LEVEL 5 CERTIFICATE IN PRIMARY SCHOOL PHYSICAL EDUCATION SPECIALISM: This is a na�onally recognised
qualifica�on that aims to upskill primary school teachers and higher level teaching assistants to improve the
overall delivery of the physical educa�on curriculum within primary schools. On successful comple�on of this
qualifica�on, delegates will be able to assist in raising the standards within primary school physical educa�on
teaching.
LEVEL 6 AWARD IN PRIMARY SCHOOL PHYSICAL EDUCATION SUBJECT LEADERSHIP: This is a recognised
qualifica�on to improve the overall delivery of the physical educa�on curriculum within primary schools. The
aim of this qualifica�on is to upskill primary school teachers to enable them to lead on the delivery of the
primary school physical educa�on curriculum. On successful comple�on of this qualifica�on, delegates will be
able to take subject leadership within primary school physical educa�on teaching and deliver high quality
primary school physical educa�on. Level 5 must be completed prior to star�ng Level 6.

PROFESSIONAL LEARNING PATHWAY
The aim of the Gateshead School Sport Partnership (GSSP) is for all school age (4-19) children and young people in Gateshead (and
external partner schools) to experience and enjoy High Quality Physical Educa�on, Physical Ac�vity and School Sport (PEPASS),
building the founda�ons for an ac�ve and healthy lifestyle.
This professional learning programme provides a framework for the consistent delivery of high quality PE, physical ac�vity and
school sport. It will support improvements in the delivery of teaching and learning that will promote par�cipa�on, progress and
performance.
Course evalua�ons for the GSSP Professional Learning modules delivered in 2015-16 show 100% sa�sfac�on and immediate impact
on prac�ce.

The following courses will develop practitioner’s confidence and skills to teach high quality
physical education (incorporating physical literacy), and equip primary age children for lifelong
participation in physical activity and a healthy lifestyle.

Recommended audience
This course is suitable for teachers and adults who support
learning of/in KS2 curriculum PE and extra curricular ac/vi/es.

MATALAN SPORTING PROMISE - TOP SPORT
Recommended audience
This course is suitable for KS2 teachers and adults other
than teachers who want to develop a curriculum and
mul/-skills approach to PE at KS2.
Course descrip�ons
Spor/ng Promise is an award-winning grass roots sports
ini/a/ve. Through a partnership between Matalan and
the Youth Sport Trust, it aims to ensure that children
across the country have vital access to sports ac/vity in
school. This one day prac/cal course also provides
delegates with resource cards, posters and access to
online resources.
Course outcomes
• Primary teachers are experts at giving children the
tools and passion to learn. The Spor/ng Promise
programme builds on this to support par/cipants to
become more confident and competent in teaching
PE.
• The programme helps prac//oners unlock the
poten/al of children (aged 7-11 years) in KS2 PE by:
∗ Developing their physical and social skills
∗ Improving wider learning skills, such as
confidence and managing individual
emo/ons.
∗ Increasing their understanding of their own
health and wellbeing.

1.6 CLASSROOM PRACTITIONER 3 (QUALIFICATION COURSE)
TEACHING AND DEVELOPING PHYSICAL LITERACY (BASIC MOVES LEVEL 1 & 2 QUALIFICATION)
Recommended audience
This course will help R/KS1 prac//oners build their confidence
and competence in developing children’s fundamental
movement skills through school PE, in extra-curricular clubs and
in community ac/vi/es, including play.
Course descrip�ons
The Basic Moves Programme helps all children develop their
physical literacy skills and abili/es - travelling, object control
and balance movements that are so important for an ac/ve life.
Without these important movement skills, many ac/vi/es are
just not available to children, adolescents and adults.
Developing children’s basic movements must not be leH to
chance. Furthermore, as childhood is the best /me to learn
these movements, the Basic Moves Programme has been
developed for children in the pre-school and infant school years
and is delivered in school PE, in extra-curricular clubs and in
community ac/vi/es, including play. Basic Moves classes are
not only enjoyable, they are worthwhile, developmentally
appropriate and for all children.
The Basic Moves Level 2 training course is a two - day intensive
programme that introduces the background to Basic Moves and
the Basic Moves Framework.
Course outcomes
• Level 2 Basic Moves (physical literacy) Qualifica/on course
• Introduc/on to Basic Moves and the Basic Moves
framework
• Understand the role of basic moves with a broader
developmental and integrated physical ac/vity/educa/on
framework.
• Explore how the structure of Basic Moves lessons support
the KS1 Physical Educa/on Na/onal Curriculum (2014).
• Develop knowledge and understanding of how children
develop basic movement competence and how this is best
achieved in different seJngs.

Recommended audience
This course is suitable for teachers, teaching assistants,

university students, sports club members, school sports
coaches, young leaders etc.
Course descrip�ons
Change 4 Life: A programme inspired by the
Olympics/Paralympics with the aim to increase physical ac/vity
levels in less ac/ve young people through mul/-sport themes.
Giving young people the confidence and competence to take
part in lifelong physical ac/vity.
Course outcomes
• Develop knowledge and exper/se to effec/vely deliver
Change4Life Sports Clubs to target the least ac/ve and
used to raise achievement and impact on whole school
priori/es.
• Ideas to help staff to create and inspira/onal environment

This is a one day prac/cal course that uses the context of PE and
sport alongside prac/cal learning approaches to support the
teaching of English across the school. Based on research and trials
in primary schools across the country, this course uses exis/ng
resources alongside the new Na/onal Curriculum Programmes of
Study. It has been wriKen by teachers for teachers, so it really
gets to the heart of the challenges and offers evidence based
solu/ons.
The morning focuses on KS1 and the aHernoon on KS2, but all
delegates should aKend for the whole day.
Delegates will receive prac/cal teaching strategies alongside
resource cards linked to reading, wri/ng, speaking and
listening for KS1 and a specifically commissioned book for KS2.
