KRAKÓWLESSER POLAND VOIVODESHIP

Kraków is the capital of the Małopolska (Lesser Poland) Voivodeship and the second largest city of Poland, both in terms of population and the area. It is situated in the south part of the country, on the River Vistula, as well relatively close to the Tatra Mountains. This is one of the oldest Polish cities, former capital of the country, an important cultural site, and also an economic and business centre. Kraków was the first city in Poland to become the European Capital of Culture and is one of the most popular cities in Poland to be visited by tourists. The capital of Małopolska is also a very important academic centre, where such prestigious universities as the Jagiellonian University or the AGH University of Science and Technology are based there. It may be most definitely claimed that Kraków is a city of contrasts – the rich heritage as well as the cultural and tourist potential merge here with the modern business location and thriving economy.

The Małopolska Voivodeship, despite being one of the smallest provinces in Poland, has a relatively high population density – 223 persons /km², whereas the national average is 122 persons/km². Małopolska has a very regular structure in terms of distribution of inhabitants between urban and rural areas. 51% of the population resides outside urban areas and 49% - in towns and cities. Which is important, as many as 22% population of the voivodeship resides in its capital. The whole region of Małopolska generates around 7.5% of the overall national GDP. The region has also 4 industrial areas: Kraków, Jaworzyna-Chrzanów, Tarnów, and Carpathians. Besides Kraków, the most important cities of the voivodeship are Tarnów and Nowy Sącz, as well as the tourist destinations of Zakopane and Wieliczka.

INFRASTRUCTURE

ROAD TRANSPORTThe A4 motorway, running from east to west, bypasses the city to the south of it. It connects Kraków with the German border and the Ukrainian border, as well as the largest Polish cities: Wrocław, Gliwice and Katowice or Rzeszów. Beside the motorway, the most important roads crossing the Kraków transport hub are national roads No 7, 44, 75, 77 and 94. Together, they form a transport route of not just national but European relevance. Moreover, Kraków is to be eventually encircles with 4 bypasses, two of which are already completed.
