TRAINER INSTRUCTIONS
This package has been compiled to assist Trainers in the on site, timely and accurate correction of students written or verbal assessments. All pages of the “Assessment Package” are to be returned to TAM Administration for the recording of the students attainment.
Forms of Assessment
The trainer is required to obtain at least 3 types of evidence but preferably more. These may include but are not limited to the following:-
1. Written or Verbal Assessment (the later for those with writing or literary difficulties)
2. Observation by the Trainer of ‘on-site work’ called Practical Assessment for work carried out on the student’s job site.
3. A Third Party Report completed by the employer after he is satisfied that the student/trainee has demonstrated the required knowledge and skills consistently whilst on the job.
4. A Photographic Record of work completed on site corroborated/signed by the employer where possible with the trainee carrying out the actual work. These photos should contain name, date, and the units that are supported by the photographic evidence. (Only to be used as supportive evidence)
5. Other forms of evidence including recognition of prior learning and skills, corroborated by a former employer accompanied by photographic evidence or a CT being a credit transfer from a previous RTO where a trainee has already completed some or all of that unit of competency.
Completing the Assessment Cover Sheet
• Trainer is to tick the Yes box against each Form of Evidence if the student has completed this part successfully.
• Trainer is to place a cross (X) against any element attempted that is not successful. • Do not place anything against evidence if the student has not attempted it. • Ensure that you can provide evidence of all assessments attempted. A minimum
of 3 items of assessment, at a satisfactory standard, are required for students to achieve competency. Normally it is possible to provide more.
Student Feedback
Trainer is to ensure that at the completion of the training course (Qualification) an AQTF feedback form is completed, and forwarded to Administration for processing.
Administration Processing
Administration personnel must ensure all relevant forms of assessment are attached prior to processing the outcomes of the training and assessment. If there is any information not finalised the complete package for that student must be returned to the relevant trainer to rectify.

8.) When colour matching, how can you tell how much the colour will possibly change?
A sample of the matched colour should be allowed to dry completely
9.) Why should a sample batch of paint be mixed when colour matching?
So you will not destroy a whole drum if over or incorrect tinting occurs
Colour and Light
1. The source of all colour is LIGHT
2. The term used to describe the colours contained in light is the SPECTRUM
3. A surface, which appears to be, blue in colour ABSORBS all light of other
wavelengths and REFLECTS only the Blue light waves.
4. How many colours are there in the spectrum? (7) SEVEN
5. List, in order, the colours of the spectrum. RED, ORANGE, YELLOW, GREEN, BLUE, INDIGO, VIOLET
6. Which two colours in the spectrum are combined to form the colour Green in the ‘Painter’s Spectrum’?
BLUE & YELLOW RED + YELLOW = ORANGE
BLUE + YELLOW = GREEN BLUE + RED = PURPLE
7.) Describe in your own words, what is meant by the following terms:
Shade : A Hue with black added Tint : A Hue with white added to make a very light colour Tone : A hue with grey added. These colours have more black than white added to produce the greyed colour
8.) Using the plans at the beginning of this section to calculate the ceiling and wall
areas of the following rooms: Ceiling height was 2.4m Kitchen/Dining Wall 3.68 + 3.7 x 2 x 2.4 = 35.424 Ceiling 3.680 x 3.7 = 13.616 Bedroom 1 Wall 4.17 + 3.6 x 2 x 2.4 = 37.296 Ceiling 4.17 x3.6 = 15.012 Bedroom 2 Wall 3.16 + 3.7 x 2 x 2.4 = 32.928 Ceiling 3.16 x 3.7 = 11.692 Bathroom Wall 1.71 + 3.6 x 2 x 2.4 = 25.488 Ceiling 1.71 x 3.6 = 6.156 Laundry Wall 2.04 + 2.67 x 2 x 2.4 = 22.608 Ceiling 2.04 x 2.67 = 5.44

