    By Jan uar y 1962 t h e Communist P a r t y of India (CPI) hadr e a c h e d a p o i n t a t which a n open s c hi s m i n t h e p a r t y i n t h ecoming year had become a ser ious p o s s i b i l i t y .     The 20t h Congress of t h e CPSU i n February 1956 and th eev en ts which f lowed from i t admini s t e red a series of funda-mental shocks t o t he C PI w i t h r e s u l t s which were t o a f f e c tg r e a t l y t h e r e l a t i o n s h i p of t h e India n pa rt y t o Moscow andt o P e i p i n g down t o t h e p r e s e n t d ay . The f i r s t a nd most im-p o r t a n t of t h e s e s h oc k s w a s t h a t of d e s t a l i n i z a t i o n , w h i c hon t h e o ne hand g r e a t l y i n t e n s i f i e d t h e s p i r i t of cynic i sm,t h e i n t e r n a l d i s o r g a n i z a t i o n , a nd t h e p e r s o n a l i n d i s c i p l i n ea l ready widespread because of t h e p a r t y ' s p r ev io u s h i s t o r y ,and on t h e o t h e r h and g r e a t l y a c c e l e r a t e d t h e l o ng -t er m de-c l i n e i n t h e a u t h o r i t y and p r e s t i g e of t h e CPSU which had be-gun w i t h t he d ea t h of S t a l i n , w h i le s i m u l t a ne o u s l y e n h an c i ngt h e a p p e a l of t h e CCP t o t h o s e s e c t i o n s of t h e I n d i a n p a r t ysym pa t he t i c t o P e i p i n g ' s v i e w p o i n t .fo l lowed by t h e S o v i e t - s u p p r e s s i o n o f t h e H u ng ar ia n R e v o l u t i onand t h e subse quen t e xe cu ti on of Nagy, which weakened th e CPSU'sp o s i t i o n among r i g h t i s t s e c t i o n s of the p a r t y . A t h i r d d i f -f i c u l t y was meanwhile occasioned by t h e 2 0 t h C on gr es s l i n e onp e a c e f u l t r a n s i t i o n t o socialism, and p a r t i c u l a r l y by t h eextreme i n t e r p r e t a t i o n of t h a t l i n e as a p p l i ed t o I n d i a p ro -v ided by an a u t h o r i t a t i v e S o v i e t a r t i c l e i n t h e summer of1956 which impl i ed t h a t Nehru, and no t t he CPI, w o u l d l e a dI n d i a i n t o t h e s o c i a l i s t s ys te m.
