Drs. Lisa Sharp, Greg Calip and Katie Suda, which increased our core faculty membership to 14. Center faculty had a very productive year, as funding levels increased while maintaining a high level of visibility through publications in peer-reviewed journals as well as presentations at national and international scientific meetings and academic societies. Total research funding increased substantially, with 15 new grants awarded and 42 grants that had continuation funding. Funding sources included the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, the National Cancer Institute, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the Food and Drug Administration, the American Cancer Society, the McKesson Foundation, and the Pew Charitable Trust, among others. CPR faculty published a total of 57 papers (6.3/FTE), presented 53 research papers at scientific meetings (5.9/FTE) and gave 23 invited seminars and presentations (2.6/FTE). The average H-index in 2014 for CPR faculty was 15.43 (range 3-28). The faculty collaborated with 20 and 21 internal (UIC) scientists and departments, and 121 and 77 external scientists and institutions, respectively. The Center also sponsored 17 seminars and the faculty mentored 12 graduate trainees (5 fellows, 2 K-awardees, and 5 graduate students who graduated in 2014).