10. Regulatory signs such as those meaning ‘smoking prohibited’ are painted in which
combination of colours?
(circle your answer)
Signal red, black and white C Black and white
Sunflower and black Signal red and black
Jade and white Jade and black
11. Why are the stainers (colourants / Tinters) used by Painters and Decorators called
‘universal’ stainers?
The can be used in either acrylic or enamel paints
12. What generally happens to paint and paint colours over time?
Paints will generally fade to a lighter colour and begin breaking down causing a
chaulk like substance on the surface of the coating. When this happens the coating
will loose its protective coating and will be very hard to colour match
13. What considerations should be taken into account for colours chosen for interiors
and exteriors?
The actual colour and tints to be used can it be used in this type of environment
what undercoat is needed will it cover, have the right or enough opacity or sheen
level, what furnishings are to match and the lighting conditions
14. What should be done to a paint sample before being colour matched?
It should be taken from a good, clean surface and be carefully cleaned to make
sure it is as close to original as possible

15. List two (2) reasons why some colours cannot be matched by adding stainers to the
paint.
The base colour (Trying to get black from a white base) and the type of tinters, the
Colour to be matched may have lifters / highlighter / brighteners in it, the range of
Tinters available. The type of paint. The sheen level
16. Why should stainers be added in small quantities?
You start with small measured portions / drops then when you have the desired
colour, you can then add the correct amount of tinter
17. What can occur if too much stainer / tinter is added to the paint?
If too much stainer is added it can over saturate the paint (much like when you add
too much sugar to hot water) sooner or later it will not be able dissolve any more
tinters and the tinters will float to the top of the drum causing floatation this can also
affect drying times and the lower the performance of the coating
18. Do most paints dry lighter or darker than the wet sample?
In 99% of cases it dries Darker
19. Why should a sample batch of paint be mixed when colour matching?
So as not to ruin a whole drum of paint, if you add in too much tinter you cannot
take it back out. You start with a measured portion then when you have the desired
colour, can add the correct amount of tinter
20. Explain the term ‘flotation’?
Floatation is where the paint has received more tinter than what can be actually be
dissolved into the paint solution, the left over tinters will not mixi in and floating to
the top of the drum
21. List four (4) factors that should be considered when selecting colours for interior
plans.
1. The effect of light on colour over time, age deterioration and colour durability of exterior environments
2. Paint ingredients, gloss levels and opacity 3. Lighting conditions, existing substrate colour and colour of furnishings & drapery 4. Client preferences

CHROMA (the purity/strength of the colour) VALUE (the lightness or darkness)
23. What number is used to identify a main hue in the Munsell colour system?
5 eg: 5YR
24. What is the minimum length of space between markers or bands on an interrupted
pipeline service? (Circle your answer).
8 metresC
10 metres
15 metres
20 metres
25. Provide an example of the following colour schemes:
Spilt Complimentary - Split compliments sit on each side of the colour positioned opposite on the colour wheel.
Monochromatic - (Dominant Harmony) When a hue is mentioned, visualise not just the hue but its variations of tones, tints, shades and greyed effects MONOCHROMATIC (Dominant Harmony). 'MONO' means one 'CHROMA' means colour. This colour harmony consists of tomes, and shades of the one colour.
Complimentary - Complimentary colours are colours that sit opposite each other on the colour wheel.
Triadic - The colour circle is divided into three (3) equal divisions.
Analogous - (Related harmony) Analogous means similar colours within a short interval of each other on the colour wheel.

26. Explain why it is important not to leave containers of universal strainers / tinters
unattended or not stored appropriately:
Tinters are prone to transferring once on surfaces and materials like clothes,
drop-sheets and carpets, even sandstone and tile etc. they can be possibly
kicked over or stepped on or get mixed up. Even when dry the tinters will still
transfer and possible stain anything it comes into contact with
27. Explain why it is necessary to clean, maintain and correctly store equipment also
explain how to use a waste reticulation system.
So you now where it is and that it’s ready for the next day’s work. You can also
see if items or parts need replacing.
WRC – Waste water is stored in a hold tub / tank, chemicals(flocculants) are
added to separate solids from the water, the solids sink to the bottom and the
left over water can be either reused or spread over the lawn or garden (a permit
must be obtained to release the water to the sewer)
The solid can be drier and disposed of general rubbish
Note all wet solutions are classed as toxic or hazardous waste and cannot be
put in the bin or down the drain
